Growing up, (SE Ohio), grouse would scare the crap out of me often as I ran through the woods. Same property... haven't seen or heard in my adult life. Sad.
It's been a sad decline to watch happen. Even more so that it's happening on our watch. But by spreading the word, raising awareness, and implementing and improving habitat we can make a difference!
Sad to see the Ohio DNR listing the Ruffed Grouse as Common instead of affording it protected status. I saw one at our old family farm when I was a kid, but haven't seen one since. We need to protect our native species.
Listing it as "protected" initially sounds like a good idea, but once we take them out of the hunting season regulations, they lose immediate value. Indiana did the same thing and within 2 years ruffed grouse were listed as endangered in the state. When wildlife has value it is protected and nothing gives the ruffed grouse more value than keeping it as a hunt able species.
Really good info here sir. Thank you!
What a great tribute to the Ruffed Grouse.
Thanks Kurt! Glad you enjoyed it my friend.

Is there not a particular direction the log needs to run? ie: north south. I think I read that in a bird field

Thanks for the response, I hadn't thought about it that way. I just hope they stay around for a long time.
