    at 7:38, you have a clear sight of the exhaust flat mating part with the 4 bolts (REMOVED)... I am new to x20xev, and today i was unscrewing the one bolt nearest to the engine, and it sheared off. - any tips on how to get it off, i need to fit a new down pipe and centre section due to rust, but does this now mean I need buy a new manifold gasket? - ps, i am a vectra b 2000.

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s so annoying when the bolts shears off, I think I have an early video showing how I resolved this, unfortunately it may be easier to take off the exhaust manifold and clamp the manifold down. So to fix this you need to centre punch the bolt and start to drill it out, start off with a small jobber drill bit and work your way up to the size of the hole but try and keep away from the threads if you can. Tip: use reverse jobber drill bits as the bolt may loosen as you relive the pressure around the threads. You may need a correct size & thread pitch tap to re tap the hole if it’s in a bad state. If you have a welder you can weld a nut to the top of the bolt the heat may help release the bolt from the manifold. I hope this helps and good luck with this! I know these can be a right pain in the backside! 🤞🤞

    Steve. You are an absolute hero. Doing this clutch replacement on a driveway in winter on your own is mind blowing and inspiring. My favourite remark is one that must go through every DIY car fixer's brain who ever attempts such a complex job...See 23:46 Yes that is a thought that I have all the time when I do any job on my car, let alone one that is as big as this..." I hope I can remember where all these bits go" so funny but so scary too. Many, many thanks for making this video Steve. The job is nearly 2000 quid nowadays, so I am tempted to do it myself even though I'm in my mid 70s. You are my hero.

      Wow what a lovely comment! Thank you very much. I had to re watch my video to see what I said😂 Good on you for considering having ago at this yourself! I advice to have at least 2 jacks like I did or alternatively what I think would be even better, is a motorcycle jack, you can support the gearbox on that as your trying to wrestle it in place, at a minimum have a second person help you at least, even if it’s some rope from the top! These are very heavy gearboxes unlike the Cavaliers from the 80s & 90s. Please let me know what you decide and how it goes should you wish to do this project! It’s a fairly easy job todo it’s just the heavy lifting that makes this job challenging! Yes it wasn’t the best time of year to do this it was cold at the time I done this around this time (mid January) but well worth doing and you can save yourself so much money just like you said. It took me 3 days that included filming the process so definitely doable in 2 days I think, Good luck with your project and I hope you enjoy the results afterwards. If you need any advice let me know and I will try and help where I can. Good luck. Cheers. Steve.

      @@Cavalier_Steve Hi Steve. Yes, it is the weight that worries me. I currently have "tennis elbow" for some reason, that makes moving my right arm painful even lifting a cup of tea!. Currently good news though at the moment. I did a purge and bleed of the hydraulic line from reservoir to the bleed nipple near the internal slave cylinder. This has made the action of the pedal much better. Some air and lots of black stuff/particles came out. The black stuff I can only imagine is from one of the seals somewhere so maybe the fix is only a temporary one... maybe the new fluid will help the seals work better. If this lasts to the summer maybe I will take the job on. Without your comprehensive video, I would not even consider it. All the best Steve :)

      Yeah it's ridiculous mate they are trying to get all these old petrol (and diesel) cars off the road to make us buy EV's but they aren't as green as they say, just making the batteries makes a lot of pollution as I think they are mad in the far east then shipped all around the world then god knows what it takes to decommission them. I think my car tax was around £430 last September and I bet it will be a lot more this year, my SLK is a 2003 model so it's going to be a lot of years before it's MOT and TAX exempt😠🤬

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Definitely Alan! I’ve done mine in the past the difference is the back box slips over the end of the mid section and uses a “U”bolt to clamp the 2 together you can use an exhaust paste to seal the joint up I’ve never bothered as it’s a pitta to get off again, if it does leak it would only be a weep this isn’t a real concern as it will still pass the MOT anyway maybe an advisory if the tester feels, this is a different story if it’s up near the centre section on the entry side, the exhaust would need to be sealed well as the gasses could leak into the car. Cheers mate let me know how you get on with yours.

      Hi, is the shifter stuck in neutral and you are unable to put it into drive or any other gears? Sounds like it could be the shifter interlock, cable, gear shifter or linkage could be stuck or something else is wrong. Is the interlock disengaging? You could try using the emergency interlock release if this is at fault? Just a couple of ideas.

The switch is not damaged because I checked its operation in another car but the light bulb in the switch does not light up. The air conditioning and recirculation switches operate normally and illuminate. I checked the fuse and it's not damaged. Do you have any ideas what to do? Is there a relay I don't know about?

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there, apologies for the delayed reply, I wanted to look at the wiring diagram and give you a detailed response. There are a couple of things to note about this particular circuit and that it needs the engine running and the alternator to be operating correctly to enable the rear screen heater to work (due to the high energy demand) First does the illumination part of the switch work with the rest of the dash lights this isn’t critical to the operation but does show that the switch has a good ground. As you have identified that Fuse 15 is good then we know we have a good feed (fuse 15 comes off terminal 30 which is battery positive so it’s on all the time) this feeds a time delay relay (K35) the relay will also have a terminal that is marked 30 this should have a positive supply constantly. Terminal 31 of the relay is a ground or negative battery connection so if you have a test light, connect the light to 30&31 of where the relay has come from and it should light up, if it does this proves that the relay is getting some of its power. Next check terminal 15 and 31 with your test lamp the lamp should only light when the ignition is switched on (engine doesn’t have to run for this) this is fed from a 20amp fuse, fuse 20 Terminal 5&8 are your switched outputs (this I think are ok) 5 is your mirror output and 8 is your heated screed output the indicator lamp for the switch is also fed from terminal 8 of the relay. Lastly you can do this last test by taking the switch out terminal 3 is supplied by the alternator D+ output. I could be wrong but if you put your test lamp on a positive supply of the battery it should light up when the ignition is on engine off and then go out when the engine is started and the alternator charging. I’m sorry if this is long winded but this is a summary of how the circuit works. Let me know how you get on and I will try and help more if I can. Cheers. And lastly there is a terminal marked E

    Good job done Steve, I've been looking at our good friend Mr Google about doing the same on my SLK one good thing is that the oil filter is at the top of the engine under a plastic panel but it's a cartridge type and of course you need a tool to remove the top of the cartridge which aren't to expensive (this is my first ever car to have a cartridge filter which looks like a paper air filter🤔) looking at the oil spec for my car it says to use a 0W-40 full synthetic which to my old fashion brain looks like it could be thin like tap water 🤷‍♂I just hope it will be ok🤔 I'm not sure if I will be able to do the auto box oil as I'm sure there is a filter to change and from experience they are normally in the box so you have to remove the sump which wont be easy in my carport with only a jack😬🙄 One thing I have heard mentioned before and you said it in your video Steve, what is a "Ricer" 🤔I have no idea what that means so I must be getting old🤣cheers mate looking forward to the next one and sorry again for my stupid long comment👍

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi John, I always enjoy reading long comments, trouble is I forget most of what I need to reply. Most modern cars have gone back to being a cartridge style oil filter, they was like this on much older cars before. Again most modern cars to take a thin oil they say it’s that they are much more advanced and have the ability to stay in between the gaps where oil is supposed to be. Again it’s for less drag on the engine so these will be more efficient as well, not to mention the oil ways can be so small now that a thicker oil can actually cause more problems, I always say go with the manufacturer’s recommendations, some manufacturers specify a thicker grade oil for hotter/colder climates, I’m not sure if this is still a thing or not though nowadays. Hmm I’m not sure what a ricer is myself other than it was boy racers that was in a Honda civic I presume much lower power than what’s perceives (if that make sense) for example making a standard SE model look like a type R but having the original 1400cc engine. I’m lucky and this Honda and my MK3 cavalier doesn’t have a filter just the magnet on the drain plug, but yes your right most gearboxes you have to take off the sump to get to the filter, they are the easy ones as some can be buried in the gearbox 😬 Anyway I hope I have remembered everything, so enjoy my silly long reply 🤣 Cheers John good to hear from you. Steve.
