Do you know anything about studying grad school online?
Hello Allyssa. Thanks so much for recommending my Encyclopedia of Counseling and my 47 Minute Super Review You Tube Video. BTW, my new Master Lecture Series book contains a super review that has more information than any I have ever penned! It can also be purchased in Audible for audio learning. Congratulations on your new test prep guide. It sounds like a useful and valuable tool.
Marriage and family therapy focuses on approaching the client I.e. individual, couple or family from a systemic perspective! Meaning the whole system even for an individual can make up the problem. It just heavily all around is systemic practice based..
Im starting GRAD school for my MED in Counseling CMHC, and I'm about to accept an offer for a job as an academic advisor while in grad school. I do want to work at a college as a mental health counselor so I think its a good fit.
There is no 1st and 2nd "C" here in CA :) We just do the 3,000 hours as an APCC (Associate Professional Clinical Counselor) and each year we must attempt the Law & Ethics exam (not necessarily pass it ... just take it at least once a year every year until we pass it) and then once we're finished we submit the hours and once we get the green light we take the test and then that's it :)
Thank you for your help, insights, enrichment materials, and encouragement, Alyssa! God Bless you! ✨🤗🙌🏽🏆
It would have been helpful had you also provided examples or answered the questions for us.
You mentioned keeping notes. How about textbooks? Would you recommend buying vs renting? I typically rented ebooks in undergrad, but for grad school, I'm not sure if keeping them for future reference is better as they may phase out. Thank you for your videos.
I never used textbooks to study outside of the DSM.
thank you
Seeing life as gray isn’t a virtue, especially not believing that there is an absolute, that spells disaster in a humans life living in Gods created order
I did a lot of research and applied to many schools before deciding on a program. My MED in Counseling CMHC specialization at Lindsey Wilson College here in KY is 34,575, which is very affordable. I even thought 45k was too much for a CMHC Masters Program. I'll be doing a payment plan. I have a lot of money saved, plus I get tuition reimbursement for my job at Goodwill, which is 5k a year. My program is 100% online and divided into modules and sections, so I can work full-time! My program is CACREP, which has been accredited since 1996. So, fellow students, be sure to examine how long the program has had its CACREP accreditation? Loving your videos, by the way!
Love that, it sounds like you found the program that met all your needs!
Have you thought of making a “mock therapy session” type of video to help show how some of these techniques and just therapy in general looks? I know sometimes it can be helpful to see more concrete examples of what some of these concepts look like and sometimes classes don’t bluntly show what it looks like in the real world!
I think this is different for people in California they don’t require or recognize CACREP plus that’s usually for LPCCs California is more MFT so you can maybe look for the accreditation for that which is COAMFTE but even that one is not recognized or required by California. NCE is also not required in California. Just thought I’d d share for those in California.
Yes this is a great point, it seems like MFT's have their own process.
That's so not true. You don't have to be a people pleaser to be a great therapist. Just need to be a good listener and use empathy and sympathy appropriately. Thank you 💗 💛 💗
I have a question for you, Allyssa! The school I am going to is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSOC), but not CACREP. I have seen most sources say you must go to a CACREP accredited school, but when I did research I saw that you just need to be regionally accredited, the main difference being name recognition and a possibility of an easier licensure process if you move states. Hearing I need to be going to a CACREP accredited school so frequently makes me anxious! I feel like I'm missing something. What are your thoughts?
Are you wanting to become an LPC? Going to a CMHC program?
@ yes, I’m in a CMHC program on track to become an LPC
I love my online program but placement is definitely a tricky aspect. Some schools market that they have a placement team, which they do, but experiences are very mixed and it is definitely a hurdle for many students. I am one that felt very passionately about networking myself to find a place that I would love (and I did) so I was never interested in the placement team being the main finder of my site, but for those looking for that, in person might be more helpful. Location of the online school can matter too, especially if it's a big name school. The state where the school is located usually has a lot of placement options that they have already had students at in the past so proximity can help too even if it's still online.
Ah thanks for sharing that experience, I am glad to hear your found a placement you love! Did you do practicum there as well as your internship?
@ finishing practicum now and staying there for internship which starts in January!
Hi, I am looking for an online program CACREP accredited in Texas, do you have any recommendations?
Thank you! I appreciate the content you present here. Very informative! ❤
So glad that it helped!
Just to make sure I am in the right place ... I need to pass this test to become an LPCC in CA?
In Ohio its after 2 years and a specific amount of hours worked you can take it to get your "second C". I would check the California board website just to be sure.
Yes! Once you have accrued the 3,000 hours as an associate counselor you get your hours approved through the board, apply to take the NCMHCE, and once passed you become an LPCC in CA!
@@holisticjess Okay so it's the same test whether I am taking it here or in another state right? Same subject matter? Is that so it will make it easier for counselors to work in other states someday w/o having to retake the test over and over in each state?
@@sherisevalentygibb Each state test requirement is different! Also different states require different courses obtained from a Master's program, it's very annoying. You can look online and check what you need for each state to become licensed.
Counseling isn't advice. It's empowering a person to make their own decisions. Otherwise it's a co dependent relationship.
i'm single and considering getting my masters in social work and doing private practice (im pivoting careers) but this was so so incredibly discouraging 😢 maybe i should stick to my soulless and depressing marketing career
I’d love to have a conversation with you about this
I do think private practice is one avenue that can be very lucrative, especially if you have a background in business/marketing...but not everyone wants to do that aspect of it.
@elie.bb15 what did you end up deciding? I am currently in the same boat as you, wanting to leave my soul crushing marketing job to become a therapist, and have to agree with you that this video was definitely discouraging
Thank you so much! People really need to know this.
I know! I am so glad someone told me.
I am on try #3. First two exams were NCMHCE. Both times missed it by 1 point. Thinking about trying the NCE this time. I took the CPCE a shorter version of the NCE in college and passed greatly on the first time.
Are you working to become an LPC or are you already one?
Working to become one. I have a few more supervision hours left I need to obtain and I need to pass the exam. Finished school in 2019. @allyssapowers
These traits are spot on - they're exactly what I've seen in students who are successful as a counselor. I really appreciated how you spoke to being reliable even when we're in our own pain.
Calling 80k low paying is crazy
low-est, not low. she said it’s the lowest* paying masters degree. not low paying.
How is 100$/hour low paying?
She seems to be talking about people with masters and low paying in relation to that. In terms of normal jobs it’s pretty average.
I think the typical number of clients a counselor will see is about 20 per week. You can’t see 40 clients per week you will burn out. Theres also marketing and admin you have to do as well as malpractice insurance we have to pay. When you do the math $100 per hour is low.
@@naomitatum10 how much is 100$/hr after those expenses?
My girlfriend does EMDR with her therapist virtually and loves it!! Also thank you for this video! I'm 100% planning on working remotely after grad school for my Masters in CMHC (leading to LCPC).
Can you work for yourself as an I O Psychologist?
Can you please d pl ba video breaking down what it might look like to be an I O Psychologist?
Burnout prevention is so important! I can’t wait to take your CE’s when the time comes!
Yes this is something I’m HYPER aware of, and I’ve done a lot of reconsidering about this path. I even went so far as to put out an anonymous survey asking therapists things like what their license is, how long they’ve been working, what their starting pay out of school was, current pay, job satisfaction on a scale of 1-5, if they would pursue this career again, etc and an open comment box for what they wish they’d known. I received around 55 responses! Considering the systemic issues and pay, I was surprised that the majority said they WOULD do it again. I still had resigned myself that if I didn’t hear back from the program I applied to, I would close that chapter and move on to something else. But I did get an interview- and I was surprised how happy I was about it. Then when I got picked as an alternate for Fall, I didn’t even hesitate to reapply for Spring. I got accepted outright this time! As scary as it is- I’m a divorced, single mom. Deep down I really do want to pursue this. 😍 I’ve run a successful small business in the past (photography), and I feel well versed in a lot of things that I will need to run a private practice. That’s my plan to go into ASAP. However, running a business isn’t easy by any means and my advice to anyone else on this path with me.. is to prioritize getting some side education in business!
I am a graduate student earning my MED in Counseling. im working on designing journals for passive income with prompts and affirmations.
I love that you are already building those passive income streams even in grad school!
@@allyssapowers yes, im working on a King Of Color Queen Of Color Journal
girrrrl your story is just like mine!! I got the same bachelors degree as you. I'm just starting over on all your videos. biggest regret in life is my bachelors degree. I am so glad i found this option for me.
Thank you so much for sharing this!! I am going to go through the rest of your videos. I'd love to learn more about opening your private practice! I went to school and got my teaching degree and disliked it so much, I am going back to school for a masters to become a therapist
Ah so glad you found me and welcome to the teacher dropout club!
This is exciting and I look forward to following along!
Thanks for being here tiffany!
Oooh, excited to follow your journey! I also look forward to taking your CE courses in the future (I'm applying to grad school rn!) :)
yay! I am so glad you are here!
Counseling is 10% what you learn in college and 90% your personality. You go girl this is the money quote of the day on being a counselor!!!😊
☺☺☺
This was exactly the help I needed! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Wow...good to know! My niece got her bachelor's in psychology and has taken a little time off before pursuing her Masters but I will definitely share your video. I wonder if getting training as a psychedelic therapist might improve that dynamic. It seems there will be a huge demand there eventually and it also might offer one more flexibility.
Hmm so because I don’t have a spouse are you saying I shouldn’t pursue this master’s degree? 🤔 I’m sure there are single mothers or single women who make it work. Not everyone is as privileged as you. I’m a single mother, work a full time job & have a mortgage. I’m going thru undergrad right now & would like to get a masters in counseling. I could let what you’re saying discourage me, but I usually always find a way to make things work. Thanks for info though.
You took this video a little too personally. She’s just giving out information and sharing her own experience.
maybe you should think again about pursuing counseling if you take everything so seriously
I have a massage therapy license, and I got paid $45 an hour minimum (up to $80 per hour). I can’t do massage therapy at 65 years old, so why would a masters degree pay less than that?! Private practice is the only way to be.
Very informative as always! I did know this from watching other videos etc., but it does reinforce my plan to go into private practice ASAP once I graduate
That was my exact plan too.
Great video!! Sadly I don’t have a husband but I do live with my parents now. Once I take my NCE I’m hoping to work as a university counselor or in the school systems (something along those routes.) Great video and yes counseling sadly is a low paying degree especially for the hours and work that’s done to receive your degree.
Yes at least the benefits in either of those jobs would be good!
Thank you for sharing your journey. I pray God leads you back to HIM! People and even some churches can fail us, don’t let them cause confusion. Best to you ❤
Thank you for answering my question! And your overall insight in this video. <3
I am still in graduate school for clinical mental health counseling, but I learned of a few boundaries that should not be crossed the hard way while working as a peer support specialist. I once had a client tell me that she loved me. I assumed she meant it like, "You're a cool person! I enjoy your company!" I said back, "I love you, too! I love everyone here! Coworkers, clients like you, everyone!" It was true. It was the first professional role I felt passionate about. Unfortunately, that client meant that she had romantic inclinations toward me and was convinced I felt the same the moment the words "I love you" came out of my mouth. I tried everything I could think of to clear the confusion. I consulted my supervisor. I consulted her supervisor. I talked to my own therapist about it. I dealt with awkward encounters and unfounded rumors of a love affair for the next 4 years. I had to meticulously document our interactionss and take extra precautions when the client became determined to figure out where I lived. When I asked my supervisor to reassign her, which I felt just awful about, she took it as an indication that I wanted to make adjustments professionally so we could carry on a romantic relationship without compromising my job. I crossed the boundary unwittingly, but the consequences were the same. Lesson learned? Choose your words VERY carefully! On an unrelated note, I love your videos! I just discovered you about an hour ago, and I am hooked!
Thank you for sharing. Now, I have a better idea of what it's going to be expected. I will start my program in mental health counseling next month.
I love your website. Did you hire a designer? What hosting platform are you using if you dont mind sharing? 🙏🏽
Ah you just made my day! I designed it myself using Square Space which was insanely easy compared to building my Wordpress site.
I am wondering when you are getting your 3000 hours in after graduation, does that mean 3000 clients? Or can some of those hours be indirect or not necessarily face to face with a client?
I would check with your individual board, but in Ohio all the hours are direct client hours where a diagnosis is involved.
It's usually a 40 hour work week counting indirect hours as well. The NBCC board for counselors requires 3,000 in all states.
Thanks for the clear explanation. I do have a doubt. I'm in the process of applying to grad school. I looked for programs approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in CA so that later on I could become an LMFT. But I haven't heard of CACREP. I went and looked for their approved programs and the 2 program choices I have are not on the list. What would be the downside to that?
I think for MFT's it might not matter as much, I am an LPC and I know I wouldn't have been able to sit for the NCE without going to a CACREP program. Look into if MFT's have a different accreditation. MFT's are much more common in CA than any other state for some reason so I would think the programs there would be legit.
Thanks. Now I’m applying to two programs that are BBS and CACREP accredited!! Just in case 😉
Wow I promise I have all these qualities, I’m so shocked, I’m 26 years old with a bachelors in marketing, what is the fastest way I can get to a therapist career? Please help 💕 thank you!!!
Getting a masters in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy or social work would be your three fastest paths!
