Do you write an outline before writing a paper or a chapter? If you do, wondering if you can also document the process in your vlog… ✍🏻

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you! When I'm doing heavy diss work (close readings of theory, writing, etc.) I max out at 2h maybe 3h on a good day. There's actually a study (which I found in the book "Rest") that shows that intellectual workers are at their most productive when they work for 10-20 hours a week and they found that those who worked for 35 hours a week were less productive! I think it really puts things into perspective. Doing more hours doesn't equal doing a good job.

Loved the video! I joined a summer writing group thinking it would help me stay motivated working on a conference paper.....it has not helped. 😂 Sometimes taking a break from the work is a part of the process, because it lets your mind have a chance to recharge.

Multidisciplinary work is so hard because it’s impossible to categorize yourself. But it’s basically impossible to not be multidisciplinary at this point, so I think we will be seeing a shift away from such black and white categorization of work in the near future. You’re just on the front end of that wave.

Great that you were able to make progress on your website even if motivation to re-tackle the diss was elusive!

Watching this vlog inspired me to write a real to-do list for the coming month, and not just cross my fingers that I would get to the things that are important for me. Thanks for showing us the nitty-gritty of managing your process and thinking!

What a wonderful Vlog!! I am so impressed and inspired by your work in progress website! I also have a website for professionalization but you gave me some good ideas and inspiration for other tabs that I can include (for my teaching experience). I hope we get to see the finished product! I also really loved the song choices, especially the one with the lyric "… Will it ever be enough…" I think that is the mantra for every PhD candidate working on their dissertation! Lastly, it was so relatable "Waiting with you" to get feedback from your advisor, feeling "in limbo," and then applying his feedback via notes on what you're going to do next. Really loved this one!

I think moments of reflection in the dissertation are super important. For me, I try to connect it back to my why. Why me? Why this research?

On another note, being late to a meeting even by a couple minutes stresses me out so so so so bad, even though my advisor is chronically late herself! haha Also congrats on the positive feedback on how close you are on that chapter!

Around 21:59 you bring up a great point about the idea of an intellectual community and I am glad this platform is able to give you that especially after COVID I feel like the community that was once there in a general sense is more so lacking now
