Lighting for Frost* - Island Live (Heartstrings and Repeat to Fade)
READ DESCRIPTION FIRST
Hi everyone, it has been a while.
I stopped doing the lockdown videos as I have now fully gone back into the industry and I'm busier than ever. I don't really have time to do these now, and as I am so busy with touring, I would effectively be doing my day-job in my downtime, so it would stop being fun very quickly.
Anyway, onto the video.
Back in 2022 I did the lighting design and operated for the Frost* - Day and Age tour, which was filmed at Komedia in Bristol and released as 'Island Live.'
I thought some people might be interested to see how the original programming in Capture compared to the actual show after it had been performed a few times. Every show evolves as it is going along (and yes there were a couple of mistakes both on the show, and on this replay. Nobody's perfect.)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy, and I might do more of these from time to time with other bands that I am working with (with their permission).
Equipment used on the tour:
- 16x Robe Spikie
- 24x Martin VDO Skeptron
- 6x Eurolite CBB4
- 8x Eurolite CBB2
Venue:
6x Ayrton Mistral
4x Chauvet QWash 419
6x Cameo Thunder TWs Strobe
Sunstrips and S4 Profiles
Controlled using Obsidian NX2 and NXP playback wing.
Footage used with permission from Jem Godfrey.
Frost* are:
Jem Godfrey -Keys/Vocals
John Mitchell - Guitar/Vocals
Nathan King - Bass/Vocals
Craig Blundell - Drums

MA2 Virtual Rig Build - July 2021
This is a timelapse of a new lighting rig idea I had while listening to a new album. I wanted to try a couple of new things with this one, including using framing shutter and truss automation. I have not used moving paths before, so will see how this comes out. It is a little ‘warts and all’ this time as even though I had a basic drawing, I was a little unsure about the dimensions and how the r...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows - In The Cage Medley (1984) by Genesis
It has been a while since the last upload. I am now no longer on night shifts and awaiting a change of work opportunities as I have now moved. Anyway, I had this as a request on one of my other Genesis lightshow videos. It took a while to get started on it, but I have been learning new programming techniques despite lighting these songs many times with various tribute bands in the UK. I wanted ...
MA Virtual Lightshows - Sirens by Arena
Two Arena videos in a row. Just had this as an earworm as I have been working on some video content for projections for other songs on the 'hopeful' next tour. Right, where to start... This one was a bit of an epic and took a while both because of having the energy from nightshift work and the negative mental health effects that has, and that this ended up being 108 cues not including loops and...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows - Arena Contagion Medley
It's been a few weeks since my last upload. Not been feeling very productive recently due to mental health issues with work, lockdown, and other factors limiting touring. Arena is a band I've worked with since 2011. After working on some projection content for the (hopefully) upcoming tour I have been listening to the Contagion album a lot. It is the first time I had listened to the whole album...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows - 'Fly From Here Pt 3: Madman at the Screen' by Yes
I had gotten back into this album recently, and thought I would continue part of the Fly From Here series of songs by Yes, but using the new rig. Shout out to my friend Andy Clark who does lights and video on tour for them. This one was quite ticky with using a mix of cuestack and flash buttons, and mixing in some delayed fade times during the intro. The songs are flight themed, so I did try to...
MA Virtual Lightshows - Fly From Here Pts 1 and 2 (Re-done)
I've been getting back into this album again, and had a look back at the original upload I did for this. I thought that it looked a little dark, and it was still just a single camera angle. I made a few improvements to the original rig by getting the fixture dimensions right, and the correct amount of lumens (although some needed a little balancing out). I have also re-recorded with multiple an...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows - Shallow Bay by IQ
Something subtle for a change, thought I would try something a little more gobo orientated. I tried something a little new for me with programming and linking chases from other cuelists using the 'Command' section in the cuelist. It was a learning curve with how I wanted the end cues to look and getting attributes to release correctly. My own spin on this song, but still as always, shout out to...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows - The End Complete Pt 3 by Coheed and Cambria
Finally gotten around to doing a lightshow to these guys. This is the band that originally gave me the initial ideas for this rig, including the separate video screens surrounded by what would have originally been parcans/ACLs, but ended up going with VL5 LEDs. A friend of mine from 6th form college got me into this band, and I've seen them live a couple of times too in London (2010) and Birmin...
MA Virtual Lightshows - Sehnsucht by Rammstein
Just another track I had as an earworm during this week, so I thought I would give it a go. Taken from their live show Live Aus Berlin in 1998. If there is anything you would like to see or for me to try lighting, feel free to leave a comment. Rig details: GrandMA2 on PC v3.9.0.1 48x Varilite VL10 Beamwash 23x Varilite VLZ Spot 6x Robe BMFL Followspot 104x Varilite VL5 LED (Using VLX in MA3D) 1...
MA2 Virtual Lightshows: Bedshaped by Keane (Updated and reupload)
The original video got blocked for some reason even though I'm not monetising these. Bedshaped was my first video on this channel, so I decided to re-record it and re-edit with multiple angles as I have a better graphics card now. I do not own any part of this music, this belongs to the original creators. Original Description While having to stay home and having no events to work on, I thought ...
MA Virtual Lightshows - Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos (Live) by Genesis
It's been a while since I last uploaded. Temp work has been taking its toll with both peak coming up and a second lockdown in the UK. Just haven't had the mantal space to make something until recently. This is a live verison of Dance on a Volcano and Los Endos recorded in Frankfurt in 1981. I found this bootleg desk recording on TH-cam a while back, and I think this is probably my favourite ver...
MA3D Virtual Lightshows - Celestial Sky by Carptree
This is a band I discovered just from listening to prog radio stations online (in this case Morow.com), and this is the first track that got me interested. I liked their huge sound, and how dramatic this song feels. It took me a couple of tried to get this programmed, and some parts I resorted to using flash buttons otherwise it would have tripled the number of cues (this one was about 54 cues)...
MA3D Virtual Lightshows - Red Eyes by Arena
This song has never been toured so far, but I wanted to have a go at it with my new rig to see how it would come out on a large scale. This would probably be a good track to introduce lasers, but that is not something I am qualified to do in the wild Arena is a band I've worked with since 2011. The Theory of Molecular Inheritance Tour did end up being rescheduled for October 2021, so the tour a...
MA3D Virtual Lightshows - Endless Ways by Anathema

I wasn't expecting to do this track, but I came home and put it on, and suddenly just started getting ideas. Within a couple of hours, I had programmed this. I had heard of the band before but only the name. I first heard and saw some footage of their work as an advert for an upcoming for at De Boerderij in Zoetermeer, Holland (one of my favourite venues that I tour to a lot, and hope to quickl...

I LOVE ITT !!! THIS IS COOOOL !!!
Just wonderful! Amazing! Top Notch!
Where’s the drummer @?
Thanks for new video! ✌️
That hexagonal rig back then. We’ll never see anything like it again.❤
please do the whole of "seconds out tour album"🤞🤞❤️❤️👍👍
On behalf of Arena I thank you for your excellent work. I will email Mick and Clive with the link to this video. I really hope the the negative mental issues with night work do not last too long. Best wishes, Paul
Hi, I've been back working in the industry since August 2021, and it has kept me really busy (which is a very good thing). It is also why I have not had time to upload anything for quite a while. I have been working with Arena doing their lighting and video projections since 2010 as well as with other prog bands.
That is good to hear, I don't stay in touch much and wanted Mick and Clive to know the great work you have done. Seems you have beaten me to it. :) God bless, Paul @@anthrolightproductions
Is this a simulation used to design light shows? Any interest from the band?
Such a good song! Perfect intro of the album!
brill!!!,i hope when genesis do an avatar show like ABBA and i hope they will🤞,they will take this light show into consideration, amazing vocals and sound.genesis forever
It would be awesome if you could replicate to the detail the Invisible Touch Tour, using the same amount of lights and disposition.
When will be new virtual show?
wonderful art
I wish I had seen this before. If we ever get to do something on this kind of scale, would definitely want you involved. The 13 minute mark brought tears to my eyes.
Great job. What do you think of the Last Domino light-show? Found it awfully busy, out of synch, like a man who has too much tools in his hands and not able to suit the music. Found the big screens perturbing and not well used. Too much effects kill the effect. They never had done better than between 81 and 87 in y opinion.
Awesome 👍
Add about 200 more Varilights
...parece un OVNI..ok
Howard Ungerleider is the true Wizard of lightning!
Incredible song and band! Absolutely love this song!
Absolutely. I certainly hope to work with Jimmy Keegan Ted Leonard and Dave Meros again after lighting Spoxk's Beard's performance of Snow at Loreley
This is awesome. It's the light show mechanics for the 1992 I can't dance tour, but his voice sounded strange because it sounded too good to be 1992. Then I read the description. Lol. I Believe his voice was best from Duke to the mama tour. After that it kind of started to fade a little bit, as is evident in late 1986 when he was no longer able to do apocalypse in 9/8 - they had to switch to afterglow. Nobody lives forever I guess. 🥴
Excellent! Nothing is more exciting to see than the lighting working in precise time with the music. I love to see the individual musicians lit to bring them to the fore during their solos and stand-out sections. I would love to see this actually applied to a live track. It makes all the difference to watching the band when the visuals are in perfect sync.
Wow!! Outstanding!!
Würde gerne mal sehen was du aus Pink Floyds Sorrow so machen würdest.
How do you get your fixtures to line up so quickly with your truss ? Mine line up when looking from the front, from the side they are miles away
With The addition of screens this Will be a Dream come true
Felt like i was there... and i was, I've seen this tour.
You have my dream job!
Wow - great work!
Excellent work. I am the lighting engineer for a UK Genesis tribute called 'Genesis Visible Touch' (GVT). This is certainly the way we would like to go in production however we have many steps to climb. Thanks for this, much appreciated and Best Regards.. Mac
Nice presentation!
Sorry for sounding cheesy and commercial but this really needs to be converted into an app so that people can experience live music anytime and anyplace they want to. Get the support of the bands (I’m sure they have all the specs for their stage set-ups… the Roger and Martin Dean/the Claire Brothers and Mike Tait must sure have them…)
Thanx for new video 😉
Welcome 😊
I really enjoyed this! Huge fan of Vari*Lite. Reading your notes, you seem to know a lot about people and lights... I'm curious who did the lighting for Tomoyasu Hotei, for his 2014 Into The Light tour.. I thought it was pretty spectacular for a small stage.
This is a trailer... they took the concert down but I have it on Blu-Ray. Lighting gets more interesting on into the clip. The lights I assume may be a Vari*Lite competitor. th-cam.com/video/BBNUhS9FB7E/w-d-xo.html
Hi, Thanks for the kind comments. Before the pandemic I'm a freelance lighting engineer, so this is the kind of stuff I would be doing in the real world (although unfortunately not to this scale, I have not climbed the ladder enough yet). Currently I'm still stuck working for temp agencies. As for the trailer, I'm afraid I do not know who the designer was for that show. It does look good and very technical, although I think the band was a hidden. There are a lot more competitors to Varilite these days. Back in the 1980s they pretty much owned the moving light market, but more companies started emerging later on. From the looks of it, I recon on that show they used Clay Paky Sharpies and B-Eye K10s. Hope this helps :)
Once again - where were you 2 and a half years ago when I needed someone to demonstrate how awesome it would be to watch a concert (circa 197x-198x) via a headset?
This is epic and I love it.
As I said to the OTHER guy that does this stuff - where were you 2 and a half years ago?
Now that was something special a big thumbs up 👍
I am in a Genesis tribute band in Denver, this looks great! I would love to have a light show like this. Great job.
Bravo. Belle orchestration. Jeux de lumière réussis. 😃😃
Fab
These are so fkn awesome.... nice job
Hey @Anthrolight Productions, The lighting designs are really excellent and generate a lot of interest for a "Vari*Lite fanatic" like me. I also think it's great that, for example, different shades of green appear as with all color options. And a lot more (e.g. cone shapes) Just some questionss: There are relatively few options for integrating a video wall in the designs, because either light in all possible ways or a media screen and occasionally "waving" Vari*Lites All in all, many thanks, keep it up and take other forms (e.g. Genesis Tour 1987 vs Pink Floyd etc.) of the arrangement of spotlights or spotlights under the stage (Genesis 92. but unfortunately the effects didn't work). It's also sad at the arenas, where it only gets so dark later in the evening that the light show is even visible. But: The designs only works because each member is symmetrically arranged. How would the lightshow look if it came to the "classic Genesis arrangement", i.e. 2 guitars / basses next to each other but in front of a drum kit, singer in the middle, kyboarder on the side not directly in front of the possible second drum kit. Who knows, maybe you will develop the Vari * Lites further ?! All the best :-) Sorry, English is not my regular language
Fergs Records could add some good synths to you. Love it.
My kinda music
Yet another great video...fantastic...is there any chance you could do some older concerts by this great band...perhaps from 1978...with the mirrors/lasers...or 1981...when vari lights were 1st used 👍
Brilliant work. Loved this. Saw the mama tour in 84. Thank you!!!
Awesome song and choice for your work.
This is probably my favorite one. I think you get it that there should always be something going on with the lights, not just changing color now and then. Boring! Long, slow sweeps & random aim is the best. Reference "home by the sea" live 1986.
