    What’s the point of having any car and not putting miles on it. Cars are meant to be driven!!!

  • @logankidd4184

    I have a 99 I picked up to replace an '84 944 that I bought as a birthday present to myself and sold a few years later. The 944 was a solid foot into the Porsche world but the '80s cars I could afford just didn't have enough grunt. The 99 feels like everything I could ever want in a car and even though mine is high mileage, it's worn it well and I never want to let this one go. I've been hunting down original parts and am aiming for as close to a new feeling original car as I can get. Looking forward to many more years and miles, cheers!

    I upgraded to the same after market glass window you have but in hindsight I should have paid the extra and gone with Porsche OEM from 2003/2004 instead. The Porsche one has a much bigger glass window plus the fourth frame for more compactness in a variety of colour choices that imo is worth the extra money.

    • @Boxster986Fan
      @Boxster986Fan 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wasn’t ever sure if the 2003/2004 Porsche OEM with the new frame could be put on the 1997-2002 models. I had loosely heard it could be but never really read/found an official answer. Are you saying that it definitely CAN be put on the 1997-2002 models? That would be great question to finally have an answer to. 🙂

    I made my own grill radiator protectors. I used plastic mesh for rain gutters. I made traced a pattern of the opening then cut the mesh to fit. I then hit glued and used some small zip ties as well to secure the mesh. Unless you look closely you can’t see all of this. So far after two years they have worked.

    I think that the key thing is not to lug the engine (Trying to accelerate in too high a gear) and to use the full rev range regularly. The car is really on song between 4.2k and 6.5k RPM but it's happy cruising at 1.5k. Just change down if you are going to accelerate.

    I warm the car up staying at the 3000rpm through the gears. Once it’s been warmed up I try to shift in higher rpm particularly if I’m getting on the freeway merging into traffic. Again depending on the conditions and etc.

      I definitely enjoy the car the most from 3500-4200 or so. You’ve got me thinking I shouldn’t do a quick search to find out which RPM range is where the car has that quick pickup. Even though Boxsters are “slow” there is that spot where the pickup is significantly increased. I feel like mine is at 4200-4400

    I bought my S new in 2003. It started as a daily driver/Nurburgring car while I was living in Germany and clocked up 60k miles with at least 10k of that done on track. I then moved countries, had a kid and was given company cars so the 986 ended up neglected in my garage for 8 years. I got it back on the road 3 years ago and it's now a Sunday/project car which I'm working through on my drive. It'll never be sold. Along with maintenance and restoration work, I'm just doing some light styling mods to freshen it up a bit (spacers, side stripes, black bits etc). It's now 21 years old, has 75k miles and is in great shape on the whole.

    • @Boxster986Fan
      @Boxster986Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are they there on your Boxster? My guess is the plastic gets brittle after 20 years and the tabs break when people take them off for one reason or another. Or maybe a mechanic takes them off and forgets to put them back in. I didn't have them for the first 6 months because I wasn't even aware they were supposed to be there. For how affordable they are, it's worth it to have them even to just keep leaves and such out of there where they can block the water drains under the clamshell.

    **Update** Wanted to add an update here. Just the other day I did experience the blue smoke again but only once. Here is my theory. I had washed the car and then started it for 2 min and only drove it 20 feet into the garage and it never warmed up. The next time I started it 3 days later is when the blue smoke occurred. My theory is if you start it for only 2 min, the next time you start it you may get some oil burn off. I’ve since started it after it’s been sitting for 7-8 days and no blue smoke. Just a theory. But all is still good, no blue smoke since. (and even if there is some every so often, it’s all good nothing to worry about)

But my Boxster will be a classic someday too because it’s what saved Porsche plus it really is a fantastic car.

    Great, clear video! Where can I get those plugs and what are they called? Thanks!

      I bought a few types to make sure I had the right ones. For some reason they are all labeled as VW plugs but they are the correct ones. I've never been able to fins any labeled for Porsche. Here is one that I used that fit the best: www.ebay.com/itm/256107690533 Here is the other one I bought in case you want to see which fits best for you: www.amazon.com/PIT66-1998-2012-Beetle-Mk4-Transporters/dp/B0D1QLMVZG/ref=sr_1_2?crid=37057EBYQ7PGU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.e15O3Vkapcnvos7LDMlFWwt5Y0lRfjm06X65X47hKvg.bnTGkLSDw1oQP6Ox-sax1mXatc9t3V1fAD-fqGALaEA&dib_tag=se&keywords=PIT66%2BBlend%2BDoor%2BFoam%2BFix&qid=1714190482&sprefix=pit66%2Bblend%2Bdoor%2Bfoam%2Bfix%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-2&th=1

    I guess we are in the same camp. My 24 year old Boxster still is basically stock. Owning it now three years I’ve done the necessary maintenance at 67,000 miles. The only mod is the dual exhaust which was on the car when I purchased it. I just finished installing a short throw shifter.

    My glass rear window makes it very hard to access the engine from the top. It doesn't "fold" out of the way.

    • @Boxster986Fan
      @Boxster986Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes indeed that is the biggest downside to the glass window option😕

      @@Boxster986Fan It still isn't my real obstacle to getting the old AOS out. The middle hose connected is just too difficult to remove with a sprained wrist!

      @Boxster986Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’m not looking forward to the time when I need to replace my AOS. I know it’ll come soon. Be sure to order this clamp as it makes the job 10x easier when reattaching the lower hose: www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/99951263000.htm?pn=999-512-630-00-OEM&bc=c&SVSVSI=&ByPassCat=Y

    Apart from basic mechanical sympathy re warming a combustion engine up and then not having it sitting at the limiter while you're cruising along in too low a gear, etc, my advice for maximum enjoyment is to not sweat it. Drive how you enjoy. Getting hung up on this is a recipe for stress, not enjoyment and in terms of longevity, there are so many factors, you're not going to get a clear answer. I mean, you could decide that you don't want to sit at / around the Variocam changeover point because then you'll probably be actuating Variocam a lot and that could wear it out. Or you could decide that sitting at the same revs all the time is a bad idea. Or worry about stretching the rods at high rpm. Or whatever. That line of thinking is a waste of time. Just enjoy the car.

    • @Boxster986Fan
      @Boxster986Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh I agree 100%. I was more curious only because I’ve heard so many people say these cars should be driven at a higher RPM above 3000. So I was just trying to find out if there was any truth to that or if we should just do what you are saying and enjoy it and drive it the way we want to.😎

    I have the original vinyl window and very annoying getting out and doing the karate chop to fold vinyl in correct place to avoid splitting. Have been wanting to upgrade to glass window, Are there any issues with folding down?

    • @Boxster986Fan
      @Boxster986Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Window folds perfectly without any need to get out. Some people are bothered by the smaller window but I guess since I’ve only had the smaller one I’m used to it and it doesn’t bother me. As shown in the video the biggest thing to be aware of is the much smaller opening when accessing the top engine compartment. That can be a deal breaker for a lot of people. If say money wasn’t a problem, you could do some research to see if it’s possible to put the newer frame with the Porsche OEM glass window top on your car. I believe that’s the only way to get glass and a window that allows full opening access to the engine.

    Porsche had it broken down to 7 types of owners for their cars. Had it taught to me a brand ambassador training. All of it was very interesting.
