Dave Clark The Pattern Guy
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ก.พ. 2019
Hello, my name is Dave Clark aka The Pattern Guy. Recently, there has been a reemergence of interest in foundry work in the TH-cam community, and my goal is to pass along my 37 years of knowledge of pattern making/foundry work, as well as touching on aspects of woodworking, machining, and overall craftsmanship. Hope you enjoy!
Biggest Aluminum Can Melt in Youtube History!
Dave melts 1,080lbs of aluminum cans into ingots and answers the question: Is it worth melting down your cans at home?

you talk to much!!! get on with welding it!!!!!!!!!![]
Thanks Dave
Dave take care. I’m definitely going to watch your videos again.
Dave: in this video, th-cam.com/video/kPJN7e0Gfbg/w-d-xo.html at 1.30 to 1.51you will see the reason for the four bosses on the inside. They are on either side of the hand crank that lifts the anchor. Note the man leaning his whole weight on the crank handle to tighten the anchor to the side of the ship.
Wow! Amazing. Thanks for sharing Dave!
I enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Wish me luck everyone I need to make a few of them for a 3 ounce of 5 ounce and 7 ounce for silver
Thanks for showing this process of making the pattern!
Beautiful work and Craftsmanship!
This the very simple stuff. In '52 in big Mpls' shop, we made the master patterns for the new Ford OHV Y-bock engine for 1954. We did not make the head patterns. This is the tough complicated stuff. We did mostly work for the Navy.
Great video Dave. Quite interesting techniques rammin the molds compare to Clarke Easterling at WHF. Thanks for sharing.
you talking about shrink rule got me thinking George Crestanza on Seinfeld could have that in the famous shrinkage episode!!!
i stumbled upon Keith Rucker from Adam Booth. Keith was working on the Capstan. That lead me to Windy Hill Foundry. That lead me to you making the pattern. Where will this lead to next. Enjoying the ride!
Me thinks that this would have been clearer if he had done a later voice over instead of trying to narrate while also figuring out the layout.
Is it finished yet??
It is in Keith Ruckers shop. Vintage Machinery. Watch his videos. I think he’s almost done with it.
😓 P r o m o s m
This is interesting stuff. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You for sharing your life with us.
Like you, I’m a multigenerational patern maker. At 64 years old my phone rings off the hook with work. You young people should look at a trade job. I have never been out of work and have to turn it down.
I have done quite a bit of home aluminum casting and my crucible is probably bigger than yours but it is usually not near that red. I bet you could pour cooler and would probably help with shrinkage. Especially with such a thick casting.
Glad it’s fun :)
holy crap! very impressive. i enjoy the process of melting scrap and making stuff with it, so it seems worth it to me. but yes, it is tedious to do cans with a small propane furnace and crucible. its never stopped me though.
Oh, Canada☹️. We need nothing like this 💩.
In Canada we pay a $0.05 deposit on pop cans - so your 36000 cans would be worth C$1800.00
No where close. Pakistanis melt more and make pressure cookers with them! But a nice job anyway.
The big question is why! Lol
I didn’t want to scrap them, but I wanted to condense the pile.
🤐👍
Thank You for sharing your wonderful life with us. Great informative video. I like your way of thinking. I immediately recognized those yellow buckets. I’m thinking you have a cat or two. You could sell us an aluminum trinket you molded to help support your channel…
Two dogs, two cats
That's a lot of sugar and caffeine 😂
I work in a small brass foundry, im starting to get into the pattern side of things. Of course im using 3d printing and cnc to complete tasks but im absolutely amazed with your old school good quality of work. Wish you the best
Thanks much.
Would coal be an option for fuel?
I have use coal, and coke for fuel before. Both work great.
Your kid has a piss poor additude and needs to learn how to show respect to his father.
This is the best can melting setup I've seen on TH-cam. I really like that you were using wood as fuel too. Pretty unique video. I'm assuming you will alloy that metal before you cast anything out of it.
Seen Pakistani video where dudes had a huge vat 3x that size in the ground where they were ladeling out filling production runs of small green sand molds. I've got a bunch of old 20 lb propane tanks. Figured I'd give it a go like this.
Great "Can do" show! 😁
Thanks for sharing 👍 You in competition with BigstackD?
No. Wife had enough of the mess in the basement.
@DaveClarkThePatternGuy a couple icb containers in the back yard holds plenty 😅
Unfortunately I live in a development.
Thanks. So, where should I send my cans for the next bigger melt?
That’s generous, however Mrs Clark would have my guts for garter’s.
The 14th part is the top mold. #TallyHo!
Dave glad to hear from you, best wishes for you and your wife, stay strong. This video was very interesting and well done.
Wow that's some pattern 👍👍
Wow that is complex. I don't know how you do it. Awesome!
I am not entirely clear on how a cast part came from this mold? Is the mold to make a hollow sand shell to be filled with metal or perhaps to make an investment model of wax or foam, surely metal was not poured in this mold directly. New to me ...
You are correct sir. These are just models I made to make core boxes. Then they make sand cores and molds to pour molten metal in. Check out some of my foundry videos. They might help.
Man, I love watching technical stuff like this. Very cool.
Wow, it's like a 3D jigsaw puzzle. It must have been immensely satisfying to complete that job. It's been a tough couple years for my family too, so glad to hear your wife is ok. Wishing her a speedy recovery!
Dave, isn't there one more piece that goes on top of everything you've shown? Wouldn't that be the 14th piece? Or am I confused?
The top would be the cope part of the mold. If you look at the picture at the beginning, it is the half with the bulbous shape.
It’s amazing how you could figured all of this out
Very cool. This really shows what goes into making complex castings. Thanks for sharing. Wishing your wife a full recovery.
It is amazing that you can make metal flow into all the corners of such an intricate pattern and do it repeatedly enough to have production runs of these things. Truly a craft and science to it that stumps me a little bit looking at it. Thanks for sharing.
Mind blowing 😊
Thanks for sharing 👍
The patern makers I worked with made parts for the Grumman Aircrafts. You are on another level. Thank you for doing Leo's Capstan cover, Clarke made a great mold and Keith has the finished parts to complete this amazing project. Thank you Dave.
Beautiful work! Ive seen many pump molds put together but that one is a doozy!
