Solving Pokémon Speedrunning's Greatest Mystery

- I made a non-Gen 4 video on an almost completely undocumented glitch! This is a video on the Mount Skip Glitch in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. While riding Rapidash or Aerodactyl, you can skip any trainer battle in the game (as long as they trigger battle in the normal way). This video aims to document how and why this happens, along with how we utilize the glitch in speedruns! My next video will be on Gen 4 again don't worry :).
Massive thank you to Anubis and Sandy Beach for their help with this mystery.

Appreciate the support on branching out, will definitely mix it up when I have good video ideas :).
One thing I wanted to mention that I completely forgot about until I uploaded this video: this glitch exists in Sword/Shield too. You can bike boost past the first trainer on route 6 and skip her battle. Nobody’s done real testing but I assume it’s the same thing. It’s much tricker since a lot of trainers can move their heads, but might be possible on every other bike battle. Also would be significantly harder to make speedrun viable setups like I did here since there’s the button input element too.
Please don't feel restricted into gen 4 content, I love anything of this nature that you make!
Yeah. I honestly don't really care for gen 4 that much, so it's cool to see other games.
I love the Gen 4 explanations, but I found that even a game that I had zero interest in like this was interesting to hear about.
ditto
honestly don’t even have to be pokemon lol love when someone just know shit and share it gimmie that information
As a trainer standing around in victory road, it's really annoying when these stupid new trainers run faster than I can see past me
As someone who shiny hunted a lot in this game including during my playthrough, Anubis' discovery years later if how we all method hunted wrong for YEARS which explains why some hunts would take literally 8 hours was so enlightening and hilariously maddening at the same time. Anubis' discoveries are a godsend.
So many games dont document their glitches even when speedrunners use them. Thanks for documenting this one.
Accidentally creating an insane skip and only noticing cause of a chatter is so beast
"GenCon for my fellow nerds" is a hilarious thing to say in a video about Pokemon speedruns
I actually first found your channel through Let's Go Speedruns, so I'm not disappointed in the least to see a video on the topic. Congrats on the AGDQ spot!
Being required to catch 50 pokemon makes the speedrun extremely unique, so I definitely recommend people look into it!
Dawson skip my beloved (got it twice "accidentally on purpose" in AOP speedruns lol). Great video Etchy!
No problem branching out from Gen 4 content! But also, I demand an apology for you stopping before Gen 5. >:C
That was awesome man, it doesn't have to always be gen 4 lol, keep doing amazing work!
No need to worry about only posting gen 4 stuff - or even only pokemon! If there's something interesting you want to talk and make a video about, I'd watch it! Your videos are made extremely well and are always entertaining to watch.
Thank you!
What an interesting glitch. I wonder why they made the trainer sightline a decimal width? Making it 25 units wide is numerically appealing, but they could have made it wider just as easily. How funny that they made it such an odd number that only just allowed this glitch to be possible.
hard to be sure why they did it that way without knowing the coordinate scale -- that is, how wide a map tile is.
25.28 inches is roughly equal to 0.7 yards. if the game measures coordinates in inches and if a map tile is meant to be 1x1 yards, then a trainer's vision would cover 70% of a tile's width, which seems appropriate. of course, the game's unit of measurement for coordinates may not necessarily align cleanly (or at all) with any real-world distance unit.
Yeah I'm super curious what's happening in the code. I imagine it's not just a static number they set somewhere since it is a weird number to set it too. Same with Rapidash/Aerodactyl, I doubt there's anything that says "speed = 26" in the code.
Completely clueless about Pokemon let's go, so most likely wrong and definitively missing info, but might it be possible that the vision is just a raycast, and the 25.28 is the size of the player's hitbox?
I don't care to much more speed running but I love learning out pokemon games work so very fascinating!
Yeah definitely don’t box yourself in anywhere in regards to content. I’ve really enjoyed the gen 4 videos because it was the one I grew up with and it feels like people often stop talking about obscurities/glitches at gen 3 but frankly your videos are so good I’d love to hear about basically anything
This was really well-explained!! I’ve seen some Let’s Go runs before, but they’ve all been pre-2022, so now I’m extra excited for this AGDQ showing!
I can't wait to watch you at AGDQ! Good luck on your run, dude!
Another great vid! Love a glitch and mechanic Pokumentary.
amazing video as always and I am beyond excited to watch you run this at AGDQ! very few people have put as much time, love, and passion into this game as you have, and you've inspired and entertained more people than you know! if you didn't start running Let's Go I have no idea if I'd even be a speedrunner or not, it's crazy how that butterfly effect stuff works lol
Etchy thanks for this vid, the gen 4 is cool, but this is cool too. Do your thing, make what you like.
loved watching you cover a different generation, great video!
Let’s Goated Pikachu just gets better
You should invite anubis to be a part of your couch for gdq if you can or if you haven't yet.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
You're still gonna be my favourite pokémon youtuber even if you branch out from gen 4! Do what you find fun (also, great video as always :3)
I have never played Let's Go and have no real desire to, but that doesn't stop these videos being fascinating!
Hi! I played this game casually but I can say for a fact I never experienced this, because I never used mounts? I don't know why, I knew they existed, I just didn't want to use any rideable Pokemon on my team. Anyway, very interesting and informative!
This is the only game I speedrun even if it’s casually. Thank you for making this LOL
Phenomenal thumbnail art by yogcavey! Reply to this comment if you are a true yogcaver

I'm all for content of other gens, especially if it's gonna be gens 3, 6 or 7. I'm counting Let's Go as gen 7, so this is great, love it, more please!
Great vid as always! Etchy showing why he's the KING of Lets Go
Honestly surprised more Switch speedrunners playing this game wouldn't invest not just in third-party pads, but in hall effect replacement sticks. The joy-cons are honestly one of the easiest controllers to replace the stick assembly, since it has its own little board. Super easy to open it up, and put in a stick that's not a pile of garbage, since it's just disconnecting and reconnecting a little ribbon cable, no awkward soldering or anything.
Doesn't help the joy-con itself not be a terrible gamepad, but it helps it be reliable!
Love your channel!
This is simultaneously the most useless and the most entertaining research I've ever seen!
We as a society should fund hobbies that lead to discovery and development of problem solving techniques
This is great and have never seen you before keep up the great content
omg i would love to see you do GDQ! congratulations!
Ooh! Best of luck on the AGDQ run!
I love that the thumbnail parallels the "we solved fnaf and we're Not Kidding." video lol
You’re doing an AGDQ run?! I can’t wait to watch
"Now a minute may not sound like much". No, I've watched enough speedrunning history videos to know that a minute sounds like a *lot*, even in a much longer run than this
As a game programmer, not knowing what the glitch was yet, i tired to think about what may be happening and i was right so i'm happy to know i'm not as bad a programmer as i think i am; moving too fast for the raycast to catch you, i have had this problem happen to me as well, funny to see that even big companies make such silly mistakes
Hi Etchy!
Love the video, and the channel a lot. I instantly subscribed when I found it, and I wanted to say thank you for the great content and keep up the great work.
Now for a tangential question. What music is playing at 6:11? It's so familiar, but I can't quite place it.
Either way, as I said above, keep up the great work!
I think the music is goldenrod city in hgss
Thank you! It is indeed Goldenrod City from HGSS. Before I clicked the timestamp I was really worried you were talking about what plays at 8:43 cause I have zero idea lol (2 year old clip moment)
At least this is one of those tricks where a hypothetical TAS could now just ignore trainers freely in a way that looks funny, at least after getting one of these mounts.
As if anyone watching this doesn't know what gencon is lol.
Very cool video, great work
Crrool is an absolute legend, didn't know he discovered this!
14:59 - "Aerodactyl is in fact a Pokémon." Wait, it isn't a Digimon?! :P
"Aerodactyl is, in fact, a Pokemon" (surprised Pikachu face)
14:07 SPOTTED
18:17 again!
Naw but fr I love watching you nerd out over LGPE, always fun to watch any of your runs, especially when we get goated content like mount skips out of it
Don't be afraid to beanch out to honestly all of the gens you can have the 4th be your main gen but thats up to you.
the wiggle in the opposite direction just sounds like snapback
dont focus only on gen4 it's great to have anything informative about the series in general
Awesome video! I saw you on the gdq schedule when it came out and have been looking forward to seeing the run!
I have a somewhat unrelated question: After watching your videos I happened to run into something I found that's undocumented in gen 5, the double grass mechanics. There's virtually no information online about how they work, what the rates are, or anything like that. I tried doing a bit of research into it myself since I was inspired by how you've been approaching this stuff to try to get it documented, but I feel like I've run into a brick wall as far as locating the information to begin with, since all I have to go off is an ancient smogon thread. So my question would be do you have any advice as far as where to go to research this kind of thing?
I imagine you're super busy and may not even ever see this but if you have any thoughts I would love to hear it!
I don't understand that joy-con hate. I've never had any issues with them, and I'd bought Switch on premiere
anybody knows which dates turns off sandstorm on Unova Route 4? JRose shown it in his Shedinja solo run recently
but can you solve my greatest mystery (where's my keys)
This is so damn cool
Now they should make a Min Trainer%
2:46 you know what else is massive?
Please talk about the ror2 infinite height from falling down I can’t find it anywhere
How tight is the space to walk in front of the two trainers before vermilion without triggering a battle? First time I came there I went past both, but next time I went into the route, the trainer of the right spotted me
I don't think I actually ever checked the exact length but its super tight, gut says 50 pixels/units. I'll have to check this later because I'm curious too :)
2:55 "i dont have an img of the old site"
wayback machine? :-)
Tried but no luck :(
Mewtwo is so powerful.. are you sure he can't mount skip..?
You can't get Mewtwo until after the speedrun is over. Idiot.
mewtwo can do ANYTHING.
GLITCHES?! GLITCHES?! FRICK
I'm pretty sure i experienced it on pokemon/cycling road with a persian...
I agree don’t stick to gen 4 just don’t go in on gen 3 please.
Neat.
Make some boardgame content!
dmn, glitches are the best part of Pokemon games hahaha
Let's Go Are the Best Pokemon Games on Switch 😂
interesting
There's no such thing as "sub pixel" coordinates in 3d games. Really irritates me when people refer to "pixels" in 3d space when they just mean "really precise."
@@BryceDixonDev my bad, I switched pixel to “unit” to be more accurate on a revision but missed that spot. Just meant you can be in an x position of like 1200.1 which looks the same as 1200.8 but one would get the skip and one wouldn’t.
if you like attention to detail please play gen 5 I'm begging
Algorithm comment
:-o
Are there any not fellow nerds here? Haha
8:30 took myself over a decade before i could admit it to myself, time for YOU to admit it:
that's not bad controller design perse, since you just admitted needing HELP.
since without those guard rails you can't seem to move the stick left perfectly.
I mean nobody can so yeah kinda bad design
but at least admit it's also a skill issue :D
I feel like once it's a physically impossible issue it stops being a skill issue.
It's moreso, the Nintendo joy-cons have a lot more granularity and no notches. The controllers have too /good/ of joysticks for these skips to work, they're too close to how you actually move them down to minute detail. So, Nintendo joy-con are GOOD design, and we need a bad controller for the skips to work.
Speed running that uses glitches are boring anyway, i prefer fast as possible while playing through the game the way it should be
Who asked?
@@LarszardI guess opinions are banned now, cool
So many Let's Go clips and so little eevee content 😔
