I have the same 2017 X1, and frustrated with a dead fob. After changed the battery, it is still not working. The Canadian dealer said it will cost $515 to get a new key plus another $200 something to get it programed. But suggest to have them test the dead fob for a fee of $200 plus to see if the fob is really dead. If it is dead then change the key fob and program it. My next car will not be this brand for sure.

Why BMW has chosen this location for the battery? Ok, I can understand that 50% / 50% weight distribution is no longer important for them but I cannot accept all this work to replace this component. Non sense.

Good guide! More work room is possible by removing the cowl. Held in with 2 plastic rivets at ends of the sway bar.

Our 2017 X1 repeatedly does this, but there's virtually no time (<1minute) between first warning and a totally dead fob, even after the battery has been replaced properly. On our first visit to the dealer about this (right near the end of warranty) it took two trips and a lot of time to get the fob completely replaced (with the dealer saying it would've been $450 outside warranty). The secret is to remove the old battery, short the positive and negative contacts on the fob (using a wire or the end of the emergency key) so that the processor sees zero volts. Insert new battery and it'll work. Without reducing the imposed voltage to zero, the fob stays in an unknown condition with the new battery in and nothing works! Knowing that it'll cost $450+ is an incentive to go the extra mile and ensure a full reset on the fob 🙂
