Actually, both of those large wires are “positive”…. The solenoid acts as an on/off switch to control power going to the starter. When the key is turned, if all other tests are passed ( like being in neutral), then the solenoid is energized from the wires coming in the bottom, and this allows the lugs behind the large threaded bolts to “connect”, allowing energy to pass to the starter. Shorting those poles with your jumper wire ( a screwdriver will also work) does essentially the same thing, just be careful with the sparks!

Were you hearing a slight hum, I'm guessing from the fuel pump when you turned the ignition? Or nothing at all? I got a slight hum but no crank trying to figure it out.

I have a question about where you launched your boat. I usually use the other boat launch and there’s no place to wash down your boat when you’re done. I just got a bigger boat and I’m planning on going out of coast guard in Monterey but was wondering if there’s a wash station there. I know that Santa Cruz marina does but that’s too far since I live in Gilroy now and it’s just easier to head to Monterey to fish. Thanks

Crab snare traps are totally illegal in Florida. You get caught, your gear will be confiscated and you will get a hefty fine.

I just tried this on a mercury 150 2019 motor and bingo. Work like a charm. I just crimp the metal rings on the end so wouldn't keep burning my wire. My solenoid and starter is one piece. I'm no mechanic but will try to replace once it comes in. Hopefully I can do a full video and give you a shout out on the wire trick.

I appreciate him making this video, but here are a couple things to be cleared up. The solenoid does not send a signal, it allows 12 volts to pass to the starter for the duration of the key being turned. the contacts on the solenoid are not negative and positive... by jumpering with the wire, you are allowing the 12v circuit to complete, thus powering the starter... Just use a screwdriver across the terminals, not a wire.. Screwdriver has a handle and you won't get burned. Don't leave it on too long.

Bro - just jump it with a screwdriver. A plastic handled screwdriver for heat / electrical insulation. The fat shaft of the screwdriver will pass the current with a lot less resistance.
