How to Make a Textured Sweater Mug from a Slab
In this video, I show you how I make a mug using a sweater fondant mold from www.marvelousmolds.com, which is normally used for cake making! I take the cylinder I create and put it on the pottery wheel to shape it. At first glance, it will look like it was thrown on the pottery wheel! But if you look closely, you would be able to see the seam. A really fun way to add texture to a mug!
I would also like to give a shout out to potter Jessica Putnam Phillips of www.clayshare.com, where I first learned about the sweater molds. If you don't already follow her, you should!

How tall is your cylinder?
what type of clay do you recommend for making bisque slump molds?
Very great video, iapprwcuate you for sharing!
Oh, dust with cornstarch for easy release!
I learned more in half a video than i did in a 10 week class at my local museum. Thanks for all the details about your construction.
Why is everything a 1/4? is it done to annoy. If so stay off my site.👎
Can we get your template?
I would love template as well
Thanks for sharing. Lots of new tricks coming into my mind while watching your video. I'm eagerly waiting to do that.😊
Wow. Great tutorial!
I am not a beginner, but I have so much trouble with air bubbles. I am a hand builder you gave me some good pointers. I appreciate it. Thank you.
Thanks. Where do u get signature stamp?
olá de Portugal! Gosto de muito os seus vídeos! Can you share your slip recipe? I made a first batch with 4 squares of toilet paper and 1.5 cups vinegar, mixed with immersion blender. Then added my bone dry clay bits. It is very thick now and not at all like yours. Help!!
I am a new subscriber- just love your methodical teaching method.
Love the vase. It reminds me of a cowboy saloon girl dress! Beautiful
Underglaze doesn’t stick to kiln shelves? I’m still learning!
❤
i want to make these! will they work with gelli prints or ink pads?
How can I get your templates
Beautiful piece... Has an Asian flair🎉❤😅
You are awesome! Great descriptions. Thank you!
Thank you!
Merci !!!😂
How do you make your cylinders
I have a large extruder. You could make them by wrapping a slab around a tube though I have never done that myself.
Hi that's beautiful. I can see it's hard to do...
Thank you! When you've done a bunch you would get the hang of it. But yes initially it is hard to do
Great video thank you 😊
Thank you!
Brilliant thank you 😊
Glad you like the video
Does the shrinkage rate change within the same clay body depending on the batch? For example, I bought a clay body from Laguna clay and it has a shrinkate rate of 10% +/- 2%. After using the clay, I discovered it has a shrinkage rate of 12%. If I buy a new bag of this same clay body from Laguna, will it always have a 12% shrinkage rate or could the next bag have a 8% shrinkage rate? Thank you so much for all your lovely videos.
I don't really no. I haven't really checked shrinkage on my clay that much. I think the shrinkage is more of an estimate because I would guess it depends on how much moisture there is in the clay, and maybe other factors. But I'm sorry to say I don't really know. So glad you like the videos!
Can you give the sizes of the templates for this container...pls
Sorry that I missed your initial comment. If you go to my website www.andreaakeribpottery.com you will find the templates there in the hand made tools section
I realize this is older... But the actual vessel appears quite nearer leathery... But the lid seems more wet, especially after sponge-indenting the lid... How do you be sure that they will dry and kill to the same size?
Because it's not a really tight fit it's never been an issue.
love the stamp where to get?
Thank you. I made the stamp. I think I show this one in the stamp making video but I'm not 100% sure. It's been a while since I looked. :-)
This is awesome. So glad I found you. Hope to see some new videos of yours too. I appreciate your honest comments and sharing your creative visions. Thank you so much!
So glad you enjoyed the videos. I am hoping to start making videos again this winter.
I always round the ends off so I don’t get the indents when ibrollnthem
Good idea!
I am going to give it a try but I am a little nervous as I don’t know any magic spells. Why do you require incantations?
Hi Andrea, I've been going to weekly pottery lessons for nearly a year, here in England (I'm now retired from work). My next project is a tea caddy. Your design has given me a lot of ideas and inspiration. Thanks for a wonderful, fun and well presented video. 🧡
So glad to hear that! Let me know what you end up making!
Love the box. Where can I find a copy of the templates.
@@jgermano22ify I have measurements and pictures on my website andreaakeribpottery.com. You should be able to make your own from that info. 😁
Hi Andrea...everything is so good to see and learn as well..I am also a clay artist from Pakistan. Where is your studio..please put comment..Regsrds, Riaz
I am in the US. Glad you like the videos!
another thing you can do is take your star buck cup and set it in you clay cup it will keep your clay cup nice and round.
I wasn't at the time but I now use yogurt cups to keep them around
Thank you I think this old bloke might have a go at this one.😘
Did you give it a try?
I just found your channel and have been binge watching as I work in my studio. What a great tip: as you’re making the foot tiring, check the depth by placing one index finger inside the ring and the other outside, on the shoulder. They should be the same height. Brilliant! Thanks!
Glad you are finding the videos helpful!
Amazing bowl😊
Thank you!
I do a similar process but if you will shape a wooden spoon to the profile you desire and use it to push out the belly instead of the rib you will have better results and less difficult. ;-)
Cool idea. I will have to look in my kitchen. 😆
What is the actual problem with air bubbles? Someone told me that they cause the item to explode in the kiln, but I've never seen that happen, and I can't believe that we've all gotten 100% of the air bubbles out of our clay.
They don’t explode (water does that, but not air) but they will expand (as hot air does) in the kiln and show in the walls. It’s noticeable and worth avoiding. They can also mess with your pulls and create uneven walls as well.
Most important is the size of the hole...every bird has its own size...
Agree. 🙂
Hola, bellísimo trabajo 🤩👌Gracias por compartir el paso a paso He tomado nota de todo y lo intentaré hacer Gracias por tu generosidad bello persona ☺☺🙋♀️
Good to hear! Have you given it a try yet?

I do not have a slab roller and I’m wondering how many pounds of you started with
Sorry for missing this message. I don't have a slab roller either. I think I probably used a quarter of a bag to make the slab but I don't remember for sure
Hola le quedó hermoso y quiciera si puede compartir los moldes de sus jarrones gracias saludos de argentina
Wonderful!!!
Thanks!
Great project. What is that tool you use for cutting the 45 degree angle?
I’ve really enjoyed many of your hand building carving and texture technique videos. I hope you are well, and still potting. Have you found any cutting tool other than scissors or exact blade for cutting the foam sheet? What glue do you use when the adhesive loses its stickiness? Thanks! Etana in Florida
I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! I actually took a year-long break for some life changes and then started making videos again but haven't put them together! I really need to do that. I still just use scissors. I used foam that had stickiness on it already. They're two different kinds that you can get. The sheet that isn't sticky and then sheets that are. You can even find pre-cut items that you can stick to the foam sheets
Xiem is pronounced sim, as in simmer. I know this as my instructor used to work there.
I did learn the correct pronunciation when I was at NCECA. 😁
Lovely project! I think I will try this. WhT is the tool that you used to cut the homes called? Thank you.😊
Do you mean the bevel cutter? It is from Xiem and most pottery places sell it
Hi, thankyou for your very detailed videos. As a newbie it really helps. What do you call the tool you used to cut the angles on the ends?
