I am a drum teacher of 25 years and have played drums for almost 40 years. I am a member of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers and Percussive Arts Society(also certified PAS rudimental teacher). I put a lot of emphasis on paper hand technique, body motions and the rudiments. I have found all of this helps immensely on the drum set.

What do you think about overear earmuffs? I've been trying them out lately, and I kinda like em. My main gripe is that they can resonate a bit, especially with bass tones.
I haven't used those so I can't say anything to their sound. But, I know Vic Firth has a good set of over the ear isolating ear phones. I would say if you are getting resonance inside the phone, that's not going to be good. I would say put ear plugs in as well. The constant resonating is what will cause the hearing loss. but, anything will help some...I use to use ripped up bar napkins when I didn't have plugs, they weren't great but helped some at the time. Here is a link to the new phones from Vic Firth, vicfirth.com/products/vic-firth-bluetooth-isolation-headphones I have heard really good things and that they are with the money. I believe you can still find their old "muffs" as well. Thank you for stopping by and watching!

This needs to be heard! Lots of us teenagers think we are invincible but I know it will definitely catch up in the future. Ear plugs are extremely important.
Well said! My hearing loss started when I started when I started playing drums and in my teen years.
great info , love your channel, new here
Thank you very much! Welcome! Thanks for watching!
Also, and my apologies for hogging your comment section ... this is one of my favourite beats ... do you use any more involved or syncopated kick patterns with the fast train (single strokes) beat? Or perhaps you know of some good songs which do so, which I could use for reference. All the best.
I can't say I have ever used more complicated bass drum patterns, and I don't know if there are any, at least for that version of the beat. BUT! If you check out "Poor Tom" from Led Zeppelin, Bonham uses a hand to hand eighth note pattern on the snare and a great bass drum part. Here's a link to Zeppelin playing it. I really love your snare tone. Any chance you can demonstrate the pitch of each head while lightly damping the other head? cheers.
Thank you! it's one of the snares that when I got the hoop, head, tuning combo down I was in love!
Gotta love a good train beat. I call the "one handed" version with the flam on the back beat, a "slow train beat" ... and the two handed / alternating singles a "fast train beat".
Yes! I love the train...Such fun. I never thought about them slow v fast, but it does seem that's what they are...Thanks so much for watching! And all the comments!

Great breakdown of the train beat!

Those toms are way too high
This is your opinion. John Bonham, Alex Van Halen are just two that tune high like this. Like I said in the video, tuning is subjective. I like my toms on the higher side, not dead, boxy and thuddy. Higher tuned drums allow the OHs to capture the drums sound.
@@brandonfaulknermusic snare sounds fantastic though

Your effing k ride is in the way so can’t actually see what you’re doing. Bye
Hell yea!
Hell Yea! You almost got this for your lesson last night!
Helpful technique --- the finger in the middle of the head and adding pressure. Timpanists sometimes use a similar technique, just touching the head's center, when getting a particular pitch.
You know I think I have heard that. It is a great way to get a good starting point when tuning. I wish I could find where I first saw it...Thank you for watching!
Thank you. As with many things about drums, there is information overload on how to tune. I ended up choosing an approach similar to yours and now I feel more confident I'm not missing something... like tuning to a note. This video gave me some more perspective. I was disappointed though to see you only line up the logos by eye with no tools or measurements🙂!
Thank you so much! The main thing I was hoping to do with this video is give a good over all perspective. It seems everyone now days wants a device to tell them how to tune, your ear is the best tool. I have found that what I show here has worked the best and quickest for me though the years. Thanks so much for the comment and Thanks you for watching! (And don't get me started with lining up logos...I'll pull out some protractors and retractors and get them lined up by NASA satellites! hahahah) Thanks so much!
Hey, great video. Long time drummer here who needs to work on some fundamental technique stuff. I have a problem I was hoping you might be able to help me with, I play match grip by the way: When I play double strokes, I don't have the same feeling of control over the stick with the fingers on my left hand as I do on my right, and the stick doesn't hit the same exact spot on the snare, it sort of moves a bit side to side. Whereas with my right, both hits in the double stroke will be in the exact same spot. My top speed for having clean sounding double strokes is around 120 bpm with 32nd notes. The way I play double strokes is by using my wrist for the first hit, and then my fingers for the second.
Thanks such for the comment! This is a great topic of discussion as well. I have had the same issue with my left hand as well. It will be hard to diagnose without seeing you play, but, make sure your hand is moving straight up and down. I know this seems like a no brainer but my hand has a tendency to twist slightly vs up/down and this cause some movement of the stick.I would say start by using a mirror and watch what your hand is doing, you may think both hands are moving the same but there may be a slight twist which will throw your left stick out of center. The next thing I would look at is how are you holding the stick?(well, really this would be first) I have a few videos on how to hold the stick and hand movement on the channel. I also have students that came to me with somewhat the same issue. To help fix it, first, use the mirror to make sure you're not twisting your hand, then, without sticks, put your hands on a flat surface or your knees and practice moving as you would in a double, using wrist strokes. Don't worry about speed, make sure you move slow and deliberate. Then grab your sticks and do the same, using wrist strokes(don't worry about fingers or bounce). If your hand is doing what mine was, just need a little retraining on the movement. Then bring the rebound stroke back. That's the best advice I can give without seeing you play doubles. If you'd like go deeper, we can. I do have some videos on doubles on my channel too. If you'd like to go deeper, I'm happy to help... Thanks so much for watching!
@@brandonfaulknermusic I'll do that, thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Why not end with playing them?
I felt like I demoed enough...The playing wasn't what this was about.
Don't they! I see all these videos on Ytube of some technically amazing players and the drums sound shite. So weird.
Yep! I agree! However, There are a few that have great sounding kits! but the majority...
Thank you, sir. Very informative video. I’m not getting the punch I’d like to be getting out of my bass drum. You mentioned the Powerstroke 3 black dot as being the best head ever. Is that coated or clear? Also, what should I be using for a resonant head? Thank you, in advance.
Great question. I'm going to base my answer on a 22" bass drum. The P3 Black Dot is a great head, now my personal favorite is the P3 coated. I am just a fan of coated heads. I have a YAMAHA 22/16 with the P3 Black Dot and a P3 reso. Very solid sounding bass drum. Hole in the reso head. I have the batter tuned just over wrinkle and the reso about a medium tension. I will sometimes use P3 coated with an Ambassador reso with a DW pillow in the drum, same tuning. That gives me a nice solid punch. The beast thing I'd say is to experiment(as best you can with in your budget) I have only come to where I am after many years and many heads. Thanks for watching!
great kit
Thank you! Thank you for watching!
Oh no my labels are not aligned… 😱 Will have to refit them and try follow your steps 👍
The alignment of the heads with the logo is totally an OCD thing on my part...it has no bearing on sound. Just one of those quirks I've developed over the years....Thanks for watching!
@@brandonfaulknermusic yeah I get it 😂
first make sure the head sits right under the rim
Yes.
Nice! Thanks for the demos at the end of your video, that was awesome playing you did there too! Bonham the legend, not my era but I love Led Zeppelin stuff & playing me some In My Time Of Dying is a must here & there. I have practised these rock fills heaps & really had to level up my game when I first started learning to play Grohl's A Song For The Dead, the solo at the very end. It was pretty much what you played in this video when you brang the snare in. I really should get my left foot involved more, defintely my weak point for these when I try using my left foot rather than right. As always thanks again for your video!
Thank you so much for being so engaging and letting me know that these are being watched and helping! Yea these trios are very old school but they still work, sound great and are fun to play! And yes Dave uses them A LOT! I think drummers these days have forgotten about them...I have some more fill ideas like this coming soon. Again, Thank you so much for the feedback and engagement! If you ever want to go deeper on these types of things let me know...I think I left my email on this...Have a great day! and Thank you!
@@brandonfaulknermusic Yea definitely. No probs Brandon I'm learning a lot. I've always self taught myself but I want to start getting proper lessons soon. Brandon If I said you could only choose 1 genre to recommend for lessons & that genre would make it easier to pick up or learn other genres, would you say that would be Jazz?? Cheers.
Hey Brandon! ahhh flams, you made that loook easy when also getting the kick involved & changing it around, man takes a lot of body co-ordination, definitely now on my practise list, thanks for that. Yea that Dave Grohl intro, short simple & sweet, he bacially taught me how to drum :) His intro to A Song For The Dead has a few nice flams. So where do chops fit into all this Brandon? Are rudiments & chops kinda related? I really want to master my chops but not sure how to go about it. Are they really just different combos of paradiddles? I've recently been watching Zach Grooves drum channel here on utube, as he's really popular for his chops, so that's been helping me get a start I guess. Thanks for the time you put in your videos.
Ahhhh yes...chops. You ask a great question. The first thing to do is define chops. Is it what Zack does? Is it what Dave Growl does? What I'm guessing you are asking here, it is what Zack does. In a nut shell, yes, he is just playing combinations of singles and doubles and some flams. Then linear patterns around the drum set at high rates and moving between subdivisions. And there are a lot of people on TH-cam that will show you combinations of stickings that will equate to "chops". What I would suggest is get really good at moving through your rudiments and then start applying them to the drum set. Also, like in my paradiddle video, practice playing them between your hands and feet. Once you master them, then increase the rate at which you play them. I would suggest, and this is something I talk with my students about as well, have a serious talk with yourself about what type of drummer do you want to be and what do you want to do. From there then start practicing for that thing.I will say this, I have never been hired because I can play a mean drum solo...I hope that helps! And thank you so much for being engaging and asking such great questions!
@@brandonfaulknermusic Hi! Yea sorry definitely Zach Grooves regarding chops & not Grohl haha! Thanks for your advice Brandon, got it. Definitely will do that. Cheers.
Yes. Drums should have ring and tone. If I wanted a boxy sound, I would get a cardboard box! I don't believe in mufflers, pillows or any other non-drum additions. Your choice of method and heads is perfect. Thank you!
Thank you very much! I also want my drums to sound good without mics! So tuning them like this helps! I will also us different heads and tunings depending on what I'm doing and what's called for...but over all, what I do in this video is me...Let's try to make this tuning popular again! hahaha Thank you so much for the kind words and Thank You for watching!
That's one way to do it.
Thanks for watching!
Here are some more info on tuning.... Russ Miller- th-cam.com/video/_a3EjAohUzU/w-d-xo.html Remo Clear- th-cam.com/video/0DK3BSGxYkE/w-d-xo.html Remo coated- th-cam.com/video/uZNgeMQbjK0/w-d-xo.html
I see a lot of drum tuning videos where they speak of the relationship between the two heads of a double-headed drum. Most people tap on one head and then reach over and tap the other head without muting the opposing head. Maybe to their ears they can hear a difference but on the video and in real life it's very hard to distinguish the pitch difference. All you have to do is gently touch or muffle the opposing head that you're not striking to hear that pitch. Just remember to mute the head you're not striking and the pitch difference between the two heads will be much easier to hear.
@@davidchandler9311 You are absolutely right! That bugs me too! If you don't mute one head you can't distinguish what you're hearing. When I tap one head then the other unmuted, I'm only listening for the difference between top and bottom...I don't get nerdy when tuning, I listen to make sure the drum has a nice pitch bend and then that the kit sounds good as a whole...tweak from there. Thanks for the comment and Thanks for watching!
