Videos of our fishing adventures, client trips, and tips/info.
This channel is dedicated to fishing-related content with Bloemendaal Guide Service and our own personal fishing adventures. We mostly fish for walleye on Lake Sakakawea - where the guide service is based - but we'll catch other species and fish other waters now and again. Videos aim to be both entertaining and educational. There is also a playlist dedicated to books based on Brett Bloemendaal's author endeavors. If you want to connect with us everywhere we exist, here's a universal link: linktr.ee/BloemendaalFishing.

My Experience Implementing Forward Facing Sonar (MEGA Live)
I finally installed a forward-facing sonar unit (a used MEGA Live). I filmed everything from initial install, testing, settings, hiccups, and my first fish catches (walleye and others on Lake Sakakawea). If you want to know what to expect when you get your first system, this should help.

And there goes your soul, sold to livescope, congrats on disappointing your grandpa
Did you add the weight of the trailer to the boat when you did your weight calculations? Also any gear inside the boat when you were towing? Thanks.
Glad you got it together! FFS is a lot of fun, definitely can lose yourself in it!
The bird mega live is so far behind Garmin, I do run 4 birds on my boat , FFS is Garmin
I do agree. If I had the money and didn’t get a good deal on this used one, I’d get Garmin.
Wow, that was crazy informative for setup and troubleshooting. That contrast/sensitivity stuff is super important. Nice video!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video. Thanks for putting it all together and showing us the entire start to finish process.
Well thank you for watching!
If you put the other units on standby while you're using the mega live, the sonar wave you're getting will go away
I figured it would, but I don't really want to do that...I like using both!
I get it, but just to let you know if you hit any button on the standby unit, it comes right back on. So it's easy enough to put on standby and take off. Just FYI
I’m aware. I suppose that’s probably just fine when I’m spotlighted using the live scope, but I could quickly turn it back on to do some scanning if I start trolling again.
I was surprised as a youtuber and guide that you didn't have this before.
$$$...I don't got much!
One thing I’ve learned is keep your distance at a constant and depth somewhat constant you will learn what size and species fish your looking at A lot faster great videos!!
Yeah, that definitely makes sense, especially for the down mode
Ffs is amazing. You learn a ton about how fish react and it makes your outings way more efficient. Find myself doing a lot less dragging and more sharp shooting specific schools of fish with it. One tip that helped me a lot was the shorter the distance forward you set on the screen the easier it is to see fish on the screen because the marks are bigger. Same with depth. Set depth just a few feet below bottom.
Yeah, I’ve been setting my range a little longer just to see more stuff inside of that stupid sonar wave interference that I get, but if I can figure out how to fix that, I definitely want to set a shorter range!
I’ve been contemplating one myself. Necessary for targeting big fish in a tournament but not so much for just finding and catching fish. I’m going to hold out for now.
I definitely don’t think it’s necessary for just catching fish, it just might make it more entertaining if you like that style. Although if you are on a spot locked, casting bite, it helps to keep tabs on fish around the boat.
Glad you got the issue resolved. 90 percent of the time it works every time. It would have sucked to watch the remainder of this video with it sideways/skewed. :)
No kidding! I was starting to wonder if I was ever gonna finish this video when that problem came up!
I hope you have better luck with the yak mounts than I did. They were cheap plastic and wobble bad. Then break.
Already tried...I agree. Can't run with them, but easier to take out and the extension arm is nice getting it up for viewing. I'm just setting it on the floor for now. Want to get a Stow-away mount, but I can't take out when I don't need it (guiding days), and it's expensive! Though I may have an idea to mount it on a track with some sort of quick release bracket. Still working it out.
Atta boy bloomy
I'm getting used to it. Next video is a step forward. Eventually graduate to identifying hogs :)
Hey Brett. Good video. Have you tried different colour pallets ? You will find some are better on the eyes than others and show detail better. Mega live is awesome. I have it also. I find contrast at 12 and sensitivity at 12 as well to work best for me. I use the blue back ground pallet, I think it’s 12 or 13? Not sure. I also had mine on a pole. But I bought the quest ultrex and I have it mounted on the trolling motor now. Much easier now ( for me anyways ) and less crap to set up using the pole etc. Well enjoy you mega live. Only other thing I could recommend, is getting a 12” unit for reading mega live. Yup the spending never stops now. lol. Enjoy bro.
Thanks, Brett! Lots of good ideas, but yeah, money! I'll see how the year goes and maybe retool some things next year. I've tried the other pallets some, mostly the green one, and so far I like orange, but I'll keep tinkering as always.
@@BloemendaalFishing That’s a good idea. Go slow , enjoy the mega live. It’s an awesome tool. 👍
Need time to digest :)
The video I been watching on different shows seems like casting to the fish is the best way to use FFS or do you think pulling spinners would work just as well
I think it’s biggest advantage is with casting, but I plan to try pointing it at my bottom bouncer to see when fish follow. Or you could point it ahead of your boat to steer towards fish before you get to them.
@@BloemendaalFishing When pulling spinners I was surprised how many fish would follow and not bite. Another thing was how many suspended fish would move down the water column to follow.
I’m sure I would see a ton of interesting things once I do it!
You’ve been through much of what I’ve found. If you have 2 open ports on your network, networking your ML will clean up your sonar interference. I extended my power cord and have a TKI mount on a lund track mount. Can move it anywhere in my boat and use any graph. At times the mask helps a ton. Don’t stick it on. Stick it to a piece of 3M no residue duct tape. Tape it over the ML window with a small piece of the duct tape. It’s stays on for weeks and is removable. You can also make a foam mask from a can coozy cut to size. If found the short mask and transducer at 50 degrees “5 clicks up” gives me best jig tracking. Good luck. Have fun
Thanks, Jack. I don’t currently have a network box and hoping I don’t have to buy one, but good to know it may help if I do.
Thanks, "make believe bestie", that was good.
Glad you like it!
this was very impressive, so you make about 4 dollars for every 1000 views, thats great tbh!
Yeah, thanks! It's not a ton, but it's not nothing by any means! Certainly worth continuing to do something I really enjoy doing anyway!
@@BloemendaalFishing for real man, and sometimes one video just takes off, so just keep posting good content i reckon :D
I agree!
Just went out with Brett today, and I had an awesome time. Thanks again Brett
Glad you enjoyed it!
My lund pro v has hydraulic steering...2019 225 proxs still on the original batteries..I use a small lithium for panoptics..
Yeah, the electric is a battery drainer hardcore!
Everyone should have a support on the gunnel for the trolling motor close to the head. for road travel and especially on the water..!!!
Couldn't agree more.
I look at that lake very week from the mountains in the back😊 the trout are bigger just saying 😅
I’m sure they are! Crappie ain’t interested. I wouldn’t have minded
Looks like an awesome day on the water! Thanks for turning the cameras on and bringing us along for the ride!
It was quite fun!
My grandfather in ND always said when cows up eating so are the fish, laying down not a day to go😮
Haha! I wonder how all these things get started!
What a banger! Wowza! That was fun for all right there!
It was a blast, my friend
I’ve got to get up to Sak one of these years.
I agree!
Thanks for the trip Brett! I had a great time and we found a few fish. I bought some green plastics.😉
Haha! Rock that green! Great time for me too.
I love the eye candy baits!! Best ever for drop shot and or Ned rigging. I do love the authentics plastic but they are one fish one bait.
Yeah, these are my favorite now easily
You guys on Devils Lake?
No sir, Sakakawea.
Do you have any problems reading depth at hi speed with step transom? I do with my Lund Tyee 189 GL
Rarely...it does lose depth on occasion, but I'd say 98% of the time it's not a problem.
You need a clothing sponsor. Give Simms or Blackfish a call.
Be cool if they went for it.
Show us how to Falley those Boogers, nice fish!
Not sure I could do much better without my guide that day.
Hi Brett. Can you help a fellow Brett out? I’m pretty green with jigging raps…when? (Time of year? Weather pattern) and where? (Depth, structure?) do I want to try them? Thanks!
The fall is best for me, but late summer and sometimes mid summer can be good too. I like them concentrated somewhere on a shelf, point or hump, but I’ve also done well with them casting shallow flats if there are enough around and they’re willing to take. Best place to start and learn, though, is probably vertical in 20-30 feet where you can stay on a school of fish.
Get the book on audible!
Probably should
Hey Dad…fyi my wife and I had a moose hang out with us at our campsite at Deepwater 3 years back!

Looks like a great time on the water. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Thanks for watching!
Good to see you guys out fishing together again! Blythe is always funny with his overconfident way of thinking/knowing he will catch the biggest fish...lol
Ha! Yeah, he's quite a character.
That was an excellent video with what you got and being preoccupied with visiting, fishing and life. I don't know how you did it. It was another perfect balance of narration, storytelling, video clips, and music. Very well put together family fishing memory.
Oh wow! Thanks, man. I really appreciate that. It is getting less awkward filming with family. I think...maybe ask them...
Are you using a swivel?
I just use a snap, no swivel. With braid not having memory and the heavy leader line preventing fouled hooks on the lure, I don't see a need for a swivel.
Another great video! Your Dad is a character! 😅 Nice! How are you liking the Kalin’s Landing net? Been looking for a net that doesn’t snag on crank bait hooks all the time and was hoping this might be the one.
He very much is! I really like the net, but I did break the thing right where the connection for the extender piece is. And then just shoved it back in and glued and taped it because I don’t really need to extend it all that much. It’s pretty flimsy when you extend it, but if you don’t extend it, it’s a perfect match of light and large.
Nothing better then making family memories
Agreed, sir!
nice video dutchmen😉greatings from the nederlands blijf vissen blijf video,s posten
Thanks!
great information, thank you
You’re welcome!
The boat is hitched up in the yard but when the time comes to go, its been windy and wet without enough time for that water to settle back out. Hot weather coming next week. Hopefully the middle part of the lake gets good, else its more bass fishing. These flooded bays this year are fun.
Flooded bays eh? For just bass or?
@@BloemendaalFishing Mostly smallmouth but occasional catfish, white bass, and pike. Its rare but Ive seen walleye in those backwaters too.
I’ve certainly seen it in the past, not as much this year yet
I like going in there with finesse baits, topwaters if calm enough and casting against all that cover, sometimes sight fishing. Even fly fishing it occasionally. Usually able to come out with a variety of nice fish.
Any problems landing the boat by yourself ? think of buying a 2023 left over fish myself quite a bit.
No sir
Lots of ways. At 70 been fishing them 40 years or so. I think the most important thing to do is get off the couch and experiment
That’s a helpful tip for sure
Do you ever fish shivers or hyper rattles?
I fish hyper rattles some. Not so much shivers.
@@BloemendaalFishing I fish all three and for whatever reason some days the walleyes one over the other. Walleyes are like women, IMPOSSIBLE to predict!!
Yeah, if I’m stuck in snap jigging, I try all sorts. Hasn’t had much luck with shivers in the past so just haven’t kept many around, but I know they work for other people.
I’ve had far better luck with Shiver minnows. Rippin’ em and letting them fall on slack line. I appreciate your insight and for you being open and sharing techniques. Thanks
