I was a FUJI dealer in the late 80's while having a shop in San Jose Ca, and the only FUJI dealer in SJ I loved their bicycles but they made it so hard for us to carry their product, every time I needed a few bicycles I had to drive all the way up to San Francisco to their office there and pay cash, several months later we decided to break ties with FUJI, current day FUJI is no longer in the U.S. Sad to say all of the GREAT Japanese brands are no longer sold in the States.

Thanks for watching👍
I just came across this video, nice work! Sweet bike! I'll be replacing my '92 Bianchi Project 5 cross bike, now used for touring, with a Surly, either Straggler, Midnight Special or Disc Trucker. Thanks for a great tour. Oh, and I use a "Selle Anatomica" saddle, similar to the Brooks, but the SA comes in a rubber version that I like for touring. Weatherproof and comfortable. See you out there.
Thanks for watching and good luck with your new bike! I have that Anatomica now too! It's great - It fits me better than the Brooks
Would love to have one of those forks myself, but could never afford it on my disability income. As I am legally blind I cycle everywhere too. Oh just a side note there is now a company making 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed freewheels. I can't even mention their name or youtube deletes my post, but they are easy to find. I have the 9 speed personally.
Thanks for the tip👍
Can‘t wait for Surly to finally offer modern disc brake mounts for all of their bikes. Why launch a new bike in 2023 (Preamble) with a bracket standard that has been obsolete for ages?
There's def a good bit of overlap in the Surly models. 👍
You'll have to explain that one; what's obsolete about the bottom bracket used on the Preamble, and all the other road bikes? British standard 68mm threaded type bottom brackets will be with us bicycles forever.
@@petergibson7287 disc brake brackets
I'm currently hunting for a new frame for my Clydesdale. It's not easy to find a good affordable frame that can fit both the 1 1/8 threadless and also fit the gear range I'm hoping for. Thanks for showing the build!
Happy hunting! Thanks for watching!

I have that bike hanging in my storage that I bought at a garage sale. Mine is stock, but now plan on changing the bars, and adding some things. Right now it is getting new rubber first, but will ask about bars. Your video was very cool to find.
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
8-pack plus that "plate" seems like a more versatile option than the 24-pack, allows to you to get a little leaner if so desired.
yeah, I have both, I like the TV tray better
How much was the cost of everything with labor?
Too much lol
Was 59cm the right size for you? I'm about the same height but all legs. Excited that State make a 62cm frame
Yeah - the sizing was perfect, I'm 6'4" and wear a 34 or 36" pants
rad fishing rod holder. nice bike! thanks for posting this.
Thanks man, I wish someone sold these - they're easy to make
Very Cool!
Thanks for watching!
i don't understand the appeal of this overpriced fork which does manage to drop the center of gravity of a load a little bit, but it doesn't offer steering that's independent of the load's swing weight, like a real cycletruck does. And the fork alone costs half as much as a brand new LGB, complete. I've ridden MTBs with a Wald #157 Giant Delivery basket over the stock 26" front wheel, and they're great. I've also ridden real Cycletrucks, and they're even greater.
Thanks for watching! Maybe it's second type of cool 👍
@@MulksBikes i think it's got some appeal, but it's like $335. That's bananas, and i think a lot of the ppl who like this fork are unaware of the drawbacks that come with mounting the rack to the fork, Rather than to the frame
Dork disks are very functional and a kind of flex since noone runs them so its a kind of do you dare to ask why thing
Thanks for watching!
Ha ha! Rd cable is way too short!
Thanks!
@ 6:24 into the video it’s Confusing as to why you would tell people how to successfully steal this bike?
The video would be great if you would edit this part out.

Any idea on where I can get that frame bag?
dbags.bigcartel.com/ I think it's from here if I'm not mistaken
is that a 139 wald rack?
Yep!
What's that? His fingers are sore? Well that's to bad because he just pulled landscaping duty.
Haha
What size is the set screw for axle?
I'm not sure on the size, my lbs had them in stock. You can find them on Performance Bike "SURLY STRAGGLER FRAME REPLACEMENT DROPOUT SCREWS"
@@MulksBikes M4 screw. Should be 50mm long
Just broght this but in navy blue, since the matte black and olive green was sold out. Got it for cruising here in south Florida. Whats a good tire/tubes that wont kill the budget.
I put Teravail Ramparts on it. Panaracer Gravelkings are pretty easy to find and are a good economical solution too
Hey, up in Stuart, north if West Palm. I went with the Panaracer Gravel King SS in the 38, very happy with them
Heck yeah! I'm building one right now! Getting paint done then it's on. Very cool build.
Thanks for watching!
Nice build dad
Thanks for watching 🤙
the squeaks is not a bug, it's a feature, a safety feature for signalling a stop
Good call! 👍🤣
Nice to see a cargo fork bike with a triple. I keep seeing other cargo bikes in 1x or single speed. Bigger loads should be matched with lower gears I think. Sweet bike!
Totally agree - I'm very pro-triple👍 thanks for watching
Wheelies, bunny hop . . . but can ya take it off any sweet jumps? 😀
We definitely need to find out @jdandy! 🤣
Love it!
Awesome build!
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
I didnt see anyone else say, so... For the old school style of canti brakes, you need to drop the yoke until it's just above the top of the tire for proper braking performance. The way they are now it's no wonder the bike doesn't brake well. Canti brakes are great, they just need proper adjustment. Otherwise they wouldn't have been specced on touring bikes (i.e. lots of weight) for decades. Perfect do-anything bike, very nice!
Thanks for the tip - I'll pass it along! Thanks for watching!!
I have the same bike in a 46 as I am old (76) and short, 5'1" with short arms and a short torso. I have basically redone the whole bike, the frame and wheels are stock. Swapped in an All City 165 crank, Specialized 38cm Short Reach drops, Shimano brake hoods/levers, brought the stem in with a Whisky 80cm. 0 offset Thomson seatpost , Selle Anatomica leather saddle. The specs say you can run up to a 42 tire, but I have heard 50s will clear. Depends on the tire I suppose. I run a 38 Panaracer Gravel King +Super Slicks on mine. Totally enjoy this bike and ride it or a previous edition I enjoy just as much, set up pretty much the same way , a 4130 a Van Dam with 32s on it every day. I don't go that far 15-20 miles for exercise and fun. Thanks for the video , enjoy the ride!
Thanks for watching! Nice to hear from another 4130 owner 👍
There might be japanese bikes for 5'1??? 👀
@@Psp-id7uw I bet there are or from Taiwan, Wabi etc, but these work for me and when I got my original 4130 the Van Dam during the Covid stuff, State had stock when no one else did and I got the bike and was on the road in a week. I'm just out to enjoy the ride
Nice build. I have bikepacking KM that I plan to convert to trail bike for 2024, nice to know that 140mil suspension is acceptable ( manual says 100mm)
Thanks for watching - I called Surly a dozen times over the years with those questions, they're always extremely helpful. It's spec'd at 140, you can also verify a lot of those details in the FAQ on their site. It's mentioned a half dozen times. It's been very helpful in all my builds. Good luck with your KM conversion - I'm sure it'll be sweet!
All my bikes are ... A rigid mountain bike at times ! 😅 Nice Salsa
Right on!
I enjoyed his bike tour. Good seeing what the 80s had in terms of touring and how it can transform with today's tech.
Right?! I've grown so much appreciation for this era of Fuji since we filmed this. Such a high value design - Thanks for watching!
Back in 1985 I bought a Schwinn Tempo,(frame by Panasonic)..I still have it..Only the frame and seat post are original..I rode 34 century plus rides this year on it!…Like you it is my significant other 😂Flat bars with inboard and outboard bar ends,28mm Gatorskins 👍I have 12 bikes but this is my favorite…
34 centuries makes me tired just thinkin' about it😱 Nice work! Thanks for watching👍
Get a room😂
really like yalls style if i lived closer i would be a reg customer
how'd you strip the bars? I got some surly opens and love how yours look, would like to do it myself. just a sander? or oven cleaner? I got to know.
Good question - I'll ask
@@MulksBikes thank you!
I have a circa 1986 Raleigh Kodiak. I think the front fork is not origional. It looks like it's off of a mountain bike? Anyway, does anyone know where i could find a nice touring front fork for a vintage 80's bike?? thanks . nice video.
Not sure what your steerer, trail, or length is, but you might look at Soma Fab forks. They make a bunch. 👍
This was the most enjoyable bike check video I've seen in so long. Thanks for posting! I feel heckin inspired to work on my beater conversion now.
Thanks for that - more on the way! Good luck on your build
Amazing bicycle 💪🏻💪🏻🧡ciao da Milano Italy 👋🏻
Grazie!!
The dork disk is no joke. I have the same frame and love it. It came to me two years ago. On my first trip out, the original Suntour derailleur went into the spokes. The bike stopped. I did not. Luckily, I was riding slow. I jumped over the handlebars and landed on my feet. It destroyed the derailleur. I replaced it with a vintage Suntour Cyclone. I love the bike. Rode it all 7 days of RAGBRAI this year and ran into another guy with the same Fuji frame.
Glad you're okay! Dork disk for life ✊ Thanks for watching Nick!
It is a disk, but not dorky…. low profile, black, stealthy…. needs a new appropriate name…. :)
My Touring V is marvelous. '80s Fujis are the best
I'm becoming a believer 👆
Beautiful setup, enjoy the rides.
Thanks 👍
Very cool bike. One thing not discussed was the frame. Back then Fuji was using Ishiwahta designed frames and they were outstanding. For this bike, they used a lugged, QUAD butted high end CroMoly frame, resulting in a very light, durable steel framed bike. No wonder this is your fastest bike!! Personally, I own a '85 Fuji Opus III road bike that I switched out the drop downs for a flat bar set up for my own comfort. It also has the quad butted CroMoly frame and its' advertised weight was only 20 lbs - insane for a steel framed bike!! It's the best feature of these bikes.
Whoa that's pretty cool! Maybe I should be looking for a vintage Fuji now. That's interesting - thanks for watching!
A friend interstate is a FUJI expert .
I have an 85 mark IV that i found in a trash heap, welded the rear canti posts lower for 700, crimoee for tire clearance, its my favorite bike and probably my fastest because its so damned comfortable Love it
Comfort counts! Thanks for watching 🤙
