Mx-5 NA - Eunos Roadster - Nordschleife BTG 9:20 - 22.08.2023
First time round the Nürburgring Nordschleife in my Mx-5, not counting the two granny laps I did in 2016 on the trip home to Denmark, when I imported it from the UK.
I had promised myself not to go before I had a roll bar installed, but my Fiat Panda that I was planning to bring again, was waiting for a drive shaft and didn't get ready in time, so what are you gonna do ...?
Then I made myself a new promise, to try and take it easy, because no roll bar, but I forgot about that a few times, but this lap was quite conservative though, and it was the only one I got without yellow flags, and both cameras running, so decided to upload that.
Pads on the dash for my Mx-5! - it drove me 2250km over the span of 6 days including 6 laps at the ring, and didn't miss a beat!

Eunos Roadster V-special 1.8 with stock 128 Bhp stock 5-speed and 4.1 Torsen LSD, and 195/50r15 wheels on 6x15 enkei "Phoenix" rims. It´s a very early 1.8 build in September 1993 (second month of production), so it still has the old "1.6" dash, and analog oil pressure gauge.     disconnecting steering wheel position sensor disables the stability control but keeps the abs working

      Thanks, tried that, but the servo then went away as well. I have cut a black wire to the "gyro" box between the seats now, and soldered in a switch, and that works.

      No, I haven't really, knock on wood. It has been a very reliable car to me. I bought it over 4 years ago, and the most expensive thing i replaced was the clutch, but that is a wear item, like brakes, exhaust, cam belt etc. They are starting to get old though so rust is a factor, and I had to weld up both rear rocker panels to pass the MOT. Rear axles will rust away too, and are very hard to find.

    Great driving. I bet that GTI driver has buyers remorse after this. Love the 100HP. I can't find one for sale in South Africa. They are rare here.

      Thanks :) Nah man, he was just new to the track. I actually think he did pretty well checking his mirrors and keeping to the right for faster traffic - he wasn't the best for spotting the yellows though lol. I love the 100HP too, and they are also very rare here in Denmark. Hope you get one!

    Really excellent track driving/control! I think better tyres would sharpen the handling/control, and possibly putting some spacers on to widen the track front and rear. Where is your Panda? Fit the original tyres on that car, widen the track with spacers, fit the bilstein pro kit and upgrade to brembo typ 3 upgraded sport discs and pads and the lap times with your driving will fall considerably in my opinion.

      @cbca6567 I completely missed your comment, so sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the compliment :) Very true that better tyres and other mods would bring the laptimes down, but the laptimes are just not that important to me. It was by far more important for me to make the car handle well, with a good predictable setup, and I'm pretty satisfied so far, but will continue to improve it (and the car is used 95% on the street... ) That said, I would love to try a set of semi slicks sometime, but I'm afraid that with a lot grip and low power, it will just become too boring - with the Panda I'm pretty sure that would be the case.

    This is a nice lap. Decent pace out the car with some respectable cornering speeds. I really like Tein Flex Z as a street coilover

      Thanks a lot 🙂 It handles so well, and it's relatively easy to drive. I really like the flex z's as well, only downside is the limited travel - I adjusted mine to give me maximum bump at the rear, but the second oversteer moment clip at the end of the video, I suspect is down to lacking droop travel 🙃 Any input on that, please?

    Good stuff man, looked lots of fun! The brakes seem a bit soft to be honest, but you got it down quite well despite it. Looks like you could go under 9 if things align! I honestly miss that momentum driving a bit, its so focused on precise inputs. Hey man let me know when you're doing another trip and I'll come say hi :)

      Thanks, It was really good fun! I had promised myself not to go to the ring in my Mx-5 before I got a roll bar, but my Panda didn't get ready in time, so what are you gonna do? So I took it a bit easy and didn't go looking for the limits, but I still found a few, as you can see in the clips after the lap ends. The brakes are standard, besides the Roddisons pads in front, so not the best, but the brakes looking a bit soft, is mostly down to me, again because I was taking it somewhat easy. I also think that it will go under 9 as it is, it's just a question if I dare try to get there ... And I definitely get why you miss momentum cars - they are "da shizzle", and the punishment for loosing momentum is real - like when meeting a bouncing GT3 in the apex of mutkurve ! I was actually gonna write to you to see if you were around, but the trip got cut short due to a buddies knee injury ;( - I will give you a shout next time :)

      I was very surprised the first time on track, to see how capable they are! On the street they can seem a bit wallowy , especially over bumps and such, but push them a bit, and they come alive 🥰 And yeah, a few more horse in the stable would be welcome 🤗

    great time and very brave you are pushing on the limit! However I would go to a tech garage and go into the software to disable the ESP permanently. Also get some 195/45 R15 original Good Year F1 tyres which Good YEar still produce and have changed compund recently to be as upto date as their other tyres. Then post a time!

      Thanks for the compliment and for your input. The tyres were horrible, and old, and are now replaced, but with 195/50R15 kumho hs52's. The higher profile due to both price and comfort. The hs52's because I loved them on my mx5. I just figured out how to disable the ESP last week, and I have soldered in a switch. I don't know if I will ever go for it as much as I did on this lap, but at least it will feel so much better and safer with ABS next time 🙂

      @@testacorsa150 your lower profile (than before) and newer tyres, plus the added ABS will surely make the car more safe and faster on the lap. Well done anyway! Chassis is very stiff compared to my much older Alfa from the 1970s, and I think the Panda 100hp chassis and suspension setup is better than the Fiat 500 Abarth one, even if it has a tjet engine

      @@cbca6567 Yeah, I think it will help the car too, and I'm looking forward to going again in August - and thanks again 😊 The Panda chassis is definitely not bad, but the suspension kinda sucks, especially the rear axle. If it was allowed in Denmark, i would have switched to a KA/late 500 rear axle to get an anti roll bar, to maybe cure some of the massive understeer. It will never be a fast car, but it's still good fun :) I really envy your classic alfa. One of the best onboards I have ever seen was some classic race from the ring. The racing was so close and on the edge, and the old Giulia was tossed around on the limit, and it seemed like it loved it, lol. Sadly I can't find that video anymore.

      @@testacorsa150 thanks for your reply and complements! I agree the rear axle is the weak point, but for the road it is fine. For track yeah needs something better. It is not so fast that you cannot use all the power most of the time. Regarding the Alfa i own a transaxle alfetta, but its chassis is very soft despite excellent 50/50 weight distribution, low unsprung weight with inboard rear discs and front torsion bars. The race cars were welded and supported with braces and rollcages for the chassis. Anyhow it was much better than anything in its class in the 70s.

      Thanks :) I drove on 7 year old Continental ContiEcoContact (185/55R15) 🙈 Hard a a rock, and no grip 😁 Only one way to find out how fast your Fiat is to go there. I can only recommend it, if you haven't been there yet!

      Panda = Sigma Ride. Couple days ago I did 21 hour non-stop drive in my 19 year old 1.2 Panda with from Netherlands to Latvia and I did a lot of spirited driving throughout. This thing is the ultimate GT, all you need on the Autobahn and reliable af! ;)

      I went with 2 bar. I drove a lap, and then checked the pressure when I came in, and lowered it to 2 bar again with the tyres hot.

      ​​@@testacorsa150 Thank you. I just bought the old Panda from my son, it's the same as yours, 2008 model with ~133000km on the clock. Some repairs to be done, but I want to keep it as long as possible just for fun. I'm surprised how well cornering works with your Panda.

      @@Felix-fy7ki Oh, nice. Those cars will last a looong time, and are so easy and cheap to maintain and repair. If you are running the original tyres the tyrepressure should be 2 bar front and 1.8 bar rear. (13 and 14 inch wheels.) Congrats and enjoy it. I think you are going to love that little fun box.       ​​@@testacorsa150 I'm already in love with it, although my main car is an Opel Astra GTC! 😅 Unfortunately there's a hole on the right side just in front of the rear wheel because of corrosion. I'll have it welded as soon as possible. There are some electronic issues as well (steering, ignition) and the spring at the front of the air filter housing to tie it to the cylinder head is missing. For road use I have front 2,5bar and rear 2,2bar in the tires to avoid aquaplaning and to reduce wear when cornering. And I need some new summer tires as well. Any tips on that? 14 inch Fiat alloy wheels.

      @@Felix-fy7ki A GTC is another kettle of fish, and fun in completely different ways 😀 I just did the rust on my 100HP, both sides, rear sills - it sucked! If you can, get the panels; I made mine up, and it was not fun. 2,5 bar and 2,2 will probably be overenfaltion, so your tyres deform in the middle, giving you a smaller contact patch, which isn't ideal - but good on fuel though :) That spring is always missing. I just used a zip until I found a spring after a year or so. If you can get them in 14" I can recommend Kumho HS52. I have them on my 100HP and my mx5 (had the HS51 before that). Very good semi budget tyre.

    Have you tried to disconnect the Steering position sensor? I read that disables the ESP fully but I have not tried it yet on my Car. But when I do hard launches the ESP sometimes even stalls the engine and when oversteering the rear brakes engage and straighten the car out in a weird way causing massive understeer so yeah, ESP makes it even more unpredictable to drive.

      I don't know where the sensor is located, so I haven't tried it, but maybe I will. (Is it somewhere on the steering column?) I'm also a bit afraid of messing with the steering to be honest, because the electric servo can be fragile on the Pandas, and are expensive and a pain to change. Another option that should work, is to cut the black wire (earth) to the yaw sensor. Haven't tried that either though. ESP as a safety feature, is reasonable, but not being able to turn it off when tracking the car, is a pain and definitely kills the fun.

    Just found your channel. You don't fail to impress. I love how the fast cars (like the Porsche) try to 'easily get past the panda' but you get back at them in the bends.

    With semi slicks, the oem size brakes will go off very soon. Tried it @hungaroring.

      There is a video on youtube, with a dude doing a 9:30 with semi slicks, and he has no problems with brakes. The nürburgring isn't too hard on brakes, as long as you don't have too much power i.e. speed.

    I drive a 2008 Panda, 1.2 petrol, 60 hp. These things are as wicked as an A-segment car gets in the hands of a skilled driver. I can't imagine what you could pull off in the 95 hp diesel version of this car or even in one with 4WD

They tick more boxes than most cars, fun, practical, economical, reliable, cheap to run, etc. I just took my panda 100hp to the track this summer - so you can check those videos on my channel too, if you like.

    Sweet lap, great fun to watch! Its funny to watch the speed differences between various machinery and skill levels - you are passing the tourists in the rentals like they are standing still, and in turn a GT3 or similar will fly past you further down the track :D

      Thank you. That's an interesting observation. It's such an action packed and intense experience, for those reasons. You really have to be so focused at all times, because you encounter everything, from very slow first timers you have to pass, to full blown race cars like those insanely fast GT3's. It's really good fun too, though :)

    An idea. On my Volvo C30 I can turn the ESP completely off and retain ABS by temporarily disabling the yaw sensor using a switch. :)

      Thank you. It's just on the standard 230.000 km suspension, apart from the rear shocks that are from a 500 afaik :)
