If you were going to race on the beach like the TROG race, would you want to keep the heavy flywheel because of the inertia you spoke about or would you just go lighter for the speed?
Traditional way: get an aircraft pump 😮💨 and hide it in the frame

Great idea. Spoiler alert...we think our future hemi build needs 6 carbs and an old hidden aircraft pump!

I have a question on the 4 banger. I have a 1930 sport coupe with a rumble seat where the trunk would be and I was thinking of first changing the 6V battery to a 12V battery and I'd like to find a different place to put the battery than under the floor, but is it ok to convert a 4 banger to a 12 V battery? are there any issues with that? Any Ideas as where to put the battery i am open to. Thanks
This black coupe is converted to 12 volts and has the battery mounted in the trunk hidden in an old Dr. Bag. No issues so far
Hey: Yea, would love to see details on how that Xmemember gets trimmed on the ends and all the other fab details related to the brakes, steering, A-V8 conversion. MC installation and brake lines could be an entire video since those operations happen even with "banger" cars and are critical to safe, effective, systems. Currently working on a 29 CCPU but using a TCI boxed Hot Rod frame with a 283, Turbo 350, and 8" Ford rear end. Long time project that is "mocked-up/fabbed" and sheetmetal is being disassembled to send out for paint. Basic build but with LOTS of detail. Check out my channel and look for the "Old Hank" playlist. Channel name is the same as my screen name here. Thanks for putting this stuff up for us. ;o)
Sounds like a fun truck! I'll check it out
Great to see you back .
Thanks!
great to see you are back at work.. u picked up a lot of floor space lifting the body onto the frame.. room for another project? haha. Im thinking my favorite project is the 34 pick up.. I had one back in the 50s while in high school ... trying to make a B gas drag truck. Then life got into the way.. ...
They're lined up outside, waiting to get in!
About time you got back on..................enough with this illness and injury stuff kid. Hope '25 works better for you. Yes on more detail and completion steps on this, if Tardel can make a small fortune with his book you should be able to draw good audience with a visual representation.
I appreciate the encouragement! It's good to be back at it.
Good to see you back, love you videos
Glad you like them!
Hallelujah...... Thought you had left us..... Welcome back.... 👍👍😎😎💪💪
Glad to be back!
I watched "American hotrod" for its whole run. I get the shirt joke.
A-V8 was such a standard thing. However, back in the day, all of the components were available in junkyards. Also, many of the details you will be encountering, like the steering box and mounting are things you will illustrate to the builders who aren't sure where to go besides a catalog... Nice to see a traditional build.
I think having the body sit on top of the frame is called a "High Boy." If you put the body down, over the frame about 6 inches? it is called being "channeled." The lower body usually looks better.
You're right, this is a "High Boy" setup. I wanted to do that to keep the stock frame/suspension and give it that classic look! When I mentioned the body height in my video. I was specifically referring to where the body sits without the wood body mount blocks. Sorry if there was some confusion there. If you prefer channeled hot rods. We do have a channeled 31 roadster being built on the channel. "Susie the little blue roadster". Thanks for watching!
Welcome back! What are the wheel and tire sizes? Like the stance!

Matttttt... we love snooping each others shops even if they're not specifically car, do a vid of his. Glad yer back and I wish I didn't know about blowing a tendon, daaaaamn. Now about that hemi?
@danontherun5685 hemi is holding the concrete down in the back of the shop! Unfortunately that is LONG term
@@Seattle_Speed_Shop When you get to putting the hemi into an old Ford consider stretching the frame rather than fighting the firewall and cross member, also solves steering box clearance. The longer front end made mine a much better looking car, we all prefer a longer bit sticking out the front.
Liked what you said about old cars being like time machines. That's how I feel sometimes driving my Mustang around the back roads, listening to oldies on KBRC.... sends me back in time... until a Smart car comes around a bend and jerks me back to the present....kinda like Christopher Reeves in "Somewhere in Time"...

Hey good to see you back. The AV8 is a fun project, looking good. Yeah, I got the Hawaiian shirt gag...LOL
There you are......👍
Love your Banger series, truly excellent! My question is - is it worth doing all that to a 4 banger or just put the money into a flathead V8. I'm talking from considering OHV's because in the end the V8 with mods will be faster if you are racing and worth more, which equals more desirability, which equals sell ability which transform into another new project after you sell it. Would you do it for yourself?
@WaxedSurf that's a really good question that I get asked some what frequently. And I'll try and answer it as best I can. I think it comes down to a lot of factors. But I think ultimately, FOR MOST PEOPLE, a flathead v8 is a better choice, in the same way that a SBC is a more reliable choice over a flathead v8. If that makes sense? There are enough advancements in design technology to warrant a more modern direction depending on your mechanical capabilities and what you desire to do with it is. I tell a lot of people that bangers are a "tinkers engine". Meaning that they're for guys that like to tinker and improve and maintain things. They're old engines made using old technology and designs. They're kinda "the last of an era". While the v8 is more modern and in a few ways more reliable.(depending on year). That being said. In my opinion, Bangers are more responsive to modifications than a v8 is. You're gonna feel more seat of the pants difference with each modification to a banger. Which in some ways is more rewarding and fun. I think as far as ultimate performance per dollar spent you're better off with a flathead v8 over a banger. A v8 is your best money spent. You'll have a less failure prone engine, and something that will be a little more usable. You can make big power with a banger. They'll run with a v8. But then you have a bunch of mods needed to keep that banger alive. Their oiling system is a huge downfall. Ultimately the reality is they're both expensive to build. You should build what is fun for you. A V8, in theory, will be a better engine for most people. The one thing I do have to say is, my truck will run with most v8s, I don't see a lot of really high HP v8s being run on the streets, so my truck definitely holds its own. But its essentially a ticking time bomb. It will expire at some point if continuely run hard. The other thing to think about is cost of entry of v8 cars vs model As. V8 fords(32-40) are valuable cars. Model As are dirt cheap for an entry level old car and with a few modifications, you can have a banger "Hot rod" without the investment of say a 32 ford. If we're talking v8 in an A, that's obviously a good affordable way to a v8 ford. But it's definitely a lot of modifications to install in comparison to playing with a banger in a "stock" chassis. If you can't fab or have limited mechanical abilities. The model A is a good choice, but ultimately I think it has a lot to do with your budget vs. What you ultimately want. I was a lot younger when I built my truck. It fit my budget at the time...which is kinda a whole other story of how I got into bangers. Anyways. Hope that answers your questions. Right now, I'm building the ohv roadster and just started a v8 roadster. So my final opinion is you need BOTH. 😆
@@Seattle_Speed_Shop I get what you are saying. I just got into these cars about 10 years ago when I stumbled on to the inaugural TROG Race in Asbury Park NJ. I've been hooked ever since and I am now buying my first car a 1930 model A roadster (Sort of - I think it was a coupe with the canvas top and back that they took off because the title says sport coupe) but I am excited, and I am using you as my guide for the build. I found you channel about 1 1/2 years ago and have been hooked ever since. So, thank you in advance because you are a HUGE help to me, and I am sure many others. When are you going to start selling Seattle Speed shop T's? And do you have any intentions of coming out East to a TROG race - great to meet you!
How did you account for the lack of connecting points for anti chatter rods a 59ab and earlier would have?
@danielbuckner2167 haven't done that yet. Probably will drive it and see how it is. If it needs them i think attaching them to the bellhousing would be my choice. Obviously something custom there.
Just found your channel. I've always loved 50s cars. Recently fell in love with these old hotrods. Im a sponge learning all i can. Ill soon be looking for something to start building. That is once I pay off the 57 Mercury I bought last spring. Love the content. Looking forward to catching up on all your adventures.

Have you done any videos on the 12 volt conversion?
@@davidcummings2544 no, but I could! This car was already 12 volts when it came.
How do you know visually when looking at the two engines the "A" or "B" which is which?
@davidcummings2544 Fuel pump boss on passenger side of the B block is the best way in my opinion. I'm cooking up a A vs. B Identification video. Keep an eye out!
What is the advantage of the 39 tranny? What did you have to do to install it?
Synchronized 2nd and 3rd gear. Better ratios. It's a bolt in kit. No major mods needed.
Love the fact she's on the original frame rails ..light fast and ..."sexxy".
You did a very nice job on this one. Ride height is perfect. You got yourself a new subscriber. 👍 I need to know more about that engine. 😊
Improved cragar OHV made by Bell Auto in 1936.
Nice to see an old rig in the snow. Thoughts on daily driving one during the winter? We get a lot of salt where I live. Would a good undercoating and regular washing be enough?
I imagine oiling seasonally would work well. Alternatively, a great use of a fiberglass body!

Question for you Matt, you may have already covered it in another video that I missed but does your pickup have mechanical brakes or did you convert to juice? I've got a lead on a '29 pickup project and I'd really like to do it up similar to yours with a hopped up banger. I still dream of an AV8 roadster but man bangers are cool! Thanks!
