I have been buying 2’s and 4’s in both 2 3/4 and 3”. I would figure that the 4’s would be good for most ducks. I will very much admit I am not a waterfowl hunter and this year will be kinda the first year I will really hunt birds.

Try patterning these different brands on paper and then come tell me there’s no difference. Marksmanship comes first but your absolutely missing out if you’re not patterning your shotgun and finding the best shells for it

I like #2’s for mixed hunts. If it’s a GOOSE hunt usually 1’s or BB. Have used 3’s as well.

2 3/4 " 1 1/2 oz load 4shot . Fastlead is good too

I accidentally bought a box of 2 3/4 inch BB steel this year for goose instead of my regular 3 inch. I didn’t notice any difference.

I often see videos about how to get the big mature bucks to your property or so on and so forth, but for me it’s about my freezer. In the natural world as a predator you don’t have the luxury to wait for the prey with the best inedible antler display. Now if I’m out and a big old buck just happens across my shooting lane? Absolutely, but I’m just as excited if not moreso about the bounty of food rather than the art of the wall.

Though I agree with a lot of what you say, I think there is real value in patterning and shooting what patterns best which can actually increase your range you can shoot birds too. I have made noticeably farther shots with 3" #2 low velocity(1450) that pattern well than all the BB and heavy hitting loads that don't pattern well in my gun and usually head shots at that. Taking a look at my patterns tell me why that by taking one quick look at the pattern.

I agree totally. As a baby boomer who grew up with lead, modern high speed steel will kill as good as lead at any reasonable range. The last couple of years I have even moved down to a 20 gauge sometimes, not always though. I prefer 3 s if I have them.

I would say if you dont want the 3inch recoil go to the 2 3/4 with heavier shot. Bismuth....

I disagree not much difference in recoil from 12 to 20 gauge as normally 20 gauge is a lighter gun

I'm 47 and still haven't been out hunting, didn't grow in a hunting family, lived always in the city, no I moved to rural Alberta and can't wait to get started hunting so that I can also teach my kids.

I know exactly how you feel. He just doesn't understand how regular people live in this country. My kids loved going hunting just like your family. We are not out driving around looking for people to hurt. We need food to eat. We have our guns locked up and bullets are in a different place locked up.

Hunters and ethical take methods are the single best wildlife management tool available to biologists, land managers, and other government wildlife/ecosystem managing agencies. I will even go so far to say that most hunters have a deeper love care and respect for animals and their habitat than some couch/keyboard warrior who loves to shout about animal cruelty whilst turning a blind eye to how cruel nature itself really is. The idea of deer is more important than “the deer” itself.

I've hunted ducks since the good old days of lead shot. Patterning a shotgun at 30-40 yards is very important . Brand X may have holes in the pattern resulting in cripples or no duck at all. While Brand Y brings home the birds and makes the hunts a lot more memorable, just my opinion.

So on one hand you are totally right. Shooting ability trumps all. On the other hand, not all steel is created equal. Brand doesn't matter but quality steel can have 50% or more pattern efficiently compared to the cheapest stuff on the shelf. A few dollars can really get you drastically better steel. It's the difference of hitting birds you are aiming at and patterns birds can fly through.

Only made it to the 1:57 mark. Arrogant. Patterning is the first thing that should be mentioned. I don’t care how accurate you are if YOUR shotgun is shooting patterns with holes the size of bowling balls accuracy means nothing. Go watch surviving duck seasons newest videos and figure it out.
