Half Cage vs Full Cage | Sony A7SIII
CAGE FIGHT! Kind of. I've found the SmallRig half cage for the Sony A7SIII suits my needs slightly better than the full cage does, in this video I discuss why I'm using it more than the full cage. The principals apply to cages for any mirrorless camera, not just Sony Alpha cameras. Hope you enjoy!

Testing out the DJI Air 2S over water by day and at nautical twilight
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Picked up the new DJI (Mavic) Air 2S to replace my Mavic Air 2, and wanted to put it through its paces at Bedruthan Steps and at Godrevy Lighthouse, at either end of the beautiful Cornish North Coast. The drone performed excellently! I'm really impressed with the improvement in low light performance this has over the previous model, and I'm looking forward to shooting more with it.
Becoming a better filmmaker: Sound Design | Deity S-Mic 2S | Sony FX6 | FCPX

I've just wrapped my first big project since lockdown one and it feels gooood. It also looks good. Like really good. What's more, it even SOUNDS good! So I made a video about how I'm improving and levelling up as a video making person, specifically in terms of how I use audio and sound design to make a project a more immersive and expressive finished piece. On-camera - the Sony FX6 - I use a De...
Walking and Hiking on DARTMOOR filming a commercial project with the Sony FX6 | BTS | VLOG 02

This week I went up to Dartmoor to film a project on the Sony FX6 for Classic. The cottage I stayed in was wonderful! Check it out here: www.classic.co.uk/holiday-cottage/desc-3254.html Filming went really well, mainly thanks to the talented Romina and Pete who were great to work with and great on camera. We hiked and walked and trekked and traipsed around the moors chasing the sunlight and dod...

Behind the BTS: jp.w / This week I was was drone operator on a music video filmed at the incredible Minack Theatre! My pal and youtube channel subscriber Greg Dennis asked if I was free to help shoot a live concert and music video for Nathan Ball at The Minack, and of course I said hell yes! I love The Minack, and as expected it was a real treat work with (for?) Greg and Nathan. I...
Gyro Stabilisation on the Sony FX6 | Test footage and review

BT BTS: jp.w / In this vid I shallow dive into the world of gyro stabilisation (stabilization?) on the Sony FX6 and shoot some test footage along the beach front in order to see what can be achieved by utilising the gyroscopic data recorded by the camera (which sadly, requires the use of Catalyst Browse...) The Sony FX6 is HARD to use compared to the Sony A7SIII | S-Cinetone
มุมมอง 3.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I muse on some of the growing pains I'm having as I move from the Sony A7SIII to my new Sony FX6. This is easily my longest video - I went script-free and let my thoughts roam, and it's as deep a dive as my shallow abilities permit! I used an Apurture MC as my key light and one as my colour wash behind me (they're really versatile little guys) and recorded this on my trusty Sony A7SIII (In S-Ci...
Sony FX6 first impressions | Moving to the the FX6 from the Sony A7SIII (& back again?) | S-Cinetone

In this vid I manage to persuade some friends to stage a couple of quick video shoots so I can have some authentic looking BTS footage of myself operating the Sony FX6. And it worked! I compare the FX6 to its counterpart (in my gear bag at least) the Sony A7SIII and reflect on how moving from from one camera to the other is going. Also, I updated the A7SIII to the latest firmware so when I reco...

In this video I experiment with thumbnail text and shoot in Sony's new S-Cinetone colour profile, neither of which I mention! Also, I probs should have told the rescue story on camera, but I couldn't work out an appropriate segue to do so (it was getting late) so the text-overlay version will have to do. It was exciting though! Like I say in the video, there's no need to steal music for your wo...

    I had the exact same experience with my fx6, bought it this year thought it would be easy coming from A7s III but it was completely different, couldn't even grade it properly in FCPX because bloody software wasn't reading it as S-Log3...I have spent like 2 days non-stop just to get familiar with it, it made watch 2-hours livestream videos of some old guy explaining how use every bottom and every feature instead of 5-10 min videos that I am used to watch for A7s III

    im late to the party, but i love this video! having recently upgraded to the FX6 from the A7S, i feel a lot of this. i am truly loving the FX6 though. i spent the first 2 days with it really trying to learn and figure out the menu, which to me was the hardest part of the camera. there isnt a ton of available resources for it online like there are for Alpha cameras. and when you ask basic questions, people sometimes talk to you like an idiot since this camera is mostly used by more accomplished cam ops and filmmakers. i definitely want to find/build more of a community like us surrounding this system since it truly does make a lot of sense to upgrade to if you have the volume of work for it. i kind of hate relying on youtubers for knowledge about cameras because a lot of them really arent working professionals... theyre ambassadors (nothing wrong with that, but not what im looking for). I have seen a fair amount of these youtubers slamming the FX6 or saying its not an amazing camera simply because its not a great youtube camera like something from the alpha series. but for field work and actual sets? this camera is a dream come true. i appreciate your transparency and hope to see more uploads from you!

      The SmallRig half cage or the Tilta one?

  • @2010SLP
    @2010SLP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have had that Smallrig Half Cage for the A7SIII for a few weeks myself. One of the key advantages that you didn’t mention is that the base of the cage is Arca Swiss compatible. So I don’t need to remove the half cage or attach any other mounting plates to easily throw my camera onto my Ronin RSC2. That is a very nice feature IMO. Also, I added a nato rail to the side to quickly add a wooden side handle, which not only adds another easy place to grip the camera, but provides a 2nd cold shoe mount where you can attach your external mic.

    • @westernapproaches
      @westernapproaches 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't believe I didn't mention this! It's why I bought it! On the side of both cages I normally fit an HDMI cable clamp, which would block fitting a rail on the half cage.. The full cage has an integrated NATO rail on that side, which is handy. SmallRig make a side handle with quick-ish thumb screws and a cold shoe on top. That's another potential solution I'm considering.

    • @2010SLP
      @2010SLP 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@westernapproaches I also use the Smallrig HDMI clamp (which is far superior to the bulky plastic thing Sony included with the A7SIII). You can still just fit one of the smaller NATO rails just beneath the HDMI clamp. I bought two. One for the top handle and one for the side handle. Was worried it would work before I got it, but it fits both locations perfectly. This is the one I got: SmallRig Mini Quick Release NATO Rail (48mm) 2172
