I found when using 75ohm cable and a 60-70foot circumference loop that a 3/10 winding worked best, that bumped the ratio to 1/11 or 75/825 ohm. It gave me better performance, along with adding a 1m Ohm to bleed the loop of static and pair of inverse diode on the coax side to kill any voltages that could be introduced from nearby transmitting antenna.

When I watched the last video I read bunch of articles about the transformer setup. Great follow up video.

Yaesu radios have tons of advanced features which require a flick through the manual. The MUTE is the green button in the center above vfo, both vfo’s have a green and a red button, the red is for transmit main or sub and the green for receive for main and sub which is essentially mute. Yaesu has used this feature in their contest grade radios for a very long time.

Actially, I have one among other antennas. Yes, it has a bit less noise, but I am in the mountains so my 40 meter inverted V is pretty quiet too. Contrary to popular perception if you don't exceed the power rating of your transformer you can transmit on it in a manner that is essentially NVIS thus have nice chats with the guy in the next town on 40 meters. I checked mine with my Nano Vna & while resonance is where the absolute value of inductive reactance equals the absolute value of capacitive reactance thus each cancels each other & the impedance is strictly resistive it is resonate on some frequency if not several. I think what you meant is having a relective power indicated by an swr of 1 to 1 relative to 50 ohm coax. Anyway, mine has about a 1.3 to 1 swr pretty much across 40 meters, but that's to be expected since its roughly one 40 M wave length at 40 meters. Its Ok on 20 M too but not quite as good. 80 meters I say it is disappointing and I would go with a larger loop than the 15 foot square if 80 meters was of real interest.

Great video please put out another video after you've had the 101D for another year and I think you'll be ready to give up the icom a little bit easier than having a gun pointed to your head I'm a little bit partial to Yazoo but I am honest in my opinions so give me another report a year from now ,thank you very much for the video again and I do believe icom is a great radio.. please take my comments with a grain of salt haha happy dxing. Use a LoG with my kenwood 590s (has rec port), using RG6 as feed and about 75ft of 12awg twin wire, cuts out a lot of noise.

While the DVI is a irritation a DVI to HDMI adapter is cheap an easy.

I like the RF gain better on the Yaesu. It also serves as a sort of squelch, and combined with the DNR and the very quiet DX makes for almost FM level copy. And yes you can record QSOs. Essentially you gotta choose whether or not you want another 20 db of strong adjacent signal rejection.

There will be a new Icom in your shack in 2025 or if the goose craps a golden egg an Elecraft HD.

Thanks for the review from a real world / heavy user perspective.

An interesting perspective (I have the FTDX101MP). We all have different usage patterns so I have never used the voice recorder functions. However I have used remote FT8 using a Raspberry Pi with a single USB cable to the radio. The SCU-LAN10 was on back order for a long time despite the price, not used that much yet but quite easy to set up. The receivers are superb (but the low first IF does mean if you tune around 32MHz you will hear activity on the 20m band).

Nice comparison of the differences but in the end the vast majority of them are just implementation differences that are to be expected between radios. Once you become familiar with how a particular manufacturer sets things up on their radios, you can operate it quickly and efficiently, even if it seems to take more steps. I have both ICOM and Yaesu radios and I didn’t purchase either one based on voice memories, controls or buttons. I based it on RX capability/sensitivity and noise reduction/elimination.

You can play your voice record thru monitor at the same time record it on the PC. Then transfer the files to Yaesu (?)

I had looked into purchasing an Icom 7610 or the Yaesu FTDX101(D-MP) but at the time the Icom 7610 was out of stock everywhere and so I decided to purchase the Flex 6400M after being unsure about the Yaesu instead but I eventually did purchase the Icom 7610 ounce it became available and after extensive research and after having loved and still loving my Icom 7300! The determining factor was the screen on the FTX101(D-MP) had been reported by many HAM’s as not nearly as nice and as customizable as the Icom 7610 (like I loved and was use to on my 7300)! As far as my Flex 6400M I still have it but I was very disappointed that it does not have two true independent receivers like the 7610 and 101 plus the waterfall was not as customizable as the Icom plus I missed the RF Gain of the Icom’s as it’s very useful to quickly lower the noise floor as you stated in your video! 73

Yaesu DNR is God tier. That's the difference maker.

Great review Dan. I hope Yaesu sees this video! I have the FT-DX10 and have been happy with it, to the point I bought an FT-710 I now exclusively use for POTA, instead of my 891.
