"You can't be mediocre at a bunch of different languages and frameworks and expect to get hired". For most of the jobs I have been hired to, they didn't really care what language or framework I used on previous jobs. The interview process was generally a system design question and a DSA problem but they were agnostic to the chosen language.

no one is hiring developers because the new thing is platform engineering. you got to keep moving. it used to be that people didnt even know what a filesystem was and couldnt turn on their own computer at work i had to come around and find their lost files. now everyone got a computer in their pocket. you think anybody is going to hire someone who claims they are tech support with 20 years experience helping users? lol users help themselves now. do the new thing... platform engineering, or edge computing, robotics, AR and VR. 2 years from now itll be something else. maybe computer vision. jr developer is a retro term now like assembly language programmer. anyone can be a jr developer.

all you need to know is more about something than everyone else does when that thing is needed. and thats easy to do because things are always changing. so your first job is to presume what that change is going to be. sounds hard but its really not. hard is only your perspective of yourself. you think you have this mountain of things to learn from scratch. but no its not like that. let say when AR comes out for example Hololens. You know other people going to have trouble justifying buying a hololens. so for you thats an opportunity.. do some demos, take some tutorials. cook up an ambitious project and then start thinking about how youll build it. then 2 weeks in just go on an interview. nobody is going to be competing with you and nobody will know to ask you tough questions. and then when you get on the job theyll be no agile and no project managers bugging you. its R and D. you milk that for a while until the market changes and people start learning then you jump off that thing but not spending any more time with it.. just start learning a new thing before others. during this time the job will be mad.. your performance is almost down to zero. you keep trying to jam this new thing into the mix. youll get fired. collect all 6 months of unemployment insurance and casually keep learning the new thing that got you fired and then when the insurance run out claim you have 6 months experience in the new thing.. rinse repeat. im 50 been doing this for 30 years. im basically been retired 15/30 years i been in the workforce wife hasnt worked a day after we got married we been married 13 years. house is paid off. everybody else takes 2 weeks a year while im off 6 months after every year. i know the game!!! And the most slickest and bueatiful thing is that when you go interview for that totally new and different thing.. lets say the next thing is robotics.. all your seemingly unrelated work is totally related right. AR and Robotics share a commonality.. both are spatial computing. but then your next job doing the same tactic is VR.. seems unrelated but again its not.. robotics and VR share Cad model design. you could even get into mechanical engineering for example mechatronics after that.. all over the places right.. as long as you just learn a little off the top of the new thing.. you just ride the crest of the waves dont try to surf.. you are more like algea or seaweed dont think too highly of yourself. and its fun there are different parts of the ocean some animals live in the dark at the bottom.. like those people have to watch computers in the middle of the night shift. there theres all the people we talking about on this thread.. the majority of climbers.. trying to surf the waves.. then theres the algae seaweed like me.. with no effort im always getting paid and always free too.

coding is so hard if you only have average intelligence. if you find math hard in HS, my university will tell you you can still pursue computer science or software coding but it will be a hard life and maybe a waste of 4 years in college after finishing the course with hardships than fun and ease. they dont encourage IQ but you really need at least 120 to survive the IT industry or be stuck at the bottom

As a fellow software engineer, I agree with most of the points here, but I disagree that specialists (like React engineers) are more valuable than generalists. I do think companies BELIEVE they are more valuable and may pay them higher salaries in some cases, but in my decade+ of experience in the industry, the best engineers I’ve worked with have all been generalists. There is something to be said about bringing a wide variety of skills to the table to tackle a complicated problem. I find that specialists often have too narrow of a mindset and tend to get lost whenever something drifts slightly out of their comfort zone. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. I have no experience with coding bootcamps, but I’d be surprised if they actually produce well-rounded engineers at all. There is simply no way you can learn all the skills necessary to be successful in just a few months.

The market "pivots". You need completely different people (strategically planning). You need interdisciplinary people [IQ/ EQ/ LQ] and with a "scientific mind" (this is only possible for about 10% of society [IQ] - "theory of mind"; algorithms "lose" only to them ~ prof. Daniel Kahneman). "Talentism" ~ prof. Klaus Schwab But only a few can afford it, so only the largest and smartest companies have entered this path (hiring others MAKES NO SENSE). So only they will appreciate it because they are looking for it (and the rest don't understand any of it :D) Ciaooo... ;)

  • @Jenkkimie

When I started my software engineering studies, the markets were still relatively booming. Companies were seeking out juniors for summer jobs and longer if they could make up a deal. Back then you did not even have to be a graduate and you could get a full-time job before even getting your degree ready. Now it does not matter if you have a degree and 2-years of experience. Most companies are only looking for senios with 5 years or more experience in the industry. But it's not the tech companies per say, it's that the markets have shifted towards client based system and tech companies are unable to persuade their clients to look past job experience and instead focus on individual talents.

Compensation tops out pretty quickly for most engineers. You could be making $150k after 5 years or 20 years, unless you are willing to move into lead or manager roles. Also, compensation very much depends on industry and location. People flexing $500k+ TC on the Blind are outliers, giving noobs and outsiders the wrong impression. A handful of big tech companies pay top dollar, but those companies have tremendous scale and earn obscene revenue for their small headcount. There is intense competition for these limited number of roles. Most engineers are "average" and will work in average roles.

If I need to be an extrovert to be software developer, why not choose project management, business analysis, or jobs in general that you don’t really need technical skills and sadly the majority get a better pay than developers. I don’t know about USA however in Europe that is true. A developer in Greece where I am from, gets paid 1200-1500€ and a project manager 1500-2000€ per month.

3 things to help: You have to be geographically mobile. Look everywhere with a decent cost of living, the opportunities are not necessarily close to you. There's a 3 percent chance of getting an interview from an online application. Polish a good generic resume, do 2 to 3 applications a day, 10 to 20 per week, and screw the FANG jobs. They're more hassle than they are worth. Don't be too picky, if they're a highly rated company on job boards and they're cool in the interview, give them a go. You don't have to stay there forever, but just get your foot in the door somewhere and stay a few years.

You are actually right about this when it comes to IT. People dont seem to understand the complexity of it, and assume this to be a generalized career when it comes to technology. It’s hard to find a job in IT that doesnt have on-call.. Even though It’s great to WFH, but getting called during odd hours does become challenging. It takes a few minutes for my brain to kick in when someone calls me about a critical ticket at 3AM. Companies get you when they offer you a good salaried offer, but from all my time keeping over the years, I felt cheated from my work-life balance, free time for myself and should be compensated for working those odd hours and/or OT. Unfortunately , salaried pay keeps the company safe, while I lose time for myself and compensation for giving my time to the company. Currently, there have been tech layoffs, and im still searching for a job that does not have on-call. Good luck to me on that LOL

Going into this field has honestly been a mistake I deeply regret due to the severe lack of realistic jobs, keyword realistic, because interviewing for 2 months across 6 interviews for a single role is on the far end of the spectrum, and just not feasible when you're applying to 1000 different job listings. In 2023 I had multiple interview cycles that completely fizzled out came time for an offer due to the hiring team hiring somebody more senior than me; like literally I got an email mentioning an offer, and then immediately after they tell me they went with some older dude that's been coding in Objc since I was still pissing the bed. And then there was this home care company that led me on for months with a maybe job offer, just to tell me they can't bring anybody on right now, now they have million dollar ads all across the city today. And 2024 has been even worse, no interviews, no nothing. I was a lead for a crappy startup which I got paid $0 for, and almost died from stress induced sickness a couple months ago, I left that shit because who wants to deal with people that don't care if you die from working 120hrs a week + complain, and pay you $0. I have a tremendous amount of skills and prior FT experience but I'm just so tired of leetcoding, working on side projects, and applying to jobs man, ever since late 2022. I graduated last December and my MSc already feels like a paper weight. Honestly, if you don't get lucky or get in through a school program, it's just a terrible time finding a junior role. I'm in NYC, but I'm leaving immediately once I get something because there's NOTHING in the northeast. Rant over :)
