The Gen 4 Gambling Minigame We Couldn't Play
The Japanese versions of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver feature an exclusive minigame that most of us never got to play. In this video I take a deep dive into the Smeargle Slot Machine minigame, including the absurd and previously unknown ways it rigs the odds against the player. This ended up being the final gambling minigame in the Pokémon series, so let's see what we missed out on!
Sorry this video took so long, I scrapped my previous project because it was taking too long and switched to this last minute lol.

Solving Pokémon Speedrunning's Greatest Mystery
มุมมอง 27K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
I made a non-Gen 4 video on an almost completely undocumented glitch! This is a video on the Mount Skip Glitch in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. While riding Rapidash or Aerodactyl, you can skip any trainer battle in the game (as long as they trigger battle in the normal way). This video aims to document how and why this happens, along with how we utilize the glitch in speedruns! My next v...
I Solved Time Travel in Gen 4 Pokémon
มุมมอง 62Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I finally solved date skipping / time travel in the Generation 4 Pokemon games after almost 20 years. In this video I describe exactly why the game can catch you messing with your system date, and a new time travel method that sidesteps this. No emulators, no custom firmware, no glitches, just a specific official Nintendo console! All footage captured on my Nintendo DS with authentic Pokemon Di...
The Hidden Egg Hatching Mechanics of Gen 4 Pokémon
มุมมอง 68K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
It took people over 10 years to discover the hidden mechanic that speeds up egg hatching, so in this video I go over exactly how the mechanic works and everything you need to know in order to hatch eggs as quickly as possible. All footage captured on my Nintendo DS with authentic Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, and SoulSilver cartridges. Subscribe for more Pokemon content! Research Website: s...
The Parasocial Gen 4 Pokémon Feature That Nobody Unlocked
มุมมอง 248K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I missed something BIG last time, it turns out there's more undocumented dialogue within the Battle Hall! Similar to my previous Hall video, I couldn't find any info on this online. Outside of the celebrity fans like Professor Oak, Jasmine, and Whitney, you have a super fan named Winston or Serena. It turns out these super fans have WAY more dialogue than I expected and it's unlocked in a separ...
The Platinum Battle Tower Glitch That Makes You Lose
มุมมอง 107K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I encountered a glitch in Pokemon Platinum's Battle Tower which inadvertently led to solving a 15 year old mystery. It's extremely easy to accidentally activate this and lose your entire win streak while challenging the Battle Tower. In this video I go over what happened, how it was solved, and how you can prevent it from happening to yourself! I also explore if it happens in Diamond, Pearl, He...
The Platinum Rival Battle You Couldn't Unlock (Until Now)
มุมมอง 669K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The mystery of the Pokemon Platinum Level 75 Barry fight has haunted me for over a year, so I finally decided to investigate! It's been known for years that there exists an additional rival battle in the game, featuring Pokemon up to Level 75, separate from the Barry battle that unlocks at 20 Hall of Fame entries. The longstanding myth is that it unlocks at 10 Hall of Fame entries, but it turns...
The Gen 4 Pokémon Bug That Secretly Wasted Time
มุมมอง 345K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
After almost 20 years we finally have an answer to one of the weirdest phenomenons in Gen 4! TheMasterZelda found a bug in Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum that causes the seemingly random delay on Honey or Berry Trees that people have experienced. In this video, I explain what the bug is and how to deal with it! All footage captured on my Nintendo DS with authentic Pokemon cartridges. Subs...
The Gen 4 Pokémon Feature That Nobody Unlocked
มุมมอง 523K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Over the last year I've been working on and off to research one of Gen 4's mysteries. In Pokemon Platinum / HeartGold / SoulSilver you can unlock fans in the Battle Hall. These fans have ridiculous requirements to unlock, and as a result their dialogue is basically undocumented. As far as I'm aware this is the first footage available of this dialogue on the internet! The NPC's involved are Etha...
I'd much rather have this than the monstrosity that was Voltorb Flip. That game was fun for all of ten minutes before realizing its payout became too low to bother with. Sure, I never bothered with gambling in the slots outside of novelty, either, but at least I could buy coins.
Voltorb flip sucks, lets be real here.
Facts.
What's the music at 1:23?
I hated voltorb flip. I still haven't forgiven europe for taking away my slot machines. Also hard disagree on the the Team Galactic slot machines music. The Clefairy bonus round music is fine mixing Mt. Moon with gen 1 slot machines and it all has a Gamboy-ish feel without outright mimicking the sound of a Gameboy. The normal game corner music for DPPt is one of my favorite tracks in the entire series.
I hate the idea of how much time youd need to spend on this playing those aggravating battles
Anything taking away Gambling is a + in my book SPECIALLY Rigged Gambling. At that point you are just playing REAL GAMBLING. Like Gacha
Love gambling and Pokemon, I didn’t know how good we had it until it was gone 🥲
I remember grinding Voltorb Flip for several hours getting a Dratini in Goldenrod. I didn't have the patience to learn the minigame, so I just brute-forced it by going for guaranteed lines. All of this could have been avoided if they had just let us BUY the coins. Like every other game before this one. Last I checked, trading currency isn't gambling.
Too bad Pokemon battles don't make girls feel tingly, confess their love, and lose sleep over you in real life 😂😂
I remember actually playing this, via a uh less-than-official Japanese copy (I had a weird grudge against the concept of Voltorb Flip as a replacement at the time hence seeking it out), despite not knowing Japanese XD The skill-based Johto starter section was definitely my favourite part. (Then I played in English and came around a little on Voltorb Flip. Felt like I won coins slower iirc, and I did miss the Johto starter minigame part, but it was tolerable enough.) I also remember taking a save from the Japanese version, where I'd saved *inside* the Game Corner, and loading it into the English version (the benefits of a uh less-than-official setup that let me access save files directly). Iirc the map that loaded was the Japanese Game Corner map (so that still existed as-is in the international version), but every slot machine loaded Voltorb Flip instead. This was all well over a decade ago though so take it with a grain of salt XD Thanks for the video, I didn't know most of this (due to, well, not knowing Japanese) (also the part where some of the mechanics are hidden).
7:02 made me laugh… mew under trucks..
To be fair slots have always been rigged, they’ve always been programmed in some sense to have precise odds of paying out but in Pokémon’s case they weren’t actually that bad, real slots are terrible because you may have a 1/10000 chance of hitting a jackpot and casinos are required to have that 1/10000 chance programmed in but they can also program 9500 “close misses” into that 10000 so it feels like you keep getting really close which is why people get addicted
Nice video! Yeah, that minigame was difficult for sure! Keep it up!
The art style of smeargle reminds me of Paper Mario
i really appreciate how thorough you are with your research ! i've learned a ton of interesting details from your videos <3
Smeargle Slots takes less brain power to operate. It wins by default
Definitely preferred the slots over discount minesweeper
voltorb flip is terrible IMO, i usually ended up using an online calculator to predict the board, slots i'm entirely neutral on but i'd rather just be able to buy coins outright.
Personally, I found that the slot machines in DPP to be the most rigged in the player’s favor, with the Clefairy Or at the very least, it was consistent across when I played. The music might be its own issue, to be fair. But it felt easy to maintain a rate of increase.
My favourite part of the video was when you said the bonus round music was annoying and then proceeded to play an absolute jam Did you just... play a different tune for no reason? I'm confused
I could imagine the luck per session is the implementation of a classically teased mechanic where each machine has different odds, but I'm not positive about that
Somehow, it never occurred to me that the slots in JP HG/SS would actually have unique graphcis and mechanics. I assumed they just borrowed the Clefairy Slots from D/P/Pt
Man explained Hikari domain expansion in a pokemon video
Pokemon Heartgold Gamblers Paradise
Maybe Pokemon should start putting microtransaction and Lootboxes so they can't get slapped with 18+ age rating. Wait...
Umm... Excuse me?
How dare you dis on slots music in platinum! 😭😂
Didn't expect Harry Enfield
To avoid being a gambling game, the slots were replaced with a system where the player spends real world money for a random chance to win something.
I'm now upset for Japanese pokemon fans who didn't get to play voltorb flip.
In the Gen 1 and 2 games it was possible for me to max out the coin counter and get prizes, in Kanto in Gen 3 it was also possible. Ruby/Sapphire and the games after it was so boring/impossible that I just never bothered. With how many coins you need to get prizes in the gen 4 games I can't say I miss it, but, they did similar nonsense in other facilities later with cost of things in Battle Points or in Pokemon Money.
I exlusive bought coins in every gen except HG/SS I don't miss them at all
I know there's a machine or two in fire red that is way easier to win than others. I'm curious to see how that one works now, even if it's simpler
I think I saw a video on this before but I'm not entirely sure
i liked the clefairy slots. it felt like the most fair slot game we received in a western release
id be so sad without voltorb flip but this is cool
i never bought coins, I just save scummed that stuff as a kid. id just hammer the button(s) while barely looking, check every now and then if i lost too much, reset and do it again... voltorb flip could have been an annoyance bc it cant be cheated like that, but i enjoyed it as a game so i didnt mind.
I'm pretty sure the slots in every game from gen 1-4 are rigged in a similar way. Outcome determined once the reels starts spinning. I've believed this to be the case for a long time! Finally, validation!!! 😂
I hate slots and always bought coins, so I'm not really upset. I've always hated gambling, so maybe Pokemon is where that frustration started 😅
I always was so interested in the engineering behind all these 'luck' based mini-games. Thank you for making this video, it satisfied my curiosity on this one.
I expected more when I clicked on this. It just seems like this was a some unused teams they didn't bother cutting.
I still don't like Voltorb Flip I don't get it
I hate voltorb flip personally.
I think both minigames suck and I just wish you could buy coins like past gens. I want my Sandshrew.
I personally liked the idea of Voltorb Flip but hated the execution. If it was always solveable I would have loved it but what we got was a game with a lot of luck. Removing the option to be able to buy coins is something I always hated.
I hope that one day through reverse engineering and decompiling the games, that we can merge the differences between versions to have the definitive way to play these games.
June 11th isn't a random date, that was the day Okinawa became part of Japan again, after WW2 until June 11th 1971 that was an American territory which is a fairly big deal here in Japan. It's not celebrated as a big holiday however it is very important in the way the fall of the Berlin Wall is viewed. August 21st however brings nothing to mind, unless it's some very local holiday? We have many of those and without living in the particular area you're not going to find much info on such holidays and festivals. I'm in north Japan so idk what is off for in that situation. Or it's a release for something ie a movie.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the slot machine the old man is on that is rigged to be very lucky. He only leaves once in the entire week. Or is that difficulty you thought wasn’t accessible? Also the Clefairy slots in Platinum are the best slot machines in my opinion. You must match Clefairy and get a ton of coins. The moon shines different colors and if you follow the glowing white moon you are guaranteed another bonus round while following the blood moon is more likely to end the bonus. A shiny Clefairy once guided me to get around 5,000 coins in one game. The shiny one is more likely to stay over the other forms. But Voltorb flip is still the best out of mini games to get coins.
Wow so much effort put into this video! Thank you for doing all the research!! I’m just impressed by how much time and effort you put into this for us 😭
Honestly I kinda wish they had made a Gamecorner that was more like an arcade. Let’s be real here, places like Chucky Cheese are just casinos for kids, but the thing I’m getting at is that there’s way more variety in the games you can play, it’s not just betting money and hoping for a favorable outcome. Voltorb Flip is a fine game, it’s just kinda boring how it’s the only game available with no way to buy coins if you’d rather not interact with it; that second bit makes nuzlockes pretty tedious too.
Shame it's hyper specific, only have a new 3ds xl now no time traveling for me qwq
