Ella Toone is the Most Misunderstood Player in the WSL | Analysis | Women's Football
Ella Toone doesn't get enough credit for the way she plays the game. There isn't another attacking midfielder like her in England and the WSL, and in this video, I explain what her game is and what her strengths are. Toone is a player I've admired for a long time, and an analysis of her within the Manchester United and England setups explains why she's so important for both teams. Basically here's 17 minutes of why Ella Toone is a magnificent player. Enjoy! :)

Liverpool, can you please recruit Ella Toone?
At last, someone who talks football and gives a real analysis of Ella Toone's game. So much criticism without knowledge. Tooney is special when she connects with her football. As a 10, being creative (MC/MCO). Her reading of the game and her filtered passes (finding space) is underrated. Apart from that he has good ball striking (outside the box) he should try more. I agree, his teammates don't pass him balls (ManU/England) because of mistrust. Because of her losing the ball (that's what containment and team pressing is for) and they punish her by not playing her for long periods of time. Disconnecting her from the game and creating a lack of trust (she generates mistakes). Mainly in Lionesses they don't trust her and they don't know how to promote her on the pitch. Add to that the fact that DT Sarina doesn't scold them for not using the 10 in the system, she gives them too much freedom. You gave a perfect example with Lucy Bronze. The turnover in the World Cup final goal against Spain is because she didn't pass the ball to Tooney's movement (see the play) and that play was worth a World Cup. Although to improve I would correct him with training: Loss of the ball. More ball retention (pressure support). Power in his shot on goal. Great analysis, best regards 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you very much! I agree, I think she needs to work on ball retention and shot power. One thing I wanted to mention in the video is that I think Toone's influence gets progressively less the longer she holds onto the ball. She thrives off instinct and anticipation and she does release the ball very quickly which is much needed in an England team full of dribblers.
Even if it doesn't benefit Tooney, retention is necessary in a 10. In more physical games or with quicker transitions that break your team (system). And you need to clean up areas and slow down the pace of play to reorganise. 👍🏼
Came for tooney stayed for shadow 😂❤
Appreciate you!! :) Thanks for watching!
Serena has a different outlook like the previous friendly she preferred Naz did not give a chance to Agee , what’s the meaning of friendly games ? Serena can give Naz first half and Agee second half,
I would like to see Sarina give more chances to more inexperienced players, but my guess is that she wants the team to gel and be more cohesive since the performances haven't been up to standard. Hoping for them to gain more confidence going into the Euros I think. But we can only speculate.
Could you do one about Guro Reiten? You really pinpoint the skills of players that often go under the radar. She is so underrated
I could, my next video I'm planning to make is going to be a look at Bompastor's Chelsea so I will probably mention Reiten in there. As for a full video on her, I have players ahead in the queue but I will add Reiten to the list.

I feel like she will be better if a new manager comes in sooner than later. This season she has often been played out of position. She will get better as the season moves forward...
I think Skinner has been experimenting with how best to use Terland, Toone, Bizet, Galton, Clinton, Geyse, Miyazawa etc. He needs time to figure out who should play where. Toone has been deployed at 10 and on the left which I can see why, but I think Skinner has largely settled on her at 10 which I think is the right thing to do.
Really good analysis
Thank you!!
No, she's overrated, and Daly should still in the England team.Tusso and Daly were brought of in the world cup final. But Bronze was the weak link and should have been dropped. However, Daly is a terrific player, and Tone should not be included, irrespective of being Russo's best friend. Russo is brilliant.
Gonna have to disagree with you there unfortunately. Daly retired from the national team, and she plays a different position to Toone. I think there are lots of 10s for Sarina Wiegman to choose from (Park, Kirby, Clinton), but I think Toone is so different to all of them and she works really well with Keira Walsh because she can spot her runs, just like the Euro final goal. Russo is brilliant though I agree, will probably make a video on her down the line.
Toone and Russo are good friends are they? Na, it’s bit more than that, know what I mean nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

OMG someone had to say it. Bro, this makes my day. Toone has to be one of the most interesting and intelligent players. However, people who don't know football thinks she has to be this tricky grace Clinton, or fast Fran Kirby like type of player.
Glad I can make your day! Exactly, she's just a different type of player, one that is quite uncommon but brilliant.

Great review, with some comic moments for light relief. That Jermany moment was made all the more funny by the reaction of those around her, and the fact she laughed at it too. She seems to revel in the image of the thick, but supremely talented footballer, more commonly associated with mens football. Analysis was logical and engaging. We often don't realise how much work and creativity a player shows throughout a match in a highlight reel, especially those just showing the goals. Football is a team game, and Toone is clearly a team player. This video makes clear that when Toone is playing with other talented players who compliment her she is very effective. That is necessary in top class football. Perhaps you should consider doing more analysis like this of female players, as you are obviously good at it.
Toone is very much a team player, I think at United people are expecting her to conjure up her magic every week but sometimes it's really not her fault if she can't. Her Euro final goal vs Jermany will forever live in my head rent free. Thanks so much! I do have more videos out on my channel if you'd like to check them out. Exactly, it's never an accident when she's in space
One of the most talented in the sport as well as one of the most beautiful of all women soccer players. As with ALL players, sometimes opportunities just fail to appear on the pitch. But when it does she takes full advantage of it, far better than most would, and is a tremendous asset to her team and to Team England on the world stage.
She is such an asset for her team and as long as her teammates are on the same wavelength as her, her selection will always be justified

Poor form?! Ha. They expect fireworks every time. She saves those up for when she needs it. Her strength is attacking mid-field general. If she trusts the players around her or the game is going well, that is what she does. She doesn't seek the limelight, the glory. When she goes crazy it's because she's pissed off. She gave the new superstar strikers at Man U time to settle in. They didn't. Tooney's patience doesn't last long. At club she will be Gerrard, a long serving adored captain. Who turns crunch matches. Right now she's Gerrard after Owen left. At country she is the Gerrard that should have been. Because she's so unassuming and happy to let others score, and will stay at Man U. She's undervalued. For my money, she's Ballon d'or material every year she's fit. She's a big reason we got the Euros. Those crunch goals got us through. And she's the reason we'll get the WC. Just like the FA cup, next time she'll be pissed. And like Gerrard, people respond to her. Stanway, Russo, Walsh, all play better when Tooney is in a bad mood.
We love her Tooney, we do!
8:09 "Maya Le Tissier commits the foul because she already plays for Man United back then" 😂 was as a highly underrated joke as Tooney's "cerebral" game 🙌 Ella Toone is one of my all time favourite footballers (and sport personalities, I can listen to her podcast to no end) because of the reasons you've listed in this video, thank you for producing this analysis for all to see! Truly a once in a generation talent. It's frustrating to watch her upset during games when her teammates couldn't see what she sees on the pitch; her mind runs a couple steps ahead of everyone else, with unconventional ways to beat her defenders. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan but I was sad for Tooney when Russo left; they worked together so well on and off the pitch. Thankfully Man U recruited the right players to surround her in the attacking half to compliment her game this season. PS. Just subscribed to your channel, I'm glad TH-cam algorithm brought your video to my home feed. Thank you for producing such excellent content on women's football! -red.
I'm glad you caught that joke haha! Last season was very frustrating to watch, and most of the goals she scored were from her own individual effort rather than a team play. Thank you so much for the kind words!! I'm working on another analysis video now
@ShadowFootballYT hahah the joke was as slick as Tooney's chip shot in the Euro's finals 😸 And I agree, last season was tough to watch indeed, even Arsenal only had a few moments of "beautiful football"; most of the time they were very stagnant, passing without intent or purpose. Pale in comparison to the top tier teams such as Barcelona, Lyon, Wolfsburg, Bayern, Man City, or Chelsea. Despite being an Arsenal fan, I follow most female teams in different leagues, WSL, Frauen-Bundesliga, D1 Arkema, etc. so I'm grateful to see more female football oriented channels such as yours. I'll definitely be watching! 😃🙏 -red.

i think toone should follow müller to bayern -- she would really thrive in jermany. this was a super enjoyable watch! there was so much...i don't know how to say this...love, i guess, in this video, while the tactics and humor were on point as always. in full honesty, i still don't quite rate toone and i think england will have massive problems next summer if she's in the starting xi rather than her clutch supersub role, but she's obviously still a very good player. and if she ever decides to leave europe, i know of one club that would be perfect for her: utah royals. the royals are on a mission to score 100% of their goals from outside of the box, so toone would fit right in!
I think she plays the best when she's with England. I wanted to focus on Manchester United for this video, but I have so many examples of her movement and runs with England where players like Walsh, Williamson, Stanway, Russo all notice and actually play the ball to her, which could be a separate video. Playing with top class players elevate her game a lot more and they bring Toone into the forefront because her movement is rarely ever noticed if you're just watching a game. I have to make this video with love because I think she's been unfairly criticised due to people not fully realising how good she is. If you really want to see how good she is, next time you watch a United or England game, just focus on Toone, don't watch anyone else, you'll see just how good she is. Thanks for watching!
@@ShadowFootballYT will do!

Bro this video is so good and I love how you make football tactics not boring but actually interesting. Ella Toone is most definitely misunderstood; I think Mark Skinner made Tooney carry a lot on her back. I am glad you you made this video; you summed it up very well. As always I love you sense of humor!!
Thank you so much!! Last season yeah Toone had to really carry the team, half the goals she scored were solo efforts as well, literally dragging her team through the mud. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
Skinner should thank them for saving his job xzD 13:27
2:21 god no xD no words to describe how wrong
United without Ella would be 5 places lower down the table. She's like the Bruno of the womens team. Looks subpar because of her inconsistent teammates. Statistically she's still one of the best CAM's in the league. Deserves more respect man.
Exactly, she's levels above what she seems. She's got better teammates around her now at United which I'm sure will elevate her performances
Thanks so much for this. I've been trying to say these things to anybody who would listen for the last year and a half, and now I have this video to point them to. I get so frustrated when fans complain that she was "invisible" during a match, failing to realize that it's not her fault: Too many of her teammates are playing with their heads down, looking at their own feet, and not giving her a chance to do her magic. I don't think she'll ever leave United -- it's in her blood -- but she would actually be a much better fit at a team like Barcelona.
Yes please point them to this video!! I agree, I don't think she'll ever leave United for as long as they want her there. When there were rumours about her going to Barcelona in the summer, it made sense, just imagine her playing alongside Bonmati, Patri and Putellas. She's always good with England and I think Sarina so far has been the best at maximising Toone's strengths. Thanks for watching!
Happy to see a new video from you!

Thank you for watching! Took me 3 weeks to make this haha
At last! a spot on analysis of one of the best players in the womens football. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Loved the video on Toone! Really helps to gain perspective on the type of player that she is now compared to when she first started out at Blackburn, however one thing caught my attention during the video. You said that last season an a 4-2-3-1 system, she was asked to facilitate and finish a lot of attacking plays for United, do you think that she would've been better helped in a 4-1-4-1 system to interchange with the lone DM in that formation with two advanced midfielders with some sort of technical ability to recycle the ball, interchange in and out of possession, or add to the press to lessen the amount of importance that 4-2-3-1 system hinged on Toone, what do you think?
I think the issue with that team wasn't the system, but more the personnel. What United were missing last season, especially the first half, was Lisa Naalsund, who was always on the bench. Miyazawa too. Players capable of linking Zelem to Toone. The gap of mentality in the midfield was the issue, and I think in a 4-1-4-1, Toone would have to play in a deeper role which she can do but doesn't utilise her strengths at all. She's great at playing a couple yards out from the opposition defensive line and if she's dragged elsewhere, that kind of nullifies her game. Thanks so much for watching!
Great video again! You summed up Tooney really well at the end- she's a really intelligent player with a bright future. I feel like she was unfairly criticised in a poor united team, like you pointed out she is capabale of creating great opportunities, her teammates were just not giving her the ball. Feel like she could have a really bright future with England
Thank you! I agree, I think she was the scapegoat for a poor and disjointed United team last season. I think Sarina is the coach that really knows her strengths and backs her to start

imo, the future (as in, significantly into the future!) of the keira walsh role is lexi potter. ...my opinion is not a very trustworthy one though, given that i am not english and am simply a delusional chelsea fan 😅 (i genuinely do think she's gonna make it far though! getting 90 minutes in the wsl every week having just turned 18 is certainly not a bad start, and there's no unmovable DM at chelsea that will stop her from breaking into the squad) also: do you think hampton will be #1 now? or will earps still end up with the spot by the time the euros come around? i also find it very interesting that missy bo kearns was relegated back to the u23s. i wonder if the one caveat to this video is sarina's seeming inability to integrate in young players. in full honestly, i don't think i rate kearns as highly as you do, but it still is pretty emblematic at how slow sarina is at bringing young players (if you even count a 23-year-old with tons of top flight experience "young" in football terms) into the fold. i'd be skeptical, if i was an england fan, at the total lack of any uncapped players on the current roster for two FRIENDLIES. very skeptical. finally, a prediction: if layzell returns from injury soon (fingers crossed!), i think she'll make the november roster. might be another decade or so until she makes it onto the pitch, but...baby steps!
Potter looks good, may well be the future honestly, safe to say the DM position in England is in safe hands. As for the keeper position, I think both are fantastic. Personally whoever between the two is the #1, I have no complaints. I think if you look at the players coming through, Sarina has reason to not pick them yet. The core squad is still very young, many of them under 27, there's not much of a reason to blood in young players unless they're performing exceptionally well. Obviously I would like to see more younger players get a chance, but there is still a bit of a gulf in quality between the uncapped players and the capped ones. I think if Layzell wasn't injured, she would have been in the squad.
@@ShadowFootballYT though the forward & midfield core groups may be young, and the CB group is stacked in both starters and depth, the only natural full back in the whole squad for the october friendlies is a person who is going to turn 33 during those said friendlies 😓 i understand not seeing a reason to integrate young players when there's an already settled, relatively young squad and a major major tournament in less than a year (though i still disagree--i just find it understandable), but the fullback situation is very, very iffy. maybe you're right and layzell would have been brought in this camp, but would she have even played? and then the left back position would still be a problem. what happens if charles is injured for the euros? both greenwood and carter now exclusively play CB for their clubs (jess does at gotham since tierna got injured) and england would be missing a huge chunk of attacking power if either played LB. and i don't see layzell being integrated in fast enough to displace bronze's starting position by summer, and, well...as a chelsea fan that now watches her each week, that will probably be an issue. is there truly no other uncapped english fullback with the talent to play on the national team? if that is actually true, maybe the answer is to convert a winger to fullback--that's how niamh got there in the first place, that's chelsea's response to charles's injury (by putting baltimore there), and sarina is certainly used to that with daly. plus, england do have such a wealth of options at winger...reminds me of the "saka-at-LB" conversations lmao. out of curiosity, i just looked at defensive action stats for wsl wingers, and no english player really has very good defensive stats (though i think that partly has to do with the league--wingers on good wsl teams don't have to do much defending lmao), but the player with easily the best (in a relative sense) is missy goodwin. coincidentally, her offensive stats are also fairly horrific (though again, stats for players on bad wsl teams tend to suck), which is another indication of a forward that would thrive in defense!
@@waterthecan I think out of Poppy Pattinson, Anouk Denton, and Ella Morris, Morris suits Wiegman's style the best which is why I picked her, but all of them could well play for England at some point. I think there are enough centre backs that can play full back at the moment with Greenwood, Carter, Morgan, Le Tissier, Layzell, but it is a position Wiegman will have to strengthen. There aren't too many young English full backs that have caught my attention to be honest. I think converting a winger to a full back for a tournament is never going to work. Charles has played at full back for years before she was called into the England squad. Rachel Daly is a smart player and it worked out for the Euros, but looking at players like Baltimore, Galton, Bizet, that have all played at full back this season, it's not a good move for the long run. There are established full backs in the WSL like Ashleigh Neville and Hannah Blundell but I'm not sure why they're not being looked at to fill a position with such dire depth (obviously Blundell is out for the time being). Saka at LB is the worst conversation haha I'm glad Southgate didn't do that
@@ShadowFootballYT oh yeah pattinson is a great shout! i've loved watching her this season. i guess what i'm thinking of is more like crystal dunn for the uswnt. she's always been an attacker for club and has even won the nwsl golden boot before lol--but ended up exclusively playing LB for country. (also, i swear saka ended up at LB during the second half of extra time of the euro quarterfinal--or am i hallucinating lmao)
@@waterthecan I guess Rachel Daly was our version of Crystal Dunn, she was pretty solid at LB too. I just feel like positional changes like that were out of necessity rather than a tactical masterclass. Niamh Charles is the nailed on LB if she's fit but other than her I don't think we have much depth. Saka did end up at LB vs Switzerland but that's only because Southgate tried to gamble for the win then rather than in normal time
Happy with the amount of City players here! Layzell, Blindkilde (and Keating) are all starts in the making, the future is bright!
City have a lot of good young players right now! Hopefully they get lots of minutes this season
I also think Sarina has plans for Anna Moorhouse to play a much more featured role in the next euros. She’s the GK for Orlando Pride who are top of the NWSL, and this month she broke the all tie record for clean sheets in a single season (11). An older, mature GK, already with major experience compared to Hampton/Roebuck/Keating.
I think so too, originally she was called into the squad a few months ago due to injury cover, but I think Sarina likes what she saw from Moorhouse, and she wants her keepers to be playing. Considering how she likes to hand out new caps to young players, Moorhouse was one I did not see coming should she make her debut this year.
Great and thoughtful analysis. Good to see you back!
Thank you so much! Took me a while to make this video haha
copyright issues sucks, man. will watch it again and thanks for posting!
Thanks so much! Yeah it's not great to deal with but now I know not to use Champions League footage, which sadly rules out any Champions League analysis.
