SCAFELL PIKE via PEN an Epic Scramble from Eskdale (The Lake District)
GPX Download Of Route...
drive.google.com/file/d/16edKWpCY11ffFvaniKhrQp7vjxTts6wG/view?usp=drivesdk
Pen is a spur on the east side of Scafell Pike.
And offers a great viewpoint of the wild rock scenery and down into Eskdale.
There are several routes to the top of Pen, including:
Thor's Buttress: A climb that takes about 2.5 hours from the valley bottom to the top of Pen. It's recommended to use a rope for the more difficult sections.
Little Narrowcove: A route that some say is a good alternative to the popular route that ascends steeply via the far left.
And today's route featured in the video The left side that involves finding a faint path to the left of a stream and then an easy walk to the summit.
Once at the top of Pen, it takes about an hour to reach the summit of Scafell Pike.
Routes to the mountains from Eskdale are known for being long and over challenging terrain.
Scafell Pike is one of a horseshoe of high fells, open to the south, surrounding the head of Eskdale.
It stands on the western side of the cirque, with Scafell to the south and Great End to the north.
This ridge forms the watershed between Eskdale and Wasdale, which lies to the west.
The narrowest definition of Scafell Pike begins at the col of Mickledore 831.6 m (2,728 ft) in the south, takes in the wide, stony summit area and ends at the next depression, Broad Crag Col, c. 877.6 m (2,879 ft).
A more inclusive view takes in two further tops: Broad Crag, 935.3 m (3,069 ft) and Ill Crag, 930.9 m (3,054 ft), the two being separated by Ill Crag Col, 882.3 m (2,895 ft). This is the position taken by most guidebooks.
North of Ill Crag is the more definite depression of Calf Cove at 853.4 m (2,800 ft), before the ridge climbs again to Great End, 909.5 m (2,984 ft).
Scafell Pike also has outliers on either side of the ridge. Lingmell 807 m (2,648 ft), to the north west, is invariably regarded as a separate fell,
while Pen, 760 metres (2,490 ft), a shapely summit above the Esk, is normally taken as a satellite of the Pike. Middleboot Knotts is a further top lying on the Wasdale slopes of Broad Crag, which is listed as a Nuttall.
The rough summit plateau is fringed by crags on all sides with Pikes Crag and Dropping Crag above Wasdale and Rough Crag to the east.
Below Rough Crag and Pen is a further tier, named Dow Crag and Central Pillar on Ordnance Survey maps, although known as Esk Buttress among climbers.
Broad Crag Col is the source of Little Narrowcove Beck in the east and of Piers Gill in the west.
The latter works its way around Lingmell to Wast Water through a spectacular ravine, one of the most impressive in the Lake District.
It is dangerous in rain and treacherous in winter, as when it freezes over it creates an icy patch, with lethal exposure should you slip.
Several accidents and some deaths have occurred in Piers Gill.
Broad Crag is a small top with its principal face on the west and the smaller Green Crag looking down on Little Narrowcove. From Broad Crag, the ridge turns briefly east across Ill Crag Col and onto the shapely pyramidal summit of Ill Crag.
Ill Crag and its associated crags overlook Eskdale.
Scafell Pike has a claim to the highest standing water body in England in Broad Crag Tarn, which (confusingly) is on Scafell Pike proper, rather than on Broad Crag.
It lies at about 820 m (2,690 ft), a quarter of a mile (400 m) south of the summit.
Foxes Tarn on Scafell is of comparable height.

Its definately my go to channel and very much look forward to many more videos in 2025. Best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year 🙂🍾
Brilliant footage Andy. Can’t say I’ve seen any post that route before. Looked a stunner. Pen looks an amazing summit for its height. Hope your all well, ATVB Robert
Just found your channel mate and I really like it. I saw what you said a week ago about TH-cam being a hard nut to crack. Have you tried commenting on other TH-cam channels threads like Black Crag and Bushman and Blue? Just write comments. It might get the algorithm going
Cheers Lewis the channel is rolling along OK now...it was hard at the start getting things going but the algorithm seems much better now ill definitely bare in mind your suggestion and give it a try 👍🏻 Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😁👍🏻 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐🙏🏻

Absolutely Mark almost the shortest day of the year...i was going to do this long hard walk in Summer but thought if it got warm the heat would be a bit much for Billy...no problem for the lad in the cold and dark though in his element. A fantastic long walk loved it!! Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
@ I look forward to your videos 😃 They Really help me with my hiking in the fells. And watching how cleaver Billy is noticed him waiting on you 😂 Thanks again & take care.

Another fab video Andy! Blimey it looked cold coming down towards Mickledore.. and slippy! 😮 Billy trots on and makes the route look so easy! A long hike for December. You did well in the daylight hours. I'm looking forward to the Spring and longer days. Happy Christmas to you, Tracy and Billy 🎅
Mickledore side of the Mountain was frozen solid much much colder than Pen and the route up Rough Crag, Its so much harder in winter these Mountains become eerie and put you under pressure to get back down before dark...its a fantastic long route...lol a lot easier in Summer...bring on spring!! Have a fantastic Christmas thank you for watching the lovely feedback and support 😊👍🏻 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy, Tracey and your la'al fury pal Billybob ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
p.s. forgot to mention.. your drone footage from Pen is stunning!! 😍
Hi Andrew, your channel is definitely my go to for day hikes. As someone who is ignorant of any category other than Wainwright, I have been educated and its certainly opened my eyes, even though I have been walking in the Lakes for quite a number of years, really appreciate how much knowledge you've shared. I also follow Tracy's channel which I think compliments very well. The content from both your videos is first class and you pack much needed information that no one else seems to do. I really hope you keep on making these videos I've shared both your channels with my friends and they agree, the content is outstanding
Aww awesome Dave thank you for you watching fantastic feedback very much appreciated especially the shares...i love everything about making the videos.. the walk the music the drone flying and the whole editing process but most of all the insperation feedback like this gives me to keep on keeping on! Have a great Christmas Dave ATVB Andy Tracey and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
@@RockStar67 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to your god self, Tracy and of course the Rockstar
Sorry Andy forgot to ask, is there a story behind the Samson stones?
I think just very big impressive chunks of rock from an old rock fall, the climbers use them for bouldering and practice...I've no idea who named them 🤔
Another great film, the photography was amazing. Thankyou. Have a great Christmas.
Thanks James very much appreciated 😊 have a great Christmas 🎄 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Enjoyed that great video and adventure, I must visit Pen, looks interesting. Cheers ATB Phil 👍
Thanks Phil it's a long hard walk in to England's highest especially in winter but well worth the effort for the vast remoteness. Thanks buddy have a great Christmas 🎄 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Hi Andy and Billy the Rockstar. Wonderful opening drone footage. Very dark at the start of your adventure. The bridge was lovely. You always have great music with your drone footage, very dramatic. Billy seems to take it all in his stride. Penn was a very steep climb, well done. Magnificent views and drone footage from the top. Glad you both made it back safe and sound. Take care and stay safe. ATB 😊
Thanks as always Yvonne very much appreciated...i work hard choosing the music and love music in films and videos I just love the drama it adds I pay a subscription about (£60 a year) to epperdmic sounds so I don't get copyright issues but it's well worth it. If we don't speak before Christmas 🎄 have a wonderful one 🎅 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New year to you Tracey and Billy. 🎄🥂😊
Ey up Marra, ey up Billy, wow, what an epic day out in the mountains that was. You can't beat that walk up Eskdale and in to the Great Moss. It just blows you away every time. It seems you suffered the same crappy forecast that I did when I was out last Wednesday. I was promised 90% cloud free summits, and for the best part of it I saw bugger all! Haha All the best mate.
Aye Marra I'm so pleased I got that good light early on and no wind to get the drone up 😁 Pens a fantastic rough old hill and a great route onto the Pike...the conditions on Scafell Pike quickly change it's another world up there. Keep on keeping on Marra 😊 👍🏻 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻

Hi Andy. That looked a tough one in those conditions. Ive not done any of the fells in the Hartknott Pass area but there looks plenty to explore on a good day. I was looking at the route to Green Crag from the road to Ulpha where there is Great Worm Crag and a few more smaller ones along the way. Looks to be plenty of options anyway and need to try the boozers out in that area too. All seem to have a good reputation. Cheers Andy ATB
There's some fantastic walking above Eskdale Tony there must be more micro summits down that valley than any other 😁 Thanks as always for watching Marra and commenting 👍🏻 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
Hi Andy. Ive been checking out some of your early videos. I love the route up Raise Beck. Gorgeous waterfalls on the way up. Certainly an interesting route down and very direct. The beck on the right hand side off Willie Wife Moor (next to a plantation) on your descent looks amazing from the road with lots of waterfalls. Not sure of its name but is there a route up or down the side of it.
Birkside Gill... Sorry mate I personally don't know of a route down there (lol...ill do some research though 😊) The river heading up Raise Beck to Dollywaggon is just glorious...im looking forward to summer already 💦💦💦 Thanks as always for watching Tony very much appreciated 😊 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄

Harter Fell is my favourite Hill down Eskdale David it's a beautiful micro Mountain...all these smaller Birkett Fells are similar... And I just love an off piste adventure 😁👍🏻 Thanks as always for watching Marra 😊 ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 😊🎄
@RockStar67 yeah gotta say Harter Fell takes the crown pf peaks in Eskdale Andy ❤👍

What an adventure. Pleased you were both wrapped up.Thank you for taking me along. Some lovely spots of sunshine on the fells before it closed in. Stay safe.

Nice one I've been up the other side of spot how gill seemed awkward in places but doable the path you came down seems a better one coming back on to wha house
It's a good path Mark but easy to miss and end up on the other to Jubilee Bridge. Even harder in Summer when that bracken is up 🙄 Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
Great route, Andy. It’s great to get off-piste. We went up on La’al Ratty a couple of Boxing Days ago to do the Birketts round there. Went right over to Great Worm Crag then down over Kepple Crag, but like an idiot, missed out Broad Crag, so have to go all the way back just to do that.
Lol... Tony missing one over Eskdale gives a great excuse to have another trip back...we've covered every Hill with a classification up there...its an amazing place for some off piste adventures 😁 Big hug for Charlie hope your both keeping well buddy 😊 Thanks as always for watching ATVB Andy Tracey and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
Well done Andy and Billy the Rockstar that certainly looked hard work. Views were still stunning. Thank you. ATB 😊
Thanks as always Yvonne very much appreciated 😊 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
Ey up Marra, Billy. Brilliant, just my kind of adventure. Wandering around climbing rocks in no particular order. 🤣🤣 All the best Dave. 😀⛰🥾

Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄
I was up on Crinkle Crags from Cockley Bridge same day. Safe to say Darragh still had some wind in his sails. Lethal winds.
Aye mate definitely one to blow the cobwebs off 😁👍🏻 Thanks for watching very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻 🎄

Hi can I ask what drone you used for the aerial shots?
Hiya Eddie thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😁 I use the DJI mini 4k drone 👍🏻 ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Another lovely walk Andy and Billy. We love that walk up Dodd - did it a while back coming off Carl Side. We didn't realize there was a route off that way. As a couple of others have said, Black Crag has just put up a vid of the same route off. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊
Thanks guys as always very much appreciated...I watch Black Crag (Top Man) lol his take on the route was very much the same mine 😁🤣 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Hi Andy and Billy, love this route. Ive only used the main path before and that was for descent from Dodd after doing the Ullock Ridge. Great to see different routes and up and down and Tracey put a different descent on too so plenty of choices on the next visit. ATB
Thanks as always for watching Tony Mate 😊... Its a great la'al route... when ya can't get up the High Fells that's when ya'll find me in't Forest Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy, Tracey and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
As mentioned by others, Glen (Black Crag) just posted his video of this walk and, like you, came off the nose. I posted a comment on Glen's video regarding same path, that once you get into the pines, it's the most unpleasant path I have EVER been on, certainly in the Lakes. Steep, lots of roots, dark but by far the worst aspect were the lateral small branches off the pines that are across the path for the entire section and they grab hold of everything, most of them seemingly at face height. And I did it in the Summer! Never again!
Aye Rick it's a tough old descent especially when wet saying that I love these roughneck routes...ill definitely give it a go up in dry weather 😁 Thanks for watching buddy Tek care and stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
What a cracking little walk Andy. I planned to do this hike next time I'm up there. I was going to come down the way you did but I'm not too sure now. Looking at your Locus map I see you took the branch off path to the right. Wonder what the path is like if you had gone straight on. I haven't used Locus maps. Have to say it looks very clearly marked on your phone. Anyway I'm deviating a bit now. Thanks for sharing Andy, much appreciated. Love that little orange. Always raises a smile on my face. Say hello to Tracey and give Billy a hug from me. ATB David
Yes definitely David I need to take a look at that path forward it looks intresting like it'll give you a longer walk so it's on't list 😊 The Locus Mapping is fantastic it has multiple map formats includeing OS... Thanks as always for watching Marra very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Very similar walk that Black Crag did very recently. Lovely walk with good views. Thanks.
Thanks for watching Ian very much appreciated 😁 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Andrew, fabulous walk and commentary as ever. You guys are great viewing. I have a question about your headwear, are they buffs you wear? I've been looking into wearing something cooler than a hat but that still gives me some warmth. Cheers
Hiya Darren the head gear...just cut up buffs mate I make them myself..great in the summer to keep the sun off your forehead and sweat out your eyes...and great in the winter if like me you overheat...I've also a couple with fleece inside I also stitched up myself. Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
@RockStar67 Thanks Andrew, I really appreciate that information. I'll have to give it a go. I look forward to seeing more adventures. Keep up the great videos 👌
