Great work! Love the content. You are so humble. The next Gene Berg! Keep after it!
Thank you so much! He was a big inspiration for a lot of what I do actually! Thanks for watching.
There was a guy called the professor... He run the lines in the frame before boxing it in.. The areas where he might need access to in the future, for example where brake lines join together he cut a hole and made an access panel with clear lexan plastic so he could see the connections.. He was building a 50 chevy pickup.. If you Google up the professor you might be able to find him and his video series on this build and he explains how he built it with pictures etc.. i believe there was about 5 videos on this build... I don't know what happened, but he just disappeared.. Btw, if you look up his video, look in part 1... Smith good luck with all your stuff.. Thx for sharing..
I just checked him out, and that is exactly what I had in mind! I’ll definitely have to watch the rest of his series now. I’m trying to make videos as I go along with what I’m doing to make people feel included in the process. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching!
Made it to the end 🙂
Sounds like you'll be hitting the high 12s with those new jets!! Can't wait to see it fly down the track next year! It was good hanging out with you and your dad that day!
I hope so, my goal is to get under 13 seconds and 100mph. It was really nice to see you out there as well! Hopefully I’ll see you around more next summer. Thanks for watching!
Hey Smith, what's up? I was wondering why you hadn't posted much.. I was hoping nothing serious had happened to you.. Always good to run into someone that can help you.. Carbs are so complex, I never was very good with them.. Smith I have to go run a few errands so you take care my friend and stay warm...
Hey Gary! Yeah my posting schedule has been all over the place. I’m actually in school right now for sheet metal and it’s been taking up a lot of my free time. I’ve been doing really good though, how have you been? I’m happy to hear my videos have been helpful, feel free to let me know if there’s anything else you want me to go over! You take care as well, and thank you for watching!
Nice job. Wish I had the courage to go to the track. Your off to a good start. The best thing about it is that you 've learned quite a few things that will help you the next time you go.
Thank you! Honestly I was absolutely sh*tting my pants going into it. That’s why I put it off till late summer. But now I wish I did it sooner! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
The uni strut spray booth is sweet. Really good idea vs uses studs.
Thanks man! I was trying to keep my cost down as much as I could because I knew it was gonna get expensive fast, and I have a cheap supplier for unistrut.
A pretty good time? That's an excellent time. Riding along or driving a bug that runs 14's vs a newer car that runs 14's is a world of difference. I have a bone stock shifted 2014 5.0 which will run high 13s all day long, but it isn't near as fun as a 14 second bug. Choice VW and great content by the way, I'm here because we're going to do a bug project, used to have one, it was slow AF but man did she ride low with that select a drop and looked good. Heater channels were shot of course and she wasn't much fun in the Denver winter time, but as a young man I didn't give a damn. Now that I'm older, the next one will have heat I can assure you.
Thanks man! I guess since there were faster bugs at the track with me it just didn’t feel as fast. Feel free to ask me any questions about anything and I can try my best to answer them. I can imagine a Denver winter being pretty damn cold, it’s cool to hear about where everyone’s from that watches my video. Thank you for watching!
Love those old Dodge pickups... An old school hemi would look nice in that Dodge.. Hope Oliver is doing well.. Smith, you take care my friend and God Bless....
Thanks Gary! And yeah I am leaning towards going with the old school hemi, it’s just quite the price tag that goes along with them. You take care as well!
Use an electric polisher with cutting paste. go slow, use water to lubricate the cutting paste. should take those marks out
yeah... I think I might go at it again this winter at some point, I was afraid of going through the clear coat by accident. Thank you though
You can fix the bounce problem welding 2 brackets and screwing them directly to the mid mount, instead of using de poliuretan
Remo williams’ loft space. Pretty cool
Coilovers?
Adjustable torsion bars! I did think about doing a coil over conversion though.
I have the same wheels from him
A man of good taste I see
I was wondering if you can share your alternator fix. I'm having the same issue and need to understand how you added and where you connected the light.
Hey! Sorry I couldn’t reply sooner, I was away on the weekend. I think I can reply to you with a short video to explain things better which I’ll do tomorrow. But in short, I never had to actually change much at all. I just cut the warning light cable that comes off the alternator, and routed it to a “incandescent” bulb, instead of the LED bulb that was in my Speedo. I’ll see if I can send you a short video so you can see my diagram. I know how irritating that problem can be. Thanks for watching though!
@@smithsgarage273 Thank you so much, I really appreciate you time.
Simplified Alternator Charging Fix
That tool is called a screw starter and it is used to install screws in difficult places like distributors and carbs and are available in most good auto parts stores.
That’s good to know, thank you. I’m just thankful my dad doesn’t mind me going through his tool box haha. Probably gonna get myself one soon.
Engine sounds good 🤙 Make sure you disconnect the linkage from the carbs when you make sync adjustments or your adjustments will be for nothing. Also the linkage needs to be adjusted so the carbs open at the same exact time and amount.
Thanks! I actually forgot to say that in the video since I didn’t have to sync them for my car again. I’ll have to try and edit that into the video… thank you though.
@@smithsgarage273 all good man, just something for people to read in the comments. Keep up the good work.
I once rebuilt a 650 Holley carb... The problem that I was having was reversed.. So my experience with carbs isn't great, so i leave this stuff to the pros... Thx for sharing your experiences.. Hope your bug is doing well... Love how you've built it...
Yeah I was so stressed out the first time I pulled these carbs apart. I just never found a video of someone who did everything in one video so I wanted to give it a shot. Thank you though, hope you’re doing well.
Yep all is well here in Tennessee.. Starting to cool off a little.. Fortunately we didn't get many days in the 90's... I imagine it's really cooling off up your way... Have you ever heard of the Dusty Lumber Co? He's up in Canada somewhere ... A master carpenter.. Well Smith you take care of yourself and I'll see you on your next video...
Do you have a video going over your tire sizes and rationale?
I do! The video is based off a different set of wheels that I use for daily driving. But the new street slicks are M&H 215/65 B16 drag radials. I’ll make a video soon talking more about them. Thanks for Watching! Edit: here’s the link to my Rim/Tire video th-cam.com/video/8UiZKZzcNH0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Srpg8e1s7rs4jbaX
We all learn different ways, the fact you got things sorted out is great. Good catch on that fire!! Glad you got the alternator charging. You’re not the only one who has put a led bulb in there and had an issue. Look forward to more content!
Thanks man! It’s nice to hear I’m not the only one who’s had that problem, it’s weird how all the speedos come with a led bulb if it doesn’t work.
@@smithsgarage273 it’s common for the new speedos to come with LEDs in them, that’s the current technology and most think it’s better to have vs an old incandescent style. Pro tip though, you’ll want to be able to see your alternator light from inside the cab. IF your alternator belt comes off, of course you’ll stop charging but you’ll also loose your fan for cooling. That can be a problem pretty quick when running down the highway.
@VWJawbreaker yeah that makes sense. And yeah I didn’t think about the belt itself coming off. I need to find a better spot for the light, It’s just hard to find a nice looking small incandescent style light in this modern world apparently. Thanks for the advice
Looking forward to some more videos.
Thanks man! I plan on getting better with this channel.
Glad to see you back and that you did not burn up that beautiful car.
Yeah I’m glad too! Thanks for following along with my channel!
The Kafer bar is the a as in apple just FYI, like how they build the lower Honda or Yamaha motorcycle with the small seat and custom turn signals and custom tanks and small fenders.
Yeah that makes sense, thanks. Never was the best with English even though it’s my first language haha.
Smith it's so good to see you again... I was wondering if there was a serious problem... if I had your email address I would have forwarded you an email... I haven't watched the video yet, I just wanted to let you know there's a few of us that were concerned about you guys... Well I'm going to watch the video.. Take care and God Bless...p.s. that spring on the wing nut was a good idea, I would probably have safety wired it but that requires putting new wire on every time.. I think the spring is a lot cleaner look... See you next video... Don't catch anything on fire...
Hi Gary! It’s great to hear from you again actually. I always enjoy posting because of your comments. I’m sorry for not posting at all this summer, I thought I’d have a lot more content, and motivation. But I ended up just having no time and I chose to just have fun instead of forcing myself to post more. Thanks a lot for watching my video, It’s mostly just an update on life up till now.
@@smithsgarage273 Fun is good, I'm glad you caught us up...Looking forward to hearing those quarter mi times...lol..
Thank you so much. I was having such a hard time finding “prefabbed” wide steelies for my bug. Did not feel comfortable banding them myself. I’ll be hitting up the add on the Samba.
Im really happy to hear my video helped you out! I was in a similar boat as you until I found his add miraculously. Thank you so much for watching!
Need help When I jack up my 67 VW after I let the jack down and remove my floor jack the car stays up in the air like a Baja And only drops back down low when I move it or take off to drive it Like it's all super stiff
Hello! Yeah, I found mine actually did that exact same thing. I know suspension does need movement to help it settle. But the independent rear end of a beetle in specific is really bad for staying way up in the air when you first drop it. In order to find the ride height of my car, I had to adjust it and then drive it around to see where it would actually settle.
Beautiful Bug. Did you put a wider fender in the back?
Thank you! No all my fenders are stock. Though I noticed one side is slightly wider which I think is just because it’s getting pulled a little differently once it’s bolted in.
I be interested to know what width your stock fenders measure ,iam looking to do this but according to the add these won't fit? Thanks for the content
@@shawn9878 I can totally measure them when I get home. But I do recall the add saying they won’t fit, and I took the chance, I found that it strongly depends on the tires you pick as well. What measurement do you want specifically? I can measure straight from the body to the inner fender.
@@smithsgarage273 yeah that's great I appreciate that, only reason I have concerns is I have after market fenders. Thanks again
Top mounting hole inner fender to , inside lip if that makes sense
sorry, im completley new to this channel, i just bought my own beetle, what egine is that it looks sick and what did you do, cant wait to follow you in this and you earned youself another sub
Nothing to be sorry about! I’m sorry I didn’t respond sooner i have been really busy. I’m planning on getting back into posting quite soon though. The engine is a 2276cc, I have another video on the engine specs alone. But thanks a lot for your sub!
How much does these rims cost
Sorry to get back to you so late, I haven’t been checking my comments. They range from $450-$500 USD per set of 2 rims. Depends on what size you like. Thanks for watching!
beautiful job! question: are those fenders stock or are they wider than stock?
Thank you! I’m really sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, I haven’t been checking my comments. They are stock fenders.
Nice car man. Put the new knob underneath a uv light until it dis colors to match the old ones.
They have sealed bearings you can replace the rear bearings with.
Sorry i haven’t checked my comments in a while. My problem ended up being with a plate that held the brake calliper, it was a part of the disk brake conversion. It was too thick so I thinned it by 1/16” and took out a paper gasket. Seems to have solved my problem. But thank you!
Tire size you running!? Thanks in advance
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner! I have a video talking about the tire sizes if you want to go check it out!
Awesome Video and 🔝Notch Beetle ,Thanks for Sharing👊🏽

I mostly do, and I try to. There’s just no easy track availability near me.
@@smithsgarage273 that's a nice set up you got with your ride👍🇩🇪
your steering wheel is installed upside down
Wow! Almost like my wheels are turned the way my steering wheel is.
Take the knob and drop it in some coffee. Watch it darken and wait until it matches up with your other knobs.
That’s actually a great idea, thanks
Great explanation! This will me helpful to many folks!
Thank you! I’m not the best at teaching stuff but I’m glad it’s helpful.
Oliver is quite a looker, my dude!
Thanks man!
The price of that shifter is ridiculous! but I see why you bought it - it def. fits the rest of the interior!
Haha yeah… it was definitely a hard pill to swallow. I actually wasn’t even going to get It, but I just kept thinking about it and it seemed to fit in so well.
I am doing this on my phone, so it is hard to type. One question I have been wanting to ask. Where did you get your heater channels? My channels came from. jbugs, they are also sold at CIP-1. The ridge where the top and bottom of the channel are joined sticks out pretty far in fact, so far, they have to be trimmed so they don't rub on the seat channels. If you used the same type of channels, how did your carpets go around that? Did you do anything special. I believe on newer bugs the wires may have went under that stick out.
I got some heavy duty channels from cip1, and I actually completely forgot to say this when I talked about them. But yeah, when I held them up to my floor pans to make sure they were right, the lip was way too big, so I ground them down all the way around and re welded them for strength because I got close to the spot welds. Having them like that for wires does make sense but I just had assumed it was bad build quality. Even after that, there is a bit of a void behind my carpet there between the floor pan and that lip from the channel. I hope that helps clear up what you’re asking. Edit: you actually reminded me about how painful that whole process was, I completely forgot. I went back and looked at some photos and the lip was wayyyy too big. I almost made the whole thing come apart by trimming it down.
@@smithsgarage273 I was thinking about removing the spot welds cutting them and re spot welding them. One is on the car so Like you I am cutting to the weld on that one and rewelding I am sure. I have the same heater channels by the way. If I were to do it again it would be channels from Classic Fab or Wolfsburg West. They also did not line up at the Napoleons Hat. I had to take the front cap off the heater channel and redrill the holes. Back to cutting the lip right off and rewelding unfortunately that coating is also between the two halfs and the plug weld will have to be cleaned or sand blasted. This problem is not the end of the world but those heater channels should come with a disclaimer that they need to be modified because they are made to fit many years of cars. Thanks for the reply.
Keep it up, brother. I love your channel. Definitely one of my new favorites. Looking forward to the next one 👏👏👏 PS,, your car is fire. That interior is off the charts...🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much!
Headliners are really hard ….. you did an awsome job
Thank you! I was stressing out so much trying to do it.
Mr. Smith you have such a beautiful bug, I would like to pattern one like yours one day.. The color choices are great..The tires and rims...I usually notice those little things but I overlooked the Keychain... I had a 72 Camaro R/S with the sport bumpers.. I had looked for one for 4 years before finally locating one in good condition.. How do you like the vintage speed shifter? I had a couple bugs with the SCAT drag 500 shifter.. it reminded me of the old Hurst shifters.. And I never had any problems with them.. Well nuff said about my stuff.. Thx for giving us a little more info on Oliver.. Well Smith, you take care until next video..
Thank you! The key chain is my favourite little memory, plus it’s cool looking. I had looked for an old Camaro for awhile as well before my beetle but I kinda fell in love with the beetles once I looked into them. It wasn’t exactly the short shifter that was the problem, since sand got inside my frame from the sand blasting, the bushing that the shift linkage ran through also got sand in it, that I couldn’t get out. My short shifter was cheaper, from a swap meet and it amplified the grindy feeling. The taller shifter is just a preference of mine really.
If the sand wears out your shifter bushings prematurely, go with the delrin bushings... They will probably last a lifetime .. I think they might something for the transaxle connection as well.. I saw a nice installation video on TH-cam about the delrin shifter bushings.. Well you take care my friend and have a blessed week...
Best to use a weld in mid mount. Not sure what you mean about tying the motor into the body. But a Kafer bar/truss bar will be your best bet in keeping things from twisting.
Thanks, I actually did just order a Kafer setup. There is a traction bar people keep recommending me that comes down from your bumper mounts and straddles the engine. But Im trying to avoid it.
Nice Job, greetings from México
why couldn' you live near and work on everyones bug or mine at least !! :]
Haha, I already have a handful with my own. But some beetle friends would be cool to have
I had to put a diode on my blinker wire to fix that same issue.
I actually just fixed it by switching to an old style incandescent light instead of an led one
