Travel with Josh & Jess
Ecuador
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ส.ค. 2023
We'll take you along on our travels while looking for a new home outside the U.S. as well as random fun trips!
Living in Olon, Ecuador. Our first 8 months.
8 months! We discuss how our life has changed since moving to Olon, Ecuador.
Our names are Josh and Jessica, and we’ve had enough of the rat race and chasing the almighty dollar. So, what did we do? We moved to Ecuador!
We've purchased a 1980 Volkswagen Bus as well as a 200cc Daytona motorcycle to blast around on.
We are LOVING LIFE!
Relocating to Ecuador has become popular among retirees and people of all ages.
Ecuador isn’t just the Galápagos Islands.
It’s the most biodiverse country in the world and sits right on the equator (Ecuador means "Equator").
It has four major regions: the Galápagos Islands, the Coastal region, the Andes region, and the Amazon region.
Ecuador is a solid choice for those seeking beautiful scenery, diverse nature (flora and fauna), great architecture, small villages to large cities, a healthier lifestyle, and a lower cost of living.
Please follow along on our journey through Ecuador and South America as we begin our new life!

Surviving Ecuador's Power Crisis
มุมมอง 34021 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Our beloved Ecuador has been experiencing a horrible drought that has caused scheduled, nationwide blackouts throughout the entire country. (up to 10-15hrs a day on some days). We just had to make a silly video about how we go about our days without electricity. We hope you enjoy it! P.S. If you take this seriously and get offended, go sit on mommy's lap and she'll tell you everything will be a...

We plan to give updates on renovating Casa Luz as we make progress and to give an idea of what it's like to do-it-yourself here. Our plans for the house are to be rid of the termites, fix it up,...

The "Transito" or "Transportation Police" in Ecuador has a very well-earned horrible reputation for being extortionists. Our original "facilitator" who became such an awesome resource gave us a tip about having a 10'er or even a 20 in the car's matricula paperwork when you hand it over. The ones looking for that shakedown take it and move you on and the ones that are not looking for the shakedown just hand it all back to you. He was hilarious he also said to play super dumb and unable to speak to say something crazy like No fumo español... hahahaha Yeah the whole ATM sign on the typical gringo back was something very hard to get used to.
Great video. I like it I get it. Thanks guys!
Glad to hear it and thanks for watching!
Just watched before our electricity goes out lol. It was so nice to see you both so happy. The video captures it so well. You are in the zone. See you soon.
Thank you! We'll see you soon!
Hi guys, glad you're enjoying being there. You are really" living the life you love". To steal a line from your friends.
We truly are, thank you!
So genuine! Much love ❤
Thank you my friend!
I hope you guys haven't been affected by the hurricane.
Excellent !!!!!
Glad you like it!
Congrats, this sounds like a love story; it helps being in love with each other, no matter where you are, love and appreciation will pull you through.
Yes! Thank you!
You guys are too cute!!
Aww.. Thanks ❤️
Sex every time the power goes out? I’m putting the breaker box next to my side of the bed in the new house. LOL

Lol! Thank you! And yes... yes we are making the best of it ;)

Looks so awesome guys!! Can't wait to see the finished product. Love the boho vibe!❤
Aww... Thanks! We're making progress!
Definitely keep all the stickers on the TV! 😂
Lol! We'll peel them off and keep them in a safe place to increase the tv's resale value 😀
Stickers MUST stay on. Very bad luck if you take them off. And yes grow peppers. Lots of peppers. 🎉🎉🎉. Looking great guys.
Lol! Peppers... lots of peppers lol!
@@KrisandMikeLots of peppers! 🌶🫑🌶 🫑🌶
Looks great, it's going to be a fantastic place when done. I think it's cute you think she will give you a place for clothes, probably going to store yours in your garage. Are you going to replace the computer desk window with a wider view? We are moving next year to Ecuador, doing a bunch of research ourselves. Look forward to seeing more updates.
You are correct.... Once the roof is on the garage, she might let me enter the house on Christmas day to eat dinner, other than that... Me and my clothes will probably live in the garage :) If you come down this way, look us up!
Salinas is chill, we like to visit from Cuenca a few times a year
Yeah it wasn't too bad!
Looks good, watching it all come together will be very rewarding. Ecuador is an amazing country and thankfully we got some rain this weekend.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, Quenca is getting hit hard right now!
Great job Jessica!! Looks great!!! We just came home from Ecuador and saw you guys a couple of weeks ago having lunch and didn't want to bother you guys. I am not ashamed to say I was star struck😂
Ha! We wish you would have stopped to say hello! We love meeting the wonderful people who watch our videos! Thank you for the kind words!
I wish you would have stopped and said hi! I hope you loved it here. Please let us know if you come back and we'll grab lunch.
@@jessicahenry3929 sounds like a plan!! Fingers crossed moving there next year!!
WOW this looks great . I cant wait to get down there in July
Thank you for the kind words and we look forward to seeing you!
I cant wait to get there. FINALLY booked my one way ticket for next July. I really love Olon area and will initially set up camp there. Going to see if I can lease a place at Samai for a long stay until I can get a mor permanent place.
Excellent idea! Samai is so beautiful!
What’s your point????? A lot of noise. Missing content.
Geesh, that's a lot of question marks lol! The 1st 15 minutes alone (out of 40 minutes), discusses the chill vibe of the area, how nice the people are, the delicious fresh food, the amazing restaurants, the unfortunate trash/littering situation, the difference between low season high season.... Pretty sure that would be considered as content. Thanks for watching!
Cute VW
Thank you!
You guys are amazing 😊
Lol! Thanks Koril!
They take 'security' quite serious there ..... Are all those ships at anchor waiting to unload/load, or empty and not in use at this time ?
Great to hear from you! Yes, security is a big deal here. There is security everywhere you go. Some are government employees like with the police department. Most are private security companies. As far as the ships, I'm not sure what their status is.
I love it. i haD a 74 CB 750 cafe for years. ran like a champ. I hope she rides great and is reliable.
Oh she's a hoot for what she is lol! Those CB's were great bikes. I had a CB500 that I turned into a rigid chopper. I also had a couple of Suzuki GS 1100's. One a street/strip bike and the other a 9 second drag bike.
It will be fun to watch as you progress on the property. Good luck you two.
Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Hmph. Yup, sick happens. How far of a drive to town for meds and such?
About a 10 minute walk :)
Maybe pick up an old school sickle for the tall stuff? Also, I'd leave some vegetation up where the road is to hide the house and cut down on road noise/dust/diesel soot and such. Crazy imcline to the house BTW ! Doesnt that area have a rainy season/storm season? What about theft in the area? Is home security an issue? Did you consider an upscale'ish like 37 foot trailer for the property that would be better insulated / air conditioned / pest resistant. Is there rodent issues there? Great video. Gorgeous view. Would love to see what a day is like there in reality. I may have gone a little more tub buggy instead of the cycle. Can you drive on the beach?
Thanks for the questions. We do have a rainy season, but not like pounding rain in the jungle. In our area, theft is very minimal because our community practices "local justice", if you know what I mean. Home invasions aren't a thing in our area at all. In the hills surrounding Vilcabamba there have been a few. Travel trailers don't exist here and driving on the beach is illegal :)
I would think the gasoline/ diesel treatment may have future thermal event issues, no? Still, it looks like fun. Bus is sweet :) Are the summers pretty humid/hot?
The gas/diesel treatment has been a practice for many many years now and from what info we have gathered, no issues. The house does need to be aired out for a large amount of time though lol! Thanks for the compliment on the bus! She was recently in a video shoot for a music video :) Dec and Jan are our hottest 2 months as the humidity and sunlight are brutal. The typical don't leave the house between 11 and 3.
I enjoy watching the videos but I wish you would mention the city you moved to. I'm thinking of moving but haven't decided between ocean vs mountain areas.
Thanks for watching! On our channel, the most current videos (approximately 30 videos) and playlists labeled, "Our House" "Our life in Ecuador", "We made the move" and "we're moving to Ecuador" all mention where we live in Ecuador. Initially, we moved to Olon, and now own a home in the San Jose communa 5 minutes north of Olon :)
CONGRATULATIONS!! on the acquisition. I hope it serves you well for many years to come!
Thank you and thanks for watching. :)
Big project. Over the years I owned 3 homes. Left them all better than I found them. If I got paid for the hours I put into them I'd be rich. I'm not. hahaha Did make enough to retire in Ecuador. Fill very well compensated. May start videoing my adventures. Shopping for a computer. May I ask your opinion ? Gracias
Sure, what would you like to know?
@@TravelwithJoshandJess Thanks for responding. I have been riding for almost 50 years now. I struggle with technology. Is 16 GB of ram enough to produce a couple of 10 minutes of motorcycle video a month. With simple editing. Or should I reach deeper into my shallow pockets. haha. I have over spent on hobbies in the past. Only to lose interest.Retired in Cuenca now. Living in an apartment. Miss having a shop to work on projects. Once spent $300 bucks on tools to build a bird house. jajaja !
Yes 16gb should be enough. 1 get 2 1/2hrs on my Insta360 with a 128gb SD card.
@@TravelwithJoshandJess Gracias

Weed whacking. How satisfying ❤
Very much so!
Thank you for the tour! Beautiful place! My husband and I can’t wait to get to Educador! We enjoy your videos! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching :) Ecuador is such a beautiful country :)
Congratulations. So happy for you.
Thank you so much!
We had a so called 'luxury house' custom built in a so called 'upscale gated community'' on the coast of Manabi. Shortly after moving in the roof leaked, windows flooded, air conditioners leaked, water poured in under sliding doors, etc And many more construction issues. It really is wise to rent and get to know which local builders to trust.
Ugh... sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, stories like that are far to common :( you are correct though. It's a good idea to really get the feel for who the legitimate quality builders are before building.
I'll visit to steal your sink, and your sunset.
Lol! Just leave me a new surfboard when you leave :)
Curious on the price of the sink? Was looking at one here in Canada at Costco. Kris and Mike follower here and a new sub to your channel. BTW I love that view, sunsets are amazing!
The sink was around $150. Yes we completely agree about the view :)
How much did the bike cost out the door?
$1700
Is it fuel injection, 5 speed?@@TravelwithJoshandJess
@@KenBalduff 5 speed yes, Fuel injected no. This particular bike is more of a workhorse/farm bike, so it is very low geared, simple to maintain, and has a Kickstart lever in addition to an electric starter as well as fold-down cargo floorboards. I love this bike because it's a tractor at low speeds and still maintains 80km/hr on the roads. However, you do get what you pay for. If you really beat on the bike hard, things will break. Like the foot pegs, handlebars, etc.
@@TravelwithJoshandJess ok, perfect...I get it. There are probably some Chinese bikes with FI, in different price range. Some of those Chinese bikes have gotten a load miles on them in the oriental and S American markets.
I like the 5 speed and low end torque
Love the sink! Did you buy that in La Libertad as well?
We did! At the mall as well.
How is the import fee for online shopping?
It can be quite a bit. It's one of those situations where you have to ask, "Do I reeeeally need it? Or can I go with a local alternative?".
