Mainly journalling the conscientious renovation of a derelict coach house. Aiming to use reclaimed & sustainable materials where possible, whilst keeping the soul of the building alive too
Laying the floor and the roller door rears it's ugly head.
On with the floor and the levels don't seem to be working out with the roller door.
Thanks for watching, Max

The floor is really going down in the Abandoned Coach House

Floor, Glue, Screws, Ready! The insulation is going in too, it's going to be a really warm floor. It's all going well until the roller door kicks up a fuss. Thanks for watching, Max.
Plumbing seems to be a wet job when I do it.

Getting the pipes in before getting the floor down. I decided to use copper pipes which is a bit more time consuming but very enjoyable. Pipes are tested and waiting for the bathroom, downstairs toilet & bedroom radiator. Lovely. Thanks for watching, Max. Building a Hoist for the Abandoned Coach House

Whacking big lumps of hot metal with a hammer is so much fun, especially when the steel turns into a hoist for lifting heavy things upstairs. Hopefully saving sweat and tears. Admittedly, part of the reason for needing the hoist is due to the spiral stairs being completely impractical for lugging things in-between floors. For the past year or so I've been searching for a vintage hoist like you ...
Installing Solar Panels in the Wind | In-Roof System GSE
มุมมอง 3.4K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Probably the only windy day in July and we are on a roof installing Solar Panels, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. I hope you don't mind but the video isn't from Round Corner this time, it's showing you a Solar PV install. The system is in-roof, it is a part of the roof structure so there's no need to tile or slate underneath the solar panels. Rich & I are installing the system, Howard ...
Abandoned Coach House Conversion: Plastering the Living Room
มุมมอง 1.5K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Living Room progress in the Abandoned Coach House / Barn Conversion. Using Gypsum & then Lime over the wood fibre insulation. They both have their uses but doing both so close together, one really appreciates how much more work is involved in a Hot Mix Lime Plaster. So worth it in my opinion. I hope you don't mind but I've also snuck making Ziggy a reclaimed cat scratching post to try and deter...

Building a Porch for the Coach House / Barn Conversion. I got this wooden door off eBay for £150.00, the only snag is it had been outside for quite some time so needed a bit of TLC but what a bargain! The reclaimed Timber is an old joist I removed from the building and I'm using threaded bar & resin anchor to fix the door into as I don't want to show any fixings onto the exposed brick. Thanks f...

Spiral Stairs for the Abandoned Coach House & Floor Joist and Window Install

Getting close with the spiral stairs and the 1st Floor in the Coach House / Barn Conversion, it's been a brain teaser trying to figure out how best to connect the stairs to the floor structure. Really pleased with how solid they now feel after bending some flat bar and welding it all together. The hot mix lime pointing around the recently installed wooden window has been protected for two weeks...

Absolutely buzzing to be installing these spiral stairs into the Coach House / Industrial Barn Conversion and so glad I can share the install with you. Nice video, good to see it done for real rather than GSE's promos. How did you get the slate tiles to sit neatly over the lip of the lateral flashing? I'm reusing original clay plain tiles and I can't work it out. Bash the lip down? All the guides show arched tiles, which makes it easier.
Thanks. Yeah you’ve got it, just tap the aluminium down with a hammer where it’s interfering with the slate.
Can I ask what floor size you heating and what temps you able to get? That inline unit I like, you not heating a tank only the water in the floors. And yes might not be the best way to heat but you not heating 200lt of water. Brilliant
My solar diverter priorities my 200l Hot Water Tank, once that’s satisfied it will then put the surplus energy into the UFH slab. 11kWh is needed to raise the 50m2 slab temp 10 deg. This could be done using the lower priced off peak energy if no solar available. I use a log burner through the winter so not necessary. Hope that helps, Max
Please wear belt 😅
😂😳
Thank you for taking the time to make this, I really appreciate it. I am planning to DIY this with the assistance of a roofer. It's daunting and seeing the actual process is a massive help.
You’re welcome, glad it’s been helpful. Good luck with it, as long as you start right and get the trays at the correct height you can’t go too wrong. You may be surprised at how easy it is.
👍
👍
Funniest one yet haha! That part where the floor fires perfectly in the gap was 🤗🤌
Glad you liked it! Ooof it’s so rewarding when that happens
Really enjoy watching your progress.
Great to hear it!
.....we are semi-professional. LMAO 👍👍🤣🤣
😂 So funny
The unblocking of the window apertures will be transformative. Put a kitchen sink on a wheeled table and trundle it around to find the best kitchen location.
Won’t it just, looking forward to getting some windows in. I like the mobile sink idea.
well done, good to watch your progress
When your installing the half trays do you set the same space for all 4 vertical trays or no space between the 1st and 2nd panel?
👍
Good work mate
Thanks muchly
I have never seen anyone weld next to inclination
You haven’t lived
Nice progress.
That looks like morale boosting progress.
👌
Absolutely floored watching this 👏🏻
Saw right through that punning comment
@@theroundcorner great work though seriously impressive 👏🏻

This look fantastic. I like the bending rather than the use of 90 degree corners. Do you have to worry about inspectors?
Thanks. Me too, lower friction & two less connections to solder. Yes, my next inspection is due once all the insulation is in place on the walls.
This video made me as wet as that third pipe !
How heavy is the bath, and will it need to be winched up the outside?
I don’t know, guessing over 100kg? Definitely need to be winched up.
Why copper over Pex?
Such a good point. I was really on the fence, they both have good & bad sides but I like that copper is rodent proof, 15mm copper flow rate’s superior to equivalent plastic and you can melt copper again to reuse. As a material, I think it’s really enjoyable to use copper too - soldering is fun.
Not sure about the PEX rubber o-rings either.
@@theroundcornerfair enough! Those are good answers
Fair play, tidy work
looking good!
Coming along great, looking forward to how it turns out. I think a new pair of pants are in order, or a patch.
Haha you aren’t wrong!
Great content as always - making some real progress now!
Thanks, yeah it really feels like it’s coming together.
everything is semiprofessional
You are just going to have to trust me on this one; Ziggy is a very professional, full time cat.
Great to see you bring the building back to life
👍
Love your videos.
The building has come along way since I’ve been watching. It’s going to be so good when you’ve finished. 👏🥳
Great to hear as I often don’t feel like it’s progressing very much.
Love the house plate. Color is really nice
Me too, I love that green & gold combo.
Really really good. That sequence of putting up the ceiling insulating panels looked frustrating enough to warrant a "What the sweaty old fuck!!??" rant, off screen of course. Although perhaps just trying a different approach, cool and collected like you did on film is the sensible method.
😂 That made me chuckle, they were a pain & glad it’s done!
Love your channel! Keep up the good work! Such a nice and characterfilled building 😊
Hi mate, thanks for the video. We are in an old building with solid thick walls and considering using this to ensure breathability. Can you plaster directly onto the wood fibre or are you going to put plasterboard onto it?
Hey up, yes you can plaster straight over the woodfibre boards, ideal for your solid walls. I plaster over the boards in this vid: Abandoned Coach House Conversion: Plastering the Living Room th-cam.com/video/34XDGtzdlZY/w-d-xo.html I’m being a bit experimental by slaking my own lime, if you don’t want the faff I’d highly recommend reaching out to Tim at Eden Hot Lime Mortar, he’s super helpful & will be able to supply everything you need. Good luck with it, Max
Hi, love your solution to solar excess 👍 Just a couple of questions... Have you got any inhibitor in the underfloor heating water loop? As its usually "fresh water" the an immersion heating element heats up. And is there an expansion vessel in the system? As im thinking of upgrading existing underfloor heating to solar but keeping the gas boiler as a back/top up for times when no solar available. Thanks in advance. Regards Mark.
Hi Mark, Thanks! The loop has inhibitor in, I put this in when I filled it up for the first time. There’s an 8l expansion vessel which is actually overkill, when I figured it out I think it only needed something like 1.5l. Sounds like a good plan. I suppose the ideal solution would be to have battery storage & an ASHP as it’s effectively multiplying the energy when converted to heat. Good luck with it, Max
Now that PV panels are so dirt cheap, it could be cheaper to re-roof with panels than slates.
Yeah, it’s a no brainer if you’re re-roofing.
They way that insulation fitted once cut was 🤗🤌🤌🤌
So rewarding when that happens, oof!
Feeling your pain!
Excellent work with the hoist! I love when a plan comes together...
Thanks, capped to bits with it.
Excellent ending!
👍
At the end, what you were standing on was flexing summat wicked. I hope a helper showed up sooner rather than later.
It’s amazing how much it bends without snapping.
What a cliffhanger. Cant wait to see if those floorboards fit
It’s a pivotal moment
House Martins. Was that bench bolted down at Sourmire? You must have had it for 20+ years now.
Lots of house martins, there’s three nests on the building. I don’t think it was bolted down there, glad to have it set up, I’ve become quite attached to it.
Great Hoist well done. 👏👏
Thanks 🏗️
Why U do not brazing? U can use silver rod and mach coulor. Same with those tabs on railng. And do U use electrods for cast iron or try regular? Ni-Cl work grate. Not always, but more often. I tryed weld forge regular rod, and do not work at all, with Ni-cl was easy
Interesting, must say I don’t like the look of the welds but they are strong. Are you suggesting braze then rivet together? Not cast rods, they are E6013 2.5
It seems you can turn your hand to anything, great to see.
Sometimes with a decent chunk of failings & stubbornness
