Exhibition opening event of 'My Journey My project' - group 2 2024

artspaces.kunstmatrix.com/en/exhibition/13462058/my-journey-my-project-2024-group-2
In January 2024, nine individuals signed up for my ‘Project mentoring’ yearlong course. Some thought they had an idea they wanted to make reality, others had no idea and were looking for support to get started. What they all had in common, was a desire to learn, and create a body of work by the end of the year.
What you see on the walls, reflects just a small part of each individual’s journey. Every single set of images is unique, and is the culmination of our time together as a group. Some of the projects are ongoing, and what you see is just a gathering of images from the journey up until this point.
Throughout the experience, I have offered encouragement, ideas, information and support, to encourage self-development, and learning skills, which can be used time and time again to create photography projects of all shapes and sizes. During our monthly sessions, we have looked at how to generate ideas, and identify opportunities and inspiration. Also how to work with planning, and working with short and long timescales and small and large bodies of work. In addition, we have also learnt how to write about projects and create artist statements.
Although I have been the facilitator and educator, I can not express my gratitude enough to all the group members for their support they have shown each other over the year.
In each room you will find the work of three or four of the group members. As you walk around the gallery, please take the time to read the artist statements for each individual. Just as you would in a real gallery or museum, these will give you an insight not only into the projects, but also the person behind the images. Some of the journeys are very personal, and I feel privileged and proud to be able to share them here with you.

Incredible work - this was so interesting to watch. Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for leaving the comment much appreciated.
Excellent Video, lovely creations created thru ICM.

Thank you for posting this video. I found it very helpful and appreciate your beautiful photos and explanations of how they were created.
A fantastic walk through of your wonderful looking book... Stu 😎
Thanks Stu, lovely comment, glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Charlie - Who'd have thought we could create so many variations of images from our own flower gardens utilising different techniques. Very inspiring... Stu 😎
Thanks, glad it inspired!
absolutely loved the shell like effect on some of the hosta pics. :)
Its cool ! I was amazed as it appeared on the back of my camera, something almost dead creating something like that. Thanks for watching and your comment.
Wonder how much post processing was used?
Given that its an hour video feel free to ask regarding any specific photos. I'd be more than happy to explain. But in general I try to make most images in camera with a few adjustments with whites and blacks sliders and cropping. If you think i'm misleading you in some way feel free to shout up - i'm more than happy to explain. My videos are made to help people.
I bought it, a good way to see your work and dive into your personality. Now I have to be patient until I get it. 😀 My second photography book from the Netherlands this year.
Thank you so much, I saw your order come in and wondered how you had found it. You will definitely get to know me and my photography from the book. It encompasses all sorts of photographic techniques which I chose to interpret what I was seeing and feeling. I've already send a couple of books to France, and they arrived within a week of posting, so you might have it for the weekend. Many thanks. By the way what was the other book from the Netherlands? I might have to look it up.
Such a variety of beautiful images!
Thank you so much xxxx
It's been wonderful to be able to see the exhibition through your camera Charlotte, as I wasn't able to visit myself. Thank you so much. The work is of astounding quality and such a huge range of images. Lovely!
So glad you enjoyed the walk around x
Just saw your video of your gallery exhibition. Fantastic. Like how you chose complimentary colors for balance. Put a lot of thought into the presentation, and it shows. Well done'

Great video Charlotte ❤ So many great photographers 😊
Thanks Pradeep, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I spent the whole week admiring everyone elses work! Every day a new favourite photograph. So many ideas and inspiration.
Beautiful images, good ideas. Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for your comment, i hope you enjoy using the ideas with your own photography
Thank you for a great video; I just learned about Avg Can Pro. Is there a way to control the exposure with this app; such as slow shutter speeds? Thanks again.
I find its a fairly basic app. I just use it on auto and play with how many images i stack on top to balance the exposure. Given that you cant alter settings between images ive not found it is very complicaed!
Great ICM primer, thanks so much for sharing! Cheers from Montreal 😉
Glad you enjoyed it - great to know my ideas are being enjoyed all cover the world x
Have you used the multiple exposure feature on this app? I am trying to use it without success - I can't get the shutter to pause so I can move and capture a second scene. Thank you.
Hi there i have tried it and find it not very good personally. The second image normally obliterates the first so its not something I included in the tutorial as i don't use it. Much a similar experience as yourself.
What an absolutely captivating presentation! Thank you Ania and Charlotte.
Ok
Great presentation. Lots of inspiration to get out and take more photos!
Sounds brilliant, I hope you have fun next time you are out.
So glad you are enjoying the ICM revisit - I love Ernst Haas’s work especially the bull fighting ICM how he managed to create that before digital I have no idea ❤
There's a few ways you can do this with film and printing. You can take 2 to 3 exposures at half or a third of the exposure time as you're moving the Camera and then. Using one sheet of photographic paper expose all three images onto the paper. One of the other way used to do multiple exposures within the Camera by clicking the release button and winding on without actually winding the film on. Again you have to reduce your exposure time to allow for multiple images on the same piece of film.
Haas loved Kodachrome type F which was rated at 12 ASA so it was relatively easy for him to shoot at speeds of a quarter of a second in the evening light at the bullring. He was so used to this emulsion that as the story goes when Kodak introduced the new fangled “high speed” variety we all grew to use and raved over: KM 25 and said they would cease production of the original one, he purchased several hundred rolls of it.
@@m3photo726 really interesting - i still find it amazing to make ICM without being able to check as I go along to see what is happening and play with the settings as I go.
Well feel free not to watch any more xxx I wouldn’t want to waste your time. 😂
The cool thing about videos is that they are not powerpoint presentations. Normally.
Greetings from the USA. Great presentation. Enjoyed it very much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for dropping me a message and letting me know
I loved your presentation. I've just started ICM and you have opened up unlimited possibilities. Thank you
Thats brilliant, thanks so much for your message, its lovely to hear than my videos help.
How do you use the AE and AF lock options? If I press the AE to lock exosure then press AF to lock focus on a different area the AE becomes unlocked. Thanks.
I found this when researching for approaches and inspiration with regard to ICM photography; what a find! I've always wanted to experiment more with this technique and it provided everything I wanted. Thanks so much!
Thats brilliant, so glad you enjoyed it. I think its refreshing to see how many ways one word can be interpreted with the ICM technique and each and every one valid and unique.
@@charlottebellamycreativephoto Just got back from my first attempts Charlotte; mixed success, but learned a lot!
@@grandaded stick at it - Rome wasn't built in a day!
I experimented with Haas-like movement images in early 80s with horse, ballet, etc images, as well as double-exposures. Then, I put away my cameras. Recently, I decided to go back to photography, but with digital cameras. I stumbled onto your videos and have tried more types of ICM, including triple-exposures and a few 1-sec ICMs during a rainstorm. Thanks for inspiration.
I love photographing in the rain - it adds an extra dimension - we get so much rain here as well, always something to experiment with!
Super helpful and instructive. Much appreciated and it is very motivating when feeling meh about photography.
Beautifully demonstrated and explained. Most helpful and some wonderful results. Thank you Charlotte
Great instructional overview of ICM creativity! Thanks for posting your examples!
As always, this is a very informative video. Thanks so much. I’m curious about your ISO settings, because I see that they vary quite a lot from one image to another. What is your thinking about setting and changing the ISO, along with aperture and shutter speed?
Hi Claudia - my ISO I try to keep at 50 or 100 when I am doing ICM. You may have seen higher ISO readings when I was showing the sharp images - then I don't mind too much increasing my ISO to ensure I keep a good depth of field or a fast enough shutter speed if I am not using a tripod (which I rarely do!). I tend to think cameras have such good capabilities with ISO these days, I think nothing of going to 800 and will even use 12,800 if I don't have my tripod with me and still want the shot. With ICM I tend to select a shutter speed and adjust the depth of field first, then ISO. Hope that helped. Glad you enjoyed the video,
@@charlottebellamycreativephoto Thank you so much, Charlotte, for the very helpful response. I recently listened to a panel discussion with 3 ICM artists, including one of whom shoots with 1000 ISO all the time, the other 2 prefer 100, which is what I have generally favored, so I was puzzled. 😁
Thank you, Charlotte for sharing your knowledge and experience so selflessly and generously.💖
You are most welcome, I am glad you enjoyed the video. Have fun with your photography
Thank you for a great tutorial and for the beautiful images that you create.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave it for me.
A most excellent video!!! I’ve been shooting ICM for over a year (still lots to learn) and this was incredibly helpful to me - not only re-visiting what I already knew but I loved the details you presented on the type of movement and the shutter speed used. Your images are amazing and I now feel inspired once again to just go out and “shake, rattle & roll” 😁
Brilliant, thanks so much for letting me know - I am so glad it helps you to develop your ICM skills - enjoy the shale rattle and roll - might have to use that as a title somewhere!!!
Thank you. I grabbed a flower & followed along!
Brilliant - thanks for letting me know xx

@@charlottebellamycreativephoto Many thanks for your replies. I will drop you my email address on your website. Thanks to your good self I've created my first ever double exposure in Photoshop. At 76 this old girl is enjoying the remote learning as I'm a bit disabled now so cannot gallivant as I used to. Take care thank you once again Pam Reynolds
I really enjjoyed this, loved seeing the different movements and shutter speeds :) My fave images were the ones you called 'the dark woods'...loved them and the contrast they brought.
Thanks so much! 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the process and the end results.
Hi Charlotte. What a spectacular walk through bluebell woodlands. You've shown many different images with slightly different exposure times and movements that in just 30mins of your video I've learned so much about the intricacies of ICM and this has given my so many ideas for adopting & trying out for myself. I think for me I really like the images created around the 1 second exposure so 8862 & 8890 were images I really liked, and again you've demonstrated that different movements can result in totally different images, some I loved and others not so much, an important lesson indeed. I thought the long exposure image (8845) was a really interesting experiment and I really liked the result that you've achieved so something else to experiment with. The images I really liked (apart from most of those you showed!!) were 9309 as I think it is simply stunning and a beautiful image, it hasn't lost its sense of place or focus but the ICM lifts the resulting image really well. I also really like the close-up flower images ( love flower photography) particularly 9188 which I thought was stunning and your ICM movement gave a painterly affect with the small circular movement. I really like 8909 as a flower image, it's beautiful!! and, as an experiment, would really like to see this as a combined image with 8912 as a texture and blended in Photoshop. I'm wondering if you have ever considered experiment with portrait mode particularly with the close-up flower images so that the flowers are shown from their roots and the trees in the background are more defined - just a thought? Thank-You for this video🙏 , it has given me so many ideas to think about and experiment with in my image making. Cheers, Stu 🤓
Stu, thank you so much for a wonderful reply to my video. Its blown me away how much you have taken from what I presented to you. Part of learning ICM is also learning what YOU like. Anyone can teach what they do, but ICM is all about personal interpretation. I often get asked what makes a bad or good ICM image and really there is not a definitive answer - because if you love what you create, that is the most important thing. That awareness will come with time when you make an image and look at the back of the camera with excitement - that should tell you what you like. Build on this and you will also find your own style. 8 years ago I learned ICM 'bar code' style - over time i have finessed that towards what i like personally in my images, not what i think it necessarily should be. I thought your lovely long thought out comment deserved a thoughtful answer as i really appreciate you taking the time to make it.

@@charlottebellamycreativephoto Thank you Charlotte for your considered reply. I mentioned a while back that I follow Kim Grant and through her teachings & philosophy, I have learnt to be more consider and intentional in my own creation of images, so combining this with observing your ICM skills and learning from your teachings, this will hopefully result in me being able to create ICM images that reflect my intentions and result in images that I really like, which it's all about really isn't it. 😊
Thank you for including your hands in the shot - it's a great help to see the movements you make! After all, when is a jiggle actually a joggle?! Also, did you leave the ISO on auto?
Liz you make an excellent point about my hands! Glad they were useful, so many times I teach people ask me to 'actually show' what i am doing with the camera as its all well to try and explain it, but an example paints a thousand words. Most people are amazed how little movement i actually make for my ICM images. Thanks for watching this vid, hope you enjoy others.
Hi Liz, sorry just saw your comment about auto - no I always use manual auto, and have it set as low as possible. On my Nikon Z6II that is 50.

Thanks Charlotte 👍- I'm learning more about ICM everyday. I wouldn't have thought of combining multiple images in this way, but the affect is stunning, at least they are in your images 😀 I have a question for you. When you start to blend the 2nd batch of images (around 12mins) you say the combination is "still flat". I'm just wondering what you mean by this? Thanks... Stu 🤓
Hi Stu - 'flat' is a feeling of how much depth the image has when you look at it. Do you feel carried through the image, or do you feel that it is 2 dimensional and that you are looking at something rather than into it. Hope that helps. I love to encourage the viewer into my images and ensuring that the light is variable throughout the image can help with this.
@@charlottebellamycreativephoto or the clarification - I now understand 🙂
