Suzuki V Strom 650 - Great Beginner Motorcycle...Sort of
The 650 V Strom could be a great beginner motorcycle for lots of people particularly if you are over 5'10" tall. It has it's ups and downs, I explain from a beginners perspective. Along with lots of pretty Rocky Mountain scenery to enjoy along the ride. This ride was in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada.

      I believe that it would be a different configuration on a 2013. Subaru changed the IACV style in 2007 and again 2013 (at least on Imprezas). You would have to find another video for your model year.

      I just used a pry bar. But I worked slowly very carefully around until it broke loose. Wasn't too concerned about the old oil pan since it was getting scrapped. You just need to be careful about damaging the block since it is aluminum.

    First comment, Ever on these sites! Thanks for the review, well done if a bit droney in the voice. 2011 V -Strom 650 a close friend was planning on getting rid of and purchasing a New bike, and said "Ya wanna buy it?!" So, for my 50th year on this Planet, having Never ridden or owned a Motorcycle, I thought, Sure, that sounds like a great Idear..... 4 months, 4K miles, and 4 tip-overs, (I had to learn how to pick it up!) later, I have grown into it, and love it. Crash bars, skid plate, luggage carriers, Bark Buster hand guards, and a switch to a 48 rear sprocket are the only upgrades from stock. I take it backpacker camping as often as possible, and it can do more than I ever will be able to on a bike. Oh, I am 5'6" and 151# of beat up tree-climbing-truck-driver body with a 30" inseam, so she is Tall and Heavy for me. Thanks for reading.....

    Do you have to jack up the engine to replace the oil pan? Theoil pan I got , the plug looks fake

    • @chasingsnails
      @chasingsnails 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you do need to lift the engine up a little bit to replace the oil pan. Most things can still stay connected. But you do need to undo the engine mounts, pull the dipstick, and remove the air intake (maybe the exhaust too, I forget it was a long time ago). Then lift the engine (ideally with an engine crane) only about an inch or so to get all the bolts off and drop the pan. Don't forget to drain the oil first.

    I have a 2002 Subaru Legacy GT and I was having a lot of issues with symptoms of either MAF/MAP sensor or IAT sensor and after further research an Idle Control Valve problem too potentially. Anyhow I replaced the IAT sensor because I don't think this car has a MAF/MAP sensor, at least where it's supposed to be it isn't. That made things better but only for a little while, that's what led to checking them Idle Control Valve. Well, that was completely stuck and carboned up really bad. I took it off and cleaned it up best possible with MAF cleaner and it seems to have solved the issue, at least the idle is much better and I'm not getting the hesitation and varying fuel surges and cut outs. I'm really hoping this fixed my problem. If not I might have a vacuum leak somewhere and I'll have to take it to the shop for that because I don't know how to fix that problem. By the way, I can get a new idle control valve for like $15, so they obviously aren't expensive anymore.

    • @johnchilson6596
      @johnchilson6596 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to mention my check engine light is still on and had been for years without any issues. I forget the sensor that is probably causing that but I used to be able to make that go away by just unclipping the electrical connector but not anymore.

    Knew I was gonna like this video when I saw it! I have a really minor, irregular misfire on my 03 Outback that doesn't throw a code- it used to do it all the time before I replaced all the ignition components. it's not as bad now, but of course still makes me nervous. Any way idea on how I can diagnose?

    • @chasingsnails
      @chasingsnails 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can be tricky to diagnose if it doesn't throw a code. You could try checking the cat and O2 sensors if you didn't replace those. But you could spend a lot of time and/or money and still not find the culprit. If it isn't too bad, I would suggest to continue to drive it unless it gets worse.

    • @christoff1499
      @christoff1499 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chasingsnails thanks for the response. it has gotten slightly worse but that was straight from start up, cold which I admittedly just drive away before idiling. Mainly notice the issue at stop lights and it's very irregular. I have seen some idle control valves for around $10-$20. Obviously OEM parts are more expensive, but is there that much of a difference that would justify $20 vs $200?

    • @christoff1499
      @christoff1499 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chasingsnails also, how do you feel about simply cleaning the existing control valve with upper engine cleaner?

    • @chasingsnails
      @chasingsnails 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christoff1499 cleaning the existing IACV is a good idea. I don't think that your idling issue is the IACV from your description. But cleaning it won't hurt. I had a similar issue with my 03 Outback. With my car it was related to a bad Catalytic converter and it didn't throw a code either. Yours could be a few different things and it's hard to diagnose even for an experienced mechanic if it doesn't throw a code. Hope you can get it sorted.
