very, very useful and real-life oriented, be it HOW or anything else live sound! Subbed...
So what’s the nominal average meter level I should stage it at…for vocals keys guitars on digico sd12
On digico I aim for -2/-5 on drum close mics. -10 for overheads and things further away. -5 for bass if it’s compressed and overdriven already or -10 if it sucks and is really dry. -10 for guitars -10/-5 keys and vocals I run like -20 and use compressers to add level so it can’t clip if they scream. In general -15 for dynamic sources -10 for normal sources -5 for transient things like drums. -20 for really dynamic stuff. Middle of the meter is a good rule of thumb on the Digico’s as a starting point.
VU Meters make this so much easier
Good work; always wondered what you were up to these days. Hope you are well!
What name of software you use for mixer
Is O db analog equivalent to -18 db digital?
Most of the time
Can we sidechain in live??
I wouldn't recommend it. Usually it just creates problems
Multiband gates help a lot with the tom gating, you can set the frequency bandwidth to cover just the fundamental of the tom that way it'll only open for that. It isn't available on the SSL channel strip, but I'm pretty sure a Digico would have something for side-chaining an EQ'd signal to a gate to do this. *edit - also, with the new dynamic eq feature you can pull down a normal eq band to get rid of harsh cymbal frequencies before the gate, then have a dynamic eq band that pulls it back up in response to a sidechained signal of the fundamental tom frequency so that the higher freq smack of the skin is still there, but only when the tom gets hit. Hugely increases dynamic range in a very natural way. Maybe overkill, but super cool there's heaps of options now to mitigate bleed!
Unless it's a side chain filter it's also going to wreck the phase of your other drums if you only do it to one channel.
@@thepowerplaceproduction For the multiband gate or dynamic eq?
@@alakovideo anything multi band on a multi mic'd instruments like drums needs to be done to all drums or no drums usually. its adding crossover points and rotating the phase a bunch. Not that you can't...if you cut out all the bleed in post then it's less of an issue. I try to stay away from multi band. Dynamic eq is fine!
this is first time sound guy loves coldplay God bless
Couldn’t have done this better! Well explained 👏 👏👏
Yo ikilo sg tak maksud tellungkoco🎉 LCDne masuk deck
None of his techniques matters since he used the tunebot anyways 🤣 and its a troll you show beginners to stand in the snare with your dirty ugly shoes ✌️.. thanks for the effort making this video anyways.. and by the way all the effort got wasted from tuning the bottom head cause you just stand on it and you need to retune it again
best video so far thank you
Guys you are awesome 😎. It really helps me to understand what is going on with plastics and drums. I using tunebot studio for 8 months but never really develope my ears. Actually your video is listening as a podcast so great😂
One doubt is that i could see the meter are shouting valume as high is it like you set you amplifier in desire value. cuz I doubt like its too lought right? normally from the PA Amp we use to drive half of the volume.
The SM57 is too flat. It should angled more towards the center of the drum…
Fantastic video! "We don't want people to be sad." My favorite quote. As an old sound person who has been around from the analog to digital conversion, I can say this is a wonderful and very informative guide. I learned some things! Thank you Ryan!
George of the jungle. Will never forget this advice. Thanks!
Great Video on Gain structure!!!
Thank you
To me the floor tom sounds higher?
2:03 - "Zero is clipping" Well, that depends on what you are talking about/looking at. input meters or fader meters? (these can be different things if you are looking at software or the desk itself) Also depends on the manufacturer of the desk you are using, as I know that Behringer and Allan & Heath set their metering up a little differently.
Sounds like a cardboard box
Good explanation, but simpler the chain the easier the gain structure, digial or analog. The more plug ins used the more complicated it can get. Also sometimes we get plug in crazy, close tour eyes and listen to changes or toggle them on and off. If its not that big of differnce then you might not need it. Somwtimes i have to catch myslef to not use womehtinf just because i may barely hear it but may not be worh instering into the signal chain.
It sounds great. Congratulations. Big problem I see today is how to train this kind of Mixing if I don’t even access the Worship style multitracks.
Uses a black beauty as a ladder. Epic
Sorry buddy, U made a massive mistake due tuning the Bottom head. 👆 I have got the same tunebot on my own. When u use the tunebot on the Bottom head and u go near or over 400 hertz u must use the high frequency Button on the tunebot. Otherwise it could be u allways get 400hertz because in normal Mode the tunebot can't detect higher. It is it's maximum When u Hit the high frequency Button the tunebot will be able to detect more than 400 hertz 😉 U r welcome 😉🤟🥁🤟
Never knew that! Thanks for sharing I’ll have to try that out!
Great video. I’m the worship director at my church here California. We currently have an x32 and it’s on his last breath. 😅. We planning on going the next step up and s31 seems like a great option for us. This videos you do are supper helpful. I do have some questions. Do you do any consulting ñ? Is the are way we can contact you?
Hey there! You can email Ryan at ryan@atlasavl.com and he can help you figure out what will work best for you and get you set up and running.
This is a very useful video, but I have a different opinion. If I mix everything I can in the studio, I can't do that in a live system, because safety is very important with power amplifiers and speakers dealing with large voltages. So I add a little bit of transients on the drums at line level so that they light up at +3dB, and the end result is that I want the mix to run safely at line level. This is to prevent clipping on sudden input signals and subsequently protect the system if you don't have a dynamic processor. The desired mix is an operation, but it is also an operation to keep the system running well.
Very good explanations, especially the important topics of peak level and average level and how to handle them. Great video !
Hi! What iem do you use?
Hi. Can you tell me if you can record with this console at 96 kHz via USB, or is it limited to 48? Great videos, by the way! Thank you.
You can run the console at 96k or 48k and record at the same time. But the recording sample rate is always 48k.
Solid video but I’m not standing on my Black Beauty or any of my snares for that matter! 😳😁 Instead, I tighten the top head really tight and let it sit overnight, then tune the next day. I also tune the top head to about 300hz so the fundamental of the drum ends up about a G or G# but this is more Bohnam than big fat snare sound.
Hey sir! I'm an audio tech at my church. We have the exact same set up at one of our campuses. Digico S31 60 channel version, Hear Tech WSG Bridge , Waves Soundgrid Impact server, and Superrack. For some reason when we use the insert send and return audio will pass through Superrack but no audio will come out of the console but as soon as we turn the insert off the audio will pass through again. Heres an example of an input and signal flow...Shure ULXD Mic comes into the S31 as a Dante input, then insert (send and return) Dante out to the bridge then out to the vocal bus, then master. We have a workaround set up in the mean time but that is not preferred. With the way we currently have it working if the server were to crash or Any ideas on what we could be doing wrong? We have to be missing something. I have spoken with Hear Tech support, Waves and Digico to no avail. We performed some needed updates but its still not working as designed. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!
Email me ryan@atlasavl.com I’ll see if I can fix it for you!
Awesome video, loved this one and the black beauty tuning video! Question, how does a non drummer get into teching drums? Lol
Great question! If you’re a house tech then I recommend spending everyday trying to practice it a little bit. The more you do it the faster you will develop an ear for it. If you aren’t ask to borrow a friends drum or buy a cheap one to learn how it works. Never ask to tune a drummers kit if you aren’t sure you can improve a sound/fix a problem for sure or you end up making a fool of yourself and it’s not a good way to steward that relationship. The goal is to serve the drummer and help them sound their best.
That was an excellent guide, thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
God bless you thank you so much for taking the time to do this because we don’t have anyone to show us and we’re trying so hard to do as good as we can and do research to figure things out and put the pieces together
I have issues with snares clipping
If your running it at a good signal level but running into clipping it’s possible the drummer has bad playing technique and is hitting really light AND really hard. Try using a bit more compression than you normally would!
This is brilliant!!
LOVE this!
If your console meters were setup to be RMS instead of PEAK would you just gain every channel to -18?
Yeah but in my experience the only desk that offers true RMS metering is the Avid S6L. I think digico is just digital or “analog” style metering. If it’s analog vu style shoot for 0 on most things but -5 or -7 for low end stuff.
Also not every channel is going to work at the same gain level. Especially if it’s a dynamic input. Pastors/speakers who talk regular and pastors/speakers who yell and get all hyped up is a great example of where you might need to leave more or less room. Depends on what you’re mixing a little bit.
You can get a similar result by adjusting the ballistics surely?@@thepowerplaceproduction
One of the best videos I've seen regarding mixing. Captions that let people know what you are doing why is incredible. Most people do not take time to do this. I hope you consider doing more like this. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! Will be trying to make more like this in 2024.
My man why you clipping the hell out of the master bus
That desk shows clipping before actual clipping. It’s annoying. The broadcast feed is what is metering and it has an L2 set to -1.0. Always shows red on the desk around -4 but it’s fine. I guess they think it’s to warn you. To me it makes it useless. It also reads -18 as -20. It’s weird! I don’t recommend clipping your converters haha
Livesound has cometo be too Hitech and studio thinking
I guess people are just used to better mixes now so we have to keep up. Keeps me learning! Especially with broadcast coming off the console these days. It has to be a good mix on the desk first before the room or your fired haha
Sound saturating
Hiii
What is being fed to your IE? The main outs? Thank you for posting!
The IEM feed is the stream mix. The stream mix is the main pa mix with the crowd mics added. No separate mixes.
Lots of good suggestions. However recommend fitting butt end snare wire end fitting first as the position won’t move like the strainer end. You say that the snare wires you have fitted are Puresound. Unfortunately this is incorrect as (1) Puresound have straight ended brass end plates (2) Puresound don’t make more than 30 strand snare wires not 40 (3) these are probably Gibraltar 42 strand wires - still great wires though!! 🤘😁🥁👍
Any tutorials using the actual plugins on the board
There are no plugins on the board just normal digital EQ and dynamics.
Got that Chris greely preset eh?
Love Chris! Learned so much from him. Chris, Vance Powell, and Michael Brauer are my favorites.
