I agree with you whole heartedly! Especially when you took the time to talk about how early it starts with the pandering from these shows. As a young adult it’s reallyyyy hard to get into shonen. It just feels like a big misogynistic joke filled with young women whose personality is just “cool girl”. A lot won’t get where you’re coming from because they’re young or just don’t want to.

I really agree that colorism is a huge problem within the black community and I feel like people don't really understand the definition of colorism, they take it far too literal, thinking that only the darkest people experience this, when in reality, anyone darker than a white person can experience this. Hell, I've seen TAN WHITE GIRLS experience the side affects of colorism bc their friends or family don't like how "dark" they are (not saying they do but sometimes they get a feel of it yk?). As a lighter black person, I've undoubtedly had my experiences with racism and colorism, and I hate it when people tell me my feelings are invalid because I'm two shades lighter than them

It’s a minor thing in the episode but the princess party bothers me a lot. That they had to reach for obscure princesses like Elena of Avalor and the Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella movie was pretty evident to me that this is a showcase of how culturally limited mainstream princesses still are, although unintentional. Zoey isn’t even Scottish, she’s ashkenazi Jewish. The lack of representation in Disney princesses would’ve been a good episode topic. It could address Disney’s past and modern shortcomings and be a promise to improve. But instead it was a throwaway, unintentional thing in this mess of an episode.

this is my favorite take on this episode so far, especially considering all the criticism i see tends to be... reactionary. i've always felt that this episode leans too far into the white damsel trope, and furthers into the false idea that black women and girls are aggressive and hate white women. it makes dijonay, who should have been the protag of this episode, into the villain. all this episode did was display how much the proud family series' hates dark skin girls and women and will always take the opportunity to make them the villain or the joke to make light skin or white girls look better.

7:27 As a Manga reader, I think Momo’s feelings for Ken stem from him being a kind, dependable person who makes her feel listened to and special. While he wasn’t the strongest at the start of the series, he was always a person Momo could depend on for feeling understood. For instance, in the first chapter where she talks about her childhood, he silently listens. He doesn’t try to chime in or give advice, he offers support by listening. In the same chapter, he says he’ll do anything to protect her, this makes her feel she is worth fighting for. It’s the complete opposite of the relationship with her ex. Also, Momo can be her genuine self around Okarun, embracing her nerdiness about ghosts that she suppressed as a kid. I think seeing Okarun expressing his passion about aliens helped brought that side out of her. Okarun is a genuinely kind, passionate, and reliable person that Momo can be open and vulnerable with, that is why she likes him.

I don't think this show is a masterpiece, but the show isn't outright bad imo. Just very and intentionally weird with its humor. It's pretty horny and a story for the self insert male a little bit with Ken's character and his love interest. I think the problem mostly comes from the writer not really writing their relationship that well into a spark being created in a way that is satisfying to the normal person but I see the intent and the build up to it for the episodes focusing on it. Alot of it can be chalked up to anime being corny and over the top tbh. I would say this anime doesn't help out women as much, but it could atleast give us a meaningfully relevant and main character.as people mentioned below. Obviously the male gaze is in this show, but I respect the effort to giving the female character a important role in fights while being more masculine in alot of ways in leading the action. It's better or provides a unique angle even if the writing for the romance/comedy isn't quite perfect

You could tell the episode was written from a black man's perspective because whoever wrote it didn't seem to understand where the bone of contention was in inherently valuing whiteness over blackness. I was dumbstruck watching how the episode played out because the message seemed to be that the issue with Noah's beliefs and behavior lies with black (and subsequently latina) women holding hostility towards white women and not because it's weird to date people solely based on their race.

Girl, I agree with you thanks for bringing this up. I’m watching and now reading Dandadan and while I like the animation/art style, Momo as an interesting female (quasi-main) character and, I really dislike the nerdy guy self-insert and how Momo is meant to fall for him. And as you said for no reason at all. Strangely enough Chainsawman went a similar direction in the second arc with a female (quasi-main) character but that was handled much better imo. Dandadan is clearly meant to be an energetic fun show, I get it, but yeah, funny at whose expense?

I think Ira used comedic isnt bad , and in later arcs she really shows leadership qualities and carrying a lot, yes momo too. And in defense of the story, its from japan that has, yeah messed up social issues so i think the messaging is pretty well intended that yeah she shouldnt settle with terrible dudes and like actually treat humans like people, if okarun is, ok worship and putting on a pedestal isnt great either, but i think its kinda using the ball jokes to invite people to message if anything, try to have a respectful relationship that can be messy. And Japan is messed up there so, i think that might be context for dandadan why , yeah its goodd actually and edgy enough and silly to get that audience of teenage boys that they want to watch it but also, good messaging? And yes the bar is low and japan seems even lower so that might just be sad realism especially in japan but still good? I just would argue its good signalling with realisting, yeah the bar is low, just try to be decent ok. And someone is probably like you. It can be sad and, good signalling? Oh and ira gets so clearly shown as competent leader better and having a clear head i think the jokes are just meant comedic, not hating. And turbo granny is a real Yokai. Ok a lot of that criticism might be with, Japan, has issues, ranny yokai is a literal yokai made up to scare to drive to fast, and yes old women make kinda good scare figures. like baba yaga. and the message becaus eyeah teenage boys that yeah momo shoulsnt settle with a terrrible dude and as basic as it is, its a lewgit good advice that, the bar is in hell, seriously try being respectful and you probably find someonew liking you, seems true to life. And japan has weird humor ok. The ira hate is probably just jokes intended as she shows later to be really the reliable person on the team. I am not saying its not validd criticism, but in japan regarding sexism, the bar is in hell. So its more realistic sactual positive signalling? And oi heard enough thhat the bar is low in the west already, so, and shaming doesnt work really, making respect and see as people does. (if anyone says your body my choice is, idk, i agree they deserve it thou)

The conversation about how the audiences are meant to project onto Okarun is so interesting when you consider that when this manga was being pitched, the author originally had only Momo as the lead and wanted to write a shonen manga with a female lead but executives advised him to give her a male co lead and only then was Okarun created. I really do wonder what an anime like this would be like if we were meant to follow and project onto the female lead instead, and if it would be better or worse than what we have. I also find your take on Aira interesting, and would be blind if I tried to argue that anime fans didn't have an inclination to hate on confident women, but I also know that Aira is just the start of a big trend in the series of introducing a character as unlikable or annoying only for them show more of themselves later and grow on the readers and slowly become part of the main cast even without fundamentally changing who they are. There are characters later who embody tropes and personalities I almost always hate who I've grown to love over time. This story's approach to the whole "don't judge a book by it's cover" moral is one of my favorite aspects but unfortunately its something that's gonna take at least a few seasons before that theme becomes obvious. The criticisms you give here are valid and, even as a die hard fan of the manga, I agree with a few and can see where you're coming from with the rest, especially in regards to how the series can treat serious sexual topics as jokes. And obviously you don't have to keep watching a show you don't enjoy, our time is valuable and you should spend it on something you value. But the main draw of Dandadan, for me at least, is how the plot moves fast with creative takes on aliens and real folklore (Acrobatic Silky and Turbo Granny are real yokai, btw) and amazing art in both the anime and manga, but the characters and their growth are slow burns that take time to focus on many different kinds of people, the problems they go through, and how they all can come together and understand each other. It's a simple plot but simple isn't always bad as long as it's executed well and for the most part, Dandadan is. I'm glad the majority of people seem to enjoy the show right off the bat, but I really do think this story just gets better as it goes and shows more and more of its heart hidden beneath the wacky action and dick jokes (even if I with there were just a few less of them).

Also one of the biggest things in the show is Ken thinking that he doesn’t deserve friendship with someone as cool as momo further encouraging him to train as a person so he doesn’t have to rely upon granny’s strength and their relationship is created by them having many similarities in experiences such as momo and her childhood being excluded and even current her being somewhat excluded with her being gyaru which is a unpopular look and is even seen as unattractive mostly in Japan and Ken’s exclusion and his want for friendship even going as far as begging the aliens to be friends and the breaking point was them both having a sa experience but saving each other so it is not out of nowhere that momo likes ken because momo sees herself in him and the other way around

  • @zettovii1367
    @zettovii1367 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

Another thing about Dandadan, though-while I get the concern about how the series sexualizes its female characters by putting them in compromising positions and making all the main female leads conventionally attractive (with the exception of the monsters), I don’t believe it counts as misogynistic. Because well, although the girls are attractive, the series also portrays them as multi-dimensional people. They can be prideful and strong, but they also show a full range of emotions-far beyond just being just humble or haughty. The monsters’ indecent actions (and it’s worth noting that the male lead gets targeted too) are clearly shown as creepy and unsettling, emphasizing how threatening these encounters are. It’s meant to be disturbing, which is highlighted by how horror like the scenarios they are put in. And when it comes to something like the Dancer Ghost’s backstory, that’s just straight-up tragic. Now, I get that the shift from childish ball humor to something as dark as a single mother losing her daughter to loan sharks and then committing suicide -might not sit well with everyone. The contrast is jarring, sure. But for a lot of people, that sharp turn makes the tragedy hit even harder. To reduce that kind of storytelling to a narrative of misogyny feels off to me because there’s a genuine human element to it. It’s not about undermining women-it’s about showing the weight of these situations. And while I understand concerns about how media often only humanizes youthful, pretty women while older women are either ignored or turned into monsters, I think that’s a bigger issue across all media. The solution isn’t to pin that on shows like Dandadan, but to push for more stories that include a wider range of women in meaningful roles. Otherwise even here, Turbo Granny, despite being a literal monster, is given depth and personality beyond just being creepy. Seeing how she is a fun, quirky and powerful character on her own right, with potential for character development as a mentor figure of sorts. Both of the main girls also have clear goals, strong moments, and compelling arcs that let them stand on equal ground with the male lead. They’re not there to be inferior to him-they’re integral to the story. So yeah, Dandadan might be lewd and violent, but when you take a step back, it actually treats its female characters pretty well.

Overall while I dont agree with your opinion on Dandadan, I gotta say you do raise a fair point about how the whole sexualization thing really shouldnt be called fanservice, and how concerning it is that "violence, death and r*pe" is normalized to a point where kids feel like they can just do whatever they want even in school out of all places, with it especially getting real bad when it even leads to them causing a greater divide between the genders. I also agree we should to an extent go back to shaming unacceptable behavior, because that's how you enforce that something is wrong, when without that it's easy for youngsters to grow up doing bad things when there is never any backlash to the more crass or abusive behavior they try out. With that said, I still have points where my opinions may possibly differ... In that I dont think that there is anything innately wrong with dark or lewd humor. They have always been a thing in media, because it comes natural to a lot of us humans, and I dont think fiction should be outright censored from ever indulging in them. If anything, kids need more exposure of wholesome media too. Ones that doesnt patronize them for being young, but rather more examples of healthy relationships, more examples of stories that dont revolve around violence. Put focus on making their exposure of stories more full rather than censoring the dark parts of it. Because it's only through understanding that you can mature, when there is no understanding if media is just going to hide the gruesome things and pretend that teenagers have no sex drive out of a legal obligation. What's needed is more exposure of good examples, and guiding them into moderation, not just shame bad behavior I think.

Yeah I agree it is very unbalanced. I feel like tweens and teens don’t have a lot of positive media or role models appropriate for their age that influences them to be decent people overall. Makes me feel super fortunate for the tv shows i grew up watching like Hey Arnold and As Told By Ginger, and I think their influence has definitely made me more aware and sensitive to this issue

@@kythekunoichi Yea, we certainly could use more shows like those, even when I still love my Chainsawmans or Attack on Titan. Though really, as far as action romcom combos that I'd like to see more, is a story where the main couple is just wholesome to each other, with their relationship being more about building each other up even as other kinds of dramas happen around the plot.

As a girl who is recently 18 and finished high school not so long ago. I was too concerned about the behavior on 15 - 17 boy and girls. Literally girls being over submissive on dumb guys opinions, acts and violent actions. Just seeing like empty shells made out of violence and jokery with 0 personality. I was really concerned with the boys of my last 2 years cause in some classes with creative intend they would just talk out their desired for "growing teenagers" and many other derrogative comments toward women in the middle of class or the fact that we had a one year class that was unconsciously separated by the two genders when it came to the chair placing. Only some other girls, me and the teachers knew about this sorta of thing happening. Now as for this show I think it's like good overall and has a fresh air when it comes to the narrative but I'm concerned about how it touches many sensible themes so lightly and more concerning it's the people that emphasizes about this moments when talking good about the show or the grandma's behavior wanting to look a minors pp in a obscene way. It's good but disturbing between the lines on a social level.

first of all, for the portrayal of assault, it was never treated as a joke, it obviously showed momo stressing in out in a non-comedic way, and her being the one to to beat the assaulter only enforced her agency as a character, I read the manga and this is definitely not the worst thing because again, she was the one to stop and defeat the assaulter and was done as a way to establish the motives and presence of the aliens and the plot, speaking of which, stories don't need complex and deep plotlines to be good, there are other appealing aspects like characters and romance which is done very well, on the topic of that, momo and okarun's romance is in no way superficial, we see how she develops her feelings for him ,1. okarun was her type of guy(someone like her idol, 2. he's the one who protected her from the aliens,3. their common interest, they enjoy talking to each other a lot because aliens and ghost aren't that different and they get along very well because of it,4. his compassion and dedication towards her, although I can't speak too much on this because it goes into manga territory,Okarun has shown that he is willing to risk his life for her in the 2nd turbo granny encounter, we see that he always talks to momo and becomes more assertive when theirs a genuine problem, and trains to become stronger to be better at protecting her 5. they're teamwork, you mention how she always done the heavy lifting, but without Okarun's firepower or strength, she would of died, this is mission that requires team work and you just overglanced his contribution, you say he's supposed to fill in the nerdy incel type character(and the use of incel doesn't even make sense here, as he shows respect to his female peers, calling him an incel is just reaching) but a lot of this becomes very hypocritical when you praise aira for being a flawed character developing her self, okarun does the exact same thing in regards to being flawed and developing himself yet you call him a self insert while ignoring all of his development which is subtle in the early episode and you quickly judge him, juxtaposed to you praising aira and saying that people don't comprehend slow character development and judge way to quickly, which appears very contradictory, I can't go on too much detail from here because it's technically a spoiler but again, stories can have simple plots that revolve around anything, as long as the characters are good, something that you mentioned as demon slayer, not only is the plot simple, the characters are 1 dimensional, they never grow out of their initial personalitiy trait and act as caricatures instead of characters, any attempt of development is rushed making it unsatisfactory, and the backstories are useless and redundant once you realise they won't matter because they're told after the demon is killed, at least in dandadan the characters that the backstories are involved still matter as they remain in the cast to develop and aren't done for "oh look he went through a lot, now feel bad" the characters are either mary sues, the butt of jokes, or do things simply for the sake of it (also demon slayer's animation isn't even good, what makes it the best is the compositing, you can't show still frames and call it animation, remove the compositing and it's good, but not excellent, many shows have better animation, including dandadan) comparing it to demon slayer is not only unfair due to a different focus, but demon slayer still does worst to to the underdevelopt story(and yes I read the manga for demon slayer) for the crude jokes, none of them are about assault or death, that's simply reaching, and part of the humor goes beyond that as the character interactions themsleves can be comedic and not about privates we see this with the main trio of okarun, momo and, aira, and lastly, I've talked about how momo's deals with the assaulters in dandadan, and I understand very much if you see that as an issue, but you realise that not only does the same thing happen to okarun, the only difference is that it actually DOES happen, it is very much implied based on how turbo granny threatened him and how she attacks that she probably did just gobble his dong, I'm pretty sure that's SA, but no one seems to say anything about that, though you can say that it is handled well by not really showing or sexualizing it it, the same thing happens in the later episodes where he is not only nearly castrated but also sexualised, withs several buttshots, he was the only one to be completely in the nude and having the least reason too(his clothes wierdly melting out which was wierd, him not using the bag he found is an anime problem because okarun never searched for clothes and found the bag in the manga, so that's not yukinobu's fault) animes and manga's can have all sorts of plots and still be great with good characters and execution, dandadan clearly shows that, anime's like dragon ball or somewhat chainsaw man has showed that you don't need a complex and deep plot for it to be deep or complex(chainsaw man is still one of the best mangas with one of the best depictions of grooming and sexual explotation) and dandadan shows that with it's incredible characters and relationships, what the anime covers is the build up to it's peak so it's a bit early to judge(at this point hype single handedly ruins every anime it's in, because every hit piece against the anime that I see is just nitpicking and reaching and very few criticisms that actually stand, which some can be made) and right now, a lot of the points in this video are nitpicky or projecting(because momo still has flaws and isn't the perfect popular girl as he isn't even that popular and is a gyaru type girl, okarun is not and incel, she doesn't do everything as it's callaborate effort where they would of failed if the other wasn't there, and SA and death was never a topic of humor and was used for shock value and establishing villains, and their being no misogyny, one of the protags is a female and is written very well), and if you still don't like it, than maybe it's just not for you, some shows are for everybody and that doesn't devalue other shows, don't let hype get to you, it litereally happens in every popular shounen, whether it's good or bad

Don't think the fandom hate Aira so much because of her confidence directly... But because she straight up looked down on Okarun-, a character the fans grew attached to, -labeling him as a loser whilst taking advantage of his depression just to make herself look good rather than out of any genuine goodwill (when that alone makes one quite hateable for a lot of people), before then in general just seemingly threaten the ship Okarun has with Momo... When the shippers in general can get quite touchy about any possible "torpedoes" that could sink their favorite pairing, even when said pairing is kinda obviously end game. .....Or well, I thought that was all there was to her hate, but then I started to think more about her other flaws, whilst trying to come up with the reasons for why I even like Aira. Because really, despite it being a popular opinion to hate her, I honestly found her quirky and funny, with her also having a potential to become a good person if her bond with the silky ghost was any indication. But then there is just the thing, she came out not merely as a proud "girl boss" or whatever in her introduction, she came out as an exploitative narcissist. While even by the point that she ends up liking Okarun, instead of merely being nice for "virtue points" to the nerd she talks badly about behind his back, -well, she becomes pushy and handsy over him. Trying to force their relationship to get intimate with kisses and whatnot, when they are barely friends. Not to mention she was the one that spread nasty rumors about Momo being a s who just take anybody that'd ask. If you stop to think about it, it's really not a wonder why Aira is widely hated, her first impressions were absolutely terrible.... Even when she most likely will grow up to be a more sympathetic character in the long run.

Think the relationship between Ken and Momo looks onesided, because you are only focusing on the good things Momo does in it, while brushing everything Ken does aside as a "bare minimum". Like sure, Momo really is out there for her boy when you stop to think about it, and the relationship would probably never have happened if she didint approach him first... But then there is the thing, it only became a relationship because Ken sought her out back, they likely would have just stuck as strangers if he didnt reach her out right after. He also took initiative in hanging out with her in multiple instances even after that, Momo wouldn't have lived long enough to awaken her powers if he didnt save her with his curse (which is very useful on their battles too), and that's all on top of the fact that he also defended her when nasty rumors were spread about her (inspite of the fact that he had all the reason to think they werent friends anymore, considering how she rejected his company earlier). And more than anything, there is the part of their dynamic where they seemingly can just talk about anything and bounce off each other socially, without it feeling forced. When that's the most important part in any relationship, which this video doesnt seem to acknowledge. It's far less onesided than what you make it seem. Like seriously, their "lovey dovey" dynamic doesnt come from the battles, or how they do some grandstanding in defending the other's honor (although that's admittedly neat too), the chemistry comes from how they just revel in each others company, with Ken stepping up a lot expressing himself freely in talking with her, and Momo reciprocating... Whenever both of their insecurities dont go in the way, which is a point of drama. Like seriously, Momo did openly reject Okarun's company in front of her classmates, out of mere embarrassment once. That's not cool, even when she did stand up for him later. While Okarun himself isn't perfect, since he isnt always transparent himself about what he is doing, ghosting Momo a couple times and causing misunderstandings due to miscommunication, even when he tries to be more honest with her later, his behavior is unnecessarily messy too at times. But moving through struggles is part of any buddying relationship, so even that adds to the story. Also, more than the whole "will they or wont they?" schtick (which honestly is an annoying trope imo), this story seems to focus more on "are they ready yet?" factor, cause their dynamic is all about building up their bond, not putting it in jeopardy for alternate end games... Cause despite the fact that Aira does serve as somewhat of a romantic rival since she likes Okarun and he finds her attractive, the dude still seems laser focused for Momo's affection, while Momo becomes more motivated (for better and for worse) with Aira there. So more than just being obvious that the main couple is meant to be, it seems that it's the point, with Aira just being there to stoke the fires, forcing the main couple to develop further.... Before possibly getting a relationship of her own, as there is still yet another guy to enter the cast, if the anime opening is any indication.

I dont think the show is as toxic as you claim it to be.. but. While i agree it isnt a masterpiece overall, you are missing a different point of view. This story & anime maybe just isnt for you. Demon Slayer was for you...and not for others Just because a majority liked something and you too doesnt mean you have the same perspective or experience and so ... different stories will show those life experience differences. So..interesting video either way. Watch something you prefer.
