Fez (Fes) Morocco on the Hasselblad X2D Earth Explorer: Morocco Part 5
Final part of my Morocco series with National Geographic! This was a really amazing trip and I hope you all have been enjoying the videos. Fez (Fes) was such a beautiful city and so much fun to explore. The tannery especially was a highlight for me. The Hasselblad X2D medium format camera was again wonderful to use. I love this platform, so I hope you've been enjoying my photos with it!

Photographing the Sawtooth Mountains on Medium Format
The story she tells is interesting. But the video does not even meet a minimum quality standard, poorly exposed and with a wired microphone passing through the image and held in the hand. It is a shame and a disgrace, because in the same interview she highlights her experience as a commercial photographer, which means knowing how to light professionally, that is, well.
😂😂 I’m sorry I have brought such dishonor upon TH-cam. I must atone for my sins.
Another big loom! Yay! The fiber crafts that come out of Morocco are truly beautiful. I think my favorite image from this grouping is the alley with all of the yarns hanging or possibly drying. Looks like the X2D did a fine job on the photos. I just love the color rendering on the Hasselblads.
I had a feeling you'd like that one! And yeah, the handiwork here was really incredible. I'm glad you liked that shot! I *loved* all the colors, so I'm glad I got a shot that came out alright from there. And I agree, the way Hasselblad's color science works is incredible. I rarely do much to "correct" colors in editing.
Sort of sounds like Leica time lines. Sending a camera in for a repair or CLA feels like you sending it into a black hole. At these price points they should have loaner lens or bodies for situations like this that end up taking a long time. But that maybe too much to ask. :).
but did you ask if you could borrow another lens in the meantime. I would do that.
Such BS... they should have a lens for you to use during this time... if you r a pro that's totally unacceptable!!!
Hasselblad screwed up with the CFV backs….because it almost makes portrait mode impossible with an old body, INSTEAD of having a featured ROTATING sensor.
Honestly I just use live view on the CFV and turn the whole camera on its side 😂
Matt, This is another wonderful and informative video in Morocco.. Lots of traditional place and indigenous economic activities are so impressive.. Hope to visit Morocco one day.. Job well done from part one to part five.. Thanks again.. Keep shooting..
Thanks so much, Jae! I'm so glad you enjoyed. Hope you're loving your new X2D!
it's originally overexposed and toned down way too much hence it has these weird patches / artifacts. given the rarity of the interview, should have given her the other pair of that rode mic you have. good content nonetheless
Yeah I was also having issues with the mic, hence me awkwardly holding it between us the whole time. 😅 It was kind of a mess, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to interview her, and I wanted to be respectful of her time and not have her sit there while I tried troubleshooting things. But thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the content of it.
Sorry that the video turned out a little dark! Not sure what happened. Definitely had a few technical difficulties with this video, but hope you enjoy the content all the same!
Such a great interview! Very inspiring and such an awesome career to hear about! Love this video 👏🏻
Glad to hear it! First time doing an interview and had some audio issues, so I’m happy that it was enjoyable.
It is disappointing that Hasselblad is only making 1000 of these and they have given away 20 of them to influencers. Makes me want the camera less
Man I wish I was one of the influencers that got it for free. 😂
I personally think they should have sent you a loaner lens. I work in video production and my aputure distributor gives me loaner demo units when one of my lights needs to go in for repair that takes over a month. But I haven’t had to send a piece of camera equipment in for a long duration.
You gotta have a model that wears 1920 costumers, next to your building and 1930 vehicle in this video, and a model wears motorcycle rider costume
I think it would be really fun to work with more models, but most of the time I’m just wandering around on my own. That would be a cool shot though!
This did not put me off from go for Hasselblad if I get the possibility to buy one. But I do think they should bring back the the ability to service lenses to Sweden. And also as alot of people have suggested, that in cases of services that drags out over a month, they should offer a loner or just change out the lens. The small cost for them to just change out the lens would be a win in customer happiness. Why not just have a change out system support. If it brakes within a year, just change out the lens. After the guarantee is out. Offer a service support fee, if they cant fix it within a week the service is free or get a refurbished like new lens back.
Agreed on all points. I’m still going to be shooting Hasselblad; I love the cameras and lenses. But it would have been nice to have something to have as a temporary replacement during the repair time or something else to help support, which I think would be well within their ability to do.
Unacceptable. The original Hasselblad company would NEVER have left you in such a predicament. "Hasselblad" in name only.
Thank you for taking us on this adventure with you, it’s been incredible so far.
So glad you’re enjoying!
Professional? Really!
8:42 Professionals taking paid gigs with that kind of gear can rent the gear they need for a shoot and bill the expense through to the client. And professionals who rely on this gear on a daily basis for project work will budget for redundancy in the gear they use - yes, that means two bodies and lens options to always have redundancy.
So lucky that you were able to experience the water remnants. It’s one of those rare events. The X2D captured your photos beautifully. There is a lot to be said about the Hassy color science. Looking forward to Fes.
Yeah I felt very fortunate to have been there for that. And thank you! I agree their HNCS is really special.
That morning light ………
Right?? I felt so lucky and grateful that I woke up in time to see that.
Great video.. though I felt things were in rush for doing amazing landscape photography
They absolutely were. That was a big challenge of this trip unfortunately. I didn’t have a lot of time to shoot since we were often on the move. But I’m glad you enjoyed the video anyway!
Love this. I’m in Dubai and will be taking a similar ride in the dunes tomorrow. Inspiring and what I can do with the Insta360. I’m jealous of all of the water. I’m a sucker for reflection photography and it’s bone-dry here.
Thanks Adam! Oh man, I hope you have an amazing time and that Dubai has been spectacular. Would love to see your shots from the trip!
Some nice photography! What an experience!
Thank you! Yeah it really was. That was my favorite day of the trip for sure.
Did they offer to loan you a lens while it was being repaired?
No, I would have loved if they did, but I was just out a lens for that time.
I live in Germany and gave my Leica M10 for a repair to Wetzlar (approx. 200km distance). I waited also 3-4 Months for the repair of a circuit board. I have also a XCD55 2.5 and I hope for the best :D
Oh man that’s even worse when it feels like your own backyard 😅. Genuinely I think the lens is amazing so I’m sure you’ll get use out of it!
just discovered you and have to say, i enjoy your content very much and your honest reviews, its not all honey with hazelblood but im sure ill get me one too, at least i know what i will be buying and what i can expect
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that. I know the videos themselves are rough because I’m very new to making them, but I hope the content of them is enough to keep people interested. If there’s anything specific you’d like to see in a future video, please let me know and I’ll see if I can make it happen!
I’m sticking to Nikon lol 😆
Hello… Thank you for your video. I’m going through a similar situation but for a very different reason with the 55mm F/2.5 V lens. The lens cannot zone focus using DOF in full manual mode. Regardless of aperture setting the lens will render out of focus at infinity. I’m certain that many photographers don’t use zone focusing often or at all and tend to rely more on autofocus… which does work great. I believe that some or all of these lenses are either mis-calibrated or there is a design flaw in the manual focus mechanism. Two of these lenses on two different X2Ds have this issue. I have a case with Hasselblad open. The second lens tested was Hasselblad’s North American Sales Representative! He’s currently now on the case with Sweden. So if everyone with this lens could test their 55 V lenses using DOF markings and check the resultant focus at infinity it would be very interesting to see to what extent this is occurring.
It’s the same with Leica, took then 6 months to repair one of my lenses. Personally, I would not have bought a duplicate lens, I would have rented one as needed for paying gigs only.
But when there's long lead time for repairs Leica will often loan you something whilst you wait.
If you do not like this, do not buy a Leica either. I have had good turnaround with Leica gear..I have spare Leica gear for everything since I used it for decades.
They should have sent you a replacement for sure. Glad your issues were finally solved... but after 5 months?
I don't understand why like 50 percent of reviewers I watch over edit their videos. Clipping the video every other line is super hard to watch. Id rather see mistakes then that
For sure man I'll just upload a 30 min video with dead air, mistakes, me figuring out what I wanna say, and bad takes when most viewers don't watch more than 4 minutes anyway. Trust me if I thought anyone would watch that, it would save me a lot of time.
@PavornocPhotography cool, way to take criticism. How about figuring out what your going to say before recording the video. Or making smoother transitions. I liked the content, but I would not watch another of your videos do to this. You should want to attract new customers, especially someone like me that watches a lot of this kind of content
Part of receiving criticism is knowing you can't please everyone. And you didn't even offer criticism in your first comment, you just complained about the video. Your second comment actually had some suggestions and constructive criticism, so thank you for the thoughts. I'm glad you liked the content, but I'm not a reviewer, so my channel probably wouldn't appeal to you anyway if that's what you're looking for.
The only thing I was interested in this video was the comparison of the screen/viewfinder (ground glass) and the image quality. That’s not here.
I'm sorry that my video, which wasn't about that, didn't cover that one specific thing. I'll try harder in the future.
Due to the heavy use nature of my work, I moved into the Hasselblad system through multiple X1DII and low usage HC/HCD lenses, mostly orange dot. They have been absolutely incredible and reliant, stories like this gives me survivors guilt. You did everything right and you are an excellent customer, they should have taken care of you by a straight replacement or a loaner.
Ah thank you, I appreciate that! I wouldn't feel guilty though! I'm glad that you never had an experience like that, and I hope mine was a rare case. Like I said in the video, I still love Hasselblad and will continue using their gear, I just felt like I should post the video sharing my experience as a caution for anyone else in case they find themselves in a similar situation.
Thanks for the video. It’s always interesting to see how different manufacturers handle repairs. I’ll just say it could have been worse for you. I had a €4,500 Sony A7RV that had a defective touchscreen two months after purchase. The repair service diagnosed a non-existent water damage without even opening the camera and replaced a non-defective part that I then had to pay for-€350. They took almost three months to find the error and didn’t repair a front dial that was definitely broken as well. No apology, no loaner device, nothing. By far the worst repair service I’ve experienced across three camera brands. So if that’s all that happened with Hasselblad, I would definitely stick with them. :D
Oof, I'm really sorry you had that experience. I'm not a huge Sony fan, but that's still surprising to hear. I'm really glad that I didn't have to pay anything throughout this process. Haha and yeah, as I said in the video, I'll still be sticking with Hasselblad. Love the cameras, and no brand is perfect.
Wow I have both those cameras and this video is really concerning. They should have just replaced it. For goodness sake. 😮
I didn't necessarily mean to scare anyone off Hasselblad. I still love the brand and their products. But I did want to share my experience in case anyone is relying on this gear for the livelihood.
The biggest problem with "Hasselblad" today is that it is NOT Hasselblad ! It is Chinese DJI and they ditched either cut down or ditches services in several countries, plus prices are too high for what you not get ! I used HASSELBLAD 6c6 Cameras in the 1980´s and 1990´s, back then you could trust the quality and the service was superb. I do not trust Chines products, I hear it is the same problem with "Volvo" cars. Get a Japanese Fuji GFX camera.
I totally agree, although the "Japanese" lens manufacturer he keeps referring to, is Fuji. First World problems make me cry tears of joy.
Years ago when I shot with Sony I had a 24-70 lens that after 3 months of ownership the focusing mechanism broke. As with your Hasselblad experience it was under warranty. Sony support was ok to work with but it took them two and a half months to get the lens back to me. Shortly after that I left Sony for Canon. It was not due to this but other reasons. I had the luck to be able to shoot with a Canon R6 for a few hours from someone that i knew. I love long exposure photography and the bulb timer built into the menu system is just perfect for that. So about 6 months later I made the switch. Back to why i posted this. Sony is a big brand as you mentioned but it took them for ever to get the lens back to me.
That’s unfortunate that not even they are immune from things like this. If I was someone relying on this gear to make a living, that would really be an issue.
Not acceptable at all. I hope I don’t get the same problem.
ever since I noted FREE Hassies to TH-camrs, I smelt something horrible! Delays at Hasselblood and Leica are simply unacceptable..
You just convinced me not to pull the trigger on getting a Hasselblad.
Humble 🔥.
a great backup is to use rental companies that offer this type of lens on as need-basis
For the price, they should offer replacements and resell the refurbished units. Or at least offer a better additional paid warranty that covers replacements.
Sometimes you have to be tough with companies. They only care about their own interests.
I think you should have been more firm with them for this delay, they should have compensated you or even given you a replacement lens especially since this lens is expensive and should have been worth its price. Maybe if you threatened to sue them they would have given you a new one instead of your lens?
In Europe you're not allowed to let your customers stranded for 5 months, it's 30 days or money back
Once again, Europe doing things better than America. 😅
blah blah blah............BORING..........Waste of time video
