Sharing sketchbook tours and art tips. Thanks to a drawing-a-day project back in 2015, which I documented on Instagram, I returned to a regular drawing practice after a long hiatus. The last 8 years have had their bumps but I have completed a large number of sketchbooks, and have seen the benefit of making art a priority again. I hope this is a good place to give back and share my thoughts on creativity. I want to share sketchbook tours, process videos and maybe some vlogs to illustrate how I make art and get inspiration. I know how easy it is to get into a creative rut, or lose motivation, so my aim is to provide some tips and tricks to aid you in finding creative flow.
Loose drawing process, and a look into my altered sketchbook
I show how I like to loosen up my drawing in my sketchbooks. This is my current altered book sketchbook for looser or more playful drawings and paintings. Some days I want more accurate or realistic studies but I also get a lot of creative enjoyment by playing about with different mediums and colours loosely using a photo or book as a reference.

Silent Mixed Media Abstract Sketchbook Tour
มุมมอง 355วันที่ผ่านมา
This is the 3rd sketchbook from this set of three cheap journals I have completed with abstract work. I did a complete tour with a talk through the pages I have selected to alter as a new project for myself on Patreon. As it is very similar in some ways to other sketchbook tours on here, I thought it might be fun to switch things up and do a silent flick-through, well you can hear the pages tur...
Sketchbook Tour
มุมมอง 79914 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is a look through a recently completed sketchbook which contains portraits and people sketches. The first part has some altered pages where I have drawn and painted over older work. There are lots of pencil sketches and mixed media sketches in this one. In my more realistic sketchbooks, I want to find a balance between rough practice sketches and more finished visually interesting spreads....

Review of the 72 color set of Kissho Gansai paints including swatching and process
มุมมอง 51521 วันที่ผ่านมา
I recently purchased this set of 72 Kissho Gansai paints, I had my eye on this Japanese watercolour set because I had really been enjoying my smaller other Gansai sets and being a colour maximalist I wanted to try out these paints in my mixed media work. I have focused this video on these particular paints as it was helpful for me to swatch them and test them out by themselves, but next time I ...
Artist Vlog- quick look at art from this week
มุมมอง 639หลายเดือนก่อน
A review of some art made in the studio this week. It is a bit of a mix as I gave myself no theme this week for my daily art project - this worked well as youngest on half days and I like jumping between different sketchbooks as I know I can work faster in some than others. thanks for watching Sonia
Sketchbook Tour - First half of current altered abstract sketchbook
มุมมอง 774หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm really enjoying making abstract art in this altered book. I thought I'd make a tour of the first half while many of my art processes and ideas are fresh in my mind. I also wanted to take a little look through so I could think about what is working and ideas for the next half. I know many of you enjoy sketchbooks and no-pressure journals, altering a book can be a satisfying way of making you...
Art vlog, bits and bobs from this week in the studio
มุมมอง 577หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a bit of a jumble sale of a vlog; there are some clips of abstracts, and sketchbooks, including a recent gouache landscape, studio mess etc. Also included is a short abstract process video. I have really been getting into the creative flow again, a very messy creative flow that is - but maybe there are some ideas for your creative practice here, thanks for watching, Sonia
Sketchbook Tour- "Anything Goes' Journal
มุมมอง 809หลายเดือนก่อน
This sketchbook tour is of my most recent "Anything Goes" journal. It is what it says on the tin, and literally anything goes in these types of sketchbooks. Abstracts, observational, mixed media, ink, doodles, notes, collage.... I really enjoyed this one as it was a space to explore some ideas, not worry it it had a theme or style. I have to confess I do end up covering up pages sometimes in th...
Some reasons not to take your art too seriously - Art chat
มุมมอง 995หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my follow-up to the video on why you should take your art seriously. As artists perhaps we gravitate to one side of this more than the other. I feel I have benefited from both viewpoints, personally, I feel I switch a bit, some days I like to embrace getting serious, and other days a more lighthearted approach works for me. As I conclude in this video, I aim to take my time and effort s...
My thoughts on taking your art seriously - an art chat
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This is a two-part chat about my thoughts on why you should take your art seriously / romanticize your process. The other side to this theme is why you should have a laugh, not take your art too seriously- but I have found both viewpoints have helped me, at various points, to get the best out of my art practice. The thinking part of art, or the why is important to me- I love knowing that creati...
A look at art from this week- mixed media sketchbooks and drawings
มุมมอง 877หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a review of my daily drawing project and the art I have been completing during the week. Artist Vlogs are still a work in progress for me, I do enjoy watching them, drawing to them myself so I want to try and make them from time to time. thanks for watching Sonia Patreon link www.patreon.com/SoniaBrittain

Arrtx Artist Soft Oil Pastel Review
มุมมอง 5782 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a gifted product from #arrtx . I received the 48 set of soft oil pastels and a set of 10 white oil pastels. In this video I show them swatched out and discuss how I have found using them in comparison to 2 other brands. There is a process video where I make an abstract drawing and a loose floral sketch using them. I have tried my best to give my honest opinion of them at this time. Than...
New term - starting a new daily drawing project & a look at recent work
มุมมอง 8412 หลายเดือนก่อน
A look at some recent work, sketches while away and a return to my abstract sketchbooks. Feeling inspired to start a new daily drawing project with the idea of weekly themes/subjects. I'm feeling that back to school vibe and hoping to get back to a more consistent art practice - fingers crossed, thanks for watching, Sonia

Loose Mixed Media Landscape Sketchbook Process
Loved this!❤😊 thanks for sharing. I also find it much easier to go loose in altered books. Great fun and you learn a lot.
It is a really fun way to work! allowed me to experiment more
I love this so much! You totally transformed that sketch into something way cooler.
thank you !!
I always enjoy the colours you use, i think to myself oh I wouldn’t have thought of putting those colours together , but your colours look really great together, i love the deep crimson with the purple.
Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoy the colour combinations! I'm not sure I knew where this one was going when I started out with it
I love the distorted look! 😊 The colors remind me of the artist Edvard Munch. Especially the painting of The Scream. Thanks for those cool ideas Sonia.
I starteds to think that as I got more into it- I really like the atmosphere that developed here!
I finally had a chance to watch this. I love the way your heads turn out and I'm terrible at drawing faces. The different colors make the drawings so much more interesting -- I'm going to give this a try.
Thank you so much! Glad it inspired you!
Loved this! So pleasant to just look at the art and listen to the rustling paper! 😍😍
thanks personally I love the sound that paper makes when i turn the pages,
This was so refreshing just getting to enjoy the art and sound of pages turning 🙂 no annoying repetitive music going in back like lots of people seem to do. Totally enjoyed this.
100% agree. I can't stand background music and small talk. I love quiet spaces. The paper sounds were enough.
@@rachelleandrichard the worst is when they're talking with the music on. I want to hear what's being said but can't stand the "noise" so just turn it to something else.
Thank you, I’m glad you found it relaxing to watch!
My fave is the floral vase at about 14:07
cheers!
Loving those little faces at about 15:23 !!
thank you !
Hi Sonia! Great sketchbook tour once more ❤ Could you walk trough the mixed media layers maybe per drawing a bit more? Thanks 🙏
I will try! there are definitely a lot of layers in this one- watered down acrylics and acrylic ink worked well on these pages- I like to let some of the drawings come through
@@soniabrittain thanks 🙏 I got some issues with neo color 2 crayons as they are too fatty to draw on top of. They also react with water based mediums… if you have some tech tips for layering in a next video and feel like talking about it or show some of your favorite ways to work with these Neo col.2’s… that would be fab 🤩👍
I really like your portrait. For me they are perfect. The colors choices, the style, the fact that you cover them up with other portrait. I feel it’s your best work ❤
thank you I appreciate it as this is a special sketchbook for me- I haven't altered a sketchbook that I put so much work into like this before but I feel I have found some more interesting ways of pushing figurative art to make it interesting to me again.
I don’t see your drawings as wrong I see them as interesting, lets face it if we want a good shot we take a photograph don’t we, I love the way they are, remedy the eyes by painting your eyes first, then if you hate them you can start again. Can’t imagine you would hate them because all your self portraits are really great. Thanks Sonia.
Really appreciate it - I do love how the drawings have evolved over time.
Love your portraits!! 💕
Thanks, they are a lot of fun to do!
I love the idea of having a sketchbook just for abstract. I’m gonna start one! New subscriber
That’s great! hope you enjoy them
Wow! I absolutely love love love your portraiture work!! It’s so loose and fun and experimental, love everything about it, especially your self portraits! That first one with the yellow background, is everything!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this sketchbook tour with us!
Thank you! I fins it hard sometimes to talk about my work, by this point some of my themes are repetitive but I do feel I found some new ways of working in this sketchbook and it will inspire further work
What a fabulous sketchbook tour! I love your layering process with drawings layered over drawings, and drawing over paint. I’m feeling very inspired! Thanks for sharing!
I’m so glad you found it inspiring - I love layering , one of the reasons I'm really into mixed media
So happy to see your sketchbook tour today. I love them so much. You make art so much fun. I have not done any artwork in about a month. We moved down the road and it has been keeping me busy. I need to do something even if it is a scribble or whatever. Thank you for inspiring me Sonia. ❤😊
You’re welcome! Glad to hear it's a motivator to get back into making art! Moving is stressful - and can imagine it is hard to find time while you sort stuff out. Hope you get settled in soon!
Lovely portraits! I’ve done what you did, sticking my daughter’s drawings in my sketchbook. I came across one recently where she had drawn our family and made her older brother look like a massive balloon with huge cheeks sticking out each side. It was an ongoing joke between them at the time! So funny how it brought back memories!😂
Thank you !It is lovely to look back in your sketchbooks and see their work too!
Really love your figurative drawing!!! So inspiring!!
Thank you so much 😀
I must go to the op shop and get a book to paint in, I love the way you have used that book as a sketch book.
do give it ago - my first attempts were horrible but I learnt what paper worked for me and mediums that i also enjoy using in this way- it is a good way of experimenting , and some of the techniques i now also do in blank sketchbooks
Lovely, as usual. I always look forward to your videos!
thank you - appreciate it
Wonderfully vibrant work. The spread with the drawing of your boys is gorgeous.
thank you!!
It's really enjoyable looking through your sketchbooks! 💜💙🤎🧡❤
Thank you so much 😀 poorly kid, husband working away, its been harder to make time for videos to be honest.
إبداعك يشجع على الإبداع عمل جميل👏
thanks! 😀
Wonderful, as usual…I am very partial to your florals!!😍
Thank you! Cheers!
you are my top inspiration rn 🩷 I love your style so much!
Wow, thank you! really appreciate it - sometimes feel its my motivation to make content that fluctuates more than the art making! but knowing there is inspiration for others in my videos is a big motivation
Gansai Tambi+Sonia=❤
thank you!
You made such a lovely piece! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I’m so interested in these watercolours but I need mixing space… I’m thinking of setting them in a tin…
oh interesting - that makes a lot of sense , let me know if it works well- i love that idea
Another great video Sonia, thanks for sharing your process! You’ve mentioned other YT artists that you like to watch and podcasts you enjoy, could you share some of them with us? As you are inspirational to me, I am interested in who inspires you 👩🏼🎨
Hi , problem is a lot seem to stop, understandably - feel like i'm listening to a lot of psychology and book podcasts at the moment , but I do love Gaynor Pattle and Helen Wells :)
Love your dress! So beautiful. Those paints look wonderful. Love the neons and metallics also. 😊
thank you!! I love the neons especially
Wonderful video and review. I wish you would teach a class on loose florals and/or landscapes. Have a good evening 😊
Hey thank you , I did one a while ago I for the local art nonprofit, but I might do a new session for Patreon and sell it individually in my Patreon shop . Cheers !
That would be so awesome 🎉
Kissho brand doesn't list the English color names on the back of the pan like Kuretake does? Unlike Kuretake, Kissho has a separate set of their Lumi (neon) colors which I'm tempted to buy. Have you tried the Neon colors in your set yet?
Yes , they are very nice !!!! I think I got a Mozart neon set too which are good - I love neons - had no idea about names on back of pans , thanks , just checked - still in Japanese but with a number of, maybe I could find out on a site- saying that I kind of like grabbing colours haphazardly :)
Thank you for the review. I have the older, I guess it's kuretake set. I like the new one. Very pretty colors.
Thank you !!! Yes - the colours are so pretty and I love just getting in there , not mixing sometimes
They look gorgeous and I love your paintings with them! Sadly your Amazon link tells me they don’t deliver to the UK.😕 I wonder if the Kuretake ones are as good? x
Sorry to hear that - so I got the kuretake first and they are great !!! Also if not sure check out Mozart 40 colors- here they are $20 and fine for playing around
They’re on Amazon UK - £107 though :(
And the sheen of the metalic is very yummy!
Oh my gosh - yes , I get satisfaction turning the page and the lovely glimmer !!!
Besides everything else I luuuurve your dress!!! 😍
Thank you , got it second hand at charity shop , boy it’s been hot here !!!
this is a fantastic video! love your vases and vessels, and the 'imaginary landscape' you painted is so wonderful. you got an amazing sky so quickly! yours is the first review of gansai paints that made me seriously consider getting some. and i agree... i don't mind buckling and/or unexpected results at all! it's what i love about all water media. :)
Thanks - I really struggled with these at first till I learnt to loosen up and just play with them my way , I think Mozart does a very reasonably priced set 40 colors around $20 , I still use those - also can sometimes get good offers on a smaller kuretake set , but now I know I like them really enjoying a larger set -
Hi, enjoyed this review. Have such a huge quantity of acrylic, bought when couldn’t lay all my stuff out and see wot I had, that I feel reluctant to buy at moment. If I was to buy more think I might go for gouache for vibrancy and opacity. Do you know of a good set. I love your bright colours so much. I live in uk and it is grey and muddy enuf here. But of course you remember that well. Best r
Thanks for sharing!- don’t tempt me with acrylics , trying to use up my old supplies of that. I love gouache definitely my favorite paint overall, I got into it via winsor and newton designer gouache , which used to be reasonably priced and great quality in uk , here I found some Holbein on offer also gouache. Got some Arteza as cheaper and thus more comfortable using in loose sketchbook work and for covering large areas. Also like turner acrylic gouache - get both the acrylic and gouache quality, occasionally you can find really good deals on this on Amazon but it has gone back up a lot again ! Happy painting
It was a nice watch and listen. Thank you for sharing. 🌟
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love those gouache sketches! Could you share a video painting one? They are absolutely lovely… I don’t know why I keep being so afraid of my gouache
Thank you - best to just launch in , I think there may be a process video a while ago showing my gouache landscape process, somewhere in my video library!!! to be honest wasn’t sure how much interest there was in process videos here and have been keeping them more for my Patreon content.
Amazing portrait Sonia! It reminds me a little of an artist I loved when I was younger, the Welsh artist Shani Rhys James, maybe it’s way you’ve applied the paint, it’s fantastic! x
Thank you! Cheers! I know that artist - I think I watched a documentary about her years ago , love her work , I too like a red background
Just brilliant Sonia. Your use of colour is fabulous and so inspiring.
Thank you so much!!!
Love the portrait of yourself. Love all the colors. Thanks for giving us an update on your week. ❤😊
Thanks so much! 😊- I’m like struggling at times to remember what I made when 😂
I’ve been watching you for a while now and I really want to thank you so much 🙏 for being so open showing all your work - it has all really inspired me to loosen up and just have fun with my art - I LOVE you oil pastel portrait today - hardly ever see oil pastel being done and I’d really like to see more 😊
You are so welcome- hoping by probably oversharing on art , can show I have a lot of hits and a lot misses too !!! You just never know what you might end up with - definitely feel I’m starting to see the benefit of putting the time in , in terms of getting to know my own tastes and what processes I enjoy
loving all the color !!
Thank you 🙏
Love your portraits, love your landscapes and love your abstracts ❤
Thank you - yep I did it all as per usual 😂
Gotta get back to my sketch books!
Yay - sketchbooks really suit me when schedules are chaotic
LOved the palm springs slope with the rock and the silvery shrubs. Stunning sense of colour and design thruout the abstracts. Best R
Thank you - I really like that Palm Springs one, it is definitely one of my better gouache landscapes of late, had a lot of fun last week with regards to art !
Love. That one too.
