Topographic Typography - Tutorial
In this video I break down a technique that I discovered by accident while experimenting with the 3D inflate tool inside of Illustrator. Since topographic contour map backgrounds are so popular, a matching text effect like this could be useful, so I thought I'd share the results of this happy accident with all of you. This quick tutorial uses the brush tool to create the letterforms, the smooth feature to refine the paths, and an interesting use of the 3D and Materials effects in Illustrator to generate the topographic contours.
I can't wait to see someone put this effect to use in the real world!
If you have any suggestions for other design based tutorials I'd love to hear them in the comments down below. Also if there was anything I missed in this video that you need clarification on let me know and I'll try to help out.
If you found this tutorial useful I'd also appreciate it if you gave the video a thumbs up.

The audio track I used is Rubber ...

Creating Custom Vector Grunge - In Photoshop?!?!
มุมมอง 1.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a technique I've been using for years to extract grunge textures and elements from photographs and scans. In this tutorial I'll show you how to create and export the vector data from Photoshop for use in Illustrator. I personally prefer this method to using the live trace feature in Illustrator as I have far more control over the selection tools in Photoshop. This tutorial breaks down a...

36 Days of Type - 2022
มุมมอง 13K2 ปีที่แล้ว
For my entry into the 36 Days of Type this year I decided to experiment with a different workflow where I created and animated all of my characters in After Effects. Some basic shapes were started in Illustrator and some of the background texture work started in Photoshop but my focus this year was adding to my After Effects toolbox. I'm really proud of the result and excited to share the final...
Illustrator Basics - How to handle overlapping points
มุมมอง 25K3 ปีที่แล้ว
When using the live corner widgets in Adobe Illustrator you can end up having two points stacked directly on top of each other. This can lead to issues when working with the path in Illustrator or in other software suites. The traditional methods for dealing with overlapping points like the unite feature, or the simplify feature, either don't work or modify the appearance of the path too much. ...
Illustrator Basics - Live Corners
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this Adobe Illustrator basics video I demonstrate the Live Corner feature. Arguably one of my favourite features Live Corners allow me to create clean and structured geometric paths for my illustrations, and my type/logo designs. Without the corner widget feature I would have to spend far more time with the pen tool trying to create the same paths. In this basic tutorial I break down the dif...

Nice tutorial... makes me want to dust off Illustrator. Thank you!
Great to hear! Thanks for the comment... makes me want to dust of my camera and make a few videos :)
@davewatkinscreative great work Dave, I've subbed! Happy holidays!
New subscriber here. Please keep making videos.
Thanks for subscribing! I've got quite the list of videos I want to make... Just have to find a bit of time!
Thanks for sharing such great content! Your channel is a goldmine of knowledge.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m always glad to hear that people find my stuff helpful.
That looks amazing. And maximum kudos for the excellent tutorial! Thank you 🙏🏻
Really appreciate that. Glad to hear you liked the artwork and the tutorial :)
I'm a new laser owner. I was looking for instructions on how to make this kind of file. Now, I have Illustrator and Light Burn (laser software), and I will learn how to combine the files. Are your creations available for download? It would speed up my goal of producing this with my laser.
Glad I could help you experiment with your new laser. I've been thinking of getting one myself for the longest time. Maybe 2025 will be the year I take the plunge. The thought has crossed my mind that I should start an Etsy store to sell a few files but that's something I haven't started yet either I'm afraid. Thanks for the comment :)
Fantastic step by step demonstration of customizing maps in Illustrator. So helpful. Thank you!
Awesome, really appreciate you checking it out!
I'm 3 days into learning Ai and you covered several techniques here I haven't found in MANY other vids. Thank you.
That's great to hear! Glad I could help out a little bit as you begin to learn Illustrator.
This was winderful. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome. Thanks for checking out my video.
Thanks
No problem!
Thank you so much for this, really amazing guide!
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm still using CS6, but I'm still following along as you're a great teacher and I'm sure I can still use 80% of your tips. Thank you! 👍🏻
Appreciate the comment! I still have the physical copy of CS6 in my desk drawer. Can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Robot letters are a bit of a weird idea
Just like 2020, cool and meh
This is actually pretty cool 😎 but also meh at the same time
Hahaha Thanks…. I think?
Is that brush a vector or a png
The brushes that I make in this video are fully vector based pattern brushes. No pngs were used in this project. Hope that's what you were looking for :)
Liked and subbed.. one of the best explanation of this topic
Awesome, thank you! Appreciate the support.
Thank you very much! Can you do bigger images that scale across e.g. over multiple printed A4s in Illustrator?
Pretty sure this should work. I’m looking at the print dialog box now and under options there’s a drop down menu for scaling that lets you select “tile full pages” and you can also increase the scale of your project. This makes me think it would be possible to tile a large design across multiple standard sheets of paper.
@@davewatkinscreative thanks for your reply. i will have to investigate. if it doesn't, i can just crop it manually! btw this video sparked my interest in learning how to use the Illustrator! :)
amazing video and helpful .Thank you so much .
That’s awesome! Glad you found it helpful.
Liked and Subbed!
Awesome! Really appreciate the support.
This method didn't work for me. What worked for me is making sure the two points are overlapping precisely and then use unite tool from Pathfinder.
❤
When I click "expand as wireframes" it isn't changing my shape at all. It's almost like it won't even let me click the quick action. Is there a step im missing? my object is selected so im not sure why I can't click the quick action
Hey there. I ran into this same issue a few times and couldn't pinpoint why it was happening but I did come up with a workaround that fixed it. At about the 6:22 mark of this video I walk through the workaround steps. Hope that helps, and thank you for checking out this video!
Great presentation! Thanks a lot
Glad you think so. Thanks for checking out the tutorial!
I need to see all 4 designs
Thanks ❤
No problem at all. Hope it was useful!
Super Tutorial 👏👏
Glad you think so! Cheers!
The best explanation I have found on TH-cam so far (covering all the pattern slots) and it is from 3 years ago 👏
Wow, thank you! Really appreciate the compliment.

36 DAYS OF TYPE ROBOT LORE
DAVE WATKINS PRESENTS.. 36 DAYS Of Type Alphabots
How would you do this for more layers without the ability to use the inner and outter stroke, say for like a 10 or 12 layer mandala?
If I needed to create a similar cascading layer effect without using different width strokes I would use the offset path feature to create a larger or smaller version of a shape.
No matter what I do the center keeps disappearing. I make one ruler guide then when I go for the second the center is gone. I can make the square a guide and I can see the center but I can't snap to it. I'm using Illustrator 2020. Anyone have this issue before?
Aye man just wanted to thank you for this video
You’re very welcome! Thank you for this comment :)
Thank you so much. Loved the detailed explanation with shortcuts..
This is amazing! Thanks a lot. I really like drawing zentangles with hands. Before this video, I tried it a little differently and the filling areas did not fit together perfectly. And your method worked out great! It's a pity that you can't give 10 or 100 likes 😍
Pretty cool. I do something similar and it is fun to put these designs together. Make sure you reference your art as " Not AI'. I predict people will get sick of AI images and look for the art with the " Human Touch" which may increase its value. :O)
What a crazy time to be alive! Never thought I’d have to tag disclaimers on my work that I actually made it with my own skills. I supposed keeping behind the scenes footage and screen recordings of the creative process wouldn’t hurt to have on hand if those accusations ever arise.
Thanks for sharing this content ❤😊
My pleasure! More than happy to share the results of my exploration with everyone. Hopefully someone out there can put this technique to use.
@@davewatkinscreative I have learned a lot from your channel... Keep your creative up ❤️
Your voice sounds dramatic. I like your tutorials. But can you get to the point next time because some of the words are time consuming
Thanks for the feedback. I struggle trying to find the balance between detail and speed when making these videos. At least my voice is entertaining though.
Thank you very much! I really like to draw using the Zentangle technique. I was wondering how to do this in vector 🌿
Glad you found this tutorial helpful! I've seen some amazing art created in the Zentangle style - I'm always impressed with how complex it can be.
Wow, I did not know what to expect when watching this video as I am new to this but what a great video, ty for sharing. You were very helpful.
You are so welcome! Glad to hear that you found the video useful. Best of luck on your Illustrator journey.
Another great video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the support!!
