Judgment at Nuremberg indeed needs more love. To be pedantic for just a second, Irene isn't Jewish; she was a sixteen-year-old girl whose Jewish foster father was accused of having an impure relationship with her, and now, she has the chance to tell what really happened, at great emotional cost. It's a powerhouse performance.
No one has mentioned "Not as a Stranger" with Olivia DeHaviland that was a great movie!!!
I'm so happy I found this channel! One film I feel should have been included among the Honorable Mentions is All This and Heaven Too (1940), a romantic period drama in which everything between Davis and Charles Boyer is conveyed through looks, voice, and body language. Something like this would never fly in today's cinema culture, but this was another role Davis lobbied hard for. She wanted to prove that she could play a character who was genuinely kind and good, and make that character interesting. She does exactly that, and in Charles Boyer she has a leading man who is every bit as charismatic as she is. (The less said about Jeffrey Lynn, the better, though...)
Thank you for mentioning A Midsummer Night's Dream among your Honorable Mentions. Cagney makes a delightful Bottom. Since White Heat came in at #2, there was no way Yankee Doodle Dandy couldn't be #1. I don't know of any actor working today who could have pulled off such brilliant performances as two such wildly different characters.
About 20 years ago, I was sick, and was in hospital for a month. And when I came back home, I had two movies on DVDs, which a friend of mine had bought and given to me before I went to hospital. One was Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, the other was Vertigo. I watched both many times, and they were an immense help in my recovery.
In Blood and Sand she and Tyrone Power were electric together. And she and Anthony Quinn, esp. during their dance.
He’s such a good actor he was able to be a total turnoff in Ryan’s Daughter and still seduced Sarah Miles who was 34 years younger
Do yourself a favor: find and watch that supposedly "lost" film, Letty Lynton. You won't be disappointed either in the movie or in Joan's performance.
Rain was ahead of its time! I wish the copy I saw was better quality! The plot twist near the end still baffles me!
JAMES CAGNEY.
Barbara Stanwyck was without a doubt unparalleled- I’ve never seen any film she was in where she didn’t “steal the show”- I just can’t take my eyes off of her! Once again, you’ve introduced me to a few films I’ve not seen but am now inspired to watch! I love your insights, thoroughness, passion, and interspersed bits of humor! Thanks for another great video!
She had a tonne of abortions too!
Nobody could beat her at playing hard core women.!!!! Excellent actress. I would go so far as to say, that she made George Raft, Humphrey Bogart etc. appear as delinquent choirboys.!!!!

One of the best films ever about loss and what might have been. Up there with Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. Heart-wrenching. Love your review but it's definitely an A+.......
Ragtime?
I loved her in Lured, where she had the benefit of a smart, witty script by the great humorist Leo Rosten, who also wrote the story for The Dark Corner. His style of writing was perfectly suited for her delivery style!
5:30 The Heiress is one of my all time favorite films. I assume Monty walked out of the premier because his character was such a lowlife, but he was great convincing the audience he was. The premise doesn't really make sense though: Catherine has $10,000 a year, the equivalent of $400,000 in today's money. But Morris, expecting $30,000 ($1,200,000 today), runs away and returns 7 years later. Catherine turns the tables on him vengeful ending. This differs from the novel.. It was remade in 1997 as Washington Square, the original title, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh.
I so enjoyed Mr Cagney every time I watched him . Also,. Check this out...I think Michael Jackson picked up some of his dance moves from Mr Cagney. If I'm right... wouldn't that be something..
@@Tamara-db3ep There was talk of MJ doing a musical version of ' Angels with dirty Faces' years ago but it came to nothing. I noticed the poster for The Public Enemy in the Smooth Criminal video...
A marvellous appraisal. Especially appreciated today on his 125th birthday...he really did fizz like the sky rocket during that 'Give my regards to Broadway' number. What a bewitching contradiction he was. An aesthete playing the philistine. Author, Robert Sklar wrote:" he took the spirit of the street & made it national". I always found it telling, that one of his biographers, Patrick McGilligan named his study of this great star, 'Cagney: Actor as Auteur'. His vivid improvisational touches in every scene linger long in the mind's eye. Every performance he ever gave put a spring in the step of the viewer. I'd love to descend a flight of stairs the way he does at the end of 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. I would have to check my insurance first though!! Thanks for the video, sir...loved the kinetic editing which befits the mercurial little dynamo which it celebrates...
Haven't seen some of the picks.......but i was looking for G-Men
@@danielzerbe8567 That's funny... normally, G- Men are looking for other people!!
'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye' and 'The Time of Your Life' are two of my favourites but I'll agree with you on 'One, Two, Three', which is joyous.
So far, I’ve seen Cagney in The Public Enemy, The Roaring Twenties, and White Heat.
Many treats ahead of you then...he proved a master farceur in Billy Wilder's frenetic 'One, Two, Three'...
can you do one on ingrid bergman please!!
Great list! But yeah, Man of a Thousand Faces would've been in my Top 10. Also loved City For Conquest and Strawberry Blonde. Loved your video!
One of my favs too!🎉
He's just too amazing, as are you!!!!
Friends of Eddie Coyle !!!!
Barbara stanwyck was definitely a class act One of a kind❤❤❤
notorious number 9??? should be 1
The Women is such a classic movie!
ID works on so many levels. One is that it creates an interest in us for so many 'minor' characters -- from Harvey Fierstein as David's neurotic friend, to Kiersten Warren as Jasmine's doomed new age stripper girlfriend, to probably the most important of the minor characters, Randy Quaid as the flawed but loving parent who fiercely gives it all for his family. Humor, action, romance, explosions, patriotism -- what's not to like?
Great voices! You should be an actor...oh, wait :) One of my favorite Romcoms. Others are: 1. My Man Godfrey 2. Notting Hill 3. The Apartment 4. Some Like It Hot 5. When Harry Met Sally' 6. High Fidelity
Robert Ryan is à great Actor!!!!
Thank you for posting this. Hard to rate her movies....talking about a "film goddess" with a lifetime of work. My top would be a tie between Sudden Fear and Mildred Pearce, both Oscar worthy! Then Humoresque and Possessed. What about Autumn Leaves? That was a later gem. Just in my opinion....Hope you will keep posting your Top 10's. Nicely done, The Film Lovers Guide!!!
I saw him in Two Gentlemen of Verona and years later met him back stage at Arms and the Man. He used to fast one day a week. He was a beautiful person! Wonderful actor!
Thanks for another great video! Absolutely agree with The Philadelphia Story as his best! And Sylvia Scarlett is so entertaining and SO way ahead of its time!
A+ for this channel, this brilliant movie and the wonderful narrator! Thankyou ✨️!
Trog !
Toxic Tina is getting hers... I mean, how "good" can a person be when you spend 40 years on a "Greatest Hits" tour slagging her mother. I mean, she hated her mother, but her mother's name and legacy buttered her bread for DECADES. Hell, not even Holocaust victims got that long a platform. Toxic Tina was jealous of her mother's success.. NEVER wanting to do the work that her mother did for YEARS!! She earned her place by hard work. Something Toxic Tina could never do.. many a director spoke against Tina and how unprofessional she was. By contrast.. ANY interview Joan did was an event... you wanted to know MORE.
Rosalind Russell 🥺 pleaseeee She is so underatad
"A Woman's Face" is one of the most psychological films I've seen; i.e., overcoming her disfigurement and coming under the influence of a Svengali-like man. "The Women" is wonderful in part because of her great performance as the "bad girl." Regarding her interviews, there was one in which the British interviewer said "Bett Davis." Joan responded that Bette would basically kill him if she heard him say that. As for her later movies, I thought she was great in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," although I now find that film too disturbing. Finally, there is "Trog" (1970) which I think was her last film.
Female on the Beach was a great performance. She told off more people and gave a good face slap.
Like Him in The Long Hot Summer, Sweet Bird of Youth, Paris Blues and From the Terrace even though they weren't oscar worthy materials.....Favorites......Cat On The Hot Tin Roof, Hud, Cool Hand Luke.....He plays a a good no gooder😍........Back then He was so good looking and sinful (sigh)
Love this movie too - especially Hepburn's performance. But of course she starred on Broadway in the role, and also - just recently discovered this - toured the US doing it as well. She even came to my rinky-dink town in Ohio to play Tracy Lord. I always thought the writing was a little twisted though - it seemed like all the men in her life were blaming her for their own misdeeds. Not exactly enlightened thinking, which is why I figured the play is not often done these days.
