Dolphins, Running from a Thunderstorm, and Racing other Boats.
This one has it all in one short video! I get to sail with a large pod of dolphins, run away from a thiunderstorm and finish with a race into Falmouth. I had so much fun that day, one of my best sails to date.

    Hai I just stumbled on your channel,so strange that some channels just dont have the vieuws like other similar ones. I see on a brief overview that you have really some issues with forecasts,is this an lets say last 2 years issue,thats because i think with the climate change ,that the models are no longer accurate these days,deu to the rapidly changing climate?

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure if it’s climate change but the issue is really just with the inshore forecast, the met office do a great job of the over land forecasts. A lot of the issue is down to topography of the coastline. The west coast UK has more coastline than the eastern seaboard of the US. There’s so many islands and coves it’s probably very difficult to forecast. However, even when miles from shore, where the wind is consistent, they somehow get it wrong. Often by up to 180 degrees. 😅

    Here is SE NSW Australia, I use PW with great success. Our AU met office does a pretty good job on a 3 day wind, wave and weather forecast but PW is better over longer periods. Ironically for you, one of the models PW uses here is the UKMO, and its does a reasonable job of forecasting our weather in this region! The ECMWF model is very good and best for 5-6 days forecasts. Your issues with UKMO in your geographical area are repeated endlessly in many sailing vids. I think you are in one of the most difficult forecasting zones in Europe. Btw, sound issues in this episode, and muffled possibly due to jacket collar blocking voice? Best

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ll be interested to see how things pan out over the course of the season. I agree though, it probably is a difficult area to forecast for, and the met office do a great job with forecasting weather over land, it’s that 12 miles offshore bit that seems to cause them problems. The sound issues were down to me not paying enough attention to recording speech out of the wind. A small oversight on my part 😂

      Hi Richie, thanks, it’s great to be out and about again. I’m having a break from big adventures this summer and traveling round from festival to festival this season. Currently at Dartford Music Festival. It’s nice to not have the pressure of having to move every day. The wind displays are via an app called NMEAremote and a little box of tricks that broadcasts my NMEA data over the boat Wi-Fi. Also get depth displayed directly in navionics and AIS displayed in navionics via an app called Boat Beacon. One of the best and simplest upgrades I have made to be honest.

    What size is your headsail ? Looks 110%? I recently got a brand new heady at a very good price, not originally made for my boat, and it’s 110% but higher cut than yours. Its seems ok but I am used to a bigger 130% furling genoa. Your boat with the current heady seems to perform well, hoping mine will in decent breezes with the smaller sail.

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it’s 110% and she sails really well. When I balance the sails properly she will stay on a heading without the autopilot on as long as the seas aren’t too big which is really handy. I have a cruising chute as well for light winds, but it’s such a faff to get up I don’t use it often.

    • @dreamtimesv

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have calm conditions, visiting the puffins on Skomer is a must, they will be arriving to breed right now. If it’s not calm don’t cut through the sounds off St David, stick to deep water and avoid the overfalls, I went through there year before last in F8/9 and it was punishing, there’s a video if it, the dark side of boat life I think. Don’t forget cardigan bay is a firing range, so check for no go areas. Ynys Llanddwyn is a beautiful anchorage, highly recommended. From there you have the choice of the straits transit or round the outside of Anglesey. The straits require impeccable timing to transit the swellies, but it’s great fun and good navigation practice. Worth it for the experience.

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, I wouldn’t recommend any of the cruising guides, they have proved to be a waste of money. Any information in them can be found easily online or in the almanac. However, if you are sailing in western Scotland, I would say the Antares charts are a must have! They have allowed me to go to places that are marked as unsurveyed or obstructed on the normal charts with confidence. They open up a world of possibilities for anchorages in remote and stunningly beautiful places that you won’t find in the cruising guides.

    Great to see your journey into Dover. Looked like some lively sailing at the start and loved the accompanying music - very dramatic! Hope all the boat work is going well 🤞

      Was really cool sailing in company, I’ve done loads solo with nobody else around which is awesome, but sailing solo in company is an another level better. Both boats are so well matched as well.

    Morning Brian, nice vid and hope all is well at home. 3.04 mad fcker in boat behind ye had full sails! Meant to ask when you were checking in and out of shengen did you need to show your boats papers and UK Vat cert? to start the 2 year clock on the temporary boat residence?

    • @sailingonadream
      @sailingonadream 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Brian? 😂 Only had to show papers in Holland, none of the other countries have a damn. Although I did have an advantage with no AIS broadcast, so they couldn’t come find me on anchor. The VAT papers give your boat 18 months in the EU. But they did say just leave the EU and rip it up to get a new one when you go back.
