Why choose a life jacket with pockets for backcountry canoe trips?
Find out what I carry in my lifejacket and how it can help you enjoy your trip with better safety and more efficiency!
I have spent a lifetime enjoying backcountry canoe trips and have developed some habits that help me get deep into the backcountry with more safety and more efficiency, which means having an overall better experience.

Water tabs (I like these because they have no taste): amzn.to/42OPoJc
Leatherman Wave Multi-Tool: amzn.to/42P2fvc
Garmin Mini inReach 2: amzn.to/48qdtax
This video was recorded on Big Crow Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park. One of the most popular canoe-tripping parks in North America. In large part due to it's amazing variety of route choices, wildlife, rugged wilderness and beautiful scenery.

In this video I venture into the backcountry of Algonquin Provincial Park by canoe to photograph wildlife. I encounter a beautiful family of loons that is fighting hard to survive despite the harsh realities of raising young in the wild. This is both a beautiful and tragic story. I love wilderness canoe tripping and find peace in the rugged beauty of the outdoors. A lifelong passion for the out...

Beautiful backcountry.....I believe the owl at the beginning of this episode is a Boreal Owl, which is described as "seldom seen or photographed".....I saw a pair of them years ago while on a solo wilderness backpack mule deer hunt in Holy Cross Wilderness in Colorado, and got a great photo of one of them with a point & shoot camera...I did not kill a deer on that trip but seeing those little owls is a great memory....on these backcountry trips many times it's the little things that make a trip memorable

Looking forward to episode two. I doubt that I "know more than you" but my personal experience is, though I love a hatchet, if I have to only take one it would be a saw and a fixed blade knife every time. Much more energy efficient for processing fire wood.

Cool stuff. Get a small Silky saw (Gomboy) or a Bahco Laplander saw. They weight next to nothing, but really compliment the hatchet, and make getting wood for camp a lot easier. Thanks for sharing

15.5 pounds or 70 newtons of buoyant lift are in (that) PFD (35 Lbs or 150 N are in a LJ that is designed to roll you face up). An inflatable PFD performs at 35/70 as well. It’s generally good to tether items that don’t float to one’s vest. A whistle is good to have attached to oneself too. The long pocket is for carrying a waterproof buoyant radio or GPS. Compass will fit in too; sunscreen & lip balm, big juice. Car keys.

Really enjoyed your video James and been following you on IG for some time and love the images you captured. If I had the choice between a small axe or small bow saw like the Boreal 15 or 21, I would take the saw every time. I think it’s safer and requires less work and is lighter. Can’t wait to see the rest of this series and what you shoot in 2024.

Thank you! I hear what you are saying about the saw vs axe when saving weight. This is a debate I have with myself quite often. Ultimately I have decided I think the small axe offers more versatile uses. Collecting firewood, hammering, protection, shaping. I much prefer using a saw when collecting firewood, so my opinion on this is very malleable! Thank you for watching!
