This channel is focused on the creative aspects of aerial dance.
I’m an aerial hobbyist who loves all forms of dance. I started dancing at the age of 2 and never stopped! (if you can call toddlers running around in leotards dancing 😂)
I mainly train on the Lyra (aerial hoop), and cross-train on aerial sling/aerial hammock. I’ve taken intro classes for all the common apparatuses, and each has given me a new outlook on movement. Lyra ultimately won my heart, though ❤️
Join me on my journey to becoming a better performer! ...And getting back in shape. Anyone else lose all their strength during the pandemic??
-----------
Obligatory aerial safety reminders:
- Try new moves under the supervision of a professional aerial instructor
- Warm-up before practicing
- Use a crash mat
- Consult a professional rigger/structural engineer before rigging at home
- Listen to your body

Stretching Tips & Tricks if You're NOT Flexible | How I modify stretches
Today, I'm sharing some stretching tips & tricks for inflexible aerialists. We all have our strength and weaknesses, and flexibility has never come easy for me. To get the correct body alignment and not be uncomfortable when I stretch, I use yoga blocks, a yoga strap, and a wash cloth.

Today, I want to share my Lyra progress with you. Like many aerialists, the pandemic has meant that I haven’t been able to go to the studio. And to be honest, after a few months of lockdown, I gave up trying to stay in aerial shape - or frankly any shape at all. I knew I would be starting from zero when I was able to go back to the studio and this was little daunting because I built up my stren...

What am I doing wrong? Whenever I try to do the trapeze mount, I can pull my knees to my chest but then I can't magically somersault backwards like how everyone else does. It literally feels like I'm trying to do something impossible I saw in a cartoon. How do I actually turn upside down instead of hanging there and just moving my legs? Do I just need to have elbows for shoulders?
It’s hard to get the movement pathway the first few times for sure. A couple things that help- being able to hold your chin above the bar for a few seconds and being able to do a controlled pull-up negative. If you can do both of those you should have the strength because to be able to rock back you have to be able to lower a bit without entirely straightening your arms. To understand the movement pathway you can do a negative version of the trapeze mount. That would be a double knee hang, grab the bar on either side of your knees, extend the legs to pike, pull legs through your arms, and pull up so your chin is above the bar like the top of a pull up. Another helpful exercise is something I’ve heard called rock and rolls. You start with your chin above the bar and your knees tucked to your chest, then you rock back to touch your ankles to the bar without trying to bring them under the hoop, then you return back to chin above the bar with knees tucked. If you’re having trouble with the initial rock back you could try starting with the negative version. Good luck! Different things click with different people. Even having an instructor spot you through the rock back could help.
"Keep the strawberries in the basket" is trying to give you a visual of your pelvic bowl to keep it level/no tipping hips forward or back to spill the strawberries.
What is the weight limit for this?
Hi! Thanks for the video. I've never had a class before and was able to do the Delilah on my own, but I was nervous to try to flip myself around to sit on the hoop. So I have my first class on Sunday... Hoping that mount is easier than it looks!
Exciting! Hope you enjoy your first class!
So helpful I was relying completely on my upper body to mount and have back pain 😢 thanks for the tips 😊
Taking your strategies to my open training tonight as I want to practice my mounts 😂🎉❤❤
Where did you get your foldable crash pads ?
Wooooow!!! I never was taught about the importance of my legs. That’s amazing. Thank you.
Hey there! Wonderful video. Where is your rig from ?
Thank you! The rig you see in this video is the Ludwig rig made by Vvolfy which I go in to details about in th-cam.com/video/GvIGEOCuVkE/w-d-xo.html
What's the foot print with a 6 foot header at 7 foot high

Hi, I’m curious how do you overcome your fear of being in the air and if you’re above the ground?
Hi! A few things- I find it less scary when I’m strong enough to hold myself up, so regular training helps. Usually studios have things rigged low for beginners, so you aren’t far from the ground to begin with. I’m also not afraid of heights, so I imagine it’s different for people who come in with that fear!
@@LyraLauren I admire this, as you can picture I am afraid being up so high above the ground, so these are good insights. I hope you will still make more of these videos, such as foods to eat for training and if there’s a cheat day or what is the toughest challenge you’ve done, I’m curious, anyways thank you so much for answering, I appreciate you responding and you have an amazing job!
I wasn't taught to use my legs !!! These are really good tips
Excellent video
Thanks Jacqueline!
Hello! I am just getting started and wanting to introduce lyra to my studio. I know this video is older but it was extremely helpful so I hope you see this comment! What is the A-frame that you are using what what hoops/rigging equipment do you recommend? Thank you so much!
Hi there! I have a whole video about the rig that goes through all its info - Ludwig Aerial Rig: Unboxing and First Impressions th-cam.com/video/GvIGEOCuVkE/w-d-xo.html Best of luck with your studio!
Thank you so much Lauren! @@LyraLauren
Love this! Would love a tutorial of this flow!!
thank you so much for sharing. Can I please ask you what type of crash. matts do you recommend to get?
Hi Lilly! I got my crash mats from a U.S. based gymnastics company called Z Athletic. If you’re staying low like my setup, most people opt for 4in mats. Bouldering mats are popular for low height setups too. If you’re going higher you probably want 8in or even 12in mats. You can always ask your studio what mats they use/recommend as they’ll be more knowledgeable than me :)
Which material is ur Aerial hoop ? I just bought one it is metal and hurt my hands a lot😬
Hi JDa’ N! I have a hollow steel hoop that’s powder-coated. What about your hoop hurts your hands?
@@LyraLauren it is steel hoop. I bought it because u. Like ur videos and decide to learn. I didn't know i have to use the power coated🤔😊
You don’t need it to be powder-coated! It just takes awhile to build up calluses on your hands, so it doesn’t irritate the skin. Hope you’re able to work with an instructor near you! Happy you found aerials!
This was so helpful thank you!
Glad to hear it ☺️
The “use your legs because they’re stronger” is so important. I wasn’t taught that in class so I use like all arms and it’s very fatiguing. This will make such a big difference for me. Thanks!
Very helpful!

Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. What rig are you using? Thanks!
Hey Maeve! The rig in the video is Uplift Active’s rig. I have a video reviewing it with more details if you’re interested! th-cam.com/video/8C-eJNYNsu0/w-d-xo.html
Ужасно
Pleasee Lyra, Could you create some more videos? i recently find you and I start a begginer classes about this. I hope that you read me, thank you 😊
Hi ! What is the brand of your gate please? Thank u very much 😊
Hi Marina! What brand are you interested in? The rig?
@@LyraLauren Sorry I'm using the translator, I'm talking about the structure that supports the hoop 😊
Oh, gotcha! It’s a Ludwig rig made by Vvolfy. I talk about it in this video: th-cam.com/video/GvIGEOCuVkE/w-d-xo.html
Great job
you are so amazing!!! but when I see you I can feel you so much, I also have a little space (my cealing is probably even lower, even though I don’t need the construction) + I also have a short hoop …so I am happy that I can see someone else getting the most out of it!! <3
Aw, thanks Ali! I’m glad you’ve found a setup that works for you!
Thank you for this video! It's comprehensive and I found the tips helpful for beginners
Thanks Amanda! I’m glad you found it helpful ☺️
Beautifull 🤩
Thank you for this informative video. I’m still new to aerial hoop, and I’m working on my straddle mount (I have yet to actually do it, because my arm-muscles are still pretty weak😅), but I’m gonna try the “negative” the next time, to at least get the feeling of where I’m supposed to be
You’ve got the right mindset 💪 Straddle mount is a tough one!
Hello at what age can you start doing this exercise? And is there a way to buy it online? I want to learn but I've never done it before.
Hi Dicotomia! You can start at any age and the best way to start is by going to a studio. It’s very expensive to buy safe gear, and it’s easy to hurt yourself if you start without instruction, so it’s not recommended to self teach. One of the best parts about aerial is the community so you don’t want to miss out on that either :)
@@LyraLauren oh! Thank you so much ! 🤗 I'm glad you warned me it would be bad to hurt me.
I emailed customer service and asked what the foot print would be…. They said 9x13ft. They were wrong.
Oof. You realized the footprint was different after you bought it?
The 11ft rig is actually only 9’4” and even at that height it’s 13’8” across. I talked to their customer service rep about it and she said they didn’t know it was that short or that wide. I guess they never measured their product.
Wow, that’s crazy! I _think_ mine goes higher than 9’4”, but I can’t check it since my ceiling is 10ft…
My teacher instructs me to mount the hoop using arm methods only. She corrects me if I try to use my legs to mount which feels and looks more natural to me. Not sure of her purpose for this..possibly so I can gain upper body strength? By the end of the class I’m so wore out and can’t hardly lift myself anymore
Sounds like your teacher hasn’t explained why they don’t want you to use your legs, so I’d recommend asking! It sounds exhausting…you must be quite strong!
Which hoop do you By it look very good in the room
Thanks Luna! My hoop is from Firetoys with a sparkle white powder coating.
Where did you get your Lyra setup from?
Hi! I talk about my rig in this video: Ludwig Aerial Rig: Unboxing and First Impressions th-cam.com/video/GvIGEOCuVkE/w-d-xo.html
Wow your so good
Aw thanks ☺️
I like your videos so much, please make more!
Thanks Fatmah! Are there any topics you’re particularly interested in?
@@LyraLauren yes thank you for asking! What are some beautiful transition moves, how to create shapes in between hard poses during a routine. Which muscle groups are active during certain poses, for example during amazon you pull with one arm and push with the other. Also what are some tips to control nausea while spinning. When is the best time to eat before practice? 🖤
2000! Jeebus…
Yeah, rigs are not very affordable :/
I was taught to pull up instead
Hi Yuuki! What mount were taught to pull up for?
@@LyraLauren from a straddle
If you were using an aerial silk, would you be able to do drops and spin on this rig?
Hi! Yes, the rig is rated for drops, but you’d need to have to set higher than I do to do drops on silks.
What mat brand do you use?(:
Hi Violet! My mats are from Z Athletic: zathletic.net/landing-mats/z-athletic-6ft-x-3ft-x-4in-landing-mat-crash-mat
Which crash mats do you use?
Hi Olivia! I have two of these zathletic.net/landing-mats/z-athletic-6ft-x-3ft-x-4in-landing-mat-crash-mat
The last tip about the toes was so helpful! Thanksss
Hi Lyra! I am thinking about starting hoops, but I have a concern my hands are not strong enough for the exercies. I am training and I am kind of fit, but for example I can't pull myself and struggle with planks and push ups. Would you advise me to start and with time I'll have more power or maybe to build up more strength first and then start? Thank you! 💜
Great question, Scarlet! I’d recommend going to a class and see how it goes. The intro classes are a perfect way to learn the exercises that will help build the muscles you’ll need. Most people I know didn’t have a lot of upper body strength before starting and they gained it just by going to class. Hope that helps!
@@LyraLauren Thanks a lot for the answer, Lyra, I feel more confident to try now! I wish you a wonderful weekend! 💜
I agree. Just start and you'll get stronger as you go
excelente video gracias
hi, could u tell me how can i know the perfect size to Buy a hoop ?
Hi Amy! Hoop size is mostly a personal preference, so the best way is to try a few sizes at your studio and see which size feels most comfortable. However, any company that sells hoops will also provide a size guide and how to measure yourself for their size guide. Hope that helps!
Amazing video - liked and subscribed :) If you have time to answer, I'd love to hear whether you think it'd be worth it to use this rig at the 7ft height, or if it'd be too cramped at that point (i'm assuming you used around 9ft since your ceilings are 10ft). Either way, thanks for posting this!
Thank you 😊 At 7ft you’d be pretty limited in what you can do, but whether it’s worth it would be up to you! In my other rig video, th-cam.com/video/8C-eJNYNsu0/w-d-xo.html, I show what the limitations are at 8.5ft which might give you a better idea of what it would be like. In the description of that video, there are time stamps for when the rig is low. However, the benefit to having the Ludwig with the 6ft header is that you probably wouldn’t be kicking the legs at low heights. Hope that helps!
@@LyraLauren that explanation is incredibly helpful, thank you very much! Wishing you a great day :)
Y'ALL, YOU CAN FIND THE LUDWIG INSTRUCTION VIDEO ON TH-cam JUST LOOK IT UP!!!
Hey Zoe! Great call out! I added a link to the Vvolfy setup video under the link to the assembly instructions in the description box.
