Yamaha 300 Outboard 1,000 Hour Maintenance. Condition of old parts.
2014 Yamaha 300 HP.....Here's what the internal anodes/zincs, and the spark plugs look like after 1,110 hours of engine use. The thermostats have about 300 hours, and the water impeller has, I think, 200 hours.

Yamaha Timing Belt, at 1110 Hours. Parker 2520 XLD
มุมมอง 945 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's the timing belt off our 2014 Yamaha 300. It is 10 years old and had 1110 hours on it. It is the original belt. It looks like new except for slightly faded 'timing marks'. The idler-pulleys showed signs of wear and needed replacing. The belt itself looked like it could have gone many more hours/years.... But, is it worth taking the chance? Not to me. Yamaha recommends changing it at 1,000...

I know I've posted similar "Still B_ _ _ _'N About" the non-drained anchor-rode locker on the Parker boats before. Here I was showing the bilge can have over 5 gallons, and the bilge pump won't help as the pump is mounted on an unnecessarily high base.

The only way rain water, and heavy seas water gets into the far aft bilge, is through the hole in the bow where the anchor rode feeds into the rode locker under the windlass. Parker does not have an anchor-rode locker drain, and instead runs the water all the way through the boats bilges. It would make more sense to extract the water at the bow!

      Thank you for watching and 'commenting'... It's a steel Jay Benford Design, built by Florida Bay Coasters. I don't believe they are still in business, but there is a site with used ones. (Google, Florida Bay Coasters). There were numerous sizes of Jay Benford Design boats that were built by numerous companies. This is the only 65' one that was built. Custom Steel Boats in Merritt NC would likely be up to building any of the steel Benford Designs. There was a tragic family loss that occurred there many years ago, but I think they are still in business. Here's some links; facebook.com/customsteelboats/ www.customsteelboats.com/

      Hi Captain Crazy, Thank you for watching and for communicating! This tri-toon, like all boats of this genre have one very weak trait, and that is burying the nose. There is little buoyancy forward, so it's very easy to stick the bow. Other than that it does pretty good; especially in a beam sea.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Lou, thank you for watching and commenting!...Many Parker models were/are available in both Mod-V's and Deep-V's. The best way to determine which is which, is to look at the hull at the bow. If there are two 'lift-strakes' below the water-line, then it is a Deep-V. If there is one 'lift-strake' then it is a Mod-V. Also, there are a lot of different 'degrees' of Deep-V's with different boat manufactures. Some are 'deeper' (sharper) V's than others. The deeper the V, the better the boat rides in a choppy rough, head sea. But, the deeper the V, the worse it rides at rest and/or in a beam sea. When you step aboard a boat with a very deep-V at a dock, the boat will roll to your weight. It will roll less with a mod-V, and roll even less depending on how 'flat' the bottom is. Think of comparing a deep-V with a barge. The barge won't roll, even with a lot of weight, but the barge is not going to cut through steep head-seas.

    Hello, captain. I have 418 hours on my engine and looking at your belt. It looks like almost brand new. Do you think I need to change mine at 500? Hrs

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Capt... I do Not think you need to change your belt (nor the idler pulleys) at 500 hours. I'd at least wait until the Yamaha recommendation of 1,000 hours; maybe longer. After I saw mine (with 1110 hours) I'm half way wishing I had waited for 1200-1400 hours. The main reason I'm happy that I did change them at 1110 hours is that the two idler pulley's DID need changing; or should I say, were in worse shape than the belt itself. And, I'd hate to have my engine blow, because I waited too long to change a belt..... I have some videos coming up to also show, (after 1110 hours) the eight internal anodes, the two thermostats, six spark plugs, water pump impeller and more; I was shocked as to their condition.... There is a well-known local Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda dealer near me. He said they never change timing belts; and implied that they have some with over 2,000 hours. I would NOT take that chance. Maybe he doesn't change the timing belts, as he might sell more new engines, after the other engines blow up! ☺....

    • @OutOnTheReef
      @OutOnTheReef 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrewfyakim525 That is true about the dealer's practice. And yes, I'm glad I saw your video because I was thinking to do mine at 500 hours. And that's too early seeing yours at a thousand one hundred still doing great So I probably will do mine closer to the 1000 hour mark. Or 10 years whatever comes first. And thank you for your awesome video, captain. This shows us how many hours you can put on an engine and I know it varies on RPM. Use.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OutOnTheReefI've since talked to a couple of others who have over 1500 hours on their Yamaha's with the original timing belt. They say their belt is still in good shape. I would not go that far; I think they're stretching the limit and pressing their luck!.... About 1/3 of my running is at 'fast trolling' speed (around 8-9 mph); so that may also play a part. Some folks run wide open more, but I don't ever run full-throttle. I'm usually around 4,000-4,200 rpm... I have a video posted with a guy (his Parker had a custom hard-top over the cockpit) who stopped at my docks on his way from South Carolina, going to Virginia. He told me he runs nearly wide open, full-throttle most all the time, and that he has always done that, and has no problems; everyone has different habits! ☺

      @andrewfyakim525 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Capt... thank you for watching and thank you for communicating. To answer your question as to 'what was your (my) issue?' In my case I operated the windlass with out first untying the anchor rode; the anchor line then spun around and broke the pin off the windlass..... After anchoring, I ALWAYS tie the anchor rode to a cleat, to take the load off of the windlass itself. (This is a standard procedure; highly recommended) . The internal parts of the windlass are Not designed to handle the stress/weight of the boat at anchor, especially of the wind and waves kick up, adding extra stress to the windlass... In your case I suspect you may have bent the other pin inside the windlass. If so, the bent pin is not fixable, and needs to be replaced.... As I mentioned in the video, contact Lewmar for the parts. Their customer-service reps were a great help.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi gpulido, thank you for watching! I've sealed the hole by first using removable 'rope-caulk' under the hatch around the hole opening. (the rope caulk is non-permanent, and is easily replaced when I occasionally open the hatch to clean under the hatch). Then I attached a 'flap' of marine-quality white vinyl rubber over the hole. This keeps the water from entering the anchor-rode locker from that hatch hole. Some water still gets in from the hole under the windlass where the chain and anchor line feeds into the anchor-rode locker. The canvas cover is 90% better than it was without the cover, but some water still gets in there..... I'd love to see some video of your Parker; let me know if you post any on your TH-cam channel.

      High Capt... This boat is a displacement-hull trawler style, with a single Ford Lehman 135 SP Diesel engine; it burned between 1.8 and 2.2 GPH, giving it 4-5 miles per gallon depending on the speed. It had a huge 26/26 prop and a huge rudder which made it very easy to maneuver. It did not have, nor did it need a bow-thruster. Being a near-displacement/non-planing hull it cruised at 8.25 knots, about 9.5 mph at 2200 rpm's. Top speed was only 10.3 knots (about 12 mph).. (The conversion for knots to miles per hour is 1.15). The boat held 300 gallons of Diesel fuel, 200 gallons of water and had an 80 gallon black-water holding tank. It had 3 cabins, two full heads and three (yes three! ☺) showers. (one in both heads and an outside shower on the swim platform). It also had a full galley with 3 burner gas range and oven, microwave, refrigerator and double sink. It had full-boat central air-conditioning and heat via reverse cycle marine water-source heat pump.... All in all we loved the boat for 28 year.... but, (and this is a BIG BUT!☺) we got tired of running so slow, at only 10 mph. We MUCH prefer running 30+ mph with our Parker!

      Hi Capt.... It's great to hear from you!...You are surely right about most boats having some hidden problems or issues.... I have owned more than 15 boats since the 1970's, and most of them had some problems. Some were seriously bad problems, and some easily fixable.... Two brand new boats that we bought had problems; the Albin we bought in Cos Cob Connecticut, and the 35' CT Sundeck Trawler we bought in Deltaville Virginia. I had to fix those problems myself as it was too far away to take the boats back to them to fix them.... The Parker center console in this video has been at Rafcliff Marine a couple times in the last few months. I don't if it's just being worked on, or if it's for sale.... Hi Capt... Here's a link to a video of the CT 35 about a year after we sold it to buy the Parker. th-cam.com/video/mN4UDTrvJKM/w-d-xo.html. We had 28 good years with the CT. As you can see it was a cruising boat. (we used the Avon 310 Rover dinghy for fishing) It was in like-new condition when we owned it; especially the engine room and mechanics. (It was in bads shape in this video; the next owner didn't take care of it) I have hundreds of pictures of the CT and the Albin. If I can learn how to scan them, maybe I could learn how to post those pictures here.@@OutOnTheReef

    Very true cap. Parker did not think of that and 1 of the best solitions is plugging the anchor locker and making a drain opening ti the outside haul and a stainless plate protector and yor problems will be gone cap. And it will cost you only the stainless steel plate cover $25 and i think you will be a happy cap. I know how you feel because thats the reason i keep my boat cover all the time because the windows always leak, parker only knows how to build a strong Crooked Haul 🤣🤣⚓️☠️ thanks for the upload cap and another year comes tomorrow for boating 🚢 👍👍🛥

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Larry, Thank you for checking in on us! This storm had moderate rain, much stronger winds than originally predicted, and much higher water. Our property flooded (as usual! ☺), but no damage, and just a days worth of debris clean up. We lost power for about 6 hours; no biggie as we have a whole-house generator. I did not take the boat out of the water/off the lift. I did add extra lines (I always have 5 lines from the boat to the lift-pilings) and lowered the cockpit Bimini canvas. All-in-all it was no big deal this time. If the storm had stayed on the 'predicted' path, it would have been even much less impact, but late at night it shifted 45 miles west (over Greenville) and that put us on the 'bad' strong side of the storm...

    Hello Andrew, It’s nice to see some new content from you, thank you for sharing. Having water in the bilge after rain is the only thing I can say that I dislike about my 2520XL. One of these days I’m going to have to install a raised floor in the anchor locker and drill and install a clamshell overboard drain.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, good to hear from you! You and I are on the same page. I love our Parker, but I don't like having water migrating from the anchor locker to the aft bilge; it's simply poor design. There's been some discussion about this over at ClassicParker and a couple people have done what you've suggested with raising the floor and adding some sort of drain. I like your idea with the clam-shell to cover the drain hole, in fact our past two boats had that. One recent post at ClassicParker where he raised the locker floor, showed a large bronze fitting for the hole, and no clam shell. I'm afraid that would allow water into the locker when the boats moving. A properly faced clam-shell will keep the water out... I too have this 'project' on my to-do-list.... I hope I live long enough to get it done! ☺

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Danny, Thanks for watching! My window-rubber only failed in both aft, upper corners. It kept 'sagging' and falling out... To fix it, in short, I cut some small lengths of black fuel-line hose/tubing (I cut a few lengths and different diameters to find the tightest fit) and snugly fit it in the aluminum track between the end of the window rubber, and the end of the track. That holds the black window molding in place. It works by 'friction-fitting'.... I had tried a couple adhesives, and they did not work for me. I wouldn't be surprised if black windshield adhesive might help; I just didn't have any to try.... Check out the other video link in the 'comment' above this one; It shows it in place. I used very basic shop tools, and the only 'special' tool might have been that I used my table saw to cut the 'groove' in the back-splash piece. Hi Nicholas, thank you for watching and for communicating! That grab bar came from a night club called the Carolina Opry House, in Greenville, NC. They remodeled the place back in the 1980's, and it was tossed in the trash pile; it was painted white when I got it; I stripped it back to the original stainless steel, and put a red rubber cap on top to keep water out. I installed it upside down like that, as it makes a handy place to hang bags, tools etc when I'm getting on and off the boat.. The same and/or similar stainless-steel 'handicap' bathroom bars are available at most building supply companies.... (by the way, The Carolina Opry House has been closed down since the 1990's).

The older 31 "Moppie" Bertrams, owned and built by Dick Bertram were the first of the deep-V's and are known to be 'tanks' with bullet-proof hulls! They are very heavy, (require high HP engines) and are also 'wet' boats with little bow-flair to throw the water off the boat; but are a smooth ride and can bust through rough seas. There is in fact one of those docked at my neighbors house about 150 feet from my dock.... The 'new Bertrams, are Bertram in name only, They are designed by Bill Prince, are very expensive, and light weight. They are nothing like the old originals...

And raymarine electronics.love the classic lines and the simple way of the design

      @@larryjohnson5597 That is the same model as the one I mentioned that's docked near me. The 31 Bertrams are well-respected boats/hulls. I love the Cummings Diesels; they are 'forever' engines as long as you feed it clean air (easy to do on a boat!), clean fuel (hard to do on a boat) and clean oil (easy to do, especially with auto-oil-change- system like had on our Ford Lehman SP135... I don't know if the sellers 'numbers' are correct, but it's easily verified with a test rum. (30 knots is 34.5 mph... 35 knots is over 40 mph. it sounds a bit 'optimistic' to me ☺)... Like I mentioned, they are considered 'wet' boats, and I'll add a bit wobbly when sitting still due to the extremely deep-V. But then, that deep-V is why it can handle rough waters.... One more thing, with a 1969 boat. How are the fuel tanks? Are they original? Are they clean?

      Yes thanks 🙏 the fule tank is the original 222 gallons it’s fiber glass in the boat Bertram used fiberglass tanks just like hatters, as far as being wet, any thoughts on spray rails, might help? Thanks 😊

      @@larryjohnson5597 The Bertram fiberglass fuel tanks are legendary for being the best fuel tanks, for Diesel fuel. Not so much for gas, especially bad for ethanol-gas. It's why I asked. Some boats with fiberglass tanks had gasoline engines, and the tanks got gummy from ethanol gas. Was this Bertam ever equipped with gas engine/engines? Not many, but some existed. Also, a lot of 31's had twin engines. Is the one you're looking at original to a single Diesel?.... As for spray rails, I'd say if you decide to got that route, I'd recommend against the 'glue-on' type, (They tend to be VERY temporary), and go with the thru-bolts, and use a lot of bolts. I think they would help in moderate conditions, but when it's really sloppy out there, it would still be a wet boat. They guy who has the one docked near me says he just accepts the fact that the Bertram will be 'wet', and forgives that because of all of the positive attributes. The boat is not 'wet' on calm days, and we do have some calm days out there too!... Did I mention that the 31 Bertram is a beautiful boat? Beautiful lines! At least to me....
