EP 13 | How to Setup a Homelab | How to Install The Homarr Dashboard for your Homelab
Hey guys, Abe here; please see the links below to help you throughout this course! In this video, I will cover how to install the Homarr Dashboard; this dashboard allows you to centralize many of your servers/content and access a more centralized area, especially when you have multiple nodes or Proxmox clusters. Homarr is a dashboard that helps you manage your server by providing access to all your apps and services in one place. It's highly customizable and integrates with self-hosted applications.

EP 3 | How to Setup a Homelab | OPNsense Firewall
Tons of useful tidbits. Checking a file's hash isn't something I've heard in other how-to videos. Awesome content sir!
Yeah, 99% of the time there will be nothing wrong with the file but it is best practice. Also, would you want to be the dude in your company who loses the business millions of dollars because you downloaded a malicious version and didn't bother with one command? Probably not haha.
Thanks for the update! I needed to add the exit node and routing to get to a machine in my home lab that didn't support TailScale directly. Good stuff and one more sub for you!
You are welcome! Yeah, idk how I left that part out but I am glad I got it fixed before someone trusted me, went over seas and then realized they couldn't backup their trip pictures well away! Like I said, I am so sad to this day that I have no pictures of my honeymoon due to a water damaged phone!
Also make a video on Netbird too. I am happy tailsscale user but love the concept of open source Netbird too
NetBird looks super cool, I have never heard of it! Adding it to the list!
Tbh just use headscale it uses tailscale apps but keeps it completely open source and self hosted
Yeah, that makes sense. I mean at the end of the day, Tailscale uses Wire guard too which is open source.
@@learntohomelab ya I’m atm trying to deploy headscale also you can have as many users and devices on headscale tailscale caps you at 3 users if I remember
@@InsaiyanTech Just read into that one, that looks awesome! Another piece of software I have not heard of yet!
This is a reupload; a commenter mentioned I forgot to add the section about making your Tailscale VM an exit node. I have spliced that part in and updated the site with instructions on how to do this. So here you go, the complete proper way to set up Tailscale and remote access ALL your VMs on your local home network!
@@learntohomelab why you want to deploy a full VM just for tailsscale, which can be run in a already running container too
@@yousaf.saleem You can use a LXC container if you want. I ran into issues with LXC containers and the rules that control them to make Tailscale work properly. Also the downside of a container is you cannot do live migration or failover live to other nodes within Proxmox. The built in container for Tailscale on Trunas works amazing though!
@@learntohomelab I didn't try the live migrations but that is valid point.
@@yousaf.saleem Yeah, all things to consider and as part of the course where we will go over migrations I am trying to stick most services to a VM.
Cool thumbnail, not. Open your mouth wider next time
Well, looks like that thumbnail helped with our click through rate because you're here 😁
Are you in Greece in the Picture?
Correct! Specifically, The Acropolis in Athens! You cannot even imagine the height of this structure; building something so massive thousands of years ago is truly mind-blowing.
Also do not forget, we have a discord! Check it out on our website!
hopefully, you guys like this one, too! OPNsense has a lot of built-in features and plugins that go unnoticed, in my opinion! Next upload will be back on the grind of finishing up our basic homelab setup!
I built a PC for my son for Christmas. I want to block social media and pron, will this work for that?
@skarscalp8157 yes it will! There is a specific blocklist under there called adult content for pornography. I believe one for social media. You can also add domains One by one under the block lists. So you could use chatgpt for example, ask for the top 100 social media domains and then paste them all in there!
@@skarscalp8157 Fantastic question! I'm glad you asked it. I'm trying to find ways to harden things up for my son's place, because of the grand kids. Aside from video games, the kids seem to have to do more with computers for school now and there has already been a Porn incident with my grandson, to daughter in laws shock one evening. lol
Good luck with your channel!
Thanks, looks like you have some extensive videos on Unifi! How would you say in your experience the feature set is? I've honestly been hesitant to try any of their stuff because I feel I can get more elsewhere through my own hardware and open source software or companies like Microtik, Juniper, etc. @ITSolurionsNetwork
@ UniFi is very limited, and I mean it, it’s easy to configure but, very limited, but they are getting there slowly you know.
I get that. I watched a video earlier than said you pay 15% more for about 30% less compared to the competition. I found that statement to be intriguing. You're buying into an ecosystem for sure. What is your opinion on them being no subscription based but they have products starting to offer feature sets with subscriptions?
@@learntohomelab I think it depends on what you compare it to. The cheapest MikroTik offers significantly more network features than any UniFi device. However, UniFi can be configured even by someone with no networking knowledge. As for the ecosystem, I think they started without a subscription model to attract users. It seems obvious to me that they will eventually introduce a subscription model for everything that is not basic functionality.
with the firewall will i still be able to access wifi wireless? or i need another adapter
Great question, so this depends on your setup. If the device you installed OPNsense on has WIFI, you can use it. If not, you need another device. The old router you used before more than likely has a setting called AP mode or (access mode). You would go into your old router's settings, turn on access mode, and then plug it into your OPNsense machine. OPNsense will assign it an IP address, and then that device will broadcast your Wi-Fi!
Great content, as always! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
Sorry, we don't cover anything crypto related on this channel.
Hey, you have EP2 and EP3 swapped! Great content!
Hey Daren, what do you mean swapped? Realistically you can setup either first, we are working from the top down in this case so it would be firewall, switch, proxmox, then virtual machines! I hope you stick around, a new video is releasing tomorrow!
Hey guys, this is more so an overview because I felt I could not find a lot of videos digging into the software and what it can and cannot do. I know I went through it very quickly but it is very simple. *THE TWO REASONS you would really get this switch is for VLANs and 2.5gig switching for under 50 USD ultimately.*
That's really cool mini Server rack. Are the files available online for purchase or free to download?
I designed this myself, I was going to originally sell them but decided I don't have the time. When the channel gets to 1,000 subscribers I was going to release them!
@@learntohomelab sweet deal, I have no doubt that you'll get there very quickly.
Appreciate that Brian, I'm actually very surprised how quickly this channel is picking up speed. Maybe I just hit the right content or using the right key words but I'm very excited to see where it goes because I'm very passionate about this stuff!
1:21 it is extremely wasteful, CT is enough for pihole.
What do you mean by wasteful?
@@learntohomelab mainly ram and disk space, i do run adguard home instead of pihole ( but they should use very similar amount of resources) and its in a CT that have 512mb ram and 1.5gb disk and it runs exactly the same as on standalone vm with 4gb ram. ps, it uses 76mb ram right now, but more ram makes updates a bit faster.
I see what you're saying. Resources allocated, yeah it's way more than enough for sure. I just did defaults to keep it simple for beginners but it's a good point to mention. I could edit the site and mention the recommend requirements.
@@learntohomelab just out of curiosity i did spin up pihole in debian12 CT, it uses 65.96MiB ram and 858.47MiB disk space, so its very similar to adguard home. for these small services it just makes more sense to use CT instead of a whole VM. its faster, easier and more resource efficient. or if you dont want to deal with CTs inside the proxmox, there is always option to make ubuntu VM, install docker and use docker containers.
Yeah, I am planning to cover containers in the course, but again trying not to overcomplicate too many things this soon on. It's easy for people to learn similar technologies and then they are unsure when is used when, etc. sometimes as a teacher I've seen it cause more harm to a learner than good but I totally agree with your arguments from a practical standpoint
0:40 "most routers", finally someone did some research, all routers except provider's ones, that's basically mean, for the majority of people it's impossible to change.
I think it also heavily depends on what country you're from. I know I'm Germany they are super restrictive but any ISP router I've been given has always allowed the changing of DNS. Also, if your ISP doesn't allow you to bring your own things like OPNsense having Mac spoofing makes it a lot easier for people to use their own.
@@learntohomelab im running opnsense because my isp (o2 Czech republic) provides real shitty router that have nice screen that shows weather but otherwise is completely useless. additionally its vlan based, password protected pppoe connection that is very poorly documented on isp's site so it was kinda pain to set up on opnsense and realistically i dont see many people do anything else than default isp router because its just way to much work for average household. but it was awesome of you to mention that most routers should have this setting accessible, because most is not all and i already had more than few instances of people asking how to change dns server just to get later to their house, dig in a router settings for about 30min just to realize that its just not an option on this or that isp's router.
That makes sense and I appreciate your comments! I've traveled the world and pretty exposed to IT tech in many European countries but I've never been to the Czech Republic. I do however think your experience is very common in eastern Europe compared to westerner Europe or north america. luckily over here we are pretty open. Also in the last ten years, more community owned fiber networks have popped up. Meaning, 10-20 ISPs share a fiber network to split the cost and the customer can pick anyone ISP to connect to which has created lower prices and more freedoms.
Correction at 04:10 login to your Opnsense machine not, Proxmox! Anyways, pretty clear that we are in Opnsense. What other software would you guys like to see us install or review on the channel in a different series?
@@learntohomelab next you can add unbound and make pihole use it as a upstream dns.
Play gg is shit, lagi fk 😂
Interesting, I haven't seen that. Most players are around 20 or less. I think it definitely depends on where you are located, what other software could we take a look at?
Hey all, the reason you would want to setup a server is so you can play with your friends and family, regardless of where they are in the world!
what is the benefit of server if we still need to purchase the launcher for Minecraft to play the game on server?
Hey @imtiazali1628, 👋. It is so you can play with your friends, family, or other people on the Internet! If you do this same thing but with the Java edition, you can add mods to your game! That will allow you to get more creative and add new things into the game to play with. Does that answer your question? We are here to help!
