Surprises! Aren't surprises fun? Well, maybe as a gift, but not on a gig! It's important to advance a gig to get an understanding not only of expectations of the client, but what equipment to bring, etc to meet those expectations and budget. Sometimes, we don't always get accurate details. This was one of those times... Along those lines, how do we react? Are we a service industry? While the cu...

yikes, I wouldn't have thought 2 of those DXS12 would have been near enough jam for that room, having used them myself. let alone only 1 of them 😬
The subs really do impress me. But for that room going forward, I think I will be going back to 18's. You'll see the 18's in use in an upcoming video
Man - what ever they paid you it wasnt enough! - my back has just twinged watching that - and Im exhausted lol - great work great video - people just dont realise how much effort goes into your whole day - liked!
luckily I have things staged so there isn't too much heavy lifting (dead lifting) anymore. I have spent years streamlining things to get to this point. Hopefully there were some takeaways you can use (other than the amount of work, lol) Thank you for watching and commenting!
Just wandering how much does a company charge for a setup like this for this event
It depends on your local market. Thank you for watching!
@@inthemixls I watched a crew do something very similar for about 6800 in KY for a crow of about 380-400. I thought it was a good price but I also see some crews in similar situations charging half that
Excellent! I agree 100% - we are a service business and taking care of our clients is tops! I've never once had an artist tell me they liked my gear, but I have then regularly tell me that they enjoy working with me. I've worked for 35 years to build a reputation. I protect it at all costs! Enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing and keep it up!
Exactly. Most of my business is word of mouth, and like you, I work hard to keep that reputation. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I’m really curius about the Yamaha or JBL sub Whit te X40? is it ok ? too mush top for them’s ?
absolutely the tops will crush the subs. I run my subs on an aux which allows me to control the volume's to match. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Love the videos. Having the video in the back with the projector so low it just turned into shadow puppets and a disembodied voice.
I agree. With the room size, there wasn't an ideal spot to place the projector with the stands I had. A TV would have been a better solution. Should the business case present itself, I may add one to my inventory for future events. Thank you for watching!
Good video as always, not much space. Greetings Kim from Denmark
Greetings! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I'm a drummer as well as a sound tech, and I can't for the life of me understand why more bands don't use Edrums. I've been playing them live for over 10 yrs now, and they make such a HUGE difference in small rooms just like this. When I saw the "performance area" I immediately thought how great Edrums would be, and then there they were!
EDrums have come a long way! There are a few bands I work with on occasion that use them. For small rooms, nothing is better. The use of Edrums in this space really saved the day. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
What are you rocking for subs? Are those Meyer monitors?
Just checked the description. 😅
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Very good! Edrums saved the day. Ten pounds of poop in a five pound sack. You handled it well.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Nice video..
Thank you for watching and commenting!
friend, hi, I also rent and study to be a sound engineer, if it's not a secret, how much did you earn for this event?)
Are the audiences normally that, er, animated?!
I like the frontal lights you used. May i know what brand and model are they? Like the wash lights facing the band? :) thanks!
The front lights used in this video are typically used as blinders. They go by different descriptions, but you may be able to find them by searching for 2 eye cob light. My brand are just generic, and do cool and warm white colors only.
@@inthemixls thank you. its perfect! looking for that warm amber color only :)
Very satisfying video.. best..
Thank you for watching!
LoL, had to bust your your face blurring skills at the end. Outdoor cold gigs are miserable, I'm surprised at the turnout.
ha! yeah, the parents had not a care in the world.... The temperature wasn't too bad that day, but I've been there. I think my most hated part of cold weather gigs is coiling/uncoiling the cables.
Hey man, are you running analog snakes upstage/downstage from your DL32 or just direct ?
The main subsnake I use is a Whirlwind Drum Drop. It's 12 channels, 8 of those channels are XLR female tails. To catch other odds and ends, I either go direct, or I have two Cat 5 whirlwind boxes (one of which has built in DI's). But all analog to the DL32
@ thank you sir, great job on the videos
Wow that is a couple of long runs of AC even if your using 12 gage wire. How many feet was each of them two runs?
That was my thought too. Voltage drop on that long of a run is going to be pretty significant. Not to mention not a whole lot of amperage available from those 2 outlets. I just ordered a 7500/6000 watt inverter generator, and a 50 amp power distro for my smaller gigs (future-proofing for a bigger generator, or venues with 50 amp 240v). 7500/6000 watts is probably pushing it though, with 2 tops/2 subs/4 monitors/amps/mixer rack. Guess I'll find out! Lol. I also have a 2500 watt LifePO4 battery/inverter setup (3800 watt hours) I could use for monitors/mixer rack/lights, hopefully not causing any ground loop issues... Just started learning about live sound power (I've wired up outlets in my home, that's easy by comparison. Lol).
When I first starting setting up at that location, it was definitely a concern. So much so I had a voltage monitor/regulator on it. Believe or not, the system is efficient enough to be able to handle it. I definitely would not run any larger of a system on it, but luckily, it's not needed there.
Hi mate be good to watch you do drum kit eq with Yamaha de what settings your at on eq Iv same pa but use a berhinger xair 18 struggling to get a big kick drum. sound
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'll see if I can get some of that in future videos
That was terrible weather. I think I would have freaked out more. Well handled.
…also, everytime I hear Tom Perry’s American Girl, I think of Silence of the Lambs for some reason.
Hear that song alot in the cover band circuit! lol
25:26 where did you buy that adaptor to install your lights to the stand?
It's a Gravity Stands Light Stand Reducer Flange (36mm to M10 Male). Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Great content as usual. Please do a video when you open up the sub.
Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to film the driver replacement, but the original driver definitely showed over-excursion. My guess is a pop from a cable ended it. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Definitely include the gear failures (and especially people failures). Those anomalies and how they’re handled are why I watch. Reality TV at its best!
Thank you for watching and commenting! Appreciate it!
I noticed in a couple of questions about cost to do the show that someone else chimed in. He mentioned from $300 to $350 to mix that venue. I wouldn’t be able to justify that price with $40 to $50 thousand dollars worth of equipment. Rental of that alone should come to 400 to 500 dollars. Then add truck expenses and labor and I could easily come up with a minimum of $750 charge. How do you ever replace worn out or broken equipment? Stuff happens. Why do we sound guys accept peanuts for the services worth easily twice, and maybe more? My area in Oklahoma provides me with a minimum of $1250 to $1500 for shows with my $80k equipment I bring. That took many years to get built up from $250 in bars. I don’t do bars since they can’t pay and I do less work, but my P&L statement at the end of the year shows better profit margins. Overall, I find your video very well done (with respect to your equipment and setup process). My system takes about an hour and I have help. There’s a lot here to learn from to pare down how long it takes me to setup. I am a bit medically impaired so I require a helper. No more than 15lbs and right arm not over my head. Been this way for a year. Hope that it comes to an end where I can work normally again.
Great episode!
Things happen. I had a JBL SRX 815 go out on me during a gig. It went into protect mode, I turned it off, turned it back on. It stayed in protect mode so I went to my trailer and got an EV ELX 12 that I use for monitors, replaced the JBL and the show went on. Another time I was doing a brewery and when I was breaking down, I saw one of my subs (JBLSRX818) was unplugged. I thought “who would unplug my sub?”. Then I realized the power cord was still in the handle. I didn’t notice that I never plugged it in. It’s amazing what one sub can actually do. Great video again! Keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
you should set the camera to 60fps it would be a lot easier to watch all the handheld footage
Thank you, I'll try that in future videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!
We all have gear failure, it comes with the job. I use a Midas m32c but have a XR18 in a camera bag for back up. Only two of the many bands I work with need more than 16/6. I use QSC Ksubs (up to four). All purchased used, some over five years ago. I can't recommend them enough. Small footprint, 1K watts, dual 12", casters. No failures to date.
It's nice how over the years the gear has trended towards more compact and lighter. One of my favorite parts about the Yamaha subs is that their cover is designed to stay on. It's nice to not have to find a place to stash covers, especially in smaller venues. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Question for you. I been getting into pa setup lately and i run my tops right and subs left main . Should i just run from xair RL to one sub and come out to tops. Then run a matrix
It depends on what you are trying to do. If you have same manufacturer subs and tops, many of them are designed to come out of the sub and into the tops. Nothing wrong with that approach, and it can save cabling if you only have to run on signal cable from the mixer to the mains. My preference over the years is to run subs on an aux (or in the case of the XM32, Mono). That means I have to run two separate signal cables to the mains (one for sub signal, one for top signal). In my videos, you may notice that I use a 2 channel XLR tail snake. It saves some extra time not have to roll out and coil up extra cables, because now the signal is in one cable (the 2 channel snake). Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I had my DSX 18XLF go down a couple of weeks ago. It was the driver as well. It was covered under warranty and took about a week for the shop to get it and replace it. I don’t clip my speakers. Not sure what happened.
Yeah, I'm not sure either. I don't run these into the limiter. I'm just curious if the pop from someone disconnecting on stage at a prior gig provided enough to move the driver into over excursion. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Things happen, but you handled it like a real pro, great job!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Appreciate it!
As always great information. On your seismic audio power block cable, you're using can you tell how long is it? Also, is there any way you can make a video on the power distribution cables?
It's a 25 ft cable. I'm considering getting the 50 ft version as well. What with regard to power distribution cables would you like to see? A review of the Seismics? Thanks for watching and commenting!
the Yamaha cover is for witch yamaha Box ?
DZR 12. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Amazing video. Didn’t even know half of the thinks do exist 😅 What kind of monitor do you use? I mean the monitor with touch
Hey! Glad you are enjoying the videos! The touch screen monitor is a 15.5 inch Travel touchscreen from Amazon. Thanks for watching!
Sweet show, That's an impressive crowd size for that rig. I bet it's worth it to save up a while longer for those X40's
They've really become my "go to" speakers for all but the largest shows. There are other brands to look at, as Meyers do come with a premium price. But for size and weight, I'm enjoying them!
Whats the ballpark price on those X40's?
I highly recommend reaching out to a dealer for pricing. Thanks for watching!
How much do the X40s cost? I am definitely getting a set i 2025
I recommend reaching out to a dealer for pricing. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
What is the brand of the front lights you used?
If you are asking about the Blinder type lights, they are just a generic brand I purchased a few years ago.
I see both sides of this, easy to work with easier to get work... however quite a few people dont know (or care) how much extra work it is to be accommodating. Its a case by case situation, but you definitely have to look out for yourself. Ask them in a nice way that this wasnt planned for and could they "help" you out monetarily or in trade of some-kind, maybe a higher charge in the future. I personally look at the fact that if they dont value my time and effort and at the least offer the customarily thanks and Im sorry, its time to think about why you are there...
Agreed. There's definitely a line. Sometimes it's educating the client, as they simply may not be aware. Thank you for watching and commenting!
how much for a meyer sound speaker X40 you get?
I recommend reaching out to a Meyer dealer for pricing. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
There's a fine line between being accommodating, and being taken advantage of. Setting up, and tearing down twice is wear and tear on yourself and your equipment
You handled that like a pro. Well done, Sir.
Thank you, I appreciated it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Are there any speakers you could recommend that are similar in size, volume, and coverage to your Meyer ultra x40's? I would like to just be able to use one per side. I see that RCF makes a few wide dispersion compact speakers similar to the Meyer ultra x40's. Thanks
I think the most comparable would be Danley SM80s, but they are not powered, weigh a little more, and don't have the dispersion. I still have dbtechnologies IG3Ts and IG4Ts. They definitely pack a punch, and can be arrayed for larger gigs (2 per side). Till I got the Meyers, I used those. The main reason for getting the Meyers was to have more SPL on a pole without having to double up (groundstack or fly) the IGs. Another option to look at could be the RCF TTW4A's. They have about a 100 degree dispersion, but weigh about 67 lbs.
I use Rockville wireless dongles in my setup. Have had very few issues with it.
Thank you. Rockville definitely makes some affordable stuff. I use their bags for some lighting bars that come out occasionally.
..,and part duece 😅
Using Rockville lighting? I have some of their stuff, and it's pretty good! Edit: watched more video. Didn't realize Chavet made wireless battery lights too!
Yes, these are part of the Chauvet EZlink series. The batteries in these seem to last forever. They have a newer version out now with a USB port to take their Di-Fi. It's a shame they don't build it in, but I get it, it's more $ for them to have them available for purchase separately.
I own the "Mastercraft" brand of boxes like your Milwaukees. They are handy!
The packouts have proven themselves as very versatile. I like that they can break apart for smaller packs, yet stacked and rolled together at events. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
What wireless donner do you use for your wmx1? You had a great distance from the stage!
In this video, I was using the Chauvet Di-Fi, and a generic Wireless DMX I got several years ago. I don't think it had a brand name. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Be interesting to see your drum setting on the desk , kick snare, I have exact same pa But I use berhinger xair 18 desk
Maybe I'll do a future video on some of my go to settings. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@ that would be great. And maybe show how you can record on laptop with reaper thers no videos out tber lives walk thru setting full band set up settings sound che k and recording them on reaper setting on desk and laptop id be very greatfull if you could really would. Thanks for your reply
Do any of the bands you work with ask you for wireless IEM's? Also what brand are those stage wedges? Thanks.
The stage wedges are DbTechnologies FMX series. 10s, 12s, and a 15 at the drums. I do have bands that use IEMs. I have PSM300s racked up with a Behringer SD8, so I can run 3 stereo or 4 mono wireless channels (I have 4 body packs at this point). Thanks for watching and commenting!
