These videos from Mike Mackowski demonstrate how to build scale models of historical spacecraft. Mike also offers guidebooks for modelers on these topics (see spaceinminiature.com).
Salyut 7, Part 5
This episode focuses on the painting the green blankets. I like to use a “pure” color (no custom mixes as they are difficult to reproduce). But the underside of the main Salyut module was a challenge, as photos showed a wide range of colors. I wound up with a light metallic green using a custom mix (plus some dry brushing and a wash) as I had nothing close. I also painted the TKS VA module, with all its tiny stripes.

มุมมอง 149หลายเดือนก่อน
Finally I get to some real painting, with a base of Tamiya gloss white and gesso to simulate the blankets. The first color is the copper-orange stripes on the aft end of the Salyut 7 core module. That was a 50-50 mix of Vallejo Rust and Copper.
Salyut 7, Part 3
มุมมอง 213หลายเดือนก่อน
This episode focuses on the work done to accurize the TKS module, mostly on adding the eight prominent fuel tanks. I also show some tests of using gesso to simulate thermal blankets at this small scale. There is progress on the Salyut core, and I am getting close to actual painting.
Salyut 7, Part 2
มุมมอง 136หลายเดือนก่อน
This video shows some of the work needed to make the surface details more accurate. Converting Mir modules to Salyut 7’s versions requires removing many existing details and adding different ones.
Salyut 7, Part 1
มุมมอง 3542 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve long been fascinated with the Soviet space program, and over the years have build models of Buran/Energiya, the LK lander, a Soyuz T, ASTP, and a very detailed Mir. But I never did a Salyut space station, so I decided now is the time. This project will take the Revell 1/144 Mir kit and some elements from RealSpace Models to make a Salyut 7 with a TKS (Cosmos 1443) and Soyuz attached. The M...
Saturn IB, Part 2
มุมมอง 4785 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the second and last installment of videos of my Saturn IB build. Sorry if it is a little long, but I spend some time showing the extensive masking required and some other tips. The kit is actually pretty good, with no major parts issues (other than a few picky accuracy nits). I had put off building it in fear of the paint job, but it really wasn’t that bad. Thanks for watching.
Saturn IB, Part 1
มุมมอง 4125 หลายเดือนก่อน
This build is of another kit that I have owned for ages and have been putting off building. It’s the 1/144 scale Airfix Saturn IB representing the Apollo 7 launch vehicle. I expected some accuracy issues and a finicky paint job, and this first video shows the basic building process up to the painting part.
Eclipse Time Lapse
มุมมอง 1296 หลายเดือนก่อน
I accompanied a space artist group to Texas to view the solar eclipse. The clouds prevented us from seeing but a few glimpses of totality but we did experience the drop in temperature and the spooky transitions in and out of darkness. This video (no sound) shows those transitions.
The Horizon Model Contest
มุมมอง 1567 หลายเดือนก่อน
Last fall I saw that Horizon Models had an online contest for folks who built one of their rocket model kits. I entered some photos of my Mercury-Atlas built and was selected the winner for 2023. This video shows what I received from them in early March 2024.
ISS Astronaut, Part 4
มุมมอง 2077 หลายเดือนก่อน
This final installment of this video series covers painting the small details, combining all the subassemblies, adding putty to the articulated shoulder and hand joints, building the base, and finally adding the stickers. I did paint some off-white in the folds of the suit to add a bit of depth but it is very subtle. I think the final result looks pretty cool, but all the fussy putty and sculpt...
ISS Astronaut, Part 3
มุมมอง 2258 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve got the first few cycles of Apoxie Sculpt, acrylic putty, sanding and primer completed. It gives me an idea of what spots still need work. I also added fabric strips using narrow masking tape. The work stand base is also getting some primer and clean-up. It’s starting to look less like a toy.
ISS Astronaut, Part 2
มุมมอง 2088 หลายเดือนก่อน
After determining a suitable pose for the articulated arms and legs, I glued them in place and applied Aves Apoxie Sculpt to fill in the toy-like joints. This will take several rounds as I need to paint white primer to see how well the joints are being disguised.
ISS Astronaut, Part 1
มุมมอง 3588 หลายเดือนก่อน
In my quest to build kits that I have been trying to avoid (due to complicated assembly, size, etc.), I dug out the Bandai “ISS Space Suit” kit. I bought this at an IPMS Nats in 2012 and knew it was articulated and would require a lot of filler and putty to eliminate the “toy” look. Follow along and we’ll see what it takes to accomplish that.
Solar Max Part 3
มุมมอง 1389 หลายเดือนก่อน
This episode wraps up the project with a scratchbuilt antenna mast and new solar arrays. After adding a couple of details to the top of the instrument module, all the pieces were joined together. The solar arrays came out a bit tilted due to the square mounting tubes being squeezed into a layer of soft foam board, making precision alignment tricky. Overall, it looks like Solar Max and I’m happy...
Solar Max, Part 2
มุมมอง 1009 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I show the changes I needed to make on the old MMS bus including making a new round interface ring and grapple fixture. Then you’ll see how I finished the instrument module and applied foil and some foiled electronics panels. Part 3 will wrap it up.
Nice build, turned out great, and thanks so much for posting this vid, it has helped me alot with my build. You did a much better job on the escape tower than I could manage haha!
Another great video. Love this one 😁
What really impresses me is how your attention to color accuracy isn't stopping you from actually finishing this project. You review available reference material, and make good, educated choices, where others might be tempted to put their own projects on hold until they find that "one more final reference photo" to get that "just-right shade of (in this instance) green." Excellent work, Mike! 10th Like.
A week or so ago I saw where an ISS astronaut posted a photo of the two Soyuz craft currently docked there. The recent arrival was dark gray-green and the one that arrived six months ago was a pale shade of something (green or gray - hard to tell). That was a reassuring bit of evidence that my study of Salyut 7 photos from nearly 40 years ago showed the same phenomenon. Although right now that model project is on hold as I spent some time on a paid commission project (Gemini IV) and am now on a 3 week trip to Colorado.
All those shades of green...yikes! Looking good. 👍
keep learning more about how complicated heat transfer is. i still regret dropping a 200 level physics: thermodynamics class in college (went into medicine and just couldnt get it to fit my schedule). seems like even on earth as room temps, that thermal emissivity is still the dominate mechanism of passive (non forced air) heat transfer, thats why some AL heat sinks for computers are painted black despite black paint having an insulation value. for some reason everything ive found for home insulation and r values are still based on heat conduction. feel like if i ever own a home or do a remodel, ill buy a bunch of "space blankets" since theyre so cheap and stick them in the walls before i add insulation. started covering my 12v dc fridges with aluminum tape, which reduces their power consumption by something like 30-40%. can get the AL foil tape for like 1-2 bucks per roll now from china. i have a weird hobby of searching the chinease amazon for days trying to find new tapes lol.
😂what scale is the kit please ? Thank you
This is based on the 1/144 scale Revell kit. That was in the notes with the first video. Thanks.
Looking really cool! And again...Gesso is not pronounced Guess-o, it is pronounced...Jeh-sow or Jess-o. Years of art classes, and dictionary pronounces it JEH-SO. Yes, I am a word Nazi.
Coming along very nicely, Mike! With regards to the color of the insulation blanket; I remember reading a commentary by Mat Irvine who noted that Soviet color film tended to "bias" towards green, and Western color film tended to "bias" towards blue. Mr. Irvine was commenting on the colors of the Soyuz launch vehicle (which he determined was actually grey and not green) but I suspect this applies to all Soviet sourced photos. So I wouldn't loose any sleep - much less break my building stride - worrying about it. Close enough is good enough. And I say this as a recovered sufferer of AMS. Thanks for sharing this video on your progress! 6th Like.
My problem is that I see a dark green Soyuz docked to Salyut 7 with light green/gray blankets. There is a real difference, not just film issues, or it would affect all blankets equally.
@@spacecitymike That's not really a problem if your solution is to match-up the different colors as best as you can, and not let the difference interfere with the build itself. In our hobby especially it's far too easy to obsess over details that prevent the completion of our projects. I forget who it was in IPMS Gateway who said it back in the day, but their observation states that, "More reference material leads to confusion rather than clarity," or words to that effect. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished model!
Dear sir, i wanna send all my scale model collection to you... I am sure you will take good care of them... Let me know if you're interested
Thank you for the offer but I am actually trying to reduce my collection. I am retired and may need to downsize soon. Where do you live and what sort of models do you have?
@@spacecitymike 😪 I will share a blogger link soon
Another great build. Thanks for the brilliant videos. Are the Ben Gunter drawings you mention or the ones you have created available?
The Salyut drawings are by Dietrich Haesler and are available in SIM 4.1. Thanks for the nice comments.
Looking pretty cool. Took a few years of art classes in college, and "Gesso" was always prononced "Jess-o"
Great work, Mike! I'm definitely going to keep your gesso method for simulating thermal blankets in mind, should I ever need it! 7th Like.
Thank you Michael, this is very informative. I will refer to this video when I get to some of my "real space" models.
Excellent attention to detail, Mike - but without any trace of AMS obsession that could bog-down this interesting project! Keep up the good work! 2nd Like.
Who makes this model?
@@christopherbrown5338 The kit is from RealSpace Models
@@spacecitymike Thank you. Do you know if they still make them? I'm having trouble finding a 1:48 scale CSM
@@christopherbrown5338 I think so. Check their website.
Beautiful job! Where did you get the kit?
It’s an out of production kit from Eagles Talon
@@spacecitymike thanks Michael
It is good to see a new project, I have enjoyed many of your older videos over the last few months. I subscribed to the channel after watching your Saturn I build. I have also just purchased your new Saturn V book from CultTVman. I have the Dragon kit to try to figure out where the small components go!
It looks like you're off to a very good start, Mike. And I remember that Soyuz TM you built from the Revell 1/96th scale "Apollo/Soyuz Test Project" kit that you showed at an IPMS Gateway meeting back in the day. I'm looking forward to your finished model! 20th Like.
I recall that day from here in Arkansas, we were about 85% coverage so not as dark but still rather eerie. New Subscriber here, found you on Modellers without Borders.
Thanks for the comment. I just discovered the Modellers without Borders group. Rather eclectic bunch and we'll see where they go.
Superb craftsmanship Mike! I always considered the 1B the sexiest Apollo booster!! It’s classic in the booster design of that wonderful era! Hope to see that Saturn 5 soon and the Atlas Agena build up !! I just bought one a few months ago!
Beautiful! As I wrote before, a very rare kit now days. Very nice build Mike.
Nicely done Mike! Thanks for sharing your build.
Looks sharp!
Great work Michael! Thank you for sharing
This looks excellent, Mike! There's nothing like a classic, B&W rocket, and no "Royal Road" to applying masking tape for a sharp paint job! It's also nice to see that Airfix updated the C/SM to a Block 2 with the correct diameter. With your extra accurizing and scratch building, you've transformed this classic kit into a contest winning, museum piece. Thanks for sharing! 12th Like
Excellent video. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out and what other modifications you make. I didnt realsie the engines didnt have the extra tubing on this version so you live and learn. Do you know at what point they where removed?
This review has a lot of info: www.starshipmodeler.com/real/sp_sat1b.htm The shields (aspirators?) over the outer engines were deleted after AS-202, as were the turbopump exhaust stubs for the inner engines (the 4 strakes) as the later S-1B stage inner engines had the turbopumps exhaust into the centre between the 4 engines. Also check this out: heroicrelics.org/info/saturn-i-and-ib/saturn-i-ib-turbine-exhaust.html
Hi Mike. A very hard kit to get hold of. Getting the old kit with the block I CSM is possible, the kit you have is as rare as hen's teeth, where did you get it? I had to buy the old kit, and a Saturn V with a block II CSM to complete mine. I used the New Ware mod kit to modify mine, Tomas' work is always first class. I'm trying to find another so I can build Apollo I, using New Ware's Apollo I mod kit.
I have the newer version with the corrected Block II CSM. I have had the kit for many years. New Ware makes good stuff. I have the RealSpace Models Apollo CSM/SLA upgrade resin kit, but decided not to use it.
@@spacecitymike I bought the RealSpace CSM/SLA as well, I was quite disappointed with it. I thought it was poorly cast and would have needed a lot of work to fix it.
@@LegioXXVV Yeah, the RealSpace CSM/SLA is a little rough.
Looking good, Mike! This will be VERY impressive when it's finished! 14th Like.

Them pesky clouds. It was still a strange event.
Mike that’s great! I have built all their kits… waited decades for 1/72 plastic Mercury and Redstone boosters! I hope they move onto Gemini Titan next.
Way to go, Mike! If Horizon liked what you submitted for their contest; wait 'till they see your other models! 24th like.
Super job! Always enjoy your builds. Thanks for sharing
Congratulations Mike. Well deserved. Picked up a copy of the Atlas-Agena last week. Looks good. Greetings from Australia!
Well done! 👍🏻
How nice! 👏
Well done Mike!
Congrats Mike!
I’m so impressed by your build of the ISS Astronaut!!! You took this kit to such a height… no pun intended!! I do enjoy your videos so much! I have learned so many techniques From each of them! Your booklets have been at the ready for all my real space builds! Thanks for sharing! Bernie
May I use you comments on my website as endorsements? Thanks, Mike
Off topic question ....sorta. Can you tell me what part of the Apollo 16 craft this photo depicts commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AS16-120-19238_(21995442825).jpg I build mostly cars, some tanks and planes every now and then. I would like to scratch build a LIM. A tweet on X tried to say this is an unknown object...I think its simply part of the ship. Thanks.
Nice work Michael! Looks really great so far. Thank you for sharing
Pretty cool!
LMK when you are ready to part with it. Great piece! And as always, great job sir!
Iteration after iteration. Putty, sand, putty, sand, primer.... Thanks Mike.
You can do it! 👍🏻
Appreciate this series Mike as I have one of these kits in my stash as well and have been wondering how to attack it. I like how you kept in your full process with the sculpt as I’m about to use that product on another project and don’t have much experience with sculpting
I have had this kit tucked away for some time and just started to work on it last month. All finished except fitting the wiring in the back pack. I will wait to see how you tackle yours. I am really impressed with the kit overall. I enjoy your page, been a space nut my whole life (66 years). keep up the good work.
What scale is the astronaut?
This is a 1/10th scale kit
Never have seen this kit before. I know, cuz I would have bought one.
