First Light with the 10” RC Telescope and Observatory Flat Panel (OFP2)
Welcome back, astrophotographers! Join us as we explore the exciting setup and first light of our new 10" RC astrograph reflector-a telescope renowned for its sharp star shapes and robust collimation. In this video, we take you through the unboxing, setup, and customization process, including attaching a field rotator, autofocuser, and tackling challenges like dew prevention. A standout highlight is the Observatory Flap Panel (OFP)-an innovative flat calibration tool we tested for the first time. This unique design simplifies calibration with features like a compression ring and sideways motion, solving mounting challenges with our custom clamps.
We tested this 25kg setup on the EQ6R-Pro mount, pushing its limits at 1600mm focal length. Despite initial skepticism, the mount performed well, delivering round stars during imaging sessions. For first light, we captured the Deer Lick Group and Stephan’s Quintet.
Stick around to see our post-processed first light image and hear our thoughts on upgrades, tinkering, and the joy of solving challenges in astrophotography. Clear skies, and enjoy the journey!

Comet ATLAS A3 first light with WO MiniCat 51!
มุมมอง 3.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
On my second and third attempts to capture Comet Atlas A3 using the William Optics MiniCat 51 telescope, the weather was significantly more favorable than on my previous outing. The skies were much clearer, with minimal cloud cover, allowing for better visibility and imaging conditions. Last month, I gave my refractors a well-deserved break and brought out the trusty ONTC Newtonian Reflector. Two common challenges with these types of telescopes are collimation and flat frame calibration. Astrophotograhy on island of Cres, using first ASIAIR supported field rotator!

Between July 27th and August 1st, we enjoyed a short family vacation on the island of Cres. Given the island's decent dark skies, I decided to bring my astrophotography gear along. At home, the southern sky is too light-polluted for good astrophotography, so this trip was a perfect opportunity to capture southern celestial objects. Normally, I only take a tracker or my Sony mirrorless camera, b...

Pre-orders? Need a 70mm

Very clever! Congratulations on the idea. 🙂
for my home built setup i use a Mele quiter 3c unit with windows and Allskeye software, inside a sealed box. Can this be adapted to support a mele pc unit instead of raspberry card. i have one standard power cable going into my current unit andi have a little adapter that converts standard power to 5 V DC USB c. I do not currently have heater setup. So something like yours would be nice.
if your camera is supported by allskeye, it would work. But we would have to sort out mounting of the PC inside the enclosure. Please send us an email to info@deepskydad.com and we can discuss custom adaptation details :)
Clear skies!
Your flat panel moving around might not cause too much of a weight shift, but the wind might catch it like a big sail. Good luck!
Yes, the sail effect could cause some tracking issues. I personally do not image if there is any wind, because that usually means bad seeing and tracking problems regardless of flat panel.
Brilliant! I bet you are happy with your new scope. I would be :)
@@pompeymonkey3271 so far its been great 😊
Awesome! your video motivate me to make a gear like yours in the future, of course I'll follow you!
Would there be any way to get that flat panel to rotate 90 degrees after opening so it can lay flat against the telescope? The way it is I'd be afraid a large wind gust would just rip it right off the telescope.
The standard FP2, opens the way you describe (and is tucked away against the telescope tube). The idea of this solution is to move only sideways, so no extra space is required in the front or the back of the panel. I think the wind gusts would have to be quite significant to rip the panel off (so in my opinion, imaging in such conditions would not make sense anyway :))
Great video, love your observatory, simple but functional, excellent.
Thank you! I always wanted a minimalistic design, as it suffices for backyard requirements.
Great analysis, thank you! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
lovely video, pavle. Can't wait for that 0FP2!
Wow, it looks superb to me.
thank you!
👍
Wow, at the end of the video you have about 30kg counterweight on the EQ6R-Pro, that's a lot of weight for that mount, I'm surprised it still works perfect with that much weight. The Stainless counterweights are very interesting, thinking of buying those, but how about shipping costs ? But I was wondering, what is that mounted on your mount, in the place of the polarscope cap ?
Yes, are pushing the limits with this telescope, we will see how it performs throughout the winter. For the counterweights, drop us an email to info@deepskydad.com and we can check the shipping cost for your location. Instead of polar cap, we are using an encoder which compensates for RA mechanical errors hence improving the tracking (we also replaced stock circuit with our custom prototype telescope controller).
@@DeepSkyDadHi. The enconders is your design? They are available for purchase? Thanks
@@brunofigueira4970 it is in prototype phase, but we do plan to offer it as an upgrade at some point. However, one thing to keep in mind is that this will require replacing stock circuit of the mount.
I too am VERY interested purchasing that RA encoder to tame the EQ6-R periodic error. It's amazing it can guide 1600mm overloaded by so much. The encoder must be working very well.
Kr konkretno tole :D. Sam razgled na KSA imate pa zelo lep... čist za kakšen deepscape :D.

Just WoW!!! BTW, does your Flap Panel work with ZWO ASI 2600MC Air? Is there anything else needed to make it work since I can't control output voltages? Thank you and amazing telescope!!!
@@Chiclets1 we have yet to test it with 2600MC air. Will let you know!
I read air does not let you control power outlets. Influenced my decision to buy a plus recently since I am waiting for my 4th flat panel. 😊 Would be good to know for sure if it works or not.
@@dm1787 we never tested one hands on and are waiting for a feedback. But I think you might be correct. If the ports have fixed 12V voltage, control is not possible via ASI2600MC Air. I am a bit surprised though, never even thought they might have removed a handy feature like that :)
Hi - will this be available for 204mm external diameter scopes? This year?
Yes for 204mm, but not this year. Probably in Q1 of 2025
Hello Pavle ! What did you use for your products EL panel Led strip ? Does the illumination is regular ? I've tested lot of DIY flat panel and its seems that led strips with LGP and Acrylid diffuser are bests for good flats. Regards
@@raphglc7521 LED :)
Here because I'm looking for a way to automate my flats and bias frames. This seems like a potential solution but..... will it work with the new 3 in 1 ZWO ASI2600 Air without adjustable power outputs? If not, could I add something like a PegasusAstro Powerbox to make your flap panel work on my rig?
@@Chiclets1 we are in process of testing cable on asi2600 air. As for pegasus, you mean asiar cable on variable port of power box?
Did you use the meike sony e to canon ef converter?

Thanks, just placed my order for my RedCat 51! I'm going to place my RedCat 51 in a remote observatory in Texas and this will be a key piece of gear to make the placement in a remote observatory successful. Much appreciated! 👍👍
Does this panel close tightly enough to prevent light leaks when shooting dark frames?
@@brianmiller4729 if prevents stray light entering the OTA pretty good, but its advisable to make dark frames after sunset
Looks like a great project. I hope you will make one for the 11" SCTs... I would love to have one in my observatory
soon my observatory will be ready, and I was thinking of ordering a flat panel (FP2), but after watching this video I will wait))
We will prepare more details when available :) The main difference is that OFP2 opens sideways to a custom position, so it doesn't require additional space in front of the telescope.
@@DeepSkyDad thanks for the information👍

One thing I noticed but forgot to mention is that while watching live video footage, I was shocked by the sheer number of Starlink satellites ( I assume those are Starlinks, based on their trajectories and brightness). There are at least a few in every frame...
Low in the sky Starlinks are like locust in a corn field. BTW, thank you for the FP2, works perfectly 🙏
Elon Musk, wanking his fragile ego all over the night sky...
Some nice images. I managed to capture it from my back yard with my EOS 600D crop sensor DSLR and a 50mm lens . I was lucky, it was just to one side of a large tree, but that actually made the comet stand out more and gave the images some context.
Fantastic videos & images! I like the 'Minicat" on the flat panel too. Thank you for sharing! Question: Were the images taken through the WO MiniCat 51 with an APSC sensor, or a full-frame sensor?
Thank you! Images were taken with Sony A7S II (Full Frame sensor). Disclaimer: due to the fact MiniCat is f/3.5, the corners have to be corrected with BXT even at APS-C sensor format (this is also mentioned under telescope specs on official website)
@@DeepSkyDad Thanks for the info! Yes, I have heard that Williams Optics warns owners about the correction of the MiniCat51 (even with a APSC sensor). Did you find that BXT was able to restore the star shapes to what one would get with a properly-corrected field? I wonder if using aperture rings to stop the MiniCat51 down to f/4 or f/4.5 would solve the problem. Perhaps WO will come out with a field flattener for the MiniCat?51
@@derekbaker3279 I have yet to test this on a deepsky target as soon as the sky clears. For starless comet shots it worked ok :)))
I tested the Minicat before returning it due to the heavy coma those corner stars show. However, even with an APS-C sensor, the star shapes can be corrected using BlurXT. You won‘t notice it in the final image^^

Thank you for previewing the new WO 'Minicat 51'. I am looking forward to seeing the first astro images you capture! Question: Is the sensor in your Sony camera APSC size or full-frame?
@@derekbaker3279 my Sony is full frame. However, I think for deep sky, you need to use BXT or something similar for corners in postprocess - even for APS-C (this is also stated in official spec of the OTA)
Congrats on the new release!
Can it run a dsd flat panel simultaneously? Serious game changer
You need 2 control ports on ASIAIR - one for flat panel and one for field rotator. The remaining 2 ports are for powering and can be split with our DC HUB for example
Very nice! I have the first gen for my 80mm. I plan to eventually get one for my 8in RC. Before I got your motorized panel I always had issues with bad flats. I tried an iPad, I tried a tracing pannel, I tried t-shirt flats, sky flats. There was always some kind of issue. Now between the flat panel and NINA flats are easy and taken every session.
