Dear Hunter Project
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 ต.ค. 2019
Join us as we bridge the divide between naturalists, hunters, and wildlife managers and explore the natural world together. Our goal is to reconnect you with wildlife, share our love for all things wild, and encourage you to challenge your old mindset and adopt a new mentality towards wildlife management. Together, we will forge our own path and define what the future of wildlife management is. And then, we can finally answer the question, "Why do we manage wildlife?"
Because it's our way of life.
Because it's our way of life.
Thankful - A Deer Hunting Short Film
It's been a while since we've put together one of these short films. They're our bread and butter - using hunting and wildlife as a vehicle to tell stories and deliver messages.
This one is about growth, reflection, and gratitude. Give it a watch and if you connect with it let us know. This is a time of year for which we should all be thankful.

The Give For Grouse Initiative - Giving Ruffed Grouse a Future
มุมมอง 330ปีที่แล้ว
Ruffed Grouse, The King of Spring, the Bellwether of All Forest Wildlife, has a very fragile future. According to the Ruffed Grouse Society, their populations have declined at least 50% throughout the Eastern United States in the last 20 years and current projections indicate numbers will be zero in our lifetime. So please, join us as we introduce the Give for Grouse Initiative and work to brin...

Ruffed Grouse and Forest Management in Virginia
Please take that disrespectful cap off.
This is very true 😢 I’m trying to remove a ground cover disaster that the prior owners of my house planted and it has taken OVER!!!! I can’t kill it. I used vinegar 30% and it worked for a year then this year it reappeared even bigger 😂
Why not just use the bush for tea and just trim them? Also see tons of stilt grass?
What is the best herbicides to use?
No Herbicides! You're on - Don't recommend channel.
By definition of the term, a native cannot be invasive. It's important not to abuse the language because doing so eliminates the meaning of words. This is a bad message sent badly.
Invasive, perhaps not. Aggressive, yes. I'm curious how a message of encouraging diverse plant communities rather than monocultures is a bad message, though?
Teaching from your own mistakes. Mad respect
Goldenrods are the king of caterpillar species in many different areas. In Northern Illinois, Goldenrod supports 112 different types of caterpillar species ☺️ Excellent native keystone that is definitely worth planting!
But you are also non-native in that land...
Does that mean it’s ok to degrade the land? What are you saying here?
I have lots of grouse in my land. I accidentally discovered it while deer hunting last year. I had the curiosity to shoot one & cooked it. It was so delicious. Just like chicken. As I write, I hear them drumming around my cabin. I’m located 3 miles north of the Minnesota border. I came across your video presentation & needs to know more about how to keep them on my land. Any such presentation would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much!
Native Shrubs. The Rodney Dangerfield of habitat elements-they just can’t get any respect. Yet, they ask for very little-just sunlight, and yet, yield so much-food, cover, flowers, and beauty. I TSI for shrubs!
I love that! You're exactly right, they don't get talked about often enough, but are so valuable to wildlife.
But 100% agree with your message. Save the bluebirds
The box is too low and it’s not protected by a baffle. Raccoon buffet
It's the Predators!
They are definitely the leading cause of ruffed grouse mortality!
When I was growing up, we had all kinds of grouse around home the turkey population has taken over and killed most of the grouse babies before they even get a chance to live the state of Virginia should’ve stepped in, but now we have no grouse at all shame on you state of Virginia shame on you Greed of money for your turkey license has killed the grouse population.
We're certainly working to bring back ruffed grouse on our property and raise awareness about the species and it's situation. Every little bit we can do helps!
beutiful
Thank you!

The Paulonia actually is native to North America. The last of them died out and then the tree was reintroduced. If they try to grow in a forest with very tall trees, they will die out from light starvation. It is like almost all invasive species, they have quite useful properties, but need maintained.
I did not know that!
I have heavily wooded steep acreage in WNC and want to manage it for wildlife diversity. If I thin the canopy and create openings how are invasive species controlled like privet and multiflora rose?
Herbicide will be your most efficient and effective method of control.
Good ideas, except spraying chemicals to poison vegetation and harm wildlife and humans is not good. Think cancer. Manage your woods naturally.
You guys rock, seriously! There is hope in the 21st century.
Thanks Richard!
No buckthorn there?
Thankfully not! My main invasives are autumn olive, tree of heaven, japanese barberry, sericea lespedeza, japanese stiltgrass, and princess tree. I've already got my hands full!
You did an awesome job making this. So many aspects I feel the same way. The process and feel of the shot, walking slowly and enjoying the woods, and especially taking a doe. I respect the animals and it’s getting harder to harvest them but I do it. I really don’t understand why this hasn’t got more views but I guess that has to do with TH-cam itself and what people are looking for. Please keep producing your video ideas they are great productions. Thank you!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words! I think a lot of hunters can connect with this film and message, maybe more than they realize and I'm glad it resonated with you. It's important that we tell these stories and convey these feelings that I think all hunters can related to!
Too many feel goods in this video.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?
@@DearHunterProject I rewatched most of the video. Im primarily whitetail focused so alot bias. I think alot of the feel good feeling comes from the music but when it got into song birds, oak leaf litter, nematodes, etc you really lost me. Your knowledge is outstanding but this just isn't the channel for me. It said deer hunter project TSI work so it got my attention but then got off track for my liking.
@@makeyourownluck5822 I appreciate you taking the time to watch and for your feedback. I'm primarily whitetail focused as well, but even in that process am mindful of every decision I make and how it effects all wildlife. Whitetails and grouse are my focus but I'm not managing specifically for them. We should manage for entire ecosystems rather than singular species. Also, we're the Dear (with an E) Hunter project 😉 This is our message to all hunters.
Disagree with having an equal distribution of species in a forest stand. Species composition should directly reflect the landowners objective. I refuse to retain hard maple when managing for deer... 🤷♂️
I agree but we should also be mindful of how the decisions we make when managing for a singular species impact the entire native ecosystem. I have an extreme excess of tulip poplar on my property and cut them almost indiscriminately but also acknowledge the value they provide poplars and as a result make it a point to leave several standing for that reason alone.
You have touched on an important issue.i will renew my animal control license.and go through some of the farmers losing crops land get permissions.i am 73 and retired from trapping .But I am in a restart mode.
I'm new to trapping as well! Just buying a license and having that number register to the total number of trappers makes a difference. Excited to learn the art better and see the difference it can make on my property.
cut the dam background music!!!!!!
Noted!
🤘🏿🫡😍
I was intrigued ever since I flushed my first Ruffed Grouse at 12 years old while rabbit hunting with my beagle and Dad. I believe they need to totally close the season for at least a couple years and as far as in Pa. Quit introducing more predators.
Definitely stealing lots of ideas! I'm not a hunter, but connect with your love of wildlife and ecosystem regeneration.
Thank you! It means a lot that we're able to convey our message and connect with everyone.
What's scary about looking at surrounding properties in assessing your own property is the unknown about who will sell the surrounding properties to home developers who will clear cut everything.
Absolutely. Land is being gobbled up and developed faster than ever these days.
Great job.
Thank you!
Growing miscanthus is a good idea. We share our experience on the channel, subscribe ;)
This looks EXACTLY like my property in SC and I am having to do the same thing soon. Curious to see the results. How well will the native stuff respond with the canopy opened up but years of pine litter on forest floor? I don't have option of burning, will the sunlight still get good growth on forest floor??
It might take a year or two for the plants to respond to the sunlight but nature always finds a way. I expect an explosion of vegetation in this area.
How do you safely get the line attached to the top first? Wrap a rope around the tree? And then use the safety line as your primary after? I'm looking for an up and down / arrive and leave video.
Gota make the first climb or bring a big extension Ladder
Lineman’s rope
Great short film. True art with a great message.
Thanks Lee!
Is there not a particular direction the log needs to run? ie: north south. I think I read that in a bird field Guide decades ago.
Really good info here sir. Thank you!
I'm majoring in forestry with a concentration in wildlife management. My question is, are all wildlife managers law enforcement officers? Also, are there multiple career paths for someone majoring in wildlife management other than law enforcement? Thank you!
We are talking about small clearcuts in this video, not 3 square kilometre clear cuts every 4 kilometres away from each other, causing floods along with death of wildlife
Yes Sir 🙏🏼🫡 Plant Native! 🌱💚🪶
Do you need to fill in water or rain does all the job?
If there's good run off and it's sealed well (with a liner or bentonite) rain water is plenty enough and will hold water long into drought! I've filled mine up to "get them started" but have never had to fill them up because they ran dry.
@@DearHunterProject Thanks
Interesting. I just attended a workshop on making biochar and using adding it to various ferments to make it an amendment to fertilize crops. The person giving the workshop was talking about how this particular tree is being grown in California to make into biochar. It seems it has some special genetics that make it ideal for that purpose. Just goes to show you that invasive is somewhat subjective and depends on what you can do and want to do with it.
I've heard the same about Princess Tree and Tree of Heaven, but I disagree about invasive species being subjective. Just because it has utility doesn't justify it being on the landscape when it displaces native plant communities that our wildlife depend on.
Well said. It is our responsibility!
Yes sir!
Thank you for stepping up and showing what needs done. Erich and Cody are great at what they do! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Casey!
Keep spreading the message guys. Thank you!!

Yes sir, send me an email at dearhunterpodcast(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll send you a link to our store.
I used to go grouse hunting all the time. I don't try now because I never see them anymore. I guess I was part of the problem. 😢
There's not one single reason for their decline or any one person's fault, but one person's effort and contribution can make a positive difference!
I cut Red Maple on my property every winter. They create good winter browse and can be cut up for campfire wood.
Same here! They make great winter browse as you said, good mineral stumps during the spring and summer, and I love red maple for fall and spring firewood. Splits easy too!
