I had the very same Cabriolet and now the same Westy, and I’m also putting mine back together as I bought it completely apart so as you everything is getting new bushings and bearings and painted, I also have written down everything I’ve ever done to my cars, we are brothers from other mothers for sure, following to help me in my reconstruction
Oh man, that is a cool coincidence!! Good luck with the assembly. The vanagons are so different compared to the cabriolet, but they are also sweet vehicles. Good luck Andrew, and keep up the work! Maybe we’ll run into each other camping one day!
Check out my tune up video as well; it covers all of the filters. Then watch the coolant change video and the transmission fluid change video. Finally, changing the brake fluid is a good idea too and there’s a video also for that on the channel! That should get you relatively caught up on maintenance and services! Not trying to overwhelm, I promise!
Oli, will you do a full video of a timing belt change on your white Cab? I'd love to see it with the deep level of detail you give us. It seems so intimidating, but your videos make everything seem possible.
I absolutely will. I have all of the parts already actually. I can’t make a promise as to when it will be completed, but that video is definitely one of the next ones that I will film.
What Tower brace could I use on my 89 mk1? I'm a mechanic and I've been turning wrench for a long time, but with my recent purchase of my '89 Cabrio I'm still learning what parts cross over from the Gulf/rabbit to the Cabrio. Still a little confusing on the Mark 1 and Mark 2 seems every time I research parts it refers to the rabbit one minute and then the golf the next. And even though mine should be a mark 1 at 89, it seems like some parts don't cross over to both models, at least the way they're listed on certain websites.
@@mikeyskitchenfoodporn1171 quick breakdown. The body parts are all Mk1 1979-1984. The wiring and engine are mk2 1985-1993. Golf mk1 = rabbit mk1. Rabbit sold in the USA, golf everywhere else. Same car, just different name. You have a car with CIS injection. Cabby-info is a great website. Spend some time there. Also VWvortex has a ton of info in the cabriolet section check the FAQ thread, post 75
your videos helped me take on my cabriolet but i took it to an exhaust shop because its just ridiculously loud. they said its not the exhaust and has something to do with the coolant boiler exhuast?? i have no idea what hes talking about and im just thinking of sending it to the scrap yard
That doesn’t exist. Either he is lying or there is a massive miscommunication. You probably just have a cracked exhaust manifold and broken exhaust. Both not that hard to fix. Don’t take it to the scrap yard, you won’t get any money and you’re scrapping a perfectly good car - EXTREMELY wasteful if one thinks about it. Sell it to someone for a good price who has the ability and interest to fix it.
@@jackenrod6794 the mentality of “it’s old, scrap it” kills me. Do you know how many resources went into turning that brown dirt into a steel car? An inordinate amount that is much more than the $500 “value”. Keep the old cars alive and fix them up. Also, they’re only “worth” $500, but what are you going to do when you sell/scrap it? You’re going to BUY a $5000 car. So you’re going to be out a heck of a lot more cash. Alright, there ends my mini lecture haha. Carry on 😀 this topic always gets me a bit animated. New cars are extremely complicated and will not outlast the older ones. You’re 1000% right jack!! I also wasn’t screaming at anyone specifically, just the general mindset of people.
I wish you be able to work on my car because I think you are the best

I've just taken the back axle of my mk1 gti today ,to fit a fuel tank . If also bought springs, shocks and some 6 pot terrox calipers 😊
Perfect timing. Just got a 93 and need to change the oil this weekend.

@@OlisGarage thanks. I worry about removing the pulley. Every video I've seen someone has to drill them out! Thanks, Oli. I've learned a lot from you.
Do you think I could use an oil extractor to do the oil change on my cabby?

@@OlisGarage Excellent advice. Modern cars are purposely over complicated. Save them.

@@OlisGarage Agree with both of you. I will add that aftermarket LEDs suck. They over promise and under deliver.
