Hey this was so helpful! Your work is beautiful and I’m happy to be learning from you. Thank you. I’m finishing up some pots from a raku workshop I attended recently. I do have a question about timing. The first few I did, I sprayed with the fix then waited an hour then waxed. Then will probably spray with the gloss tomorrow. Does that sound right?
@@JulieLerman Hey there! So glad you like my work and the video was helpful! Yes, that all sounds pretty good. For timing you may want to add a little of time in between those steps just so things can set a bit more. If you look at the drying details for each of the items it typically says how long that before touching/handling each piece after application. But generally yes! You’re right on track👍🏼

@@dneufeld62 Hi there! Yes, that is correct. All three on one pot. I’m also going to be experimenting with using ceramic floor tile polish on my next batch, which has potential to make some parts of the polishing process even quicker.

I love the way you stack your plates! How important is it to leave a space between the half kiln shelves?
@@BertilleParsons Oh thanks so much! It’s not so important to leave a space between the half shelves. If you’re concerned about the space between the shelves in regards to your plates I’d have them fairly close together but it wouldn’t make a big difference either way. What I have learned greatly since I posted this video is that having a completely flat surface is very vital for having flat plates. I have since gotten advancer shelves for my kiln and that has been a complete game changer. But in general, the more that is in the kiln the slower it will get to temp and cool down, so if leaving space between the shelves also is connected for you to how long it will affect the cool down cycle, it won’t really make much difference for the space between the shelves.

I've done a few rounds of obvara. Mine torn out darker than i want. Is that bc the pot is too hot? I do it with a regular raku firing up to 1800+ at a studio, so i take them out last so they cool a little and i even hold them in the air for a moment. I also know they burn in the air after putting them in the mixture, so i put them in the water quickly. Any thoughts? Your work is beautiful.

i find it amazing the partially supported plates didn’t warp, is that why you’re under firing your clay? nice work, beautiful plates
Surprising, right? Some absolutely warped because they were not supported but I would highly recommend not doing what I did in the video😂 As the kiln gets to its peak temp, the clay is much more malleable and if not on a flat surface it will definitely warp. I didn’t know that at the time of the video but it’s a big time help for the plates. Thanks so much for watching!
I wouldn't expect the top coat to stick well over the Ren wax..
Thank you for the demo, Doug. You said that the flung sugar left a bit of a sticky residue on one of the pots. Will that come off with washing or do you risk losing some of the obvara effect if you rub or scrub?
Hi, Nina! My pleasure, so glad you liked it! Yes, if you gently apply some water the effect should be just fine. The only issue is that the obvara effect will fade when left in direct sunlight over time. I made another video on my page about some fixatives, wax and UV protective coatings that you can apply to raku ware to help bolster their longevity. Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching!
Totally love what you do. Probably a silly question but can you apply this technique to already made vases (no glazed), heating them up and then firing? Sorry, just curious.

Hi great video, thank you! Question: how do you go about not glazing the bottom of your pieces so that they are still machine washable and they don’t absorb any moisture when you use them? Is it depending on your clay being mid and high range fire? I decorate my pieces with underglaze, and then glaze with clear, so I always fire to low fire range. Thanks again, great video for know how to stack those plates!

@@leonibenzaken2581 Hi there! Yes, the product I alluded to is called Liquid Quartz. That is a fancy, best working option, I’d think. But you could also use ceramic sealants, like a floor polish or something else in that nature.
I am right now making a dinner set. I want to inquire whether it’s better to fire the whole set both for bisque and for glaze fire together or will it really matter. Thank you

Thanks for sharing ; in your experience, how long dos the smoke print lasts? Is it recomendable to add some more uv protection and wax every one and then? Thanks.
Hey, there! Left untreated and in regular/direct sunlight the patterning would begin to notably lighten within a month or so. But if it is treated with a fixative, wax and especially the UV coating they should last for quite a long time. I have been using this method now for over a year and have not had any bad fading happen. That being said, I do recommend keeping these sorts of pieces out of direct sunlight just to help protect them. As yes, you can add more UV protective coatings afterward in the future.

When i saw you weren't putting thrm flat i was thinking oowwww nooo. Because lik a few months ago i had to learn the same lesson the hard way lol. But now i know it's not done. Will never make that mistake again. Your plates look amazing though. I love the color combo of the clay and the glaze!

Hi, there! The shelves that they provided are definitely adequate but nothing too special, to be honest. They are just slices of half inch or 3/4 inch plywood, which is very strong! I don't usually put wet ware on them but I do use them for holding ware that is leather hard and then bone dry. Also I have some sheets of plastic that I have layered over each shelf so that the moisture does not compromise the shelves at all. Has been working out great and I think you'll love it!

My pleasure! Yes, absolutely give it a try! It is such an incredible process. One tip I'd share is that it seems more safe for the pot to ease it into the water (or even expose it to the water in parts) so that it can more gradually cool down. When I submerged a pot completely really quickly they had a higher likelihood of cracking. Hope you have a great time with it! It's really so much fun.
Do you need to keep the water at 100 degrees or is room temperature OK?
