Tips and tricks with micro rc cars such as Kyosho Mini-Z, GL Racing and Carisma.
Modded Carisma GT24 is Fast and Controlled
I don't always go outdoors for RC action, but today I put a buggy in my backpack and headed over to Central Park. The weather and temperature were absolutely perfect on this Sunday. The park was packed! The challenge became finding a spot to put the RC car down where I wouldn't bother other people.
The buggy I brought was the Carisma GT24TR with buggy wheels. Finally I found a quiet spot with a good surface. The GT24 chassis has all the design elements needed for solid performance, and yet it's simple enough to be robust. With the stock Carisma 8000kv motor, powered by 2S lipo and a GL 1.2 ESC, this modded GT24 is zippy.
On this asphalt surface, the grip with the Carisma pin tires was spot on. I always recommend these tires for basically all conditions (CIS15639). Overall, the handling will exceed most people's expectation of an 1:24 buggy.
I did run into an issue though but it's entirely my fault... Because the grip was quite strong, sometimes when I pulled a hard turn, the tires would come undone on the rims. Here we can see the right front tire coming off. I should've glued the tires onto the rims. Near the end of the run, I recorded some slow motion videos to see the suspension in action. A couple of friendly people stopped to check out the RC.
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!

Brushless Conversion for Orlandoo Hunter Trophy Truck (OH32X02)
มุมมอง 3.4K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sorry it's been a while since the last video! Today let's do a brushless conversion for the Orlandoo Hunter Trophy Truck. I built this OH32X02 a year ago, and it was an epic build. I used standard electronics suggested by the manufacturer. Let's change out the N30 brushed motor to this brushless motor. Along with it I will use this DasMikro DSK-170 AFHDS3 18A brushless ESC combo board. The Orla...
The Score and Snap method (Protoform P63 1:28 Lexan Body)

This is my GLR-RT with my Reflex Racing parts. It's been paired with a Jomurema body, but it's time for something different. This is the Protoform P63 lexan body, a popular one for 1:10 cars and last year they started producing an 1:28 one too. A while back I prepared my first lexan body. I learned a lot but the outcome wasn't as clean as I'd like. It's never going to be easy but let's do bette...
Mini-Z MA-020 DWS Compatible with CS in 90mm or 94mm Wheelbase
มุมมอง 9896 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here is a Mini-Z AWD MA-020 chassis, using the DWS rear end at 98mm and wide front track width setup. This DWS system, or double wishbone (MDW100), includes parts to do 90mm or 94mm. Let's try it. This requires a light reassembly, but shouldn't take long at all. The longer 98mm setup uses this larger frame. With less room to work with, the 90/94mm frame is much simpler. I'm also reverting the c...
Carbon Fiber Mini-Z Buggy Outdoor Bash + Slow Motion
มุมมอง 1.8K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
I tend to work on my RC cars more than I drive them. Let's definitely drive one today. Here we have the carbon fiber Mini-Z Buggy that has been the subject of several recent videos. Most notably, I upgraded the power system with the faster 5500kv motor, while dropping the gear ratio a little bit. Now it should be more than fast enough. In fact I must concentrate much more when driving it. Tract...
Hobbywing Ezrun Mini28 30A 1:28 ESC Review on RX28 Chassis
มุมมอง 4.8K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today's we will install the Hobbywing Ezrun Mini28, a popular micro ESC used in many 1:28 and 1:24 applications. Currently on my Reflex RX28K, it's got the GL sensored ESC. It's not bad but the throttle curve doesn't feel linear enough to me, and the reverse delay is long. I picked up the Hobbywing Mini28 a while back. Physically it's even smaller. It's great, but not perfect. Let's find out. T...
Mini-Z Buggy Carbon Fiber Chassis V2 - What are the Changes?

Recently I've been playing with this carbon fiber converted Mini-Z buggy. There's so much going on in such a small form factor. I was quite happy with the build, until Sai Lai, the creator of the chassis, contacted me with some new information. He was sending me this updated version of the chassis (thanks!). Let's see what's different about this. First, the bottom plate doesn't have holes anymo...
Carbon Fiber vs Plastic Mini-Z Buggy MB-010 Outdoor Test Drives
มุมมอง 5K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have two Mini-Z buggies. The red one is the AAA-powered brushless MB-010VE 2.0 with a bunch of aluminum upgrades. It's so easy to pop in AAA NiMH batteries and start driving. While it's not sealed against sand or small debris, for a car the size of of hand, it's very fast with amazing handling. This other buggy here is only partially an MB-010. The previous two videos featured this Sai Lai's ...

So this took more time than I anticipated, but the special Mini-Z Buggy build is done, and it's glorious. In this video, I will be documenting the full build process of this Sai Lai CFV and calling out some areas that needed attentions. It was not the easiest build, but with enough time it all came together in a satisfying manner. Let's get the build going. CFV stands for Carbon Fiber Version, ...
Custom Mini-Z Buggy using buggy parts, carbon fiber chassis, and standard electronics [Part 1/2]

This is my Mini-Z Buggy (MB-010VE 2.0). If you've been on this channel for a while, you know I'm a big fan of this 1:24 RC. It drives pretty nicely in my apartment. The few times I drove it in larger areas, it was crazy fast. Over time it's gotten many alloy upgrade parts, such as the big bore shocks, shock towers, knuckles, hubs, CVD swing shafts, etc. What happened to all the stock parts repl...
Modding Mini-Z MR-03 Ball Differential (More and Faster Gear Ratios)

This is the GL spur gear displaced from the previous video. I have a plan for it. This is my MR-03EVO chassis with a bunch of R246 parts, including the blue Kyosho Ball Differential. This is also a good diff. However, it uses 0.5 mod gear which is the standard Mini-Z spec, but all third party diffs use 64p gears. Let's convert it to 64p too. This Kyosho diff is constructed with alloy parts (lik...
PN Racing Yellow 53T Spur Gear Works on GL Racing Ball Differential (MR2953WC)

This is my GL Racing GLR-GT. It's gotten quite a number of modifications and it's a great track car. The rear ball differential, one of the most important components, is the stock one built from the kit. It's a good diff. The quality of construction is good with little play. The pressure plates are flat, and the differential action is very smooth. Let's improve it further with this PN Racing 53...
Kyosho Mini-Z RWD MR-03 MR-03EVO Full Review (a very late review)
มุมมอง 8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
MR-03 is the staple RWD platform in the Mini-Z series, designed and marketed to be the entry level race chassis on RCP and carpet tracks. It's fun out of the box and if you want to mod it, there are a ton of upgrade paths. More on that later. In terms of architecture, MR-03 is a classic and clean pan car design. The rear motor pod houses the motor and rear axle, and the whole thing is suspended...
Adding Grease to Tune a Mini-Z MA-020 Differential

Today let's do something quick with this stock Mini-Z MA-020 gear differential. This is the unassuming diff found in all Mini-Z AWD, FWD and buggies. It works quite well actually. It's a completely "open" differential. Let's add some grease to slow down the diff action. To get to the spider gears inside, partially disassemble the diff. It's not necessary to pull out the diff cup on the right si...
Expensive DWS Double Wishbone Suspension Upgrade for Mini-Z MA-020/MA-030EVO (MDW100)

My Mini-Z MA-020 has been getting a lot of play time. Last time we extended the car to wide and 98mm. Today I'm going to install the DWS conversion which changes the rear suspension to a double wishbone setup. Why do this? Let's first check how the stock suspension works. The front uses single wishbones with kingpins. It's pretty smooth. The back side is a different story. It uses a basic slidi...

Hi helpme pls
I just took mine apart because my steering wasn’t aligning turned out to be the little sensor on the front of the servo giving the unit the wrong position. Not surprised i race hard and crash harder.
Do you need to change all the MA020 bearings to make the car run smoothly?
lol you have the best videos Sammy, very helpful
Mine is front one way and rear open diff, 27t kyosho’s, same wheel base yellow Hawkeye Impreza body I tried my best to make it like Ken Block’s I think you might like it try the setup
Dang I need one of these modded too.
This was great to watch Sammy. I have been looking at these because they are so realistic looking, but I keep getting great deals on other 1/24th scale cars. One of these days I will have to get one and make it brushless. I'm happy to see that you are still up and about doing this kind of stuff.
almost bought the MR03 kuz its on 55% sales. now idk if i want it or not.
I have 10v and 40 watt is that okej?
40 watt is plenty. As long as the charger sees 10v or more, it will allow charging to start.
can you give me info the chassis price? I already contacted sai but not yet give any response
It was around $80 when I purchased the v1 a while back. The facebook link in the description is the best way to reach Sai.
Thinking of using 14t . Read that some people wished for a 1.25 cs.. ratio…
A smaller ratio will be easier to drift for sure. At the time, I didn't have a smaller gear with 0.5 MOD pitch so I went with the 15T.
Oh yaa
Great video. I wanna get the r33 skyline. Have you ever drifted an ldrc drift car with an upgraded gyro? I wonder how it compares to the mini z.
I haven't tried those yet; only seen youtube videos about them. RWD drift is quite a different animal vs awd, so in many ways more fun and challenging than Mini-Z. MA-020 is more manageable, but I also encourage everyone who's into drifting to try RWD at least once. I've used my GLD (1:28 rwd drift) a lot, and I have a couple of chassis that I haven't built yet.
Hi. Do you have the buggy powered on while changing settings ? Thanks.
I don't remember exactly, but I don't think it was powered on.
@@sammybaka It ended up in my case. The buggy needs to be powered on otherwise the PC doesn't see it.
Hi there, I have a dead lipo but cant figure how to recover it with this charger... because if I swich to NIMH mode and I plug my lipo he somehow sees that the battery is a lipo and prevents me from charging.... any advice ?
That's interesting. Unfortunately I don't have information on how to do this. The only time I recovered an under volted lipo was with another charger.
If you want real ae86 rwd drift upgrade lock the front diff and take off the connector on swing shafts to it. Open diff rear w gyro and mess w suspension. You got a no angle rwd drift tofu. Check out my shorts it’ll run like that w tofu body characteristics
i just got mine back also set up on the MA-020 CHASSIS. I can't seem to get the lights to work.. it does go around the track and looks great. Thanks!
I think the led wiring on the "my first mini-z" is different. I remember someone posted a wiring diagram to make it work. I've never tried myself.
@@sammybaka thanks Man... I can do without. if i decide i need the lights i'll just buy another model they're cheap.
hi! great comparison, i’ve got a question: although i’m aware 4wd 1/28 isn’t as popular, what do you think of the bz5 and the sz2? i love the acceleration and traction of 4wd so is that most of the difference between standard 2wd? if you’ve seen or tried one i’d love to hear what you think of it
In the competition scene, the AWD class gets a lot of action and you are right that it's mostly BZ5 and SZ2, and I guess the new RTRC AWD belt car as well. I'd love to try those cars out but I don't have experience with them. In fact, I also have never put an AWD car on a track. From what I've read though, AWD cars take a different race line vs RWD; they enter and exit corners differently from RWD.
Need more grip on the rear tires
Just had one built , I’ll see how it does against the gtrs at the local track
Have fun! Please let me know how it goes.
Hi Hi when I buy the mini z Drift rwd in the KYOSHO brand, do i have to buy a gyroscope? Is it included? Or i don’t need it ?
I'm not aware of kyosho making a mini-z rwd drift. Their main drift option is the awd ma-020. Which one are you referring to?
@ never mind I thought that kyosho sell drift mini z but I re checked and in fact no… 😅😅 sorry
Do you still run this car and how does it compare against newer models? I’m having one built and want to also run a lexan body
Hi -- I haven't been to a track for a while, but previously I drove the GLR enough to be able to compare the experience vs a Reflex RX-28K and a GLR-GT with reflex parts. Regardless of the chassis, lexan is going to be a lot more agile vs a hard body. In general I feel the most consistent and relaxed with the GLR-GT, but the GLR comes pretty close too. I never got as smooth with the RX-28 myself, but it's probably just due to my lack of practice. By now though, GLR is pretty old so the community and part support is less common now.
Just had a glr built with some upgrades we wil see how it does against todays newer cars soon enough, wil be running it with a hard body and a 3500 motor
What are those quick disconnect motor wires? Having trouble finding something similar, thx
Search for them using "2mm bullet connectors"
where you get that GL esc?
I got a couple of GL ESCs from GL kits I got, and another Atomic (basically the same) separately. It's a bit older now but you can still find them at places like www.wolframrc.com/product/glf-1-glr-gt-esc-gsc-v1-2-gl-racing/2358
Great video👍👍can this car go straight without drifting?? Thx
Yes. On these drift tires though there's not much grip so it's not easy to go fast and straight.
Id be goin crazy with all those bodies! And also completely bankrupt😂
It required discipline I didn't know I had! It was a great place.
tried this with both a 1 and 2 deg camber knuckle as well as a few different toe angle setups. My car is now unusable and just spins out constantly anwhere past 1/4 throttle. On top of that, this mod is not one that you can come back from without a new rigid axle ring gear and a set of pinion/spur gear set. It may be my tires, but the car is totally unusable at this point. Waiting on new gears/axle to restore it back to how it was before. Be warned this mod may not be for everyone
Hi -- this is too bad. I have some ideas to test out. If you use a gyro, could you check if it's on the right direction? (i.e: the gyro board faces down). Do you have a smooth front one-way diff? Make sure none of the wheels is too tight with the lock nuts.
@sammybaka I do have a gyro and it's on correctly, but will test the other ideas
This is a beautiful truck!!! You set it up well!!
Thank you! It's really funny to see a truck like this running fast!
@@sammybaka I ordered 2 of them- the blue one and the white one.. I just hope i can set it up properly.
@@sammybaka i just dropped off the blue and the white at the LHS today. I had to go with the AWD Chassis I'll have them back by the end of the week.I don't know how fast they will go. I think it's just the standard AWD chassis.
This is just so Sato San can deliver his melons to market.
What top carbon brace is that? Nice build btw
Thanks. Above the battery is the standard GLR carbon piece. In the front, it's using the GLR triangular front brace (GLR-009)
Thanks for the review. I did not know these run off AA's and no diff.. which is fine. Does this bind to a Noble NB4+?
Thank you. The electronics is very much toy-grade on this. It doesn't work with NB4; it's its own protocol.
i just purchased the Same Noble..have you heard of any SW or HW glitches? I haven't had the chance to use it yet. I was in the shop today and a few guys were grumbling
@@gewglesux Glitches in what kind of situation? I haven't had any issue with it so far. I've raced together with 5 or 6 other racers simultaneously.
@@sammybaka Thanks for the reply. i was hearing was something about SW issues with the radio. I really wished i paid more attention. I'm glad that i didn't waste $500
@@gewglesux For me, absolutely no issue running ReadySet (white antenna) Mini-Z's and MR03 EVO. 👍
Have you modded gt24tr for a 2s lipo battery? Thx!
Mine has always run on 2s lipo.
@@sammybaka ok :-), Thx!
Do you think aftermarket Tamiya 130 motors would work on this chassis?
Like the mini 4wd motors? They will physically fit but many of them will likely burnout because they are not designed for 6v.
@@sammybaka ahh I see I know for sure they worked on the First Mini Z series. I tried fitting the Light Dash on one and it worked
What controller did you use?
I'm using a flysky nb4
Where do you got the front bumper ?
It's from MB003B. The bumper is used by Optima.
When servicing or doing a maintenance check on an mr03 ball diff, what ball diff grease would you recommend?
I've been using some MST ball diff grease, but any ball diff grease would do. Ball diff grease is thick and sticky to help with contact adhesion between the balls and diff plates.
@@sammybaka thatnk you very much, was a bit worried when looking at the options for ball diff grease as it might be too thick.
I need the details on that esc as i ordered one and cannot find any instructions lol. P.s im running the hotracing losi mini shocks on my gt24rs no towers just spacers
How are those shocks? This ESC has the same programming as hobbywing ezrun 18a. It uses the same program table, program card, and button operations.
what part number for this body?? and is your setup wide or narrow ?
This is the MZP243BL. The ma020 in this photo has a wide front and 98mm wheel base. Rear is the regular narrow width.
Went to look for receiver and esc and they’re sold out ?
Yeah that's possible. You can try another seller like www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803447291239.html
What car is this?
That's a GL Racing GLR
I bought one to run in the house. Now I’ve put anodized frame rails and shocks , light kits and a lot of brass Parts and linkages. Need some over size tires. It never ends.
It'd be really cool if the new Losi Micro-B oil shocks would fit or could be made to fit for more configuration options.
I might end up picking up the Losi. If I do I can check out if the shocks can work here. Coincidentally, my GT24 uses Losi shocks (and aftermarket shock towers), but from the old 1/24 SCT.
@@sammybaka Yep, heard those were an option, but since they're out of production, it'd be nice if a now available set will work. Though based upon pricing, the oil filled Carisma shocks might be a better buy.
I kept hearing that the carisma shocks are leaky though. They look nice and the price is attractive otherwise. These old Losi shocks I use appear on eBay sometimes. The custom 3d printed shock towers by Matsucars might be harder to find at this point.
What receiver and transmitter are you using
I use the Flysky NB4 transmitter. The receiver used here is a DasMikro afhds3 micro receiver.
@@sammybaka I’m using the mini28 ESC and flysky GMR receiver and have not had any success getting the receiver to go into bind mode.
@@MultiAp101 i have that receiver too. what did you try to put it in bind mode?
@@sammybaka hold the bind button on the receiver and turn on the ESC. once the esc is on and the receiver starts flashing release the bind button. The receiver should continue to flash showing it in bind mode. Mine does not do this, once I release the bind button it stops flashing. For some reason it will not go into bind mode. I’ve tried 3 of the same GMR receivers and they all do the same thing. My ESC has not been calibrated as it takes the controller/transmitter to do so but I cannot bind it to do so.
That's odd, especially with 3. I don't have any solid suggestions here. Make sure the surface you are working on is not conductive. Maybe try a different esc? Maybe try to bind anyway. With the GMR, nb4 needs to bind in enhanced receiver mode.
Hey, great build! Is the front body mount on top of the front bumper a custom-made part?
Thank you. The whole bumper is part of the reflex bumper made specifically to fit the jomurema hard body.
Magnifique j’en veux un !
Nice video! Can we get links in the description to all the parts and which radio you use?
It's best to shop between sites for parts availability and prices. I like to get a bunch of stuff at the same time from banzaihobby.com, but I've also purchased things on amainhobbies, wolframrc.com, helidirect.com, etc. DS Racing LF-1 (20mm inner diameter) MDW017: front one way diff MDW024: rigid axle diff GLR-003-S: GLR front spring set AWD-10/3: 3Racing metal CVDs The exact model of gyro to get depends on the revision of the ma-020 mainboard (green vs blue board). Mine is the older green board and uses the MZW431 gyro.
The gearbox doesn't stip out because ive had that happen to the ones ive gotten in the past
May I ask you what kind of wheels and tyres are those?
These are the kyosho plastic rims and they are narrow and +0 offset. Reference number is MDH100W-N0.
What is your rear wheel offset
0 offset for the 14mm rear. If i run 11mm wide wherls, I'd use 3mm offset rims.
@@sammybaka what are you running in front
@@MultiAp101 In this video, I'm running PN KS soft low-profile slick 11mm tires, but normally I run standard 8.5mm tires, PN KS medium low-profile slick (KS1038).
@@sammybaka I’m sorry but I meant what wheel offset for your front.
@@MultiAp101 +2 usually but sometimes +1 too.
Hi Sammy, thanks for these vids, helps me a lot. Do you know if there is an easy instruction how to convert the readsyet version to brushless? I already have the brushless system but I did not know you have to solder some wires to make it work? that sucks if you can't solder.🤣
Thank you! Assuming you are referring to upgrading a brushed mb-010 to a brushless mb-010 with the same chassis (i.e: not this carbon chassis), then Kyosho sells a brushless electronics kit that makes it easy, but it is expensive. Look for MBW2019B. No soldering required.
@@sammybaka i have the the mbw2019C wich looks the same is this esc also easy to install without soldering?
Actually my bad, it seems like you will need to solder the two power wires to the battery terminals. Also, be careful when disconnecting and connecting the flat cable between the two boards; I once broke a solder joint there.
