Finding Your Way: Do What Works for You
One thing I have found to be true - in parenting and homeschooling - is that you have to do what works for you.
So, when it comes to homeschool what do you do? Whether it's school-at-home or Montessori or a mix of many different things, you HAVE to do what works for you for homeschool to be successful and happy.
Here are the key principles to do what works for you.
00:00 Intro
01:01 Do what works for you
04:28 Know yourself
05:30 Know your children
06:43 Be willing to not do the norm
07:53 Give yourself permission to make change
08:58 Be together as a family

    to any student who have a say in what they learn about DO NOT do the family and consumer science unless you wanna answer super intrusive question which reminder your teacher/parent will read i chose it thinking "Hey thats like cooking and stuff" but nope cooking's like 5% of it and now i"m stuck staring at questions like "WhAt StReNgTh Do YoU sEe In OtHeRs Do YoU wIsH yOu HaD" the whole thing is basically a trap into a mental asylum considering most home schoolers have a crappy lonely life where parents throw crap at you and expect you to learn and have a happy life without anybody your age to be friends with and in most cases tore you away from the friends and life you did have but you know "home schoolers are smarter and happier" yet we have no clue how to talk to people i've legit had panic attacks trying to talk to someone at a front desk but we are "So PrEpArEd FoR liFe"

    I love the Making good choices seria. Because after reading the beginning kids decide what will happen and they see the result and we can talk about it If they make a bad decision it is easier to just turn the page and make a better decision. For critical thinking, tolerance, character building and to reduce stress about common situations before it's come up.

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@srayec.7741 I think that it would work, as you can set your own pace and only move forward when it's right for your child. You can pick the grade level too. To me, being able to homeschool and tweak curriculum for a child with learning issues is wonderful. You don't have to do all the activities or you can limit how much they have to do for each one. I like masterbooks and it could work, if you're willing to go through and make the adaptations you need.

    I just started my two oldest with Mia and they both LOVE it. I will say that without the PDFs (which we use with every class) the material is a bit light, so I recommend doing the paper work and if needed, reinforce with videos or further instruction from you. I took us about 3 days to get into the rhythm of things, but overall I give this a thumbs up. Before this they did two years in Connections Academy and two years with the good and the beautiful. Connections really stressed my daughter out with the tests and projects, and it was definitely a bit intense for my son who was only in kindergarten when we started. Now, the good and the beautiful was a much better fit for us, but it can take a lot of time if you want to teach this properly, particularly the history and science portions. I think for us Mia is a happy middle at the moment. I hope they can have the best experience possible.

    U just got a key thing wrong. Yes the family is the first instance of socialisathion and builds the foundation. BUT its ONLY the foundation. A child learns a lot more in school than just math and stuff. Kids need to have interaction with peers. Ofc there is a difference between just hanging out and a place like the school, where they are with other kids and sth like discipline. Plus the school has sth that u call the hidden plan in social science. This hidden plan includes things as inside jokes, memes, games and interest and in general the zeitgeist of your own generation. Its rly selfish in a way saying your kid doesnt need these things. But anyway as a swiss person this is one of the most american videos ive ever seen 😂 i came across this video because im writing a paper about socialisation of homeschool kids for uni. P.s. im not writing this to say you are a bad mom or anything but rather to let you know that u got a key thing about socialisation in schools wrong. Peers are essential for a propper socialisation of a kid

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@LDEtheReal I get what you're saying, but I also come at this as having been raised in schools, been a classroom teacher for years in a number of countries, and am not American. I have actually seen that the socialization of homeschoolers in the last decade (when done right, as in the parents don't isolate) to be better than what is available in schools. Not just in my daughters but others around us and especially in light of how schools are geared these days (esp in America but looking at the global trend). I think it's great you're doing a paper on this subject. I encourage you to talk to homeschool families and see what they are doing for their children and peer interaction.

    I've used both Power Homeschool and the Acellus Academy. Overall it's a great program. For parents that want to homeschool and are afraid to dive in blind, this would be great. I used the program when I had to care for my Mom on hospice for a year and again when my husband passed away. Life was just too busy for me to homeschool and my children needed something they could do independently. They enjoyed the teachers and the short video lessons. Now with that being said, I feel there is a bit of a gap in the reading and it can be hard on struggling readers. There is little to no writing and this is one of the reasons I cancelled the program. I feel children learn so much better and fast with good old fashioned pencil and paper. (At least this has been my experience homeschooling 7 children over the span of 24 years) The Acellus Academy can be pricey close to $300 a month per student for a fully accredited program. They do offer a scholarship for the Acellus Academy which lowers the cost to $78 a month. All you need to do for the scholarship is to have your student watch one science video a week and log in. Pretty simple. Your review was true to what the program is like.

    Just starting research, have a son with ADD and has had an IEP since 1st grade. He is entering 9th grade public high school and we are so tired of trying to put a square peg in a round hole. IEP in our county has been pretty good, he makes A's and B's and has no behavioral issues. He has been bullied and the social anxiety is can be crippling. For years we've pushed him to go and continue to tell him he can do hard things. We feel he is mature enough now to handle doing an online education. Our biggest concern is having to be his teacher, we both work from home and certainly not teachers! We have a friend that had success in time 4 learning so we're considering it. I love your videos! In Hungry there is a proverb. "Small child creates small problems Big child creates big problems" The parenting advice I don't agree with is that we must eat healthy all the time and if we eat anything with preservatives our kids will die. I think the most important is to have a balanced diet If they eat a lollipop instead of a salad once a week we don't destroy their life rather put some fun in it.

    I would love a video on your insights on CRT. I raised my children at the kitchen table and with 8 children it was more of a small schoolhouse environment. 😊 Still, my answer to some of their inquiries was often "Think it through" in the hopes of developing their critical thinking skills. My older set of children are engineers and data analytics folks now, but teaching them to think "out of the box" is one of the many beauties of homeschooling. Also, I love that you are traveling with your children and exploring other cultures with them. We did this with our children over the years and it was extremely insightful. In fact, for a few years we hosted 4 Chinese students for the summers to introduce our children to the Asian culture. Then they were able to visit China on a mission trip and visited with two of the exchange students that had stayed in our home. Thank you for your service to the homeschool community. Homeschooling is close to my heart. It has been a joy watching your videos. Blessings🌺

      I personally think that CRT is good and think we should be teaching it. I spent time with a sociology professor to learn more about it and what "some" people are presenting it as, and the fact that it is being taught even at elementary level is wrong.....but I think that we should teach it. There are differences in how people are treated based on the color of their skin. It is historical and it is present. We need to learn, to know and to act. I think that it is great you have introduced cultures with your children. I have been to China twice and look forward to taking my girls. I love your reviews. So balanced. We did Mia for a year and half (1/2 of 2nd grade, all of 3rd), it really saved me from crisis mode of "WHAT AM I DOING?! AM I DOING A HORRIBLE JOB!?" and brought back my LOVE of the opportunity of home education. It was great to be able to pull up from grades below things that we missed or needed more reinforcement or pull down from the grade above for subjects she was excelling in. I will note that If you don't do the accompanying printables to reinforce each lesson it can be VERY LIGHT material, with the focus being highly on incredibly repetitive quizzes (for 2nd it felt appropriate, by 3rd it felt far too light). We are switching to Moving Beyond the Page for 4th and after seeing your review on that I'm SO excited to do so, but it feels great to have Mia in my back pocket if we need it to rescue us again!
