I have a Hexagon machine which was my Grandmothers. I remember as a child my mother saying the immortal words “just turn the handle while I sew this”. She would have been cutting and shutting a sheet or making pillow cases from an old sheet so the turning went on for ages. It’s in very good condition and looks beautiful. It sews the stitch so much better than the electric one I have. I also have some of the accessories but not a copy of the hand book. I wonder if it’s possible to obtain a copy from you so that the machine could be used over the next generations of my family. Thanks in anticipation. 🧵🧵
Hey. You can actually find the books free online with a google or the singer manual for there version of the machine works just as well :)
@ Thank you I’ll have a search.
Jones called it the “cylindrical shuttle “, which led to this line of machines being called a “Family CS”. I have one in my mini collection called “Sherlock Jones”but it’s a Type 12 from 1937. 😊
Haha I love the name!
The waistline is really flattering.
Thankyou :)
I am on 10 vintage is the best!
I don't know some of the antique ones are pretty nice lol
Hi, I am considering purchasing this from FB Marketplace for my mum as her Juki sewing machine shorted last year. Have you had any issues with this machine since?? Also, how much does it weigh? It seems like your video is the most helpful video I have found for this machine. Thank you for making it.
My boyfriend's got a beer gut, and wears a corset when we go out. And he says that this video is excellent ❤
Thankyou so much :) I'm glad he enjoys it!
I have a 66 just like this, it is amazing! The mechanism is super smooth. These are both model 66, I’m not sure where you got the information that one is a 128? Wherever told you that was wrong. 128s are smaller machines 💜
The information is from the serial number that details the models and the location and year they were made
The sunset beach reveal is such a moody shot, like Vanessa's entrance scene in the movie! I like the texturing of the purple stuff and I'm glad it survived the move and the careful ironing. The beaded lace is also very pretty. And the shell necklace was an excellent investment!
Thank you! I honestly loved this shoot it just came out so well!
Congrats on the win! As you did the reveal I definitely thought this was contest worthy, so I'm glad your hard work really showed through to the judges. The bow is definitely my favorite part, the horsehair made it so cute and puffy while holding shape ❤
Thank you so much :) I really loved making this costume :)
I’m a bit late, but a differently-made scarf idea… Naalbinding. Yes, I’m evil. XD Also, giant spindle is giant… I tend to use those beeg spindles for plying, unless I’m making chonky yarn. Lovely, fluffy floof! Want to spin! Also, cute cats! I miss having a cat.
Naalbinding is actually already on my list to try so if it goes well I'll definitely consider it!
Gorgeous costume, Congratulations on your win!! I want to know if you ever use your "New Home" aka Vintage Janome sewing machine?? I watched your video about how you found the Vintage 1970's New Home aka Vintage 1970's Janome sewing machine. You showed all the features and how well it sewed and you got me HOOKED! I found a Janome like your New Home from Japan on Ebay. WOW what a fantastic machine! I fell in love with yours because of all the lovely features and how it was set up with a place for the feet, and another area where it shows how to put the knobs on an alphabet and a number to get the machine to make a particular stitch. Thank you for showing off your new old vintage New Home Machine.
Hi, yes it was my main machine most of last year so if you look at some of my older videos, even Ariel if I remember right, that's the machine I used. For the moment she has gone into storage as our current apartment is really small but once we move hopefully we can get her back out again!
Shananana Just kiss de girl!
:)
It’s an absolutely glorious bow!
Thank you :)
What a fab cosplay! I have several young students who would die for a bow like that!
It's honestly one of my favourite things I've ever made :)
I like how the scallops of the lace get progressively bigger as they go down the waterfall pleats for the bow tails! It's fun that you can use the bow as a home decor item as well as a costume accessory. Congratulations on your win, and on your new skill at colour-correcting videos.
Thank you :) it was nice to learn a new skill or two!
Absolutely fabulous! Congrats on the win!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Hi Annabelle, your outfit is so lovely. I have seen it come together over time and now that you have all the pieces together it sure is a winner. The hair piece really sets it all off. The lace trim is so nice, so it is of no surprise that you won the competition. Congratulations ☺🥂🏆
Thank you I really appreciate all that :)
Why am I amazed! I shouldn't be .... you are so talented!! Fantastic!! And a big big Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much :)
A very good start on a craft that takes quite a while to learn. It's a real bummer that you live half a world away from me because I do have a drum carder for sale. I live in the US in New York State, just a few hours' drive from the Canadian border. Just the thought of the price of shipping to you makes me cringe. I have the carder because my girlfriend used to spin. But she's developed a problem with her hands, and now it's too painful for her to even try. I'd take it up, but I've got a few hand issues, too. I'd give you some tips, but my ADHD brain would make it more complicated than it should be. Plus, you didn't ask for any advice. Spin on.
Thank you I really appreciate the thought :)
I can really see the benefits of crochet shoes. The gaps provide sandal-like ventilation, very important in hot weather; they are probably fairly light, which is good for cosplay because costumes get heavy; and the relative flexibility of the material compared to commercially-produced shoes means they won't crush your toes or scrape up the back of your heels. If you want to expand on your shoemaking potential, Nicole Rudolph has a felt slipper tutorial and free pattern which could be a good next step. Those might be a bit warm for Australia, though. This would *not* be a good idea for cosplay, because it takes a *bonkers* amount of time, but one of the skills that impresses me most is lace tatting. Crocheted lace and knit lace are both lovely, but bobbin lace is just Something Else, you know?
I've actually got a learn bobbin lace kit that I found in an op shop years ago! I have an idea to use it for a cosplay but probably won't be for another year or so
Ariel does canonically have that pink bag, for retrieving Human Treasures from shipwrecks, but on the other hand this is a really fun way to incorporate another character into the cosplay! (Also, that pink bag does *not* look secure, there are no closures or anything.) A Pascal purse for a Rapunzel cosplay would be similarly cute. Those pellets could be silica for moisture absorption, as you guessed, but they could also be to 'weigh down' the belly of the plush so that it defaults to that position. I've seen some plushie tutorials which suggest using a pellet bag in the butt of 'sitting' toys to keep them from flopping over from the weight of their heads. A Flounder dress would be a fun companion to the Nemo & planned Dory dresses! Flounder and Dory have almost the same palette, but in different shades and proportions.
I feel the pellets were to small to do any weighing down but a good point of I ever need to make a sitting toy. And I have such a cool bag idea for Rapunzel! I can't wait to make it :)
@@AnnabelleAndBensAntics Oooh, Flynn's satchel? Also a canon accessory!
@madebymaryssa oh no but that would also be good I was thinking a lantern bag:)
Lantern bag for you, satchel for Ben? Also, will the lantern bag light up? (LEDs or something in between the lining and shell.)
@@madebymaryssa that's the plan :)
Those sheets really were the perfect colour! I like how the blue gets deeper with each tier closer to the hem. And I agree that it's worth adding a bit more ruffle rather than cutting off just a little of the fabric and having no project for it - even if ruffling *is* So Time Consuming. Another petticoat method to consider is the corded petticoat - I've seen them mentioned on historical costuming blogs, and I accidentally did something like it last summer when I put some corded piping at the top of a ruffle on a skirt hem. Running a cord around the circumference encourages the skirt to flare out, without being as stiff as a hoop skirt or as wide as horsehair braid.
I'm actually planning on trying a type of chording petticoat with my next cosplay to help reduce the layers of tulle I need as it's one I'm going to wear in summer so I will let you know how it goes :)
Jillian Eve has a video on different methods of carding and combing (I know virtually nothing about this craft), and she features a carding roller thing. Is that something that the Ben could make?
That's the carding drum that I mentioned is horribly expensive. If I can't find a cheap second hand one I may ask Ben to try making me one but it does seem it needs some specialized parts which I'm a little worried about getting a hold of
I am no expert, so here goes nothing ! When carding, you are trying to get the fibers to lay flat & perpendicular. (Like little soldiers laying side by side!) When you go to spin, either drop spindle or spinning wheel, you take a small piece and start twirling it.....this is what starts turning into a single "ply." (I'm simplifying!). As you twist, you will be "drawing" more of the fibers into the twist. If they are laying like "little soldiers/side by side" (no tangles or bumps!), they will slide into the twist.....You must keep the twist going to add more wool. Tension is everything & hard to get right. Hope that made some sense !? By the way, you will break your twist/ply a zillion times when you start ! Just want you to be prepared for some frustration! 😞 When you have one "ply" on your drop spindle, you will twist it together with another "ply" to actually make yarn ! (Most commercial yarn is 3 or 4 ply. I believe home spun can be 2 ply?) Back to the video ! Best of luck !
Hey, congratulations on that drop spindle start ! That ply looks FANTASTIC for a beginner !!! Back to the video !
Thank you! And I appreciate the soldier's explanation :) now I have better carding brushes I think it will be a lot easier to get the yarn smooth but I'm still very happy with it :)
Those official carding brushes will definitely help ! Lots of folks start with what we in the USA call "slicker" brushes ! Can't wait to see the spinning wheels ! I recently was offered my Grandmother's spinning wheel - (which will stay at my sister's place for now - in Canada).
I find spinning yarn and using the yarn to make stuff are different hobbies. Ive never got as far as plying the yarn ive spun. 😅
Haha I agree though hopefully they will go well together! I'm aiming to enter the finished piece into a cosplay contest and can't wait to tell the judges Ive little made the fabric myself lol
Congrats on the new place! Woo hoo no more communal living. I (sort of) know how to spin using a drop spindle but processing a fleece is on my list of things to do. There's something so satisfying about watching videos of fleece processing.
Thank you and I agree. I've seen some awesome documentaries on how they do it commercially and definitely need to experiment more with streamlining my own process now I feel I have the basics down!
What fun! I almost picked up some partially processed wool at a by-the-pound sale but I really don’t need another hobby…yet
Haha I was very happy that this was all free. Probably because it wasn't great condition But it's been a fun thing to pick up and put down though now I have the big brushes I may make a day of trying to turn everything into roulettes so that I don't have to deal with the messy part for the next year!
I can't imagine the amount of patience you have Awesome job on developing this new skill
Thank you :)
You have a LOT of spinning ahead of you. Enjoy! It's a fun project.
I will though I reckon I will like it far more when I've got the spinning wheels up and running!
This is so fascinating! Looking forward to the next stage. I've been enjoying watching Engineering Knits process her fleece, too.
I actually only saw her series last night so haven't had a chance to watch it yet but I'm so excited to compare our approaches and hopefully learn (a lot) of what I can do better lol
@@AnnabelleAndBensAntics I've been watching that too, and Be Queer Make Stuff has posted a couple of videos on processing wool recently as well so you must be on trend. Interesting to see people's different experiences doing the same thing.
@Ella-iv1fk haha I love the 'on trend' is just the luck of the work that we all decide to post about our experiments at the same time lol
@@AnnabelleAndBensAntics yeh it's random isn't it? I've been enjoying this though as it reminds me of my granny who kept sheep and spun their wool to make lumpy brown jumpers.
@Ella-iv1fk sheep are so high on my list once I get a house with some land though I can't decide what kind I want....
Hi Annabelle, Spinning is a difficult skill to learn so you are very brave to try it out and well done on your first bit of spinning. Where I live in the UK the is a town with a valley that is called "Carding Mill Valley" I think the name speaks for itself. Always look forward to your videos, thank you ☺
Oh I may be going back to the UK next year so will see if I can drop by and check the place out. Thank you! :)
This was very informative as I have recently started crochet and am already dreaming of spinning my own yarn - especially when I learned about drop spindles! It gives me a glimpse of what to expect - and some lessons on what not to do 😂 in excited tonsee this journey continue for both of us!!!
Thank you! I really enjoyed this and can't wait to make some stuff with it when I at least have enough!
More fiber crafts? Tunisian Crochet, narbinding, Noro felting some more things to dive into. You mentioned some related crafts
Narbinding is actually quite high on my list to try! I've also not heard of Tunisian crochet but will look it up now thank you :)
You sound so busy! At least your cats got some new brushes out of it - with all made dodgy purchases from aliexpress
To be honest I'm still using the small ones occasionally for the wool. Apparently they are processing brushed, called flick brushes but I'm not really sure where they fit in in terms of the overall order it should be brushed in....
I'm sheepish at how long it took me to watch this, but I spun up and got that internet roll in just to make sure I got here.😂
Haha thank you :)
