Armortek 1/6 scale Tiger 1, late variant, photo gallery
Photo gallery containing photos of my first Armortek kit. Late Tiger 1 produced by Armortek in 2007. An ongoing build with many scratch built components outside and in. It’s an ongoing project. Currently working on fitting the KwK 36 88mm gun.
The model represents Tiger 212 pz.abt. 101.
commanded by Balthasar (Bobby) Woll but better known as the Tiger driven by Michael Wittmann at Vilers-Bocage.
I started working in a very small spare bedroom. By the time I got to setting up the suspension I moved to a room downstairs that originally housed my model railway. At one point I was working on 4 vehicles in this room. When my twins arrived I built my present workshop. There I have plenty of workspace for collection and building tanks and making parts. I am considering building another small shed for painting and other dusty work.
TYPO (Tigers gun is Kwk 36 and not 33 as per credits.) Sorry.

      I have to say, a lot goes into an Armortek kit. Being scale thickness in aluminium and steel they cannot come cheap. The King Tiger I worked on was a hybrid of Armortek and Mark 1 tanks. The Mark 1 kit was of a very low standard and horrible to work with. Also, I have found the scale and proportions are off. I made my mudguards using measurements from Tiger 131 at Bovington Tank Museum. Fit perfectly on the Armortek. I was asked to make s set for a Mark 1 model and had to go back to the start and make something that would look right.

    • @Cormano980
      @Cormano980 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl yeah, Mark 1 are on the low quality side, but they scratch that 1/6 itch on the budget Ideally is better to get Armortek parts slowly in time and build the better tank On the other hand 3d printing is coming strogly in the picture and will give people cheaper alternatives to get in the hobby There's a guy Wikander on yt who makes pretty amazing models with mostly home depot materials

      So many Armortek Tigers around you can pick up a good built or part built for a lot less than €4000. My dog toiler was half that with all electronic kits including blank firer. No matter the condition they can be stripped back to new condition with some work.

      It is worth looking out for a good used kit if you have space. I started with some 1/16 models and spent a lot trying to upgrade. No comparison. I have not touched 1/16 since getting these. Armortek are best. I have worked on 1/6 scale mark 1 models for a friend and cannot compare. Make sure to stay subscribed, more to come.

    Could you drill a 1mm hole in the turret traverse gear and use a bit of paper clip as a lock pin? I'm assuming the adhesive is used to protect the motor by allowing the gear to shear in the event of the turret jamming against anything whilst rotating. A soft alloy pin might be just as effective and possibly less messy.

    • @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl
      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This turret is really heavy. I have lower back pain at the moment after taking this turret off a few times. A paper clip wouldn’t cope with the stress. I was thinking of fitting a grub screw but didn’t test the hardness of the steel. I have contacted Armortek and was advised that the solution was to clean parts really well and use loctite 638 to retain the gear. I have ordered this and will let you know how this works in the next video.

      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl I hope the back pain clears quickly. I keep forgetting how heavy it is. Loctite is my new favourite company. I've been struggling with engine vibration on my old diesel. Certain nuts kept unscrewing. Someone suggested I use a Loctite formula and I haven't had a problem since. I'm looking forward to the next update.

    • @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl

      It is a card supplied by Armortek but I think it is produced by a company called Benidinni. This came with the vehicle as part of the sound and motion packages. The original owner bought from Armortek with motion, sound, smoker and blank firer. I sold the blank firer a few years back.

      Thank you. A lot more painting and weathering to complete and some details to finish. All of the markings are hand painted. I have made some decals recently for other RC models so will probably make decals for other aspects of the detailing such as the interior. The base has some colour modulation techniques used but really not essential in this scale. I think the models create their own highlights and shadows. Looking forward to getting it outside for some driving and photos. I will cover the painting techniques when painting the early tiger 1, Panzer IV and sdkfz222

    Hi, I was a little confused on how you soldered. Am I right in saying that you applied solder first, joined the two parts then reheated for them to bond? Its something that I want to do on future Armortek models. Good up the good work.

    • @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl
      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s the way I attach the pieces. Otherwise I find it hard to get enough heat to make the joint, just takes a few seconds with a small gas heat gun. Apply some flux also. Use dome small clamps. Most important to keep everything clean for a good joint.

      I’m not an expert metalworker but it’s probably like brazing but with solder instead of welding rods. The other mudguards I show on lathe late tiger was a kit mudguards which I detailed using other components. The kit components back in 2007 were a bit clunky but I think they still use same mudguards components.

    Thank you for taking the time to re-edit the sound. Much appreciated 👍 I've been wondering how much extra weight your upgrades add to the basic set up? Will the additional weight affect the motor or battery life?

    • @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl
      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Regarding the added weight. Won’t make any difference. Most of what I have added in the Early Tiger so far is saving weight. My new turret bin is half the weight of the original. My mudguards in brass are lighter than the steel kit ones. The kit feifel components are heavy white metal and I will replace with a lighter version. The tiger originally was capable of taking a blank firing magazine. This was an extremely heavy item. If I fit my 88mm gun breech and full interior it will still be lighter. So far everything I have added is weight saving. My interior gun enhancements actually balance the gun barrel and reduce the effort required by the motor to operate elevation. There is nothing I could add that the vehicle couldn’t handle.

Plenty of interesting starter projects focused on improving the lathe, making new handles etc. then I started making items for my builds. I am happy with my choice of milling machine but should have went bigger with the lathe. It didn’t take long to start finding uses for the machines but there is quite a bit of outlay on tools to use with the machines.

    • @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl
      @16rctankworkshop-yv8kl 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The turret is the old cast type turret from Armortek and has a nice texture. The new turrets are smooth finish. On hull plates I use a dremel type tool fitted with a round head milling grinder attachment. They tend to come with the dremel kits and nobody knows what to use them on. Just let it bounce over the armour fairly random. After that you can apply some mr surfacer in places.
