Fitting an external GPS module to a TYT MD-9600 mobile DMR radio
In this video, I show how to connect to the existing GPS connections in a TYT MD-9600 mobile DMR radio, so that an external GPS module can be connected via the back panel of the radio.
In my case I have a flying lead out of the back of the radio.
The version 4A / version 5 radios have a rubber blanking plug in the back of the radio, which can be removed and used as an access path for the GPS cable.
Older models would require a hole to be drilled or filed into the back of the radio, or possibly a socket fitted to the top or side of the radio.
For a better installation of a socket in the radio, the main PCB would need to be removed, as there is space on the back panel, below the external speaker jack, but because I have a V4A / V5 radio I was able to use the blanked section of the upper rear part of the radio for the exit point of the GPS cable

In this video I show the internal hardware of TYT MD2017 dual band FM/DMR radio, and attempt to do some technical analysis of the hardware design One slight correction. The LEDs PCB is attached facing the other way, and rests against the side of the chassis casting, does not rely on the solder joints alone to hold it in place. The LEDs PCB has to be removed before the main PCB can be detached f...

IMPORTANT. New radios do not use a genuine STM CPU, and the previously release firmware files will not work with this radio. However we have just found a solution to this problem and the updated firmware will be available soon TYT / Retevis changed the CPU chip used in this radio, sometime at the end of 2022, which made it incompatible with the firmware. The new radios have an unmarked clone of...

This video shows the external and internal similarities between the Radioddity GD-77 and Baofeng DM-1801 aka DM-860 , DMR / FM dual band handheld transceivers. The PCB has DM-1801 printed on it, but the chassis has a label reading DM-860 In the video I said the radio had an antenna switch chip. I have since found that this is not correct, hence why I could not see something looking like a switc...

Thanks for video explaining everything
Thanks Roger do we need to change firmware to GPS ?
No. The normal firmware will detect a GPS is fitted.
Is there a way to hardware reset this radio?
The link for the Radioddity firmware on your website is broken
Firmware not showing up like that..
Can I install gd77 on a 2024 version tyt md-uv380?
Yes. FYI. Some batches of10W versions of this radio had manufacturing problems with the brightness of the LCD screen. However TYT now seemed to have resolved their manufacturing problems. 5W versions didn't ever seem to have this problem
Does the control head shell metal or plastic?
Is the front panel case metal or plastic?
What's the point of the hole in the metal chassis covered by the label?
Hello Roger this is Wolfi OE1WBS. I followed your Instructions and turned my TYT 2017 into a fantastic satellite radio. I came across your website and your videos because we are the dealing with the antenna rotors and satellite operations in our club during the last weeks. After many hours with connecting my other rigs of well known manufacturers to communicate with software like gpredict (which is fine too) its a pleasure to have a radio that calculates and corrects Doppler-shift on its own. Your work will give a major impulse on our Austrian ham community. Thank and 73 from Vienna.
Original Chip is: JS-H210. If you need schematic of the board i have it.
Did anyone else notice the USB cable for the '1701 is different than the ones for the Retivis RT-3S and TYT MD-UV 380 (these two are compatible). I wonder if internally, the cable has wires crossed. 73 DE N2GJ
Its well documented that Baofeng swap the USB D+ and D- data connections in their cables, compared to other manufacturers like TYT and Anytone etc.
I've got the '1701 (US$45 with NM sales tax, arrived in a week). I've burned the openGD77 firmware and downloaded the codeplug I've used on my two other DMR HTs that have also been modified. Quick question: when I put my local GMRS repeater in the codeplug and created a zone for GMRS, it puts the date in the radio fine.. However, attempting to transmit, I get a predicted "OUT OF BAND" message. Is there any way to open it up? Curious. Thanks!
Which external GPS module did you use?
Aesome! Looks pretty easy.. Roger, quick question.. Are the new models of the RT3S compatible with open gd77? A while back I thought i saw mention of the new chips not being compatible?
If you mean the 10W radios. Then Yes. OpenGD77 now supports the different hardware in the 10W radios. However there seem to have been some manufacturing problems with the 10W radios, where the screens are not as bright as they should be. This is not a firmware compatibility problem, owners of the 10W radio have found that the wrong value resistor has been fitted to the display backlight. BTW. If you are referring to the updates to the encryption functions of the official firmware. OpenGD77 doesn't and will never support encryption for legal reasons, and AFWK there is no hardware difference in these radios related to encryption
@@vk3kyy Perfect, thanks for your work
Hi Roger, make more videos! Great explanation!
NECESITO CAMBIAR EL COLOR DE LA PANTALLA Y NO SE COMO HACERLO, ADEMAS QUIERO QUITAR ESAS FRECUENCIAS QUE SE VEN Y NO SE COMO HACERLO, ESO NO FUE EXPLICADO EN EL VIDEO
great job on all firmwares!!!!
Hi does the baofeng 1801 open gd77 support voice promts?
TANHT Halil Thank you, it's nice. I couldn't find the wattage setting. I was going to use 250mw and 3w. My location is mountainous. If you can inform me, thank you 73
I have one of these radios, and with less than an hour of normal operation, the unit failed to transmit a clean signal. Its now under my desk. No support, no available info on issues or schematics that i could find. Its just another piece of chinese junk.
I notice a few links on the web instruction are now dead.
Hi, whats the overall benifit of using this firmware? Does it allow more contacts to download and overcome the 120,000 limit.
Can i send you my tyt md-2017, ill pay you to reprogram it.
Does this radio transmit in the CB Radio 27.Mhz band?
i think so
What is the point of this video? It does nothing to inform me, which is irritating. It plays an irrelevant "music' track, that too is irritating. A pointless waste of my time watching it.
Is the pinout for the programming cable different on the RT3S to the Baofeng DM1701? I made my own cable for the DM1701 but my pc says the RT3S is an unrecognised device, its not a driver issue, its the USB itself failing to find a device ID.
? What is that bro😂😂😂😂
and now for the DR-1801UV ... fingers crossed actually, better to finish the MD-2017 support first
DR 1801 will never be possible. It can't be updated because it does NOT use a normal CPU and chipset, it only contains a Chinese DMR + RF module used in some mobile phones, with interface only via RS232
@@vk3kyy never say never. What about MD380UV or MD390UV.
I just finished updating my RT82 to the openGD77 firmware. First impressions are very good and it's working great.
Is there a relocation kit for the head ?
G4EML designed a remote head system. See www.opengd77.com/viewtopic.php?t=3040 Or google "opengd77 MD9600 remote head"
@@vk3kyy thank you been looking everywhere for one lol
Is there a difference in the versions of the radios if so what are they?
Thanks. 👌🙂 The GPS in my RT82 never worked until I installed this.👍
Why do you need to update the firmware? Does the firmware fix problems or add features? If it fixes problems or adds features, that should be stated at the beginning of your video! If there isn’t a good reason to update the firmware, what’s the point of updating the firmware, because updating firmware sometimes fails on some devices, and then you end up with a non-functional device!
May i have the cps GD77 password please
bonjour j ai fait comme sur votre video j ai l image à l envers que faire merci
Danger! Many Baofeng DM1701 from China, has the Program Cable is the TX and RX at the other, not at the right Site.
you should have used the "internal" GPS with a SMA pigtail out the back of the radio, this is how it should be done.
Using a external GPS module reduces signal loss down the RF cable. Many commercial radios use external serial GPS modules, e.g. the Codan HF transceivers use this method. However using a GPS module that has a RF socket will also work
@@vk3kyy yes, but those provide a proper multipin connector to it, while this has only an UFL. This was meant to have just an antenna, with a SMA to UFL pigtail for the internal pathway, no actual internal antenna. Maybe it could support an active antenna by sending power through the coax, see PCB traces.
Thanks for the video. I installed on my TYT MD-2017 and it's working very well.
OK. Thanks
Hi, does OpenGD77 support SMS? I see the GitHub description and it states it doesnt, but I wanted to ask someone.
Great demonstration! Are you going to do the same with installing GPS on the GD-77? 73!
Not at the moment, because its much more difficult to disassemble and reassemble the GD-77
This is great, thank you Roger, you are a master🍻
Great¡¡¡¡ I've an RT:82 no using, and i'm owner a gd77 ht with opengd77. Tnx¡¡¡
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Roger for all you have dun for us in the blind hams community. Will voice prompts work the same way for the MD-2017 as the other Open GD77 family of radios? Do you have any other radios on your hit list for adding the Open GD77 firmware on?
Yes. Voice prompts work like on the other OpenGD77 firmware. I do not have any other radios on my 'hit list'. There are very few other radios which use or used the same chipset as in all the supported radios. i.e The C6000 DMR + FM DSP chip. Newer radios use a combined CPU + DSP chip called a C7000 which is a Chinese product with no support for any developers outside China to use it. Even inside China only industrial companies can access the programming tools to use it. There are some older radios, like the Aluiance HD1 which I think may use the same C6000 chip, but its not a radio which sold well, and its no longer manufactured, and even getting hold of one would be difficult, so its unlikely I would have the time etc to port to that radio unless someone gave me several of them to take apart etc
What does open GD77? What are the pros to the standard Baofeng 1701 Firmware?
You'd need to read the OpenGD77 User Guide, because there isn't a features list. Definitely NOT supported by OpenGD77 is : No DMR SMS/Text messaging. No Dual Watch No DMR Encryption No DMR Dual Capacity Direct mode No DMR audio recording probably there are other things it can't do.
@@vk3kyy okay, I got it now. Simply, openGD77 does make your radio more worth than it was before :D Very nice firmware! You developed it? Nice job dude. But I can't use it. I need encryption. I don't live in the US and encryption is a basic right in my country. Like the second amendment in the US. Why is no encryption support? Do we get a OpenGD77 version for non-us citizens with encryption support in the future?
Great job, Roger 🎉
I don’t have any audio :(
There definitely is audio in this video
Weird silent on iPad. Will check pc tomorrow 😢. Seems to work on iPhone tho. found it, sound only on left channel. I use one earpiece on the left…
@@doccybug OK. Looks like you are correct, there only appears to be audio on the right channel. I think this must be something to do with the video post production program I use. (KdenLive) I don't know if TH-cam would allow me to upload the same video again with this problem fixed. I will need to check Edit. I just checked and once a video is uploaded its not possible to replace it. I could completely delete it and make a new video with the same name I suppose, its just the links etc will be lost and also people would get notified that there is a new video when in fact its the same one again, just with audio on both channels
Thanks for the video Roger.
Hey can i use regular baofeng programing cable ?
No such thing as 'regular baofeng programming cable' Baofeng use many different cables for their radios. The cable from some other Baofeng radios, e.g. Baofeng RD-5R can be used, but NOT UV-5R or many others Cable from TYT radios is NOT compatible, but if you have a TYT cable e.g. MD380 cable, it can be modified by swapping the 2 data wires (normally green and white in the cable)
@@vk3kyy thank you
